When We Dead Awaken: Australia, New Zealand, and the Armenian Genocide (Hardcover): James Robins When We Dead Awaken: Australia, New Zealand, and the Armenian Genocide (Hardcover)
James Robins
R2,863 Discovery Miles 28 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

On April 25th 1915, during the First World War, the famous Anzacs landed ashore at Gallipoli. At the exact same moment, leading figures of Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire were being arrested in vast numbers. That dark day marks the simultaneous birth of a national story - and the beginning of a genocide. When We Dead Awaken - the first narrative history of the Armenian Genocide in decades - draws these two landmark historical events together. James Robins explores the accounts of Anzac Prisoners of War who witnessed the genocide, the experiences of soldiers who risked their lives to defend refugees, and Australia and New Zealand's participation in the enormous post-war Armenian relief movement. By exploring the vital political implications of this unexplored history, When We Dead Awaken questions the national folklore of Australia, New Zealand, and Turkey - and the mythology of Anzac Day itself.

R1,268 Discovery Miles 12 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The EU today is at a crossroads: either it becomes a great supranational union or it goes back to being an array of separate independent states. Alberto Martinelli and Alessandro Cavalli draw a grand fresco of the society in which the European Union is taking shape. Long-term social and cultural trends and main current developments in economics and politics are synthetically outlined. Key questions of identity and nationalism, immigration and inequality, welfare and economic governance, are thoroughly analysed. Main cleavages, conflicts of interest and different visions of member states, as well as institutional reforms and crisis management strategies are critically discussed. A detailed proposal for advancing the process of political integration concludes the volume.

Nuremberg and Vietnam (Hardcover, Lawbook Exchange ed.): Telford Taylor Nuremberg and Vietnam (Hardcover, Lawbook Exchange ed.)
Telford Taylor; Introduction by Ben Ferencz; Contributions by Joseph Perkovich
R1,080 Discovery Miles 10 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

With a New Introduction by Benjamin Ferencz, Chief Prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial Originally published three years before the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 1973, this important book was not a polemic, but a sober account of the Vietnam conflict from the perspective of international law. Framed in reference to the Nuremberg Trials that followed the Second World War, it described problems the United States may have to face due to its involvement in the Vietnam conflict. After presenting a general history of war crimes and an account of the Nuremberg Trials, Taylor turns his attention to Vietnam. Among other points, he examined parallels between actions committed by American troops during the then-recent My Lai Massacre of 1968 and Hitler's SS in Nazi-occupied Europe. Commissioned for this edition, Ferencz's introduction evaluates Taylor's study and its lessons for the present and future. When this book was published in 1970, Telford Taylor had concluded that U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam was an American tragedy: "Somehow we failed ourselves to learn the lessons we undertook to teach at Nuremberg." What were those lessons? How acceptable were they? Which laws of war could realistically be enforced on a raging battlefield against an implacable foe? Forty years later, it is worth re-examining how it came about that this powerful and humanitarian country could have come to be seen by many as a giant "prone to shatter what we try to save. -From the Introduction by Benjamin B. FerenczTelford Taylor 1908-1998] was chief counsel for the prosecution at the Nuremberg Trials. Later Professor of Law at Columbia University, he was a vigorous opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy and an outspoken critic of U.S. actions during the Vietnam War. His books include Sword and Swastika: Generals and Nazis in the Third Reich (1952), Grand Inquest: The Story of Congressional Investigations (1955) and The Anatomy of the Nuremberg Trials: A Personal Memoir (1992). Benjamin Ferencz, a member of Taylor's legal staff, was the Chief Prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial. He is the author of Defining International Aggression-The Search for World Peace (1975), Adjunct Professor of International Law, Pace University and founder of the Pace Peace Center.

Famine Politics in Maoist China and the Soviet Union (Hardcover): Felix Wemheuer Famine Politics in Maoist China and the Soviet Union (Hardcover)
Felix Wemheuer
R1,938 Discovery Miles 19 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An authoritative study of food politics in the socialist regimes of China and the Soviet Union During the twentieth century, 80 percent of all famine victims worldwide died in China and the Soviet Union. In this rigorous and thoughtful study, Felix Wemheuer analyzes the historical and political roots of these socialist-era famines, in which overambitious industrial programs endorsed by Stalin and Mao Zedong created greater disasters than those suffered under prerevolutionary regimes. Focusing on famine as a political tool, Wemheuer systematically exposes how conflicts about food among peasants, urban populations, and the socialist state resulted in the starvation death of millions. A major contribution to Chinese and Soviet history, this provocative analysis examines the long-term effects of the great famines on the relationship between the state and its citizens and argues that the lessons governments learned from the catastrophes enabled them to overcome famine in their later decades of rule.

Networks of Refugees from Nazi Germany - Continuities, Reorientations, and Collaborations in Exile (Hardcover): Helga... Networks of Refugees from Nazi Germany - Continuities, Reorientations, and Collaborations in Exile (Hardcover)
Helga Schreckenberger
R4,202 Discovery Miles 42 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume focuses on coalitions and collaborations formed by refugees from Nazi Germany in their host countries. Exile from Nazi Germany was a global phenomenon involving the expulsion and displacement of entire families, organizations, and communities. While forced emigration inevitable meant loss of familiar structures and surroundings, successful integration into often very foreign cultures was possible due to the exiles' ability to access and/or establish networks. By focusing on such networks rather than on individual experiences, the contributions in this volume provide a complex and nuanced analysis of the multifaceted, interacting factors of the exile experience. This approach connects the NS-exile to other forms of displacement and persecution and locates it within the ruptures of civilization dominating the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Contributors are: Dieter Adolph, Jacob Boas, Margit Franz, Katherine Holland, Birgit Maier-Katkin Leonie Marx, Wolfgang Mieder, Thomas Schneider, Helga Schreckenberger, Swen Steinberg, Karina von Tippelskirch, Joerg Thunecke, Jacqueline Vansant, and Veronika Zwerger

R3,667 Discovery Miles 36 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2016 Focussing on German responses to the Holocaust since 1945, Postwar Germany and the Holocaust traces the process of Vergangenheitsbewaltigung ('overcoming the past'), the persistence of silences, evasions and popular mythologies with regards to the Nazi era, and cultural representations of the Holocaust up to the present day. It explores the complexities of German memory cultures, the construction of war and Holocaust memorials and the various political debates and scandals surrounding the darkest chapter in German history. The book comparatively maps out the legacy of the Holocaust in both East and West Germany, as well as the unified Germany that followed, to engender a consideration of the effects of division, Cold War politics and reunification on German understanding of the Holocaust. Synthesizing key historiographical debates and drawing upon a variety of primary source material, this volume is an important exploration of Germany's postwar relationship with the Holocaust. Complete with chapters on education, war crime trials, memorialization and Germany and the Holocaust today, as well as a number of illustrations, maps and a detailed bibliography, Postwar Germany and the Holocaust is a pivotal text for anyone interested in understanding the full impact of the Holocaust in Germany.

Pollution and Atmosphere in Post-Soviet Russia - The Arctic and the Environment (Hardcover): Lars Rowe Pollution and Atmosphere in Post-Soviet Russia - The Arctic and the Environment (Hardcover)
Lars Rowe
R3,338 Discovery Miles 33 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study addresses the many initiatives to decrease industrial pollution emitting from the Pechenganikel plant in the northwestern corner of Russia during the final years of the Soviet Union, and examines the wider implications for the state of pollution control in the Arctic today. By examining the efforts of Soviet industry and government agencies, Finnish and Swedish officials, and Norwegian environmental authorities to curb industrial pollution in the region, this book offers an environmental history of the Arctic as well as a transnational, geopolitical history.

A German view of war at sea
It is inevitable that most books in English on any conflict in which British Forces were engaged tend to view the subject from a British perspective. The number of accounts or histories from the other side of the battle smoke translated and published in English are Hard to find and in the minority, they are therefore essential for any student who seeks a well-rounded view of a historical event. The great actions at sea during the First World War were few in number so it is fortunate that we have been left with this account by von Hase, who was both a German and a sailor in the service of his country. The book is part history and part a report from an eyewitness and it examines in depth the momentous Battles of Kiel and Jutland fought in the Skagerrak. An invaluable source work on the Imperial German Navy at War.

Pie in the Sky - How Joe Hill's Lawyers Lost His Case, Got Him Shot, and Were Disbarred (Hardcover): Kenneth Lougee Pie in the Sky - How Joe Hill's Lawyers Lost His Case, Got Him Shot, and Were Disbarred (Hardcover)
Kenneth Lougee
R504 Discovery Miles 5 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It could be said that the Joe Hill murder trial rates as one of the most important trials in Utah's history. Hill, a prolific Labor Union songwriter, was accused of murdering a Salt Lake City shopkeeper and his son during a robbery in 1914. In Pie in the Sky, author and trial lawyer Kenneth Lougee analyzes this case and explains the errors that were committed during the trial, which resulted in Hill's guilty verdict and subsequent execution. Interested in more than Hill's guilt or innocence, Lougee provides a thorough discussion of the case-including Hill's background with the Industrial Workers of the World, the political and religious climate in Utah at the time, the particulars of the trial, and the failings of the legal process. In this analysis, Lougee focuses on those involved in the trial, most especially the lawyers, which he describes in the text as the worst pieces of lawyering of all time. Pie in the Sky presents a breakdown of this case from a lawyer's perspective and shows why this trial is still a matter of interest in the twenty-first century.

John Buchan
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A unique Leonaur edition-never before available in this form
John Buchan was a popular author of historical and adventure fiction whose works remain in print to the present day. He also wrote important works of non-fiction that are less well remembered. Among these was a commissioned, multi-volume history of the First World War that was so well regarded that it became a source-work for other historians. This Leonaur Original, drawn from Buchan's history, and including many maps, battle plans, photographs and illustrations, has been published to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War on the Western Front as overwhelming German forces swept through Belgium and France. This was a mobile war-much like the wars fought in Europe for hundreds of years-of marching infantry and cavalry armed with lances and swords. The battle at Mons, the dogged retreat of the 'Contemptible Little Army' of the B. E. F., the incredible resistance of the out-dated Belgian Forces, the battles of the Marne and Aisne as the tide turned, and the carnage of the First Battle of Ypres as the war became a stalemate of wire, mud and trenches at the close of the year, are all covered in Buchan's brilliant take on just six months of war in 1914.

R5,823 Discovery Miles 58 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This study of a series of artistic representations of the Asia Pacific War experience in a variety of Japanese media is premised on Walter Davis' assertion that traumatic events and experiences must be 'constituted' before they can be assimilated, integrated and understood. Arguing that the contribution of the arts to the constitution, integration and comprehension of traumatic historical events has yet to be sufficiently acknowledged or articulated, the contributors to this volume examine how various Japanese authors and other artists have drawn upon their imaginative powers to create affect-charged forms and images of the extreme violence, psychological damage and ideological contradiction surrounding the War. In so doing, they seek to further the process whereby reading and viewing audiences are encouraged to virtually engage, internalize, 'know' and respond to trauma in concrete, ethical terms.
