Internationally-recognized pain expert Don Goldenberg helps readers
better understand the intricacies of chronic pain through the lens
of personal stories, including his own. One out of three Americans
lives with chronic pain. Pain is the number one reason we seek
medical care and accounts for 40% of doctor visits. Chronic pain is
the most common cause of work loss world-wide. The yearly cost of
chronic pain in the United States is between $560-$630 billion,
higher than that of heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined.
Despite this, physicians and the public are woefully ill-informed
about chronic pain. The litany of self-help books available to the
public are largely misleading, quick-fix, junk-science. Although
there is a major push to better inform primary health-care
providers on chronic pain, they have been provided no authoritative
treatment of the subject. The Pain Epidemic provides the latest
medical information and pathways to better understanding and
treatment of chronic pain. Dr. Don Goldenberg, an internationally
known expert on pain, here discusses such hot topics as the opioid
epidemic, mind/body interactions in chronic pain, and gender bias,
as well as the role of cannabis and new potential pain treatment.
Interested readers will come away with not only a better
understanding of the pain epidemic but of pain itself.
The healing properties of colour and light have been recognised
since ancient times; today colour therapy techniques are used to
great effect in a range of complementary therapies and for personal
wellbeing. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to
colour healing and offers step-by-step instructions for treatment.
The opening chapters provide an overview of the science behind
light and colour, and a brief history of colour healing from
Ancient Greece to modern day. The characteristics of different
colours are then given, as well as an explanation of how each
colour relates to particular body parts and the major and minor
chakras. The core of the book offers a complete treatment
programme, teaching diagnostic techniques and a variety of
approaches including healing with prana energy, healing with touch,
healing with a colour therapy instrument, and absent healing. With
useful illustrations and diagrams throughout, this book will be an
essential guide for colour therapists, colourpuncture
practitioners, kinesiologists, reflexologists and energy healers,
as well as anyone with an interest in the restorative power of
colour.
This book offers an array of yoga, mind-body and attachment-based
skills for therapists to use with, and teach their clients. The
skills are organised around key trauma issues and symptoms, such as
how to introduce somatic work for safe and secure therapy, working
with dissociation, understanding trauma triggers and developing
boundaries.
How to turn ancient knowledge into a blockbuster drug. Throughout
time, humans have searched, collected, and effectively used plants
for healing. Currently, business in medicinal plants is
flourishing, and efforts are being made to transform traditionally
used herbs into modern drugs conforming to the high pharmacological
standards present-day. To achieve this goal, a number of problems
concerning the safety and efficacy of medicinal plant products need
to be addressed and solved.
This timely and original handbook paves the way to success,
systematically addressing the issues facing pharmaceutical
scientists wanting to turn a plant compound into a safe and
effective drug. Plant pharmacologists from around the world
demonstrate the potentials and pitfalls involved, with many of the
studies and experiments published here for the first time.
This is a valuable resource, bringing together information that
is otherwise unavailable.
Healing Plants of Nigeria: Ethnomedicine and Therapeutic
Applications offers comprehensive information on the use of herbal
medicines in West Africa. Combining an evidence-based,
ethnobotanical perspective with a pharmacological and
pharmaceutical approach to phytomedicine, the book bridges the gap
between the study of herbal plants' pharmacological properties and
active compounds for the development of clinical drugs and
community-oriented approaches, emphasising local use. It
demonstrates how the framework of African traditional medicine can
be preserved in a contemporary clinical context. The book outlines
the history and beliefs surrounding the traditional use of herbs by
the local population alongside their application in contemporary
phytotherapy in Nigeria and West Africa. It features a critical
assessment of the scientific rationale behind the use of these
plants in ethnomedicine and offers a composite catalogue of
phytotherapeutic and wellness agents, detailing the safety profile,
efficacy, and scientific integrity of plants used to treat diseases
and optimise health. Features: An ethnobotanical survey containing
over 200 full-colour photographs of Nigerian and West African
plants. A unique combination of ethnobotany and pharmacognosy,
bridging the divide between pharmaceutical and community-oriented
approaches to herbal medicine research. Contextual discussion of
the therapeutic potential of Nigerian herbal medicine. Offers a
template which can be used to separate the superstitious aspects of
ethnomedicine from culturally inherited deposits of knowledge. A
handbook for herbal and natural medicine practitioners, the book is
aimed at African thinkers, scientists, healthcare providers and
students of pharmacology and ethnomedicine.
A unique and essential textbook bridging the gap between herbal
medicine therapeutics and orthodox medicine. Based upon a
constitutional approach to treatment, The Handbook of
Constitutional and Energetic Herbal Medicine is a synthesis of the
traditional herbal approach integrated with biomedical constructs.
While this holistic approach to treatment may seem incompatible
with the biomedical approach, this is largely due to the lack of
understanding of the medical interpretation of holism. In fact, the
spirit, mind, body axis can be understood in terms of
psycho-physiological processes and principles. It is a matter of
interpretation and adaptation of principle. This book will appeal
to those involved in both complementary and mainstream medicine
seeking a holistic approach which is rational and interpretable in
biomedical terms.
When treating a client who has suffered from interpersonal
trauma-whether chronic childhood abuse or domestic violence, for
example-talk therapy isn't always the most effective course. For
these individuals, the trauma and its effects are so entrenched, so
complex, that reducing their experience to a set of symptoms or
suggesting a change in cognitive frame or behavioural pattern
ignores a very basic but critical player: the body. In cases of
complex trauma, mental health professionals largely agree that the
body itself contains and manifests much of the suffering-self
hatred, shame and fear. Take, for example, a woman who experienced
years of childhood sexual abuse and, though very successful in her
professional life, has periods of not being able to feel her limbs,
sensing an overall disconnection from her very physical being.
Reorienting clients to their bodies and building their "body sense"
can be the very key to unlocking their pain and building a path
toward healing. Based on research studies conducted at the renowned
Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, this book presents the
successful intervention known as Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY), an
evidence-based programme for traumatised clients that helps them to
reconnect to their bodies in a safe, deliberate way.
Practical and clear, this comprehensive guide to cranio-sacral
treatment of the face explains treatment approaches that can make a
significant difference to persistent and intractable conditions,
enabling profound transformation in quality of life through
whole-person integration. The book explores the eyes, ears, nose,
sinuses, mouth, teeth and jaw, and provides a practical means of
resolving the multitude of conditions affecting these crucial areas
in a gentle, non-invasive manner, utilising the body's inherent
healing potential. It covers a wide range from persistent ear
infections, dental disturbances, facial injury, sinusitis and
trigeminal neuralgia, one of the most painful conditions known to
the medical world, through to identifying hidden causes of
migraine, autism and chronic fatigue and patterns of ill health
arising from birth, early childhood and past trauma. Cranial nerve
dysfunctions, including polyvagal disturbances, are also included.
Hand positions and contacts are clearly presented with over 200
colour photographs and anatomical drawings. A comprehensive
presentation of the potential cooperation between dentistry and
cranio-sacral therapy is also provided, with contributions from two
eminent dentists, providing much needed information on this growing
field of integrative medicine. Essential reading in this rapidly
expanding area of practice, the book is fully illustrated in
colour.
In der Geschichte der Medizin spielen physikalische Heilverfahren
seit jeher eine nicht unbedeutende Rolle. Das Buch liefert erstmals
zusammenfassend einen Beitrag zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der
physikalischen Heilmethoden im 19. Jahrhundert wie der
Hydrotherapie, Heilgymnastik, Elektrotherapie usw. unter der
Berucksichtigung von Wasserheilanstalten. Der Autor setzt dabei,
neben Verweisen zu den naturheilkundlichen Ursprungen, den
Schwerpunkt auf den schulmedizinischen Hintergrund unter Auswertung
der umfangreich erschlossenen Literatur. Zugleich widmet er sich
der Geschichte ausgewahlter, bekannter Wasserheilanstalten. Unter
diesen erhalt die ehemalige Kaltwasserheilanstalt Laubach in
Koblenz eine besondere Bedeutung. Der Verfasser schildert u. a.
extrakorporalen Zirkulation" ebenfalls in Gottingen 1978
promoviert.
The debate over the use of Embryonic stem cells and the
questionable effectiveness of adult stem cells have led many
scientists and clinicians to concentrate their energies on
umbilical-cord-derived stem cells from healthy newborn babies.
Amassing a very respectable track record in terms of safety and
clinical utility, cord-blood stem cells can treat many diseases
such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke,
diabetes, heart disease and certain degenerative eye disorders.
From techniques for tapping maple trees and harvesting wild rice to
extracting dyes from bloodroot to making dishes from birch bark and
dolls with cattails, "Strength of the Earth details the many uses
of over 200 forest and prairie plants. Early twentieth-century
ethnologist Frances Densmore recorded traditions and techniques
relayed by dozens of Ojibwe women to create this invaluable
handbook perfect for readers interested in Native American art and
culture, organic gardening, natural remedies, and living off the
land. Brenda J. Child offers a fresh introduction focusing on the
power of female healers in Native communities.
More than thirty years ago, Richard Bandler set out to discover how
some therapists managed to effect startling change with their
clients, while others were arguing about theories as their face
patients waited in vain for help. Now widely regarded as the
world's greatest hypnotist, Richard Bandler observed and developed
patterns which became the foundation of neuro-linguistic
programming (NLP), arguably one of the most profoundly effective
approaches for self-development and change. Since coauthoring the
internationally influential books, The Structure of Magic Volume 1,
and Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton Erickson, M.D.
Volume 1, Bandler has traveled the world, honing his skills and
helping people solve problems and achieve goals when other
"experts" have been unable to help. Richard Bandler's Guide to
TRANCE-formation, he returns to his roots: hypnotic phenomena,
trancework, and altered states to provide a highly compelling
prescription for personal change. According to Bandler, "trance" is
at the very foundation of human experience. People are not simply
in or out of trance, but are moving from one trance to another.
They have their work trances, their relationship trances, their
driving trances, and their parenting trances. Some of these states
are useful and appropriate; others are not. With his signature wit
and contrarian approach to therapy, Bandler shows how anyone can
reset or reprogram problem behaviors to desired alternatives, with
lasting and life-altering results. Peppered with case studies and
more than thirty exercises, Richard Bandler's Guide to
TRANCE-formation, is an intriguing, engaging, and often amusing,
read for anyone, whether they are new to NLP, want to further their
NLP training, or simply want to make a positive difference in their
own lives.
A bizarre, rollicking trip through the world of fringe medicine,
filled with leeches, baking soda IVs, and, according to at least
one person, zombies. It's no secret that American health care has
become too costly and politicized to help everyone. So where do you
turn if you can't afford doctors, or don't trust them? In this
book, Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling examines the growing universe of
non-traditional treatments -- including some that are really
non-traditional. With costs skyrocketing and anti-science sentiment
spreading, the so-called "medical freedom" movement has grown. Now
it faces its greatest challenge: going mainstream. In these pages
you'll meet medical freedom advocates including an international
leech smuggler, a gold miner-turned health drink salesman who may
or may not be from the Andromeda galaxy, and a man who says he can
turn people into zombies with aerosol spray. One by one, these
alternative healers find customers, then expand and influence,
always seeking the one thing that would take their businesses to
the next level--the support and approval of the government. Should
the government dictate what is medicine and what isn't? Can we have
public health when disagreements over science are this profound?
No, seriously, can you turn people into flesh-eating zombies? If It
Sounds Like a Quack asks these critical questions while telling the
story of how we got to this improbable moment, and wondering where
we go from here. Buckle up for a bumpy ride...unless you're against
seatbelts.
Oral health loss is one of the major problems existing all over the
world and is one of the top causes of death when unmanaged. The
oral cavity is home to numerous pathogenic microorganisms, some of
which are responsible for the progression and development of
various systemic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and myocardial
infarction. Worldwide, 60-90% of school children and nearly 100% of
adults have dental cavities, often leading to pain and discomfort.
There are implications for the global economy as well, due to the
continuous burden of investing resources to maintain oral hygiene.
Not surprisingly, developing countries are disproportionally
affected. There is thus an urgent need to develop economical
solutions for the treatment of oral diseases. The trend of
exploring plants or plant-derived compounds for the prevention and
cure of death-causing diseases is on the rise. The use of
traditional medicine for oral diseases is an ancient practice in
which medicinal herbs play a major role. Medicinal plants have
minimal side effects and no denigrating properties. Accordingly the
use of medicinal plants to curtail oral pathogens has been reported
by a number of studies. The present book updates the issues related
to oral health, oral diseases and the role of medicinal plants in
overcoming orally-derived health problems. We also highlight the
knowledge gaps in oral health related problems with medicinal
plants as one of the solutions. Our ultimate goal is to encourage
future research and application of medicinal plants for economical
and efficient treatment of oral diseases.

Alternative medicine (AM) is popular; about 40% of the US general
population have used alternative treatment in the past year, and in
Germany this figure is around 70%. The global market is expected to
reach nearly US $ 200 billion by 2025, with most of these funds
coming directly out of consumers' pockets. Consumers are bombarded
with misleading and false information on AM and therefore prone to
making wrong, unwise, or dangerous therapeutic decisions,
endangering their health and wasting their money. This book is a
reference text aimed at guiding consumers through the maze of AM.
This second edition includes over 50 additional treatments as well
as updates on many others.
This is a study of the earliest extensive account of Chinese pulse
diagnosis, or more accurately, the examination of mai. Dr Hsu
focuses on a biography of Chunyu Yi, a doctor of the early Han, and
presents the first complete translation into English of the Memoir
in the Historical Records by Sima Qian (d. ca 86 BCE). This Memoir
contains biographies of the physician, medical case histories and
interviews, and constitutes a document of enormous importance to
the history of medicine in China. The analysis covers the first ten
medical cases and their rich vocabulary on touch, as used in
Chinese pulse diagnosis. The patients treated were mostly nobility
of the kingdom of Qi in Eastern China, who suffered from the
indulgences of court life and were treated with early forms of
decoction, fomentation, fumigation, acupuncture and moxibustion. To
date there is no book on early China of its kind.
