Painted screens have long been synonymous in the popular imagination with the Baltimore row house. Picturesque, practical, and quirky, window and door screens adorned with scenic views simultaneously offer privacy and ventilation in crowded neighborhoods. As an urban folk art, painted screens flourished in Baltimore, though they did not originate there--precursors date to early eighteenth-century London. They were a fixture on fine homes and businesses in Europe and America throughout the Victorian era. But as the handmade screen yielded to industrial production, the whimsical artifact of the elite classes was suddenly transformed into an item for mass consumption. Historic examples are now a rarity, but in Baltimore the folk art is still very much alive.

'Louis C. Tiffany and the Art of Devotion' is the first volume to explore the vast assortment of church decorations and memorials produced by Louis C. Tiffany (1848-1933) and the Tiffany Studios. For over 50 years Tiffany oversaw the production and marketing of a multitude of decorative elements for numerous chapels, churches and synagogues, afforded by the late 19th century American boom in religious building. Although an important part of the ecclesiastical business consisted of the vibrantly coloured leaded-glass windows most famously associated with his name, Tiffany was interested in the bigger picture and employed designers, draftsmen, and craftspeople to produce a complete interior design, including mosaics, windows, floors,lighting, furniture, altarpieces, pulpits, candlesticks, headstones and mausolea, vestments and jewellery. This beautifully illustrated volume includes preliminary designs, cartoons, watercolour sketches and archival photographs designs and products, many never published before. In numerous cases these are the only surviving remnants of buildings which have long since been demolished.

Raphael Ritz (1829-1894) is one of the most important artists to have emerged from the Swiss canton of Valais. In the 1850s, Ritz, who later became famous as the "Raphael of the Alps," studied at the renowned Academy of Art in Dusseldorf, Germany, and perfected his technique in the genre of mountain painting, which focuses on the relationship between landscape and man. Ritz, who felt a strong connection to his roots, created landscape idylls in faraway Dusseldorf for an audience that appreciated regional peculiarities. At times with a touch of irony, he put his works at the service of a modern effort to illustrate the timeless character of everyday life. The coming of the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century witnessed unprecedented changes in society: rapid economic progress went hand-in-hand with appalling working conditions, displacement, squalor and destitution for those at the bottom of the social scale. These new circumstances presented a challenge to contemporary image-makers, who wished to capture the effects of hunger, poverty and alienation in Britain, Ireland and France in the era before documentary photography. In this groundbreaking book, the eminent art historian Linda Nochlin examines the styles and expressive strategies that were used by artists and illustrators to capture this misere, roughly characterized as poverty that afflicts both body and soul. Walter Pater's European Imagination addresses Pater's literary cosmopolitanism as the first in-depth study of his fiction in dialogue with European literature.
