Imperial Islands - Art, Architecture, and Visual Experience in the US Insular Empire after 1898 (Hardcover): Joseph R. Hartman Imperial Islands - Art, Architecture, and Visual Experience in the US Insular Empire after 1898 (Hardcover)
Joseph R. Hartman; Contributions by Bonnie M. Miller, Lanny Thompson, Krystal Stricklin, Alejandro Acierto, …
R2,001 Discovery Miles 20 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When the USS Maine mysteriously exploded in Havana's harbor on February 15, 1898, the United States joined local rebel forces to avenge the Maine and "liberate" Cuba from the Spanish empire. "Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!" so went the popular slogan. Little did the Cubans know that the United States was not going to give them freedom-in less than a year the American flag replaced the Spanish flag over the various island colonies of Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Spurred by military successes and dreams of an island empire, the US annexed Hawai'i that same year, even establishing island colonies throughout Micronesia and the Antilles. With the new governmental orders of creating new art, architecture, monuments, and infrastructure from the United States, the island cultures of the Caribbean and Pacific were now caught in a strategic scope of a growing imperial power. These spatial and visual objects created a visible confrontation between local indigenous, African, Asian, Spanish and US imperial expressions. These material and visual histories often go unacknowledged, but serve as uncomplicated "proof" for the visible confrontation between the US and the new island territories. The essays in this volume contribute to an important art-historical, visual cultural, architectural, and materialist critique of a growing body of scholarship on the US Empire and the War of 1898. Imperial Islands seeks to reimagine the history and cultural politics of art, architecture, and visual experience in the US insular context. The authors of this volume propose a new direction of visual culture and spatial experience through nuanced terrains for writing, envisioning, and revising US-American, Caribbean, and Pacific histories. These original essays address the role of art and architecture in expressions of state power; racialized and gendered representations of the United States and its island colonies; and forms of resistance to US cultural presence. Featuring truly interdisciplinary approaches, Imperial Islands offers readers a new way of learning the ongoing significance of vision and experience in the US Empire today, particularly for Caribbean, Latinx, Philipinx, and Pacific Island communities.

This text is in English & Portuguese. The Luz Integrated Health Complex, comprising the Hospital da Luz and the Casas da Cidade (Senior Residences), is situated in the Luz neighbourhood, to the north of Lisbon. Designed by the Lisbon-based architectural firm RISCO, it is seen as a benchmark for state-of-the-art developments in hospital architecture. In her text Catherine Slessor describes it as follows: 'This project is striking on many levels, but most notably in the way that it rationalises, dignifies and humanises a large and complex healthcare programme. Perhaps the best and most paradoxical epithet that any critic can offer is that the Hospital da Luz doesn't particularly look or feel like a hospital. Rather, the architecture reconceptualises the notion what that might be, and then skilfully socialises this notion so that it becomes a built and experiential reality. And in doing so, another subtle shift is applied to the evolving continuum of the hospital as one of the modern era's most fundamental yet elusive building types'. There are further contributions by Luis Santiago Baptista and Axel Hinrich Murken who provides a comprehensive overview of the history of hospital architecture. In addition to the large selection of plans and images there are various texts by architects and engineers who were involved in the construction.

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) In recent years, few German buildings have received as much public attention as the capital's new airport, designed by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. Since opening in October 2020, BER can now be experienced by everyone. This volume of the gmp FOCUS series offers insight into the design and planning of the airport, which is characterized by short distances, a high degree of modularity, and flexibility of use. Based on a universal planning and design manual, all elements of the airport are integrated into an axial system and form an architectural-functional unit. An essay by architecture critic Falk Jaeger and an interview with the designing architects provide background information on the project.

This title includes text in English & Portuguese. In the second half of 2007, the baton of the EU Council Presidency was passed to Portugal. The country decided to hold the majority of the planned meetings, conferences and summits at a central location in Lisbon. The chosen venue was the Sala Tejo des Pavilhao Atlantico, which was converted to host the meetings on the future of Europe, culminating in the Treaty of Lisbon. The architects commissioned for this project, Baixa, Atelier de Arquitectura, successfully gave the venue - as well as the event - an impressive identity, marked by Portuguese culture and contemporary architecture. This book pays tribute to this ephemeral piece of architecture with a comprehensive collection of sketches, drawings and photos. In the accompanying and introductory texts, the project is viewed through the eyes of two well-known architecture critics as well as the Head of Mission of the Portuguese Presidency.

Monumental Harm - Reckoning with Jim Crow Era Confederate Monuments (Paperback): Roger C Hartley Monumental Harm - Reckoning with Jim Crow Era Confederate Monuments (Paperback)
Roger C Hartley
R816 Discovery Miles 8 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, the debate over the future of Confederate monuments has taken center stage and caused bitter clashes in communities throughout the American South. At the heart of the debate is the question of what these monuments represent. The arguments and counterarguments are formulated around sets of assumptions grounded in Southern history, politics, culture, and race relations. Comprehending and evaluating accurately the associated claims and counterclaims calls for a careful examination of facts and legal considerations relevant to each side's assertations. In Monumental Harm, Roger C. Hartley offers a road map to addressing and resolving this acrimonious debate.Although history and popular memory play a vital role in the discussion, there have been distortions of both parts. Monumental Harm reviews the fact-based history of the initial raising of these monuments and distinguishes it from the popular memory held by many Confederate-monument supporters. Hartley also addresses concerns regarding the potential erasure of history and the harm these monuments have caused the African American community over the years, as well as the role they continue to play in politics and power. The recent rise in White nationalism and the video-recorded murders of Black citizens at the hands of White police officers have led to nationwide demonstrations and increased scrutiny of Confederate monuments on public land. As injustice is laid bare and tempers flare, the need for a peaceful resolution becomes ever-more necessary. Monumental Harm offers a way to break the rhetorical deadlock, urging that we evaluate the issue through the lens of the U.S. Constitution while employing the overarching democratic principle that no right is absolute. Through constructive discourse and good-faith compromise, a more perfect union is within reach.

Bildungsschock (Education Shock) takes a look at the ramifications of the "Sputnik shock" of 1957. After the Soviet Union outmaneuvered the West with its unexpected success in the space race, education expanded on a global scale so as to cope with the "global educational crisis" in the postwar order. Under pressure from demographic and technological developments, social movements, and cultural changes, learning itself, but also spaces for learning were conceived and planned anew. In cooperation with artists, scholars, and architects, Tom Holert examines an era of reforms, experiments, and upheavals that current debates should rediscover as an archival resource. The richly illustrated volume accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, in the fall of 2020.

An Architectural Travel Guide to Utah (Paperback): Martha Bradley-Evans An Architectural Travel Guide to Utah (Paperback)
Martha Bradley-Evans
R1,196 Discovery Miles 11 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An Architectural Travel Guide to Utah invites visitors and other explorers of Utah to see the state's history, material culture, settlement, and natural landscape through the lens of its buildings. With more than 600 buildings as examples, this guide takes readers through Utah's cities and rural villages, exploring neighborhoods and other built landscapes. An adobe house from the 1860s speaks volumes about the transmission of ideas, respectability, the places of origin of Utah's white settlers, and their use of place-specific materials. The Utah State Capitol reflects the Neoclassicism preferred for statehouses throughout the nation, but its site overlooking a canyon to the east, the Great Salt Lake to the northwest, and the long view south down State Street - one of the longest streets in America - set it apart and make it very much of its place. From the most common vernacular cabin to the modern architecture of Abravanel Symphony Hall and the Salt Lake Arts Center, this guide uses the diversity of Utah's architecture to showcase the diversity of its people, their visions for the good life, and the particular responses of their built environment to the unique geography of this beautiful state.

Creating the South Caroliniana Library (Hardcover): John M. Bryan Creating the South Caroliniana Library (Hardcover)
John M. Bryan; Foreword by W.Eric Emerson
R992 Discovery Miles 9 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The South Caroliniana Library, located on the historic Horseshoe of the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia, is one of the premier research archives and special collections repositories in South Carolina and the American Southeast. The library's holdings--manuscripts, published materials, university archives, and visual materials--are essential to understanding the Palmetto State and Southern culture as it has evolved over the past 300 years. When opened as the South Carolina College library in 1840 it was the first freestanding academic library building in the United States. Designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument, it is built in the Greek Revival style and features a replica of the reading room that once housed Thomas Jefferson's personal library in the second Library of Congress. When the college built a larger main library (now known as the McKissick Museum) in 1940, the Mills building became the home of ""Caroliniana""--published and unpublished materials relating to the history, literature, and culture of South Carolina. Through a dedicated mining of the resources this library has held, art historian John M. Bryan crafted this comprehensive narrative history of the building's design, construction, and renovations, which he enhanced with personal entries from the diaries and letters of the students, professors, librarians, and politicians who crossed its threshold. A treasure trove of Caroliniana itself, this colorful volume, featuring 95 photographs and illustrations, celebrates a beautiful and historic structure, as well as the rich and vibrant history of the Palmetto State and the dedicated citizenry who have worked so hard to preserve it. A foreword is provided by W. Eric Emerson, director, South Carolina Department of History and Archives.

Lost Wonderland - The Brief and Brilliant Life of Boston's Million Dollar Amusement Park (Hardcover): Stephen R. Wilk Lost Wonderland - The Brief and Brilliant Life of Boston's Million Dollar Amusement Park (Hardcover)
Stephen R. Wilk
R2,243 Discovery Miles 22 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby -- the largest in New England, and grander than any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.

Designing for Heritage - Contemporary Visitor Centres (Hardcover): Ruth Dalton Designing for Heritage - Contemporary Visitor Centres (Hardcover)
Ruth Dalton
R1,553 Discovery Miles 15 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With tourists expecting higher levels of service, information and retail opportunities, visitor centres have become a vital component in providing access to heritage sites, historic buildings, landscapes of natural beauty and monuments. As a consequence, numerous architecturally renowned centres have been designed and built in recent years. It is perhaps no surprise that many have been featured in architectural awards, as they not only offer a 'jewel' of a project to architects, being small in scale but high in profile, but the buildings must also respond sympathetically to a rich physical and cultural context. This book examines the phenomenon of this relatively new, but increasingly popular, building type. It begins with a series of essays which explore the origins and key characteristics of the visitor centre, its relationship between place and landscape, its social role, and its focus on the visitor's needs. It then documents and critically analyses 20 award-winning visitor centres across the United Kingdom, including centres at The Giant's Causeway, Stonehenge, Brockholes, Rosslyn Chapel, Culloden and the Welney Wetland Centre. Each building study is beautifully illustrated with photographs and architectural drawings and includes the essential facts about the building, an experiential description and a full spatial analysis.

Central Switzerland, the region around Lake Lucerne, is praised worldwide for the prettiness of its landscape and the dramatic mountain scenery. The city of Lucerne, the nearby mountains and the lake are world-famous tourist destinations. Yet little is known internationally about the region's 20th-century architecture, besides Jean Nouvel's celebrated culture and convention complex KKL in Lucerne. The Swiss photographer Guido Baselgia has created a vast series of photographs documenting this scarcely published architectural world. His carefully conceived images show individual buildings as well as larger groups, revealing their specific architectural qualities as well as their setting within the environment. Included are private and public buildings, residential as well as industrial structures. 'Metropolis Central Switzerland' presents Baselgia's photographs of around 80 buildings in duotone and in a lavish landscape format book design. A discussion among four experts on architectural quality and on chances, challenges and failures in spatial development and urban planning complements the images.

Kenneth Breisch
R1,834 Discovery Miles 18 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although new technologies appear poised to alter it, the library remains a powerful site for discovery, and its form is still determined by the geometry of the book and the architectural spaces devised to store and display it. American Libraries provides a history and panorama of these much-loved structures, inside and out, encompassing the small personal collection, the vast university library, and everything in between. Through 500 photographs and plans selected from the encyclopedic collections of the Library of Congress, Kenneth Breisch traces the development of libraries in the United States, from roots in such iconic examples as the British Library and Paris's Bibliotheque-Ste.-Genevieve to institutions imbued with their own American mythology. Starting with the private collections of wealthy merchants and landowners during the eighteenth century, the book looks at the Library of Congress, large and small public libraries, and the Carnegie libraries, and it ends with a glimpse of modern masterworks.

Ley, a practical builder who turned dreams into reality. Together they realized Walter P. Chrysler's vision of an iconic structure that would (for 11 months) be the tallest building in the world. Alen is recognized as one of the most innovative architects of the 20th century. Ley rose from rod man on a survey team to head one of the largest construction companies in the world. Both men participated in the architectural revolution brought about by steel frame, curtain wall construction. This book chronicles how they designed and constructed the Chrysler Building and how the experience affected the rest of their lives.

R1,169 Discovery Miles 11 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over 157 years ago-before there was a Reno, Nevada; before there was a state of Nevada; and even before there was a Nevada Territory-there was a bridge over the Truckee River at a narrow, deeply rutted cattle and wagon trail that would one day become Virginia Street. There was also a small rustic inn and tavern occupying a plot of ground at the southern end of the log-and-timber bridge, catering to thirsty cowboys, drovers, and miners. The inn and the bridge were the first two structures in what would one day be a bustling metropolitan area, and to this day they still form the nucleus of the city. The Genesis of Reno, traces their history up to the present day. The 111-year-old concrete bridge that was replaced in 2016 by a magnificent new structure was honored for its longevity and unique character with placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

This richly illustrated book tracks the evolution of Fredericksburg architecture and guides readers through the streets of this once-westernmost German settlement in America, pointing out the log, fachwerk, and stone buildings that housed the town's full-time residents, its weekenders, and the businesses of the nineteenth century. Abundant with details uncovered by Hafertepe in his research, including corrections to construction dates based on newly tapped records, this guide features those buildings visible to visitors from the public streets and sidewalks. The author lists which buildings are open for tours and which ones have been converted to public use such as museums, stores, or restaurants. The buildings of Fredericksburg reflect memories of classic German construction and technique with a gradual transition to American styles, including a few remarkable decades that were neither purely German nor American distinctively but saw the creation of a regional style. This book allows readers to walk down the streets of Fredericksburg and see the layers of Texas history on display: everything from a pioneer log cabin to an art deco courthouse.
