The Book of the Courtier, Baldassare Castiglione's classic account
of Renaissance court life, offers profound insight into the refined
behavior which defined the era's ruling class. The courtly customs
and manners of Italy to a great extent characterized the
Renaissance, which elevated art and expression to new heights.
Baldassare Castiglione published this book with the intention of
chronicling the manners, customs and traditions which underpinned
how courtiers, nobles, and their servants, behaved. Although
ostensibly a book of etiquette and good conduct, Castiglione's
treatise carries enormous historical value. He derived his
observations directly from the many gatherings and receptions
conducted by society's elite. Conversations with the officials,
diplomats and nobility of the era further enhanced the accuracy of
this book, imbuing it with an authenticity seldom seen elsewhere.
"Where IS Your Mother?" offers answers to the everyday questions
regarding basic etiquette and simple grace. Fun, easy, and
informative, this guide will open the doors to rediscovering the
importance and ease of basic etiquette and simple grace in today's
world. This is not "just another book on etiquette"-each chapter is
filled with sound information and great tips presented in a simple,
informative, and straightforward manner. The easy strategies for
more gracious living within are founded on classic
eighteenth-century guidelines, re-imagined for today's considerably
more complicated life, society, and lifestyles. Many basic (and
not-so-basic) etiquette questions are addressed, along with the
mystery of whether or not Grandma was really telling the truth
about the power of the magic words of etiquette: "please, thank
you, " and "excuse me. "The presentation of these guidelines has
been simplified, eliminating the intimidation of the subject
matter, but the basics are very much in line with the Old World
etiquette lessons-lessons that author Ava Carroll-Brown feels
should not only be taught and followed but practiced regularly.
"Where IS Your Mother?" is a wonderful addition to any reference
library and the perfect gift for anyone at any occasion.

In any society, a foreigner learning the language must also learn
what passes for good manners. The same is true for the historian
trying to understand the social rules of a period and why these
change. This book explores the nature and development of early
modern conceptions of good manners, and examines some of the
particular forms of everyday behaviour which these conceptions
implied. `Courtesy' and `Civility' were among the values central to
Tudor and Stuart assumptions and fears about the social and
political order.
How men and women interact, the respect young show old and old show young, and who doffs their hat to whom provides a telling window on American cultural history. Bowing To Necessities is the chronologically most wide-ranging study, covering the long period of 1620 to 1860, of its kind. Working through two centuries of conduct literature, Professor Hemphill provides a wonderful retelling of American history to the Civil War, illuminating crucial connections between evolving class, gender, and age relations along the way.
Powder Puff Principles is about remembering the grace and good
manners our mothers and grandmothers displayed in their dress,
behavior, and the image they projected, while preparing ourselves
to do the same for our children. Powder Puff Principles is about
being polished and prepared, and adhering to morals and integrity.
These principles allow us to embrace our own strengths and
femininity while empowering us to do anything we put our minds to.
There are lots of ways to start a story, but this one begins with a chicken.
When the world becomes overwhelming, Ella Risbridger focuses on the little things that bring her joy, like enjoying a glass of wine when cooking, FaceTiming with a friend whilst making bagels, and sharing recipes that are good for the soul. One night she found herself lying on her kitchen floor, wondering if she would ever get up - and it was the thought of a chicken, of roasting it, and of eating it, that got her to her feet and made her want to be alive.
Midnight Chicken is a cookbook. Or, at least, you'll flick through these pages and find recipes so inviting that you will head straight for the kitchen: roast garlic and tomato soup, uplifting chilli-lemon spaghetti, charred leek lasagne, squash skillet pie, spicy fish finger sandwiches and burnt-butter brownies. It's the kind of cooking you can do a little bit drunk, that is probably better if you've got a bottle of wine open and a hunk of bread to mop up the sauce. But if you settle down and read it with a cup of tea (or a glass of that wine), you'll also discover that it's an annotated list of things worth living for - a manifesto of moments worth living for. This is a cookbook to make you fall in love with the world again.

Copied out by hand as a young man aspiring to the status of
Gentleman, George Washington's 110 rules were based on a set of
rules composed by French Jesuits in 1595. The first English edition
of these rules was available in Francis Hawkins' Youths Behavior,
or Decency in Conversation Amongst Men, which appeared in 1640, and
it is from work that Washington seems to have copied. The rules as
Washington wrote them out are a simplified version of this text.
However much he may have simplified them, these precepts had a
strong influence on Washington, who aimed to always live by them.
The rules focus on self-respect and respect for others through
details of etiquette. The rules offer pointers on such issues as
how to dress, walk, eat in public, and address one's superiors.
