Narrative, Perception, Language, and Faith (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005): E. Wright Narrative, Perception, Language, and Faith (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005)
E. Wright
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There have been many voices in disciplines as various as philosophy, history, psychology, hermeneutics, literary theory, and theology that have claimed that narrative is fundamental to all that is human. Here is a book that, in an engaging and amusing way, presents a coherent thesis to that effect, connecting the Joke and the Story (with all that comedy and tragedy imply) not only with our sensing and perceiving of the world, but with our faith in each other, and what the character of that faith should be.

Divine Play, Sacred Laughter, and Spiritual Understanding (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005): P. Laude Divine Play, Sacred Laughter, and Spiritual Understanding (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005)
P. Laude
R1,391 Discovery Miles 13 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This study in the relationship between religion and the comic focuses on the ways in which the latter fulfils a central function in the sacred understanding of reality of pre-modern cultures and the spiritual life of religious traditions. The central thesis is that figures such as tricksters, sacred clowns, and holy fools play an essential role in bridging the gap between the divine and the human by integrating the element of disequilibrium that results from the contact between incommensurable realities. This interdisciplinary and cross-cultural series of essays is devoted to spiritual, anthropological, and literary characters and phenomena that point to a deeper understanding of the various mythological, ceremonial, and mystical ways in which the fundamental ambiguity of existence is symbolized and acted out. Given its interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective, this volume will appeal to scholars from a variety of fields.

Innocence and Rapture - The Erotic Child in Pater, Wilde, James, and Nabokov (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005): K. Ohi Innocence and Rapture - The Erotic Child in Pater, Wilde, James, and Nabokov (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005)
K. Ohi
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Taking as its focus the erotic child in decadent aesthetics, this book explores the sexual and political stakes of an aestheticistexperience of rapture. Ohi examines the power of the work of art to transport, to disorient, to move, to extort the equivocal pleasuresof self-loss. He also explores how the beautiful child offers partisans of 'art for art's sake' an emblem for the ecstatic and erotic, even the queer possibilities of art. Aestheticism's erotic child is thus in stark contrast to the innocent child of today's ideology, who secures the claims of identity against the very disorientations celebrated by aestheticism. Articulating aesthetic transport through the desiring and desired child, aestheticism interrogates the ideology underpinning sexual oppression.

Sticking to the Union - An Oral History of the Life and Times of Julia Ruuttila (Paperback, 2003 ed.): S Polishuk Sticking to the Union - An Oral History of the Life and Times of Julia Ruuttila (Paperback, 2003 ed.)

R840 Discovery Miles 8 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

NEW SERIES ANNOUNCEMENT
Palgrave is pleased to announce a new series, Palgrave Studies in Oral History, edited by Linda Shopes of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and Bruce M. Stave, Board of Trustees Professor Emeritus and Director of the Center for Oral History at of the University of Connecticut. The series will feature the best current work in the field of oral history placed into a broad historical context, engaging issues of historical memory, and narrative construction. The books in the series will explore a wide variety of topics and themes in all areas of history. The series will include works using global, compartive, and local frameworks. Contributions to the series will highlight the unique capacity of oral history to humanize broader social and political trends, demonstrating their impact on the individual level.

Sticking to the Union relates the vibrant life of Julia Ruuttila (1907-1991), a political radical and labor journalist in the Pacific Northwest. Ruuttila's life of activism provides a much-needed woman's voice in the history of labor and social activism in the twentieth century. Ruuttila worked for civil liberties, civil rights, and peace organizations throughout her life, supporting striking workers, taking part in lunch-counter protests against businesses that discriminated against African Americans, and demonstrating against the Vietnam War. Polishuk provides insightful historical context for Ruuttila's own lively words. A unique and important perspective on American struggles of the twentieth century emerges in this engaging story of an irrepressible, hard-nosed woman.

Romanticism, Economics and the Question of 'Culture' (Paperback, New ed): Philip Connell Romanticism, Economics and the Question of 'Culture' (Paperback, New ed)
Philip Connell
R1,936 Discovery Miles 19 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Romantic age in Britain formed one of the most celebrated--and heterogeneous--moments in literary history, but it also witnessed the rise of "political economy" as the pre-eminent nineteenth-century science of society. Romanticism, Economics and the Question of 'Culture' investigates this historical conjunction, and reassesses the idea that the Romantic defense of spiritual and humanistic "culture" developed as a reaction to the individualistic, philistine values of the "dismal science."
Drawing on a wide range of source material, the book combines the methods of literary scholarship and intellectual history. It addresses the changing political identifications of familiar literary figures such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, but also illuminates the wider political and intellectual life of this period.
Romanticism, Economics and the Question of 'Culture' situates canonical Romantic writers within a nuanced, and highly detailed ideological context, while challenging our inherited understanding of the Romantic tradition itself as the social conscience of nineteenth-century capitalism.

Humanities Computing (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005): W. Mccarty Humanities Computing (Paperback, 1st ed. 2005)
W. Mccarty
R1,401 Discovery Miles 14 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Humanities Computing provides a rationale for a computing practice that is of and for as well as in the humanities and the interpretative social sciences. It engages philosophical, historical, ethnographic and critical perspectives to show how computing helps us fulfil the basic mandate of the humane sciences to ask ever better questions of the most challenging kind. It strengthens current practice by stimulating debate on the role of the computer in our intellectual life, and outlines an agenda for the field to which individual scholars across the humanities can contribute.

A History of Hope - When Americans Have Dared to Dream of a Better Future (Paperback): Nana A History of Hope - When Americans Have Dared to Dream of a Better Future (Paperback)
Nana
R1,201 Discovery Miles 12 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book chronicles American history through the stories of the individuals and movements that dreamed of a better future and then took action to make that dream a reality, arguing that the much heralded American spirit was not born as a gift of our founding, but was forged through our adversity and triumphs. From colonial revolutionaries to abolitionists, labor organizers to suffragists, progressives to civil rights activists, it was individuals and movements who dared to go against the American majority that both guarded and created our best national self.

Turn the Pulpit Loose - Two Centuries of American Women Evangelists (Paperback, 1st ed. 2090): P. Pope-Levison Turn the Pulpit Loose - Two Centuries of American Women Evangelists (Paperback, 1st ed. 2090)
P. Pope-Levison
R2,644 Discovery Miles 26 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Turn the Pulpit Loose features the lives and words of eighteen women evangelists including Sojourner Truth and Evangeline Booth, and lesser-known figures such as Jarena Lee (an African Methodist from the early 1800s) and Uldine Utley (a child evangelist in the early 1900s) who helped to shape American religious life from the nation's infancy to the present. Highlighting substantial primary sources - sermons, articles, diaries, letters, speeches, and autobiographies - Priscilla Pope-Levison weaves together fascinating narratives of each woman's life: her conversion and calling to preach, her primary evangelistic method, and her reflections about women in general. This anthology, complete with photographs of each evangelist, is an indispensable resource for a wide range of academic fields, including religion, history, women's studies, and literature.

Minority Languages in Europe - Frameworks, Status, Prospects (Paperback): G Hogan-Brun, S. Wolff Minority Languages in Europe - Frameworks, Status, Prospects (Paperback)
G Hogan-Brun, S. Wolff
R1,394 Discovery Miles 13 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Minority languages are part of Europe's shared cultural heritage and there is a broad consensus that it is important to protect and encourage linguistic and cultural diversity during the process of continuing European integration. But what legislative and policy instruments can be effective? Are there conflicts between language rights and the social policy demands of nation building? How are general European concerns reflected or challenged within individual countries? This volume illustrates the intellectually productive debate among sociolinguists, linguistic anthropologists, political scientists, lawyers, language activists and policy makers. The contributions focus on the current status of minority languages within a 'Europe of the regions', the future prospects for minority languages in the continuing process of European integration, and the effectiveness or otherwise of current national and European frameworks in ensuring future linguistic and cultural diversity.

Joan of Arc and Spirituality (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003): Bonnie Wheeler, A. Astell Joan of Arc and Spirituality (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003)
Bonnie Wheeler, A. Astell
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Joan of Arc is an unusual saint. Canonized in 1920 as a virgin, she died in 1431 as a condemned heretic. Uneducated, militant, and youthful, she obeyed 'Voices' that counselled her to pursue an unprecedented vocation. The various trial records provide a wealth of evidence about how Joan and others understood her spiritual life. This collection explores multiple facets of Joan's prayerful life. Two-thirds of the essays focus on Joan in her own time; the later chapters study Joan's formative influence upon modern women. Taken together, these essays offer new perspectives on the heroism of Joan's original way of sanctity.

Investigating Dickens' Style - A Collocational Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2004): M. Hori Investigating Dickens' Style - A Collocational Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2004)
M. Hori
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This new, corpus-driven approach to the study of language and style of literary texts makes use of the Dickens' 4.6 million-word corpus for a detailed examination of patterns of lexical collocations. It offers new insights into Dickens' linguistic innovation, together with a nuanced understanding of his use of language to achieve stylistic ends. At the centre of the study is a close analysis of the two narratives in Bleak House , read as a focal point for consideration of Dickens' stylistic development through his whole writing life.

Language, Logic and Epistemology - A Modal-Realist Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004): C.... Language, Logic and Epistemology - A Modal-Realist Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004)
C. Norris
R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Norris presents a series of closely linked chapters on recent developments in epistemology, philosophy of language, cognitive science, literary theory, musicology and other related fields. While to this extent adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Norris also very forcefully challenges the view that the academic 'disciplines' as we know them are so many artificial constructs of recent date and with no further role than to prop up existing divisions of intellectual labour. He makes his case through some exceptionally acute revisionist readings of diverse thinkers such as Derrida, Paul de Man, Wittgenstein, Chomsky, Michael Dummett and John McDowell. In each instance Norris stresses the value of bringing various trans-disciplinary perspectives to bear while none-the-less maintaining adequate standards of area-specific relevance and method. Most importantly he asserts the central role of recent developments in cognitive science as pointing a way beyond certain otherwise intractable problems in philosophy of mind and language.

Hayek's Journey - The Mind of Friedrich Hayek (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003): A. Ebenstein Hayek's Journey - The Mind of Friedrich Hayek (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003)
A. Ebenstein
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While Alan Ebenstein's biography of Friedrich Hayek was the first biography of this major twentieth century thinker, the book itself was not - per se - an intellectual biography. Hayek's Journey will be the follow-up volume that will give readers an in-depth look at the evolution of his thought, the influence of the Austrian School of Economics, the roles of Wittgenstein, Freud and Kant in his thinking; his relationship with Karl Popper, etc. This will become a classic of Hayek scholarship by the author credited with writing the first biography of a man who is now widely-regarded as a seer in relationship to the course of the twentieth century.

Queer Lyrics - Difficulty and Closure in American Poetry (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002): J. Vincent Queer Lyrics - Difficulty and Closure in American Poetry (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002)
J. Vincent
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Queer Lyrics fills a gap in queer studies: the lyric, as poetic genre, has never been directly addressed by queer theory. Vincent uses formal concerns, difficulty and closure, to discuss innovations specific to queer American poets. He traces a genealogy based on these queer techniques from Whitman, through Crane and Moore, to Ashbery and Spicer. Queer Lyrics considers the place of form in queer theory, while opening new vistas on the poetry of these seminal figures.

Female Playwrights and Eighteenth-Century Comedy - Negotiating Marriage on the London Stage (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Female Playwrights and Eighteenth-Century Comedy - Negotiating Marriage on the London Stage (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
M. Anderson
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Aphra Behn, Susannah Centlivre, Hannah Cowley, and Elizabeth Inchbald were the only four female playwrights in England with multiple comic successes from 1670-1800. Behn's interest in the body, Centlivre's fascination with written contracts, Cowley's nationalism, and Inchbald's discussion of divorce emerge in the comic events that are animated by the psychological mechanisms of humor. Attending to the dialogue between these comic events and the plays' more predictable comic endings illuminates the philosophical, political, and legal arguments about women and marriage that fascinated both female playwrights and the theatergoing public.

Spirit in the Dark - A Religious History of Racial Aesthetic (Paperback): Joesf Sorett Spirit in the Dark - A Religious History of Racial Aesthetic (Paperback)
Joesf Sorett
R726 Discovery Miles 7 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most of the major black literary and cultural movements of the twentieth century have been understood and interpreted as secular, secularizing and, at times, profane. In this book, Josef Sorett demonstrates that religion was actually a formidable force within these movements, animating and organizing African American literary visions throughout the years between the New Negro Renaissance of the 1920s and the Black Arts movement of the 1960s. Sorett unveils the contours of a literary history that remained preoccupied with religion even as it was typically understood by authors, readers, and critics alike to be modern and, therefore, secular. Spirit in the Dark offers an account of the ways in which religion, especially Afro-Protestantism, remained pivotal to the ideas and aspirations of African American literature across much of the twentieth century. From the dawn of the New Negro Renaissance until the ascendance of the Black Arts movement, black writers developed a spiritual grammar for discussing race and art by drawing on terms such as "church" and "spirit" that were part of the landscape and lexicon of American religious history. Sorett demonstrates that religion and spirituality have been key categories for identifying and interpreting what was (or was not) perceived to constitute or contribute to black literature and culture. By examining figures and movements that have typically been cast as "secular," he offers theoretical insights that trouble the boundaries of what counts as "sacred" in scholarship on African American religion and culture. Ultimately, Spirit in the Dark reveals religion to be an essential ingredient, albeit one that was always questioned and contested, in the forging of an African American literary tradition.

Narratives of British Socialism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002): Single Narratives of British Socialism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2002)
Single
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What can the study of narratives bring to our understanding of political ideas that other forms of analysis cannot? In Narratives of British Socialism , Stephen Ingle shows how imaginative literature can be used to give definition to political thought. The origins, development and eventual decline of British socialism are analyzed in the writings of Morris, Shaw, Wells, Huxley, Koestler, Orwell and others. Ingle concludes that narratives can give us an experiential understanding of political ideas.

Alessandra Levorato
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Much research has been done on the social messages conveyed to children reading or listening to fairy tales. In this highly original study, the emphasis shifts from content to linguistic expression. The language and linguistic organization of a dozen versions, old and new, of the Little Red Riding Hood story are analyzed using a variety of theoretical approaches, including Critical Discourse Analysis, Conversational Analysis, Functional Grammar and Critical Stylistics, to uncover the contribution of fairy tales to the discourse of gender relations over time.

The Writing of Rural England, 1500-1800 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003): S. Bending, A. McRae The Writing of Rural England, 1500-1800 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003)
S. Bending, A. McRae
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Writing of Rural England 1500-1800 documents and contextualizes the conflicting representations of rural life during a crucial period of social, economic and cultural change. It highlights the dialogues and tensions between agriculture and aesthetics, economics and morality, men and women, leisure and labour. By drawing on both canonical and marginal texts, it argues that early-modern writing not only reflected but played a part in constructing the cultural meanings of the English countryside with which we continue to live.

Women's Autobiography - War and Trauma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003): V. Stewart Women's Autobiography - War and Trauma (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003)
V. Stewart
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Examining a range of twentieth century writers, including Vera Brittain, Anne Frank and Eva Hoffman, this study focuses on how recent theories of trauma can elucidate the narrative strategies employed in their autobiographical writing. The historical circumstances of each author are also considered. The result is a book which provides a vivid sense of how women writers have attempted to encompass key events of the twentieth century, particularly the First World War and the Holocaust, within their life stories.

Manliness and the Boys' Story Paper in Britain: A Cultural History, 1855-1940 (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003): K Boyd Manliness and the Boys' Story Paper in Britain: A Cultural History, 1855-1940 (Paperback, 1st ed. 2003)
K Boyd
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this pioneering work about the precursor to the comic book, Kelly Boyd traces the evolution of the boys' story paper and its impact on the imaginative world of working-class readers. From the penny dreadful and the Boy's Own Paper to the tales of Billy Bunter and Sexton Blake, this cultural form shaped ideas about gender, race, class and empire in response to social change. This study is an important analysis of a neglected part of popular culture.

Sexuality, Obscenity and Community - Women, Muslims, and the Hindu Public in Colonial India (Paperback, 2001 ed.): C. Gupta Sexuality, Obscenity and Community - Women, Muslims, and the Hindu Public in Colonial India (Paperback, 2001 ed.)
C. Gupta
R4,249 Discovery Miles 42 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Through analysis of an impressive array of "low" and "high" Hindi literature, particularly pamphlets, tracts, magazines and newspapers, compounded with archival data, Gupta explores the emerging discourse of gender and sexuality, which was essential to the development of notions of Hindu nationalism and community identity in the colonial period. The book offers an exceptionally nuanced account of Hindu gender politics.
