Power and Authority in Internet Governance - Return of the State? (Hardcover): Blayne Haggart, Natasha Tusikov, Jan Aart Scholte Power and Authority in Internet Governance - Return of the State? (Hardcover)
Blayne Haggart, Natasha Tusikov, Jan Aart Scholte
R4,505 Discovery Miles 45 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Power and Authority in Internet Governance investigates the hotly contested role of the state in today's digital society. The book asks: Is the state "back" in internet regulation? If so, what forms are state involvement taking, and with what consequences for the future? The volume includes case studies from across the world and addresses a wide range of issues regarding internet infrastructure, data and content. The book pushes the debate beyond a simplistic dichotomy between liberalism and authoritarianism in order to consider also greater state involvement based on values of democracy and human rights. Seeing internet governance as a complex arena where power is contested among diverse non-state and state actors across local, national, regional and global scales, the book offers a critical and nuanced discussion of how the internet is governed - and how it should be governed. Power and Authority in Internet Governance provides an important resource for researchers across international relations, global governance, science and technology studies and law as well as policymakers and analysts concerned with regulating the global internet.

Highway of Dreams - A Critical View Along the Information Superhighway (Hardcover): A.Michael Noll Highway of Dreams - A Critical View Along the Information Superhighway (Hardcover)
A.Michael Noll
R3,066 Discovery Miles 30 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This important volume reviews the history of the telecommunication superhighway pointing out its beginnings in the interactive TV and broadband highway of the wired cities more than two decades ago. It explains the technological uncertainties of the superhighway and many of its futuristic services, and also gives an understandable review of the technological principles behind today's modern telecommunication networks and systems.
Recognizing that technology is only one factor in shaping the future, the author, a well-recognized telecommunications expert, analyzes the financial, policy, business, and consumer issues that undermine the superhighway. The book concludes by showing that today's switched telephone network and CATV systems already form a telecommunication superhighway carrying voice, data, image, and video communication for a wide variety of services that enable us to stay in contact with anyone anywhere on our planet.
"Highway of Dreams" is written clearly with understandable explanations for nonspecialists. It challenges the technological utopia offered by the promoters of the superhighway and suggests that consumer needs, finance, corporate culture, and policy often have far greater impact on the future than technology alone.

Innovation And Diffusion Of Software Technology - Mapping Strategies (Hardcover, New): Hugh Pattinson, Arch G. Woodside Innovation And Diffusion Of Software Technology - Mapping Strategies (Hardcover, New)
Hugh Pattinson, Arch G. Woodside
R6,173 Discovery Miles 61 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines B2B decision making processes for software application development. To learn what really happens and why it happens, this study provides a multi-level ???hermeneutic system??? starting with written accounts of decision-making associated with development and delivery of new software applications ??? these accounts are then revisited through multiple rounds of researcher and informant interpretations.
The framework and supporting analysis is applied to six application software case studies that created new Internet-based software applications which were either disruptive or supporting disruptive innovations. The findings from six case studies suggest that the hermeneutic research framework proposals provide a strong systematic platform to analyse and interpret decision-making with deep prospective, introspective, retrospective, and with imaginatively unbounded current and future perspectives.
*The author, Arch Woodside received the 1998 Living Legend in Marketing Award
*International in scope
*Provides DSA Models, event chronology maps, and cognitive maps for more comprehensive analysis
*Includes individual case study and cross-case findings for new theory development

Human Rights and the Digital Divide (Paperback): Anne Peacock Human Rights and the Digital Divide (Paperback)
Anne Peacock
R1,434 Discovery Miles 14 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Internet's importance for freedom of expression and other rights comes in part from the ability it bestows on users to create and share information, rather than just receive it. Within the context of existing freedom of expression guarantees, this book critically evaluates the goal of bridging the 'digital divide' - the gap between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not. Central to this analysis is the examination of two questions: first, is there a right to access the Internet, and if so, what does that right look like and how far does it extend? Second, if there is a right to access the Internet, is there a legal obligation on States to overcome the digital divide? Through examination of this debate's history, analysis of case law in the European Court of Human Rights and Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and a case study of one digital inclusion programme in Jalisco, Mexico, this book concludes that there is indeed currently a legal right to Internet access, but one that it is very limited in scope. The 2012 Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and the Internet is aspirational in nature, rather than a representative summary of current protections afforded by the international human rights legal framework. This book establishes a critical foundation from which some of these aspirations could be advanced in the future. The digital divide is not just a human rights challenge nor will it be overcome through human rights law alone. Nevertheless, human rights law could and should do more than it has thus far.

The Internet, Social Networks and Civic Engagement in Chinese Societies (Paperback): Wenhong Chen The Internet, Social Networks and Civic Engagement in Chinese Societies (Paperback)
Wenhong Chen
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Internet in China reflects many contradictions and complexities of the society in which it is embedded. Despite the growing significance of digital media and communication technologies, research on their contingent, non-linear, and sometimes paradoxical impact on civic engagement remains theoretically underdeveloped and empirically understudied. As importantly, many studies on the internet's implications in Chinese societies have focused on China. This book draws on a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to advance a balanced and context-rich understanding of the effects of digital media and communication technologies, especially social media, for state legitimacy, the rise of issue-based networks, the growth of the public sphere, and various forms of civic engagement in China, Taiwan, and the global Chinese diaspora. Using ethnography, interview, experiment, survey, and the big data method, scholars from North America, Europe, and Asia show that the couture and impacts of digital activism depend on issue and context. This book was originally published as a special issue of Information, Communication & Society.

Journalism History and Digital Archives (Hardcover): Henrik Bodker Journalism History and Digital Archives (Hardcover)
Henrik Bodker
R4,492 Discovery Miles 44 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book showcases various ways in which digital archives allow for new approaches to journalism history. The chapters in this book were selected based on three overall objectives: 1) research that highlights specific concerns within journalism history through digital archives; 2) discussions of digital methodologies, as well as specific applications, that are accessible for journalism scholars with no prior experiences with such approaches; and 3) that journalism history and digital archives are connected in other ways than through specific methods, i.e., that the connection raises larger questions of historiography and power. The contributions address cases and developments in Asia, South and North America and Europe; and range from long-range, big-data, machine-leaning and topic modelling studies of journalistic characteristics and meta-journalistic discourses to critiques of archival practices and access in relation to gender, social movements and poverty. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Digital Journalism.

R1,565 Discovery Miles 15 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Internet Newspapers: The Making of a Mainstream Medium" examines newspapers on the Internet, and addresses the emergence of online newspapers and the delivery of news through this outlet. Utilizing empirical research, chapters explore the theoretical and practical issues associated with Internet newspapers and examine the process through which online newspapers have grown into a mainstream medium. This collection makes a substantial contribution to the understanding of newspapers on the Internet, covering their development and changes as well as the impact that news delivery through this medium has had on other media, audiences, and society. It also sheds light on improving operation and performance of Internet newspapers to better serve the public and gain competitive knowledge. The volume encourages additional scholarship in this area, and also shows how researchers can benefit from an empirical approach to their examination of Internet newspapers.
"Internet Newspapers" will appeal to scholars, researchers, and students of journalism and mass communications, and can be used as a supplementary text in advanced courses covering journalism, communication technology, and mass media and society.

Most books and presentations on networking stick to its behavioural aspects. This approach is necessary but not sufficient. Successful networking is about the successful initiation and nurturing of relationships with other business people, which requires emotional intelligence and an understanding of how to apply it in order to sustain networking relationships. When networking is not going well (or at all), many businesspeople's response is 'OK, I'm doing what you told me. How come it isn't working?' The answer is that people don't so much need behavioural tips (though these are always useful and are included in this book), they need to understand why they are getting in their own way, and how to move aside. On the whole, people don't successfully change their behaviour without understanding why they should. Network Better provides the necessary insight into what's going on as well as many practical, tried-and-tested suggestions and encouragements to enable you to do just that.

Changes in the media landscape present new challenges for scholars interested in the relationship between the mass media and civil society. Notably, the explosion of the Internet in advanced industrial democracies and its more limited introduction in other types of regimes has provided new pathways for communication. This volume explores the nature of the Internet's impact on civil society, addressing the following central questions: * Is the Internet qualitativey different from the more traditional forms of the media? * Has the Internet demonstrated real potential to improve civil society through a wider provision of information, an enhancement of communication between government and citizen or via better state transparency? * Alternatively, does the Internet pose a threat to the coherence of civil society as people are encouraged to abandon shared media experiences and pursue narrow interests? * In authoritarian states, does the Internet function as a beacon for free speech or another tool for propaganda? This book will be of interest to students and scholars of the Internet and civil society.
