Biogeography - An Ecological and Evolutionary Approach 9e (Paperback, 9th Edition): B. Cox Biogeography - An Ecological and Evolutionary Approach 9e (Paperback, 9th Edition)
B. Cox
R1,699 Discovery Miles 16 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through eight successful editions, and over nearly 40 years, Biogeography: An Ecological and Evolutionary Approach has provided a thorough and comprehensive exploration of the varied scientific disciplines and research that are essential to understanding the subject. The text has been praised for its solid background in historical biogeography and basic biology, that is enhanced and illuminated by discussions of current research. This new edition incorporates the exciting changes of the recent years, and presents a thoughtful exploration of the research and controversies that have transformed our understanding of the biogeography of the world. It also clearly identifies the three quite different arenas of biogeographical research: continental biogeography, island biogeography and marine biogeography. It is the only current textbook with full coverage of marine biogeography. It reveals how the patterns of life that we see today have been created by the two great Engines of the Planet - the Geological Engine, plate tectonics, which alters the conditions of life on the planet, and the Biological Engine, evolution, which responds to these changes by creating new forms and patterns of life.

Aquatic Habitats in Sustainable Urban Water Management - Science Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New): Iwona Wagner, Jiri... Aquatic Habitats in Sustainable Urban Water Management - Science Policy and Practice (Hardcover, New)
Iwona Wagner, Jiri Marsalek, Pascal Breil
R3,556 Discovery Miles 35 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Aquatic habitats supply a wide range of vital ecosystem benefits to cities and their inhabitants. The unsustainable use of aquatic habitats, including inadequate urban water management itself, however, tends to alter and reduce their biodiversity and therewith diminish their ability to provide clean water, protect us from waterborne diseases and pollutants, keep urban areas safe from flooding, and support recreational ecosystem services and even the aesthetic enjoyment of our world. Aquatic Habitats in Sustainable Urban Water Management - the result of collaboration between UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme and its Man and the Biosphere Programme - aims at improving our understanding of aquatic habitats, related ecosystem goods and services, and conservation and sustainable use - with a special focus on their integration into urban water management. The first part of this volume reviews basic concepts and challenges in urban aquatic habitats, as well as strategies for their management integration. The second part examines technical measures related to habitats management and rehabilitation, along with their incorporation into urban planning and their role in human health. The final part looks at current urban aquatic habitat issues and practical approaches to solving them through the lens of case studies from around the globe. Urban Water Series - UNESCO-IHP Following from the Sixth Phase of UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme (2002-2007), the Urban Water Series - UNESCO-IHP addresses fundamental issues related to the role of water in cities and the effects of urbanization on the hydrological cycle and water resources. Focusing on the development of integrated approaches to sustainable urban water management, the Series should inform the work of urban water management practitioners, policy-makers and educators throughout the world.

3D Recording, Documentation and Management of Cultural Heritage (Hardcover): Fabio Remondino, Efstratios Stylianidis 3D Recording, Documentation and Management of Cultural Heritage (Hardcover)
Fabio Remondino, Efstratios Stylianidis
R2,587 R2,425 Discovery Miles 24 250 Save R162 (6%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Documentation of our cultural heritage is experiencing an explosion of innovation. New tools have appeared in recent decades including laser scanning, rapid prototyping, high dynamic range spherical and infrared imagery, drone photography, augmented and virtual reality and computer rendering in multiple dimensions. These give us visualisations and data that are at once interesting, intriguing and yet sometimes deceptive. This text provides an objective and integrated approach to the subject, bringing together the techniques of conservation with management, photographic methods, various modelling techniques and the use of unmanned aerial systems. This interdisciplinary approach addresses the need for knowledge about deploying advanced digital technologies and the materials and methods for the assessment, conservation, rehabilitation and maintenance of the sustainability of existing structures and designated historic buildings. Furthermore, this book actively provides the knowhow to facilitate the creation of heritage inventories, assessing risk, and addressing the need for sustainability. In so doing it becomes more feasible to mitigate the threats from inherent and external causes, not only for the built heritage but also for moveable objects and intangible heritage that suffer abandonment and negligence as well as looting and illegal trafficking. The book is written by a team of international experts based upon their practical experience and expertise. It therefore creates a unique book that encapsulates the knowledge of this discipline required by anyone working in this field.

Presenting America's World - Strategies of Innocence in National Geographic Magazine, 1888-1945 (Hardcover, New Ed): Tamar... Presenting America's World - Strategies of Innocence in National Geographic Magazine, 1888-1945 (Hardcover, New Ed)
Tamar Y Rothenberg
R4,290 Discovery Miles 42 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

National Geographic magazine is probably the most visible and popular expression of geography in the USA. Presenting America's World presents a critical analysis of the world portrayed by National Geographic, from its formative years in the nineteenth century, through to 1945. It situates the National Geographic Society's development within the context of a new American overseas expansionism, interrogates the magazine as America's ubiquitous source of wholesome exotica and erotica, examines the ways in which it framed the world for its millions of readers, and questions its participation in the cultural work of US global hegemony. The book argues that National Geographic successfully employed 'strategies of innocence', a contradictory stance of representation which simultaneously asserts innocence - either the innocence of 'just watching' or the innocence of altruistic behaviour - while naturalizing Western hegemony. Presenting America's World not only considers the world that National Geographic presented to its readers, but also examines the magazine's own institutional world of writers, photographers and editors. Particular attention is paid to Gilbert H. Grosvenor, the magazine's editor for over 50 years, Maynard Owen Williams, a writer and photographer who worked on nearly 100 articles from 1919 to 1960 and Harriet Chalmers Adams, a freelancer, explorer and Pan-American activist who contributed 21 articles.

A Hundred Years of Geography (Paperback): T.W. Freeman A Hundred Years of Geography (Paperback)
T.W. Freeman
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Far from dissolving, this effort demonstates the ongoing vitality of geography as a profession. In a world increasingly sensitive to the problems of people and resources, geography has constantly provided the basic information for its sister sciences, economics, political science, sociology and demography, This book turns, attention to geography itself, in an incisive survey of the development of the discipline as a science.

"A Hundred Years of Geography" draws together the threads of a century of progress, from the first scientific explorations and mappings to present-day trends toward specialization and generalization. It contains a synoptic view of the development of the various aspects of geography, showing how the field has been differentiated from associated disciplines and how it has differentiated and specialized within itself.

The book also offers two important reference tools: a bibliography of the important geographical works published throughout the world, and biographical sketches of ninety important geographers. It is informative, stimulating, urbane and civilized reading, as well as being an excellent introductory text and reference work to recent scholarship in the field of geography.

Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain, Volume 2 - A Critical Edition (Hardcover): Alexander Von Humboldt Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain, Volume 2 - A Critical Edition (Hardcover)
Alexander Von Humboldt; Edited by Vera M. Kutzinski, Ottmar Ette; Introduction by Vera M. Kutzinski, Ottmar Ette
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Alexander von Humboldt was the most celebrated modern chronicler of North and South America and the Caribbean, and this translation of his essay on New Spain--the first modern regional economic and political geography--covers his travels across today's Mexico in 1803-04. The work canvases both natural-scientific and cultural-scientific objects alike, combining the results of fieldwork with archival research and expert testimony. To show how people, plants, animals, goods, and ideas moved across the globe, Humboldt wrote in a variety of styles, bending and reshaping familiar writerly conventions to keep readers attentive to new inputs. Above all, he wanted his readers to keep an open mind when confronted with cultural and other differences in the Americas. Fueled by his comparative global perspective on politics, economics, and science, he used his writing to support Latin American independence and condemn slavery and other forms of colonial exploitation. It is these voluminous and innovative writings on the New World that made Humboldt the undisputed father of modern geography, early American studies, transatlantic cultural history, and environmental studies. This two-volume critical edition--the third installment in the Alexander von Humboldt in English series--is based on the full text, including all footnotes, tables, and maps, of the second, revised French edition of Essai politique sur le royaume de de Nouvelle Espagne from 1825-27, which has never been translated into English before. Extensive annotations and full-color atlases are available on the series website.

Post-Disaster and Post-Conflict Tourism - Toward a New Management Approach (Hardcover): Hugues Seraphin, Maximiliano Korstanje,... Post-Disaster and Post-Conflict Tourism - Toward a New Management Approach (Hardcover)
Hugues Seraphin, Maximiliano Korstanje, Vanessa Gb Gowreesunkar
R3,576 Discovery Miles 35 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Post-disaster and post-conflict tourism has recently emerged as a prominent topic of research and considers new risks that jeopardize tourism travel to destinations that have recently experienced climate-related disasters, civil conflicts, and other challenges. This volume presents a host of innovative strategies that could be adopted by post-colonial, post-conflict, and post-disaster destinations to encourage travel and tourism in these areas. Policymakers are focusing their efforts on identifying and eradicating external and/or internal risks in order to protect the tourism industry in their regions, in line with a new spirit that is clearly orientated toward mitigating risks. This capacity of adaptation suggests two important things that are at the heart of this book. On the one hand, tourism serves as a resilient mechanism that is helping destinations in their recovery strategy. On another hand, this raises ethical issues related to tourism consumption.

Tourism Studies and the Social Sciences (Paperback, New Ed): Andrew Holden Tourism Studies and the Social Sciences (Paperback, New Ed)
Andrew Holden
R1,446 Discovery Miles 14 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Accusations have been made that tourism studies lacks a theoretical base. Such assertions are often based upon a lack of understanding of the relationship between the academic study of tourism and theories from the social sciences.
"Tourism Studies and the" "Social Sciences "provides students with a wider understanding of and grounding in the theories of the social sciences that tourism studies have been built upon. Specifically it will examine how the disciplines of economics, politics, geography, sociology, psychology and anthropology have contributed to our understanding of tourism. Extensive cross-referencing between chapters highlights the multidisciplinary nature of much tourism research. The book concludes by describing how the fields of environmental studies, development studies, feminism and ethics that transcend the boundaries of social science disciplines can be applied to tourism.
Each chapter includes:
* an introductory international case study to illustrate the application of a particular discipline to the study of tourism
* a brief introductory summary of the discipline
* a critique of its main theories and concepts which have relevance to tourism
* a discussion of how the theories and concepts have been applied to tourism using cases and examples

Reanimating Places - A Geography of Rhythms (Hardcover, New Ed): Tom Mels Reanimating Places - A Geography of Rhythms (Hardcover, New Ed)
Tom Mels
R4,002 Discovery Miles 40 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Time-space relationships are central to human geography. This book seeks to reanimate time-space, by considering the links between lived experience, various temporalities and particular places in terms of compounded and contested rhythms. Time-space rhythms emphasize the practical, symbolic, everyday and embodied qualities in the experience and making of our geographical environment. Bringing together a team of renowned geographers who have been exploring such ideas over the past decades, this book provides a unique and varied set of geographical approximations to the reanimation of place, nature and landscape, revealing a complex, disputed world of politics, sensory experiences and representations of space-time. Including case studies from Europe and North America, the book addresses some important issues, ranging from the symbolic orchestrations of landscape to deeply personal memories of particular natural rhythms.

UN Millennium Project
R1,052 Discovery Miles 10 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Millennium Development Goals, adopted at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, are the world's targets for dramatically reducing extreme poverty in its many dimensions by 2015 income poverty, hunger, disease, exclusion, lack of infrastructure and shelter while promoting gender equality, education, health and environmental sustainability. These bold goals can be met in all parts of the world if nations follow through on their commitments to work together to meet them. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals offers the prospect of a more secure, just, and prosperous world for all. The UN Millennium Project was commissioned by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to develop a practical plan of action to meet the Millennium Development Goals. As an independent advisory body directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, the UN Millennium Project submitted its recommendations to the UN Secretary General in January 2005. The core of the UN Millennium Project's work has been carried out by 10 thematic Task Forces comprising more than 250 experts from around the world, including scientists, development practitioners, parliamentarians, policymakers, and representatives from civil society, UN agencies, the World Bank, the IMF, and the private sector. This report lays out the recommendations of the UN Millennium Project Task Force 5 Working Group on HIV/AIDS. The Working Group urges the intensification and revitalization of prevention efforts, a stronger focus on vulnerable populations, and the expansion of antiretroviral therapy to reach 75% of those in need by 2015. Simultaneous expansion of prevention and treatment, accompanied by sustained investment in health systems, will enable countries to reverse the spread of HIV by 2015.

Challenged Borderlands - Transcending Political and Cultural Boundaries (Hardcover, New Ed): Vera Pavlakovich-Kochi, Barbara J... Challenged Borderlands - Transcending Political and Cultural Boundaries (Hardcover, New Ed)
Vera Pavlakovich-Kochi, Barbara J Morehouse
R3,860 Discovery Miles 38 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the early 1990s, borders within Europe and between the United States and Mexico began to open. The increasing flow of goods, capital, ideas and people across boundaries promised to reduce physical and cognitive distances. Simultaneously, challenges to identity have arisen within and between the European nation-states, driven not only by internal cultural and political dynamics, but also by processes of globalization. Concurrently, the US-Mexican border emerged in public consciousness as a location of new opportunities, largely due to public perception of the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This book explores some of the contradictory, yet simultaneous, processes affecting border regions. A team of leading scientists offers a wide range of perspectives on global, national, regional and local processes, and provides a useful matrix for understanding their complex, multilayered implications. Key concepts such as globalization, borders and identities are illustrated through local and regional case studies.
