Socialist Women and the Great War: Protest, Revolution and
Commemoration, an open access book, is the first transnational
study of left-wing women and socialist revolution during the First
World War and its aftermath. Through a discussion of the key themes
related to women and revolution, such as anti-militarism and
violence, democracy and citizenship, and experience and
life-writing, this book sheds new and necessary light on the
everyday lives of socialist women in the early 20th century. The
participants of the 1918-1919 revolutions in Europe, and the
accompanying outbreaks of social unrest elsewhere in the world,
have typically been portrayed as war-weary soldiers and suited
committee delegates-in other words, as men. Exceptions like Rosa
Luxemburg exist, but ordinary women are often cast as passive
recipients of the vote. This is not true; rather, women were
pivotal actors in the making, imagining, and remembering of the
social and political upheavals of this time. From wartime strikes,
to revolutionary violence, to issues of suffrage, this book reveals
how women constructed their own revolutionary selves in order to
bring about lasting social change and provides a fresh comparative
approach to women's socialist activism. As such, this is a vitally
important resource for all postgraduates and advanced
undergraduates interested in gender studies, international

The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of
Italian literature, Joseph Luzzi straddles these two perspectives
in My Two Italies to link his family's dramatic story to Italy's
north-south divide, its quest for a unifying language, and its
passion for art, food, and family. From his Calabrian father's time
as a military internee in Nazi Germany - where he had a love affair
with a local Bavarian woman - to his adventures amid the
Renaissance splendour of Florence, Luzzi creates a deeply personal
portrait of Italy that leaps past facile cliches about Mafia
madness and Tuscan sun therapy. He delves instead into why Italian
Americans have such a complicated relationship with the "old
country," and how Italy produces some of the world's most
astonishing art while suffering from corruption, political
fragmentation, and an enfeebled civil society. With topics ranging
from the pervasive force of Dante's poetry to the meteoric rise of
Silvio Berlusconi, Luzzi presents the Italians in all their glory
and squalor, relating the problems that plague Italy today to the
country's ancient roots. He shares how his "two Italies" - the
earthy southern Italian world of his immigrant childhood and the
refined northern Italian realm of his professional life - join and
clash in unexpected ways that continue to enchant the many millions
who are either connected to Italy by ancestry or bound to it by
love.
This book argues that while the historiography of the development
of scientific ideas has for some time acknowledged the important
influences of socio-cultural and material contexts, the significant
impact of traumatic events, life threatening illnesses and other
psychotropic stimuli on the development of scientific thought may
not have been fully recognised. Howard Carlton examines the
available primary sources which provide insight into the lives of a
number of nineteenth-century astronomers, theologians and
physicists to study the complex interactions within their
'biocultural' brain-body systems which drove parallel changes of
perspective in theology, metaphysics, and cosmology. In doing so,
he also explores three topics of great scientific interest during
this period: the question of the possible existence of life on
other planets; the deployment of the nebular hypothesis as a theory
of cosmogony; and the religiously charged debates about the ages of
the earth and sun. From this body of evidence we gain a greater
understanding of the underlying phenomena which actuated
intellectual developments in the past and which are still relevant
to today's knowledge-making processes.
Napoleon arrived on St Helena in October 1815 aboard the British
74-gun warship HMS Northumberland. For the first six weeks he
stayed at the Briars, a property in the Upper Jamestown Valley
where he enjoyed the hospitality of the Balcombe family. By the end
of December, the re-building work on his destined home, Longwood,
was completed, and Napoleon accompanied by his entourage moved
there, much to Napoleon's annoyance. He found the site bleak,
inhospitable, and considered it conducive to rheumatism. The
British Government was paranoid about Napoleon being rescued and
maintained a large military presence on the island, and numerous
warships anchored offshore. This paranoia extended to the new
Governor, Sir Hudson Lowe. He ran a typrannical and petty campaign
against the residents at Longwood and had violent arguments with
Napoleon, who refused to cooperate with him. This book is one of
the best accounts of Napoleon's five-and-a-half years'
imprisonment, which ended with his death from a stomach ulcer. It
details all of the personalities, Napoleon's household, the
domestic arrangements, the island residents, the military residents
and the long-standing feud between Plantation House and Longwood.
It also covers Betsy Balcombe, the Deadwood Races, Napoleon's
habits and his garden and much, much more. The book has eighty
colour and black & white illustrations.

Eastern Europe and the republics of the former USSR at the time of
the transition to a market economy was arguably the major peacetime
health crisis of recent decades. Chernobyl and the Mortality Crisis

your murdered neighbor? How does one get used to friends,
colleagues, and neighbors no longer being part of everyday life?
How is moral, social, and legal order reinstated after one part of
the community participated in the ethnic cleansing of another? How
is order restored psychologically in the wake of neighbors watching
others being slaughtered by external enemies? This book sheds light
on how destroyed European communities, once multi-ethnic and
multi-religious, experienced postwar reconstruction, attempted to
come to terms with what had happened, and negotiated remembrance.
