Rosemary Wakeman's original survey text comprehensively explores
modern European urban history from 1815 to the present day. It
provides a journey to cities and towns across the continent, in
search of the patterns of development that have shaped the urban
landscape as indelibly European. The focus is on the built
environment, the social and cultural transformations that mark the
patterns of continuity and change, and the transition to modern

Robert Knight's book examines how the 60,000 strong Slovene
community in the Austrian borderland province of Carinthia
continued to suffer in the wake of Nazism's fall. It explores how
and why Nazi values continued to be influential in a post-Nazi era
in postwar Central Europe and provides valuable insights into the
Cold War as a point of interaction of local, national and
international politics. Though Austria was re-established in 1945
as Hitler's 'first victim', many Austrians continued to share
principles which had underpinned the Third Reich. Long treated as
both inferior and threatening prior to the rise of Hitler and then
persecuted during his time in power, the Slovenes of Carinthia were
prevented from equality of schooling by local Nazis in the years
that followed World War Two, behavior that was tolerated in Vienna
and largely ignored by the rest of the world. Slavs in Post-Nazi
Austria uses this vital case study to discuss wider issues relating
to the stubborn legacy of Nazism in postwar Europe and to instill a
deeper understanding of the interplay between collective and
individual (liberal) rights in Central Europe. This is a
fascinating study for anyone interested in knowing more about the
disturbing imprint that Nazism left in some parts of Europe in the
postwar years.
This open access book uncovers one important, yet forgotten, form
of itinerant livelihoods, namely petty trade, more specifically how
it was practiced in Northern Europe during the period 1820-1960. It
investigates how traders and customers interacted in different
spaces and approaches ambulatory trade as an arena of encounters by
looking at everyday social practices. Petty traders often belonged
to subjugated social groups, like ethnic minorities and migrants,
whereas their customers belonged to the resident population. How
were these mobile traders perceived and described? What goods did
they peddle? How did these commodities enable and shape trading
encounters? What kind of narratives can be found, and whose? These
questions pertaining to daily practices on a grass-root level have
not been addressed in previous research. Encounters and Practices
embarks on hidden histories of survival, vulnerability, and
conflict, but also discloses reciprocal relations, even
friendships.
There is a vigorous debate on the exact beginnings of the Crusades,
as well as a growing conviction that some practices of crusading
may have been in existence, at least in part, long before they were
identified as such. The Prehistory of the Crusades explores how the
Crusades came to be seen as the use of aggressive warfare to
Christianise pagan lands and peoples. Reynolds focuses on the
Baltic, or Northern, Crusades, an aspect of the Crusades that has
been little documented, thus bringing a new perspective to their
historical and ideological origins. Baltic Crusades were
distinctive because they were not directed at the Holy Land, and
they were not against Muslim opponents, but rather against pagan
peoples. From the Emperor Charlemagne's wars against the Saxons in
the 8th and 9th centuries to the Baltic Crusades of the 12th
century, this book explores the sanctification of war in creating
the ideal of crusade. In so doing, it shows how crusading
ultimately developed in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Prehistory
of the Crusades provides a valuable insight into the topic for
students of medieval history and the Crusades.
International Organizations play a pivotal role on the modern
global stage and have done, this book argues, since the beginning
of the 20th century. This volume offers the first historical
exploration into the formative years of international public
administrations, covering the birth of the League of Nations and
the emergence of the second generation that still shape
international politics today such as the UN, NATO and OECD.

Germany to launch major military offensives at the beginning of the
First World War. The focus is on understanding why these two
countries adopted high-risk offensive strategies during an
international confrontation rather than a defensive military
stance. The decision to attack or defend did not occur in a
political vacuum. The leaders of Austria-Hungary and Germany
adopted offensive strategies as a way to achieve their political
ambitions. The offensives undertaken by Austria-Hungary and Germany
in 1914 thus reflected their political goals as well as the
strategic doctrines of war planners. The concluding chapter of this
study explores why deterrence failed in 1914.
