The LEGO MINDSTORMS toolkit can be used to help students learn basic programming and engineering concepts. The ROBOLAB software is widely used to program LEGO MINDSTORMS robotics in its icon-based programming environment. However, this software does not provide debug features for LEGO MINDSTORMS programs. Users cannot test the program before downloading it into LEGO robotics hardware. This book introduces a simulator to simulate the motions of LEGO robotics in a virtual 3D environment. The simulator uses ODE (Open Dynamic Engine) and OpenGL, combined with ROBOLAB. It can track and display program execution as the simulation runs. An introduction to the overall structure and architecture of the simulator is given and is followed by a detailed description of each component in the system. The discussions based on several test results are then given. This leads to the conclusion that the simulator is able to accurately represent the actions of robots under certain assumptions and conditions. This work should help users to understand basic robotic simulation concepts, especially for those users who are working with LEGO MINDSTORMS."

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 2.0, University of Salzburg (Department of Computer Sciences), course: Natural Computation, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents techniques to detect mental blocks in humans based on the physiological parameters skin potential and skin resistance. We examine physiological measures from the Musico Cause and Effect study of the Science Network for Man and Music at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts, Mozarteum Salzburg. The existing digital signal analysis tool AIDA used to process the physiological data has been replaced by the Dynalyzer developed by the author with considerable improvements in accuracy and performance. We present fundamentals of digital signal processing, outline the measurement of physiological data, and discuss characteristics of mental blocks. We suggest several criteria for the detection of mental blocks based on characteristic features of the physiological time series in the time and/or frequency domain. In first experiments the potential of these criteria is evaluated by applying them to actual physiological data of a test subject. As no ground truth on the occurrence of mental blocks is available, the experimental results can only be an indicator for the quality of the detection of mental blocks. Further experiments are conducted with data from the Vienna determination test assessing the reactive stress tolerance and attention deficits of human test subjects.
The theme of this book is an examination of security patterns for mobile agents systems and a unique weighting scheme for security patterns. It is motivated by the trend within software engineering, artificial intelligence to develop systems, which possess disconnects between security integration and system practicality. Security experts within software engineering are primarily concerned with the many facets of system security, while the mobile agent/distributed system developer is primarily concerned with building small commercial or academic prototypes systems that work for a particular research problem. This has led to the contemporary problem of ad-hoc mobile agent/distributed system development in disjointed pieces in which security is typically considered as an afterthought not as aforethought. Security patterns are a unique way to bridge the gap between practical secure systems, specialized prototype systems within the interdisciplinary fields of software engineering, and artificial intelligence. These security patterns allow the community to exploit the knowledge and experience of sophisticated members of their community as well as provide a framework for discussion.
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Computer Science - Software, University of Paderborn, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, comment: This work will give insight on the current developments in the field of server virtualization and the various techniques involved in it as well as a short historical overview about when the first types of virtualization were introduced. The findings will mostly be supported by examples of current virtual environments (especially the XEN project)., abstract: Server virtualization is currently a field of IT which is undergoing a rapid development. Introducing an even spread of performance on server farms which results in a good TCO (total cost of ownership), virtualization has already got the full attention from industry, resulting in massive participation and huge acquisitions. With server virtualization the size of server farms can be reduced dramatically, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership and (by using techniques like Linux-HA in virtual environments) increased availability. Even with an overhead of 10-20% on the layer of virtualization it is still very interesting since the load on a server farm can be spread evenly (which is not only a main target in server virtualization but also in distributed systems in general). This work will give an insight on the current developments in the field of server virtualization and the various techniques involved in it as well as a short historical overview about when the first types of virtualization were introduced (and why they failed, since according to A. Tanenbaum the current hardware is not made to be virtualized). The findings will mostly be supported by examples of current virtual environments (especially the XEN project). The paper will first introduce the different ways of virtualizing a system and in how far hardware can or can not support this. The second part will introduce the current software for virtualizing a server and giving user
Simplified Building Energy Modeling Tool for Architects is an energy software program designed to study the relative change of energy uses in different architectural design schemes. It can be used in the design process, construction, and daily operation of most buildings. This energy-based interfacing program is intended to help architects, engineers, educators, students, building designers, major consumers of architectural services, and other professionals, whose work interfaces with that of architects, to quickly visualize, and compare energy performance and savings of different design schemes. The techniques are sophisticated enough to inform design decisions, enable performance analysis and diagnostic studies. The book begins with the importance of and outlines its scope of work, problems, hepotheses, innovative approach, objectives, methodology and procedure, assumptions and limitations, research findings, and outcommes and results, takes the readers into a historical development and recent trends of building energy modeling, analysis, and design tools, then explains the major concepts of the software tool: module and its parameters, and many different functions that the tool can do.

Many years of research into using Electronic Voting Systems (EVS) within lectures has so far led to the conclusion that EVS is of beneficial value to student learning by involving students directly in conversation and deeper reflection. EVS researchers have proposed that using the voting data from EVS outside the lecture theatre may also benefit learning. They suggest that an Integrated Learning Environment (ILE) presenting this data would enable students to self-direct their learning and tutors to continue the dialogue from lectures. This book describes the implementation of such an ILE used within an introductory programming course at the University of Glasgow, in order to investigate these proposed benefits. This book also discusses what impact the instructional design of the course has on student learning and uses this discussion to illuminate the findings. This reasoning leads to suggested changes to the instructional design to provide better opportunity for deeper reflection amongst the students.

The International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress Organization (CIP4) provides a technical standard for reliable interoperability between different hardware and software vendors in the print media industry. The standard is based on the Job Definition Format (JDF), an XML-based job ticket, and the Job Messaging Format (JMF), a job messaging protocol. This book covers the design and implementation of pull workflows in a JDF environment, based on the JDF Specification v1.3. Usually, controllers submit jobs to workers. In order to keep track of the workers, information about their statuses and capabilities has to be updated continuously. This can get time and network consuming in larger implementations. Pull workflows can help to tackle these problems. As part of this book, Bambi has been developed. Bambi is a set of J2EE applications for simulating pull workflows. A library covering its core functionality is provided as well.

Globalization and increased competition require that software products are introduced to the market as early as possible. For the successful development of software products it is crucial to take the process view which distinguishes between three processes that consist of multiple steps: product management processes, project management processes and software methodologies. The software industry differentiates itself from the classical production industry by having a great variety of software methodologies available. Often project management processes are perceived isolated from the product development processes for software products. In order to guarantee a successful product development the phases and milestones between these three process types need to be aligned. This work shows the process alignment from the project management view. It identifies the relationships between project management, product management and software development methodologies. Further it provides systems dynamics models for software methodologies to show the effect of these software methodologies over time and to identify the parameters that can influence the progress of a project. |
