An Account of the Foxglove, and Some of its Medical Uses - With Practical Remarks on Dropsy and Other Diseases (Paperback):... An Account of the Foxglove, and Some of its Medical Uses - With Practical Remarks on Dropsy and Other Diseases (Paperback)
William Withering
R876 Discovery Miles 8 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1775, the physician and botanist William Withering (1741-99) was informed of a folk cure for dropsy that had as its active ingredient the plant foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). Ten years later, after thorough trials on more than 150 patients, Withering published this monograph on the medicinal applications of the plant, not least to keep less experienced doctors from administering it to patients without the proper caution, given the plant's toxicity. Withering was the first doctor to employ foxglove as a remedy for congestive heart failure, which is now the primary disease treated by foxglove-derived pharmaceuticals, and the results from his trials broadly reflect those produced by modern physicians. Withering's first major publication, A Botanical Arrangement of All the Vegetables Naturally Growing in Great Britain (1776), which includes observations on the medicinal applications of British plants, is also reissued in this series.

Nature's Pharmacopeia - A World of Medicinal Plants (Hardcover): Dan Choffnes Nature's Pharmacopeia - A World of Medicinal Plants (Hardcover)
Dan Choffnes
R5,383 Discovery Miles 53 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This beautifully illustrated, elegantly written textbook pairs the best research on the biochemical properties and physiological effects of medicinal plants with a fascinating history of their use throughout human civilization, revealing the influence of nature's pharmacopeia on art, war, conquest, and law. By chronicling the ways in which humans have cultivated plant species, extracted their active chemical ingredients, and investigated their effects on the body over time, Nature's Pharmacopeia also builds an unparalleled portrait of these special herbs as they transitioned from wild flora and botanical curiosities to commodities and potent drugs. The book opens with an overview of the use of medicinal plants in the traditional practices and indigenous belief systems of people in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and ancient Europe. It then connects medicinal plants to the growth of scientific medicine in the West. Subsequent chapters cover the regulation of drugs; the use of powerful plant chemicals-such as cocaine, nicotine, and caffeine-in various medical settings; and the application of biomedicine's intellectual frameworks to the manufacture of novel drugs from ancient treatments. Geared toward nonspecialists, this text fosters a deep appreciation of the complex chemistry and cultural resonance of herbal medicine, while suggesting how we may further tap the vast repositories of the world's herbal knowledge to create new pharmaceuticals.

Anthroposophy and Science - An Introduction (Hardcover, New edition): Peter Heusser Anthroposophy and Science - An Introduction (Hardcover, New edition)
Peter Heusser
R1,718 Discovery Miles 17 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first thorough introduction into the scientific basis of anthroposophy and anthroposophical medicine in the context of academic science. On a sound epistemological basis and in the context of current debates it analyses basic concepts of physics, chemistry, genetics, morphogenesis, biology, neurobiology, psychology, and philosophy of mind, with an emphasis on the problems of life, mind-body interactions, and free will. The result is a non-reductionistic anthropology acknowledging the emergent properties of body, life, soul, and spirit as equally real entities. This concurs with the basic concepts of anthroposophy and anthroposophical medicine, the justification of which is discussed in relation to the history and methodology of science as well as evidence based medicine.

Evidence-based Non-pharmacological Therapies for Palliative Cancer Care (Paperback, 2013 ed.): William C.S. Cho Evidence-based Non-pharmacological Therapies for Palliative Cancer Care (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
William C.S. Cho
R5,415 Discovery Miles 54 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cancer is one of the leading killers in the world and the incidence is increasing, but most cancer patients and cancer survivors suffer much from the disease and its conventional treatments' side effects. In the past, clinical data showed that some complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) possessed anticancer abilities, but some clinicians and scientists have queried about the scientific validity of CAM due to the lack of scientific evidence. There is great demand in the knowledge gap to explore the scientific and evidence-based knowledge of CAM in the anticancer field. With this aim, a book series is needed to structurally deliver the knowledge to readers. Integrative therapies comprise a variety of non-pharmacological interventions that assist in alleviating physical and psychological symptoms. Apart from being a life-threatening disease, cancer and its therapy are usually associated with a significant deterioration in the quality of life. There is growing evidence that non-pharmacological therapies provide symptom and pain management in cancer palliation. This volume is a specialised book presenting the research evidence relevant to the application of a range of commonly used non-pharmacological interventions in supportive cancer care, including massage, acupressure, Qigong, yoga, mind-body therapy, mindfulness-based intervention, and aromatherapy. A number of scientific researches and clinical studies support that these therapies offer potential beneficial effects for cancer patients in terms of reducing pain, anxiety, and other symptoms. Indeed, non-pharmacological therapies are increasingly gaining acceptance in the healthcare community as complementary to conventional cancer treatments. Most of them are non-invasive, inexpensive, and useful in improving quality of life, and they may be accessed by patients themselves.

Cancer is a chronic disease. There are increasing cancer survivors after curative cancer treatment and this makes supportive cancer care an important area that more attention is needed. Chinese medicine has a long history of practice; it has aroused much interest from both Oriental and Western countries. A number of laboratory evidences and clinical trials demonstrated the effectiveness and ef?cacies of Chinese medicine for supportive cancer care. This book attempts to take a comprehensive approach to overview the different areas of Chinese medicine for supportive cancer care. This book not only serves as an introduction to novices to the area and a useful reference for those already involved, but also serves as a stimulus to these and others to employ alternative approaches to current cancer care. Pediatric Palliative Care: Global Perspectives (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Caprice Knapp, Vanessa Madden, Susan Fowler-Kerry Pediatric Palliative Care: Global Perspectives (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Caprice Knapp, Vanessa Madden, Susan Fowler-Kerry
R5,194 Discovery Miles 51 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The first of its kind, this book describes pediatric palliative care in more than 23 countries. Each region in the world is covered and countries included are both resource poor and rich. Authors are multidisciplinary and regarded nationally and internationally in their field. Clinicians, advocates, policymakers, funders, and researchers will learn how programs were developed and implemented in each country. Authors describe children for whom pediatric palliative care is needed and provided for in their country. When applicable, a brief history of pediatric palliative care is included noting especially policy changes and legislative acts. For example, the chapter on Poland describes how pediatric palliative care grew from the Catholic church into a national movement spearheaded by several health care workers. The Pole national spirit that brought them through a change in political regime has also been a driving force in the pediatric palliative care movement. The chapter on South Africa, for example, illustrates how a resource poor country has been able to leverage philanthropic and government funding tomake its dream of having an infrastructure of pediatric palliative care a reality. These are just a few examples of the inspiring stories that are included in this book. Readers from countries who wish to start a pediatric palliative care program, or advance an existing program, will learn valuable lessons from others who have faced similar barriers. Introduction and concluding chapters highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the modern pediatric palliative care movement."

Sanghamitra M. Misra, Ana Maria Verissimo
R1,645 Discovery Miles 16 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In response to the rise in chronic medical conditions--and the growing use of complementary and alternative therapies--among pediatric and adolescent patients, healthcare practitioners are taking a serious look at pediatric integrative medicine (PIM). Although it dovetails with current concepts of preventive medicine, wellness, and patient control, PIM is still an evolving field with its own particular challenges and opportunities.

"A Guide to Integrative Pediatrics for the Healthcare Professional" explores its subject through the more familiar lens of integrative medicine. This concise comprehensive resource synthesizes the knowledge base on a range of therapies commonly associated with PIM, such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, clinical hypnosis, yoga, homeopathy, and therapeutic massage, with findings on their effective use with children. Case examples illustrate uses of PIM modalities with allopathic medicine to treat young patients at various developmental stages, and the authors pinpoint safety and appropriateness concerns, answer licensing questions, and note clinical areas requiring further study. The wide-ranging information contained here will help support interest in PIM at the research, training, and practice levels. Features of the "Guide" An introduction to basic concepts in PIM.Trends in IM/PIM education.A survey of complementary and alternative therapies, including biologically-based, body-based, mind-body, energy-based, and alternative whole systems.Current evidence for IM in treating common pediatric conditions. The future of integrative pediatrics.References and links for further information.

Offering a front-row seat to the continued expansion of the field, "A Guide to Integrative Pediatrics for the Healthcare Professional" is a salient text not only for pediatricians but for all healthcare practitioners tasked with improving children's wellbeing.

Well Connected - The Art and Science of Tailoring Movement Therapy for Spinal Pain and Injuries - A Practical Guide for Pilates, Yoga and Integrated Movement Therapists (Paperback)
Josephine Key
R1,418 Discovery Miles 14 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Freedom to Move is an evidence informed practical resource which provides movement therapists of all disciplines with an exercise blueprint for rehabilitating spinal pain and many related 'injuries'. In essence, Freedom to Move describes what goes wrong in the spine and what to do about it. It integrates the applicable contemporary neuroscience around spinal movement and pain with the clinical evidence and understanding gained from the author's enquiring practice, and her exploration of various movement approaches and their contribution - or otherwise, to spinal well-being. It examines the relationship between healthy torso structure and functional control and describes and explains the author's model of spinal dysfunction - the remediation of which forms the basis of the author's model of care for the spine, The Key Approach(R). The book's main focus is on a practical, therapeutic exercise/movement approach which addresses the common movement faults and dysfunctions observed in people with spinal pain and stiffness. In particular, the Fundamental Patterns of control are introduced as important, innate 'key' movements which naturally provide the sound foundations necessary for a healthy spine - but which have commonly been 'lost' in the movement repertoire of people with spinal pain syndromes. These are re-established and reincorporated into various poses, movements and stretches by way of specifically directed mindful movement explorations. The client is helped to regain more optimal function and move out of pain - with more freedom. The approach is applicable within all industry models of teaching therapeutic movement: in the rehabilitation of spinal pain within physiotherapy, Pilates and Yoga; and in the fitness industry, for injury prevention, health promotion and optimising spinal health in exercise programmes in general.

Complementary and Alternative Medicines - Knowledge in Practice (Paperback): Sarah Cant, Ursula Sharma Complementary and Alternative Medicines - Knowledge in Practice (Paperback)
Sarah Cant, Ursula Sharma
R717 Discovery Miles 7 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until recently, complementary medical knowledge has generally been treated as 'marginal' or 'heterodox' knowledge. However, the rise of complementary medicine within health-care systems has signalled the end of its marginal status. With this have come concerns about how knowledge is generated within complementary therapies; what kind of authority can be accorded to such knowledge; the nature of research agendas; what ideas and skills are central to training and how they are transmitted. This book examines these concerns in relation to a range of healing practices: acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, reflexology, Chi Kung, herbalism and osteopathy. The contributors to bring sociological, anthropological and practitioner perspectives to the growing debate about the future of complementary medicine.
