Fire, Crime & Accident - Fire Departments, Police Stations, Rescue Services (Hardcover): Chris van Uffelen Fire, Crime & Accident - Fire Departments, Police Stations, Rescue Services (Hardcover)
Chris van Uffelen
R1,506 R1,112 Discovery Miles 11 120 Save R394 (26%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Architecture for rescue services has come a long way in the past decade. Buildings for the police, fire brigades and ambulance stations have lost their often purely functional and shed-like appearance and have begun to strive for recognition as an equitable architectural typology since Zaha Hadid's trailblazing Vitra fire station in Weil am Rhein. This building type certainly is a challenge as there are numerous conditions to be taken into account in terms of functionality and especially security. The examples chosen for this title show an amazing diversity of emergency architecture. The buildings presented frequently house more than one institution, using the latest technology and communication techniques to successfully combine different functions under one roof. The projects included range from the rural two-bay ambulance depot to police headquarters and airport fire departments.

Quality of design has been an indispensable component of successful sales strategies since time immemorial, and has only gained in importance in the age of internet sales. Retail shopping must be fun and passionately celebrated as an emotional experience. Since one trend chases the next, design must display sustainability and flexibility or to precisely feature the current collection. Whether it be urban-casual, street-fashion, pret-a-porter or haute-couture, the task is to provide the perfect stage for each fashion and to address the right target group. After a short historical essay, Fashion World shows how goods are successfully displayed today. The spectrum ranges from strident designer shops to elegant boutiques, to prestigious flagship stores. Every design in this book is tailored to its task.

Photographer Luca Zanier casts a look behind the curtains of the energy industry. His images open the doors to hidden universes, usually inaccessible to the public, highly protected as they are against accidents and terrorism. Abandoned worlds of concrete and steel reveal themselves to us, cathedrals of the modern age, temples of an energy-devouring society that radiate a cold logic. His images of imposing halls, endless corridors, massive floodgates and cryptic signs are as intimidating as they are fascinating. They seem extraterrestrial and surreal at times, as if taken from a science fiction movie; their aesthetics make us forget that we are looking at highly complex industrial systems. Systems that serve as well as threaten us.

Pharmacies (Hardcover): Chris van Uffelen Pharmacies (Hardcover)

Pharmacies constitute a special form of commercial architecture. The market for medicines, which is heavily regulated in most countries, has led to a veritable competition of the "atmosphere of space": since where product and price can no longer provide a competitive advantage, customer loyalty must be created with other means. In addition to professional competence and familiarity with the customers, that becomes above all the ambiance. That in turn translates to the modern and hygienic pharmacy, together with a friendly and assuring spatial experience. The selected examples show the design sophistication with which pharmacies today, from a functional as well as atmospheric standpoint, set themselves apart from the historical chemists' shelves - and the competitors.

This book compiles contemporary designs worldwide that break through the stereotype of doctor's practices as cold and often stressful environments. All projects aim at balancing medical technology and functionality with the need to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for the patients, visitors and staff. Apart from general practitioner's offices, those of dentists and a wide variety of specialists are also presented. The solutions range from practice design in an existing building to entirely new buildings for one or more offices. Doctor's Practices demonstrates today's architectural responses to the complex demands of healthcare ? a very fast-developing field.

Automobile Architecture (Hardcover): Chris van Uffelen Automobile Architecture (Hardcover)
Chris van Uffelen
R2,251 R1,679 Discovery Miles 16 790 Save R572 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The automobile has shaped the appearance of our streets for 100 years now. At the same building types have been created to serve it. Parking garages and gas stations as new species of architecture and showrooms whose exhibition spaces and display windows are markedly different from the usual businesses have decisively changed the cities. This book is dedicated to this type of architecture, showing esthetic and technical solutions of the past few years. Not a few architects have been unmistakable ?car freaks? (Frank Lloyd Wright), or been occupied with the automobile (Le Corbusier: Maison Citrohan), or have actually designed cars (Walter Gropius for Adler). This fascination of the profession can also be seen in the architecture built for the automobile today.

Manhood Factories - YMCA Architecture and the Making of Modern Urban Culture (Paperback, New): Paula Lupkin Manhood Factories - YMCA Architecture and the Making of Modern Urban Culture (Paperback, New)
Paula Lupkin
R787 R672 Discovery Miles 6 720 Save R115 (15%) Out of stock

Between the Civil War and the Great Depression, the Young Men's Christian Association built more than a thousand community centers across the United States and in major cities around the world. Dubbed "manhood factories" by Teddy Roosevelt, these iconic buildings served as athletic centers and residential facilities for a rapidly growing urban male population.

In "Manhood Factories," Paula Lupkin goes behind the reserved Beaux-Arts facades of typical YMCA buildings constructed in this period to understand the urban anxieties, moral agendas, and conceptions of masculinity that guided their design, construction, and use. She shows that YMCA patrons like J. P. Morgan, Cyrus McCormick Jr., and John Wanamaker hoped to create "Christian clubhouses" that would counteract the corrupting influences of the city. At first designed by leading American architects, including James Renwick Jr. and William Le Baron Jenney, and then standardized by the YMCA's own building bureau, YMCAs combined elements of men's clubs, department stores, hotels, and Sunday schools. Every aspect of the building process was informed by this mission, Lupkin argues, from raising funds, selecting the site and the architect, determining the exterior style, arranging and furnishing interior spaces, and representing the buildings in postcards and other printed materials.

Beginning with the early history of the YMCA and the construction of New York City's landmark Twenty-third Street YMCA of 1869, Lupkin follows the efforts of YMCA leaders to shape a modern yet moral public culture and even define class, race, ethnicity, and gender through its buildings. Illustrated with many rarely seen photographs, maps, and drawings, Manhood Factories offers a fascinating new perspective on a venerable institution and its place in America's cultural and architectural history.

Sustainability and the Design of Transport Interchanges (Hardcover): Brian Edwards Sustainability and the Design of Transport Interchanges (Hardcover)
Brian Edwards
R1,993 Discovery Miles 19 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The interchange is a new form of transport building which integrates into a single whole various modes of public transport, putting the passenger first (rather than the infrastructure). This book presents design principles for transport interchanges and offers analysis of best practice in the UK and abroad.

The author demonstrates how this complex new building type integrates with the city, on the one hand, and with different types of transport on the other. In this integration design in both plan and section are important, as is urban and landscape design. The idea of interchange is increasingly relevant as town planners, engineers and architects address the question of sustainable development with its emphasis on energy efficiency, social cohesion, access for the elderly, and urban regeneration.

University buildings pose an interesting challenge for contemporary architecture. The seven liberal arts have long ago been joined by countless other faculties and departments. This branching out of knowledge requires a specialization of its structures which play a role in the transmission of learning and the creation of new knowledge. In addition, subjects of interconnectivity and sustainability on campuses step into focus together with the multimedia requirements imposed by modern universities. For both teaching and research it is essential to enable the preservation and access to the constantly growing knowledge of mankind. This volume presents about 70 recents projects from around the world by means of texts, photos and drawings.

Serving as gateways to the cities, train stations were the most important urban building developments at the turn of the 20th century. One century later this building mission is experiencing a fascinating renaissance. On a world-wide basis new facilities are emerging that need to fulfill various functions ? so very often they have to serve as shopping malls. However, even small stations for regional trains, subways and trams belong to the past, if they are purpose-built only. They also have an important influence on the urban identity. Just like the larger facilities, they have to be able to develop in a confined space and in a historically often densely built-up environment. 60 international projects were chosen to present current station architecture both in terms of long distance traffic as well as local transportation structures, including underground systems.

Innovations in Hospital Architecture (Hardcover): Stephen Verderber Innovations in Hospital Architecture (Hardcover)
Stephen Verderber
R2,674 Discovery Miles 26 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This indispensable reference book captures key recent developments in the rapidly evolving field of sustainable hospital architecture. Today's architects must provide hospitals which enable high quality care for diverse patient populations in carbon neutral care settings, and this book succinctly considers what needs to be done in order to meet that challenge. The contemporary hospital is viewed in the context of global climate change, the planet's diminishing natural resources and the spiralling cost of operating healthcare facilities. Stephen Verderber considers the future of the hospital, and supplies a compendium of 100 planning and design considerations for the building type. The book includes twenty-eight case studies of built and unbuilt hospitals from around the world. These are grouped into five types - autonomous community based hospitals, children's hospitals, rehabilitation and elderly care centres and hospitals, regional medical centre campuses, and visionary (unbuilt) projects. Beautifully and extensively illustrated with many photographs, diagrams and floor plans, this is essential reading for all architects, planners, engineers, product manufacturers, clients, healthcare providers and government agencies involved in the present and future of sustainable healthcare environments.

Every city has a look and feel that informs how people respond to it. Visitors react to the skyline, clean streets, traffic patterns and the like, while its citizens speak of civic pride, heritage, and spirit. This love of place illustrates the passions and values of the society that fosters it. Some economists and thinkers refer to social capital, others cultural capital, when discussing the value added by the appreciation of the history and heritage of a community. The more people know about their hometown, the more they support it, love it, and keep it. The settlement that sprang up along the Texas and Pacific Railroad at milepost 407 is no exception. Here, for the first time, are one hundred of Abilene's landmark buildings telling the history, hopes, and humanity of this city. Readers will not only discover a host of remarkable stories in this book, but they will also find the architectural expressions of a civilization that have made their mark on the West Texas landscape. From humble cottages to the first Hilton Hotel, and from railway depots to an air force base, Abilene's unique contribution to the American story unfolds through the buildings that compose its cityscapes. Donald S. Frazier is a professor of history at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. He also serves as the President and CEO of the Grady McWhiney Research Foundation. Robert F. Pace is a professor of history at McMurry University. He also serves as the Vice President and COO of the Grady McWhiney Research Foundation. Wanted - Historic County Jails of Texas (Hardcover): Edward A Blackburn Wanted - Historic County Jails of Texas (Hardcover)
Edward A Blackburn
R1,373 R1,267 Discovery Miles 12 670 Save R106 (8%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Along with the settlement of the Texas frontier came rustlers, public drunks, gunfighters, and other outlaws. A jail in which to incarcerate the lawbreakers was thus often the first public building raised in a new town. Later, as government developed, public buildings--notably county courthouses and jails--assumed not only practical but also symbolic importance. The architecture of these buildings in the nineteenth century reflected the power and status with which the community imbued the government; many of the same architects applied the aesthetic standards of the day to both. In later years, the safety and at least limited comfort of the prisoners became concerns and jails were remodeled or abandoned to other uses in favor of modern, more utilitarian structures. In this heavily illustrated guide to the historic county jails of Texas, Edward A. Blackburn Jt. takes readers to each of the 254 counties in the state, presenting brief histories of the counties and the structures that housed their criminals. He provides general information about the architecture and location of the buildings and, when possible, describes the present uses of those that have been decommissioned. Interviews with local officials, historians, and newspaper publishers have yielded colorful anecdotes for many of the jails, Revealing photographs of many of the old jails have been gathered from local and archival sources, and Blackburn himself has taken pictures of extant buildings. Together, these words and images not only provide a survey of the way Texans have housed their criminals, but also, with the aid of thumbnail maps of county locations, offer residents and tourists throughout the state a guide to afascinating aspect of architectural and cultural history.

The spectrum ranges from the early house studies and buildings, such as the "Citrohan" houses, the Weissenhof houses, the housing estate in Pessac to large residential and commercial buildings such as the various Unites d'Habitation and the house of the Centrosoyus in Moscow, from theoretical works such as the development of the "Modulor", to the urban plans presented in detail, for example: for Algiers, Rio de Janiero, Berlin or Chandigarh. Each project is presented through photographs, plan material, documents, and sketches by Le Corbusier. The volume also includes a selection of his paintings. A biography and a complete list of works (buildings and projects) add to the content to create a concise overview of Le Corbusier's vast oeuvre.

R2,187 Discovery Miles 21 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Instead of building new hospitals that import old systems and problems, the time has come to reexamine many of our ideas about what a hospital should be. Can a building foster continuous improvement? How can we design it to be flexible and useful well into the future? How can we do more with less? Winner of a 2013 Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence

Answering these questions and more, Lean-Led Hospital Design: Creating the Efficient Hospital of the Future explains how hospitals can be built to increase patient safety and reduce wait times while eliminating waste, lowering costs, and easing some of healthcare s most persistent problems. It supplies a simplified timeline of architectural planning from start to finish to guide readers through the various stages of the Lean design development philosophy, including Lean architectural design and Lean work design. It includes examples from several real healthcare facility design and construction projects, as well as interviews with hospital leaders and architects.

A comprehensive history of one of Charleston's most significant landmarks On a hot summer day in 1929, the citizens of Charleston, South Carolina, participated in one of the largest celebrations in the city's history--the opening of the Cooper River Bridge. After years of quarrels, financial obstructions, and political dogfights, the great bridge was completed, and for the first time, Charleston had a direct link to the north. From the doldrums of the Depression to the growth of the 1990s, the Cooper River Bridge played a vital role in Charleston's transformation from an impoverished, isolated city to a vibrant and prosperous metropolis. Now obsolete and no longer adequately serving the needs of the Charleston area, the "old" Cooper River Bridge, and the "new" Silas N. Pearman Bridge--the Cooper River Bridge's larger sister structure, erected in 1966--will be replaced. Funding, design, and construction are presently underway to replace the old structure with a single, modern bridge. The two original bridges have become true emblems of Charleston, much like the Eiffel Tower of Paris or the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco. With their removal, Charleston will lose two of its most significant landmarks. This vast change in the city's skyline is sure to evoke memories from Charlestonians and visitors who have developed a special relationship with the old bridge. In addition to these reminiscences, the Cooper River Bridge has its own story--one of ambitious men and their dreams of profit, and of a city's dreams of prosperity. Upon its completion, the Cooper River Bridge was a grand symbol of Charleston's vision for the future, and the bridge recalls many significant themes in the modern history of the city. The Great Cooper River Bridge provides the complete history of this architectural icon, exploring how early twentieth-century Charleston helped shape the bridge, and how the bridge subsequently shaped the city. With more than eighty photographs, this illustrated volume documents a remarkable engineering feat and a distinctive structure before it becomes a memory.
