What inspired this campaign?

I recently sat in Parliament at the National Youth Summit and heard children as young as 10 years old ask the ministers for equal education opportunities – and that is the moment I realized we actually have a huge educational gap in South Africa and “Learn to Read, Learn to Lead” is an attempt to bridge that gap for all South Africans.

When did this initiative officially start?

Officially launched in July (2018) at the Nasdak venue, with the help from Rachel Jafta - Professor in Economics at the University of Stellenbosch.
 
Tell us about the book design and mascot – why did you go with that particular storyline and characters?

• ‘local is lekker’ so when creating the storyline and characters I tried my best to embrace the beauty of South Africa.
• I wanted everyone to be able to relate to the story and characters. The story is set in a South African location.
• a lot of colours were used throughout the book to represent our Rainbow Nation and also as to make it more fun for the children. Each book has a theme in the beginning that continues throughout the book.
• educational section within the book that actually teaches the children how to read and write – in this section repetition was used to make it easier for the children. Very simple and basic English sentences
• The mascot and main character’s name is Tata, named after the late Nelson Mandela’s nickname.
Nelson Mandela’s quote; “Education is the most powerful tool one can use to change the world” is what inspired this campaign and is why I decided to name the main character after him.

I wanted to create a character that each individual in South Africa can relate to and not be aimed at a specific race or culture this is why Tata is a little rainbow creature (again, representing all of the Rainbow Nation, I made him a little alien that came from space because children are very interested in outer space nowadays).”

50% of the net profit from the book is split equally to go towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Tshwane Child Welfare Fund unrecognised. The remainder of the profits from the books will go towards converting and setting up shipping containers into classrooms and libraries to put in areas that lack educational facilities.

The intrigue continues...

The usually upbeat Karabo is miserable, she has a broken arm and heart. Luckily the ancestors have chosen her to interpret another mystery. This time it will lead her to her William's mother - Jessabelle. Who in turn will lead Karabo on a trail to Madagascar. But things aren't that simple or straightforward.

Her Story is the first in a planned children’s book series for 7- to 12-year-old girls that features 30 South African women whose lives inspire.

The first title in this series, Daughters of Modjadji, features women in the book from diverse settings, sectors and spheres of life. Their stories reflect not only the multiple roles that women play in society, but also the obstacles they face as a result of race, class and most importantly; their gender.

The book is centred on themes of affirmation, identity and gender. The stories are accompanied by vivid illustrations and interactive comic strips. The empowerment of girls is a fundamental building block of the publication, as seen by most of the writers and illustrators in the book being female.

What on Earth is That? is a story in rhyming text about a pangolin – the world’s least-known yet most-trafficked mammal. The author’s son Luke invites young readers or listeners on a journey asking various animals what they think the odd-looking creature is that he and a friend have found. In the process, it’s revealed just what extraordinary and endearing animals pangolins are and how deserving they are of our protection as an endangered species. A section at the end of the book provides some interesting facts on pangolins and shows the work being done by the Tikki Heywood Trust to fight for their survival.

The story is about a girl named Thuli who becomes a legend in her community. She lives with her brothers and one day they encourage her to steal. When she refuses, she is forced to walk home through the dark forest alone.

She finds a magical tree, the Tree of Truth, from which she takes a seed. The seed helps light her way out of the forest and Thuli is forced to confront her brothers and tell the truth.

The “Danny” series aims to take some every-day situations which may be frightening or anxiety-provoking for children and, in delightful rhyming stories, explain them in an accurate and re-assuring way.

In Danny Chomps on Too Many Chocolates, Danny starts sneaking into the pantry on a regular basis, eating too many sweets and biscuits, but soon discovers that this makes him feel slumpy, tired and unhealthy. When his mum discovers that her treat box is emptying out rapidly, she teaches Dan about the food groups, healthy fuels and moderation!

This book is invaluable in teaching children about the value of healthy eating, the various food groups, nutritional requirement and the benefits of balance. It is a most useful educational resource for schools too.
