Again firmly rooted in Leonard Talmy's Cognitive Semantics, this new study moves beyond the analysis of single schematic systems in language contributing to the linguistic task of conceptual integration. It investigates for the first time effects of linking up Force Dynamics, a conceptual category generalizing over the traditional notion of the causative, and the Attention system of language, as detailed in Talmy's most recent extended draft version. To accommodate the conceptual and formal complexities involved at the interface of Attention, Force Dynamics, and Cognitive State and to allow for an appropriate degree of fine-grainedness the analytical framework affords, the exposition has been constrained to the golf scenario, where forces are at work in the physical and sociodynamic domains.

This book explores the results of language contact in Michif, an endangered Canadian language that is traditionally claimed to combine a French noun phrase with a Cree verb phrase, and is hence usually considered a 'mixed' language. Carrie Gillon and Nicole Rosen provide a detailed account of the Michif noun phrase in which they examine issues such as the mass/count distinction, plurality, gender, articles, and demonstratives. Their analysis reveals that while parts of the Michif noun phrase have French lexical sources, and the language has certain features that are borrowed from French, its syntax in fact looks very much like that found in other Algonquian languages. The final chapter of the book discusses the wider implications of these findings: the authors argue that contact does not create a whole new language category and that Michif should instead be considered an Algonquian language with French contact influence; they also extend their analysis to other mixed languages and creoles. The book will be of interest to Algonquian scholars, formal linguists in the fields of syntax, morphology, and semantics, and to all those working on issues of language contact.

This book is the first monographic study on forms of address in Polish-English subtitling from a multidisciplinary perspective. It departs from a contrastive analysis of forms of address in Polish and in English, then discusses the methodological tools and, finally, presents the empirical study on the translation of Polish forms of address in English TV subtitles. The study corpus contains nearly 100,000 words from three popular Polish soap operas and their English translations. Drawing on the methodological tools from descriptive translation studies, audiovisual translation and corpus-based research, the author presents a comprehensive survey of the translation techniques used by the subtitlers in rendering forms of address and discusses their implications. The book can be used by translation teachers, students and professionals.

This book is the first to combine interests in two currently popular approaches to language description, both of which are based on the observation of naturally-occurring, as opposed to invented, language. Systemic Functional Linguistics is a theory that focuses on meaning, choice and probability in language and on language as a social phenomenon. Corpus Linguistics is a practice, rather than a theory: a corpus is a large collection of texts that are used as the basis for language description. It is natural that SFL should turn to corpora as a source of information about grammatical preference, probability and variety, and some of the papers in this collection explore this dimension of the interaction between system and corpus. Conversely, corpus linguists have made generalisations about language that contextualize but also challenge the theories of SFL. Some of the papers in the collection expand on this theme. This book provides an in-depth investigation of single and double cliticization based on research in theoretical syntax and first language acquisition. Although the main focus is the analysis of data from Bulgarian, the work draws crosslinguistic parallels to some of the Romance and Balkan Sprachbund languages. Acquisition data from three original experimental studies with 79 typically-developing monolingual Bulgarian children aged between 2 and 4 are reported. This is the first study of the placement properties of object clitics in both pre- and post-verbal positions, and of the acquisition of clitic doubling for Bulgarian. The reported research has direct relevance to the current debate of the crosslinguistic variance in the acquisition of clitics.
