The Elements of English - An Introduction to the Principles of the Study of Language (Hardcover): William Branford The Elements of English - An Introduction to the Principles of the Study of Language (Hardcover)
William Branford
R4,495 Discovery Miles 44 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1967, this book was based on new descriptions of English emerging from recent research. It provides an introduction to the study of the English language for the first-year university student. It will also be invaluable to all those concerned with the teaching and learning of English as a foreign or second language, particularly the teacher in training and the university student.

The Phrase Phonology of English and French (Hardcover): Elisabeth O. Selkirk The Phrase Phonology of English and French (Hardcover)
Elisabeth O. Selkirk
R5,511 Discovery Miles 55 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work, first published in 1980, was a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. This study concerns certain aspects of the relationship between syntax and phonology in English and French. In particular, it represents an investigation of the universal conventions and language-particular readjustment rules which create the proper surface structure input to the phonological rules operating beyond the level of the word in French and English, and it offers a description of those phonological rules. This title will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

The Structure of English Clauses (Hardcover): David Young The Structure of English Clauses (Hardcover)
David Young
R4,660 Discovery Miles 46 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1980, this book provides a clear and practical introduction to a wide variety of English structures. It concentrates on a large and crucial area of English grammar, which covers units of higher rank than words, and structures that have verbs rather than nouns as their nuclear elements. Throughout the book, David Young focuses on the English language as it is actually spoken. At every point his discussion of syntax is closely integrated with meaning, and he pays particular attention to the ways in which speakers of English signal their intensions. The author points out how verbal patterning is meaningful, and outlines the criteria used by grammarians to distinguish one structure from another. The result is an analytical framework that can be applied to any real-life text in order to understand its structure. This is a book that will encourage a realistic, exploratory and investigative attitude towards the English language.

Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Hardcover): John Hawkins Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Hardcover)
John Hawkins
R4,650 Discovery Miles 46 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1988, this book is concerned with the definite and indefinite articles in English. It provides an integrated pragmatic-semantic theory of definite and indefinite reference, on the basis of which, many co-occurance restrictions between articles and non-modifiers are explained. At the general theoretical level, this book looks at the role of semantics in the prediction of all and only the grammatical sentences of a language. A generalisation is proposed uniting semantic oppositions underlying ungrammaticality with syntactic oppositions between conditions of application on transformational generative rules. A procedure is suggested for distinguishing semantic from syntactic causes of ungrammaticality. At a more particular level, the book explores the nature of reference. It examines an important selection of subjects such as the contrast between definiteness and indefiniteness, the relationship between definite and demonstrative reference, and the relationship between pragmatic and logical aspects of determining meaning.

Tense in English - Its Structure and Use in Discourse (Hardcover): Renaat Declerck Tense in English - Its Structure and Use in Discourse (Hardcover)
Renaat Declerck
R5,514 Discovery Miles 55 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1991, this book looks at tense in English, one of the most controversial areas of grammar. Prior to the book's original publication, the problems and interest in the subject had led to an impressive number of books and articles. Yet, despite the amount of work produced, nothing approaching a consensus had emerged, merely a series of conflicting theories and analyses. Here, Renaat Declerck provides a framework for a theoretical instrument which will enable the linguist to interpret the data correctly. The book is primarily theoretical in nature, but offers descriptive theory and a discussion of the various tenses which will make it a valuable tool for those teaching English. Theoretical and applied linguists will find this an important contribution to the debate on tense and a worthy starting point for future research. The book is not written from the viewpoint of any particular linguistic theory and does not presuppose any knowledge of tense theory, it is a readable and reliable guide to the area.

Grammatical Gender in English - 950 to 1250 (Hardcover): Charles Jones Grammatical Gender in English - 950 to 1250 (Hardcover)
Charles Jones
R4,500 Discovery Miles 45 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1988, this book explores the grammatical loss of gender in English. It demonstrates that from the end of the Old English period, there was a considerable time period, of about three hundred years, during which there existed "echoes" of the gender classification of nouns. The study records the best known conclusions concerning the behaviour of anaphoric pronouns under grammatical gender "stress" in the late Old English and Middle English periods. It focuses on a discussion of attributive word morphology in the noun phrase.

The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Hardcover): F. R. Higgins The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Hardcover)
F. R. Higgins
R5,509 Discovery Miles 55 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work, first published in 1979, was a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 22nd 1973. The ostensible central topic of this essay is a construction which is generally known as the "pseudo-cleft" construction. This essay aims to provide an overall picture of the construction, and show why another treatment of it is necessary. This book will be of interest to those pursuing the topic of copular sentences.

Anaphoric Relations in English and French - A Discourse Perspective (Hardcover): Francis Cornish Anaphoric Relations in English and French - A Discourse Perspective (Hardcover)
Francis Cornish
R4,502 Discovery Miles 45 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1986, this book focuses on Anaphoric relations in the English and French languages, a phenomenon that involves a complex interaction between grammar and discourse. Studies of anaphora taking a largely 'textual' approach to the subject have tended to underestimate the effect upon its formation of referential and discourse factors, while studies framed within a psycholinguistic and computational perspective have been inclined to minimise the importance of the purely linguistic features connected with anaphora. This volume places the study of anaphora upon a firmer foundation by examining both its nature and functions in discourse, by pinpointing the range of factors relevant to its operation in the two languages under study, and by attempting to relate the textual and interactional perspectives within a more comprehensive framework.

Cleft and Pseudo-Cleft Constructions in English (Hardcover): Peter Collins Cleft and Pseudo-Cleft Constructions in English (Hardcover)
Peter Collins
R4,500 Discovery Miles 45 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1991, this book examines the communicative properties of 'cleft' and 'pseudo-cleft' constructions in contemporary English. The book argues that these properties cannot be ignored in any attempt to provide an adequate grammatical description of the constructions. Furthermore, they provide a source of explanations for the patterns of stylistic variation displayed by clefts and pseudo-clefts. The book reports findings from a corpus-based study of clefts and pseudo-clefts in modern British English.

Pronouns and Word Order in Old English - With Particular Reference to the Indefinite Pronoun Man (Hardcover): Linda Van Bergen Pronouns and Word Order in Old English - With Particular Reference to the Indefinite Pronoun Man (Hardcover)
Linda Van Bergen
R4,499 Discovery Miles 44 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 2003, this is a study of the syntactic behaviour of personal pronoun subjects and the indefinite pronoun man, in Old English. It focuses on differences in word order as compared to full noun phrases. In generative work on Old English, noun phrases have usually divided into two categories: 'nominal' and 'pronominal'. The latter category has typically been restricted to personal pronouns, but despite striking similarities to the behaviour of nominals there has been good reason to believe that man should be grouped with personal pronouns. This book explores investigations carried out in conjunction with the aid of the Toronto Corpus, which confirmed this hypothesis.

Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Hardcover): Eugene Winter Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Hardcover)
Eugene Winter
R4,497 Discovery Miles 44 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study, first published in 1982, attempts to show that the foundations of a contextual grammar of English must be firmly based on an adequate definition of the sentence. This book will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

A Grammar of Gaagudju (Hardcover): Mark Harvey A Grammar of Gaagudju (Hardcover)
Mark Harvey
R6,282 Discovery Miles 62 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Gaagudju is a previously undescribed and now nearly extinct language of northern Australia. This grammar provides an overall description of the language. Australian languages generally show a high degree of structural similarity to one another. Gaagudju conforms to some of the common Australian patterns, yet diverges significantly from others. Thus while it has a standard Australian phonological inventory, its prosodic systems differ from those of most Australian languages, with stressed and unstressed syllables showing marked differences in realisation. Like many northern languages, it has complex systems of both prefixation and suffixation to nominals and verbs. Prefixation provides information about nominal classification (4 classes), mood, and pronominal cross-reference (Subjects, Objects, and Indirect Objects). Suffixation provides information about case, tense, and aspect. As in many languages, there is a clear distinction between productive and unproductive morphology. Gaagudju differs from most Australian languages in that a considerable amount of its morphology is unproductive, showing complex and irregular allomorphic variation. Gaagudju is like most Australian languages in that it may be described as a free word order language. However, word order is not totally free and strictly ordered phrasal compounding structures are significant (e.g. in the formation of denominal verbs).

Applicative Arguments - A Syntactic and Semantic Investigation of German and English (Hardcover, New edition): Solveig Bosse Applicative Arguments - A Syntactic and Semantic Investigation of German and English (Hardcover, New edition)
Solveig Bosse
R1,975 Discovery Miles 19 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Applicative Arguments: A Syntactic and Semantic Investigation of German and English presents formal semantic and syntactic analyses of German and English applicative arguments. These arguments are nominal elements that are not obligatory parts of a sentence. Both German and English have several types of applicative arguments, including so-called benefactive and malefactive constructions. More specifically, the research relies on tests to differentiate the different types of applicative arguments based on this contribution to meaning: Some applicatives contribute only not-at-issue meaning, whereas others contribute only at-issue meaning, and still others contribute both types of meaning. These tests are applied to both German and English to uniquely identify the applicative arguments in each language. Formal analyses of the identified type of applicative arguments are presented that provide an account for each type of applicative identified for each language, explaining the applicatives' differences and similarities.

Typological Studies - Word Order and Relative Clauses (Paperback): Guglielmo Cinque Typological Studies - Word Order and Relative Clauses (Paperback)
Guglielmo Cinque
R1,620 Discovery Miles 16 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, Cinque takes a generative perspective on typological questions relating to word order and to the syntax of relative clauses. In particular, Cinque looks at: the position of the Head vis a vis the relative clause in relation to the position of the verb vis a vis his object; a general cross-linguistic analysis of correlatives; the need to distinguish a sentence-grammar, from a discourse-grammar, type of non-restrictives (with languages differing as to whether they possess both, one, the other, or neither); a selective type of extraction from relative clauses; and a tentative sketch of a more ample work in progress on a unified analysis of externally headed, internally headed, and headless relative clauses.

Sarah L. Glasco
R2,049 Discovery Miles 20 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Parody and Palimpsest: Intertextuality, Language, and the Ludic in the Novels of Jean-Philippe Toussaint adds to the emerging body of work on intertextuality through expansion of critical examinations of the novels of this award-winning author, presenting him as the ultimate magister ludi. Sarah L. Glasco links Jean-Philippe Toussaint's novels to cross-disciplinary texts that include not only Russian, American, and Japanese literatures, but also film and visual art. Toussaint alludes to the works of numerous French canonical authors, such as Pascal, Flaubert, Gide, Proust, and Apollinaire, with a multicultural mix of Faulkner, Beckett, Nabokov, and Kawabata, for instance, and the works of filmmakers, painters, and ancient philosophers like Wong Karwai, Mark Rothko, and Aristotle. Ultimately, intertextuality in Toussaint's novels is linked to global cultures and new media via his contemporary literary landscapes. This in-depth study reveals, presents, and analyzes a multiplicity of intertexts, depicting the inner workings of their playful relationships to the texts as a whole, how they are intricately interwoven into Toussaint's narratives, and also how they relate to one another. Through a process of rereading and reinterpreting Toussaint's texts, Parody and Palimpsest illuminates both linguistic and narrative subversions, parodies, and pastiches, and, subsequently, Toussaint's ludic landscapes emerge. Readers are then able to unmask other identities his texts can embody in order to rediscover them through the language, literature, art, products, and thus culture of others.
