The Interfaces of Chinese Syntax with Semantics and Pragmatics (Hardcover): Yicheng Wu The Interfaces of Chinese Syntax with Semantics and Pragmatics (Hardcover)
Yicheng Wu
R5,335 Discovery Miles 53 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Interfaces of Chinese Syntax with Semantics and Pragmatics provides an in-depth exploration of a variety of interface phenomena in Chinese, a non-inflectional language, where to a large extent word order constrains its interpretation and defines its grammatical functions. Under the Dynamic Syntax approach, which takes the incremental left-to-right processing of linguistic forms to be a fundamental part of characterizing the relation between syntactic structure and semantic interpretation, a straightforward explanation is provided. The study features detailed analysis of a range of key grammatical constructions such as topic, passive, copular and cleft, where previous analyses were sought in pure syntactic, semantic or pragmatic terms. Clear and straightforward throughout, The Interfaces of Chinese Syntax with Semantics and Pragmatics will be of interest to graduate students and scholars of Chinese, linguistics and cognitive science.

Reconsidering Early Bilingualism - A Corpus-Based Study of Polish Migrant Children in the United Kingdom (Hardcover, New... Reconsidering Early Bilingualism - A Corpus-Based Study of Polish Migrant Children in the United Kingdom (Hardcover, New edition)
Marcin Opacki
R1,744 Discovery Miles 17 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the language of Polish-English bilingual children raised in the United Kingdom and their Polish monolingual counterparts. It exemplifies the lexico-grammatical knowledge of both groups and uses corpus-based grammatical inference in order to establish the source of the impediment of the minority language of the bilingual group. The author applies the methodology of corpus linguistics and narrative analysis to study the language of young bilinguals. He presupposes the caveat that a child-type competence exists and can be contrasted with an adult-type competence. He uses a variety of corpus frequency measures to compare the specific stylometric features of bilingual child narratives and their monolingual counterparts. The book focuses on how bilingual and monolingual language differs in areas such as the lexicon, morphosyntax, and semantics.

A Grammar of Fongbe (Hardcover): Claire Lefebvre, Anne-Marie Brousseau A Grammar of Fongbe (Hardcover)
Claire Lefebvre, Anne-Marie Brousseau
R6,873 Discovery Miles 68 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a reference grammar of Fongbe, a language which is part of the Gbe dialect cluster. It is spoken mainly in the former kingdom of Dahomey, which today comprises the southern areas of Benin and Togo. This book has three objectives: First, its main purpose is to provide a thorough description of the grammar of Fongbe. Second, this book provides language-specific syntactic tests which were developed in the course of this research. Finally, we provide the reader with the most exhaustive list possible of references on Fongbe, and on the Gbe languages in general. This book thus attempts to represent a "state of the art" of the language itself, and of the analyses proposed to account for its particular constructions. This book is of particular interest to Africanists, scholars interested in comparative linguistics or in the reconstruction of language families, and creolists who work on the languages spoken in the Caribbean area.

Grammatical Gender in English - 950 to 1250 (Paperback): Charles Jones Grammatical Gender in English - 950 to 1250 (Paperback)
Charles Jones
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1988, this book explores the grammatical loss of gender in English. It demonstrates that from the end of the Old English period, there was a considerable time period, of about three hundred years, during which there existed "echoes" of the gender classification of nouns. The study records the best known conclusions concerning the behaviour of anaphoric pronouns under grammatical gender "stress" in the late Old English and Middle English periods. It focuses on a discussion of attributive word morphology in the noun phrase.

Pronouns and Word Order in Old English - With Particular Reference to the Indefinite Pronoun Man (Paperback): Linda Van Bergen Pronouns and Word Order in Old English - With Particular Reference to the Indefinite Pronoun Man (Paperback)
Linda Van Bergen
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 2003, this is a study of the syntactic behaviour of personal pronoun subjects and the indefinite pronoun man in Old English. It focuses on differences in word order as compared to full noun phrases. In generative work on Old English, noun phrases are usually divided into two categories: 'nominal' and 'pronominal'. The latter category has typically been restricted to personal pronouns, but despite striking similarities to the behaviour of nominals there were good reasons to believe that man should be grouped with personal pronouns. This book explores the investigation carried out with the aid of the Toronto Corpus, which confirmed this hypothesis.

A Comparative Typology of English and German - Unifying the Contrasts (Paperback): John Hawkins A Comparative Typology of English and German - Unifying the Contrasts (Paperback)
John Hawkins
R3,220 Discovery Miles 32 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1986, this book draws together analyses of English and German. It defines the contrasts and similarities between the two languages and, in particular, looks at the question of whether contrasts in one area of the grammar is systematically related to contrasts in another, and whether there is any 'directionality' or unity to contrast throughout grammar as a whole. It is suggested that there is, and that English and German can serve as a case study for a more general typology of languages than we now have. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of linguists, including students of Germanic languages; language typologists; generative grammarians attempting to 'fix the parameters' on language variation;' historical linguists; and applied linguists.

On the Semantics of Syntax - Mood and Condition in English (Paperback): Eirian Davies On the Semantics of Syntax - Mood and Condition in English (Paperback)
Eirian Davies
R1,237 Discovery Miles 12 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1979, this book develops a grammatically orientated semantics (as opposed to a semantically orientated grammar) of mood and condition in English. It seeks to establish correspondences between areas of semantic organisation ('planes') and surface grammar, without reverting to an intermediate notion of deep grammar. The chapters explore topics including the differences between 'literal meaning' and 'significance', speech roles, and constructions of condition and reason in terms of the four panes discussed earlier in the volume.

Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Paperback): John Hawkins Definiteness and Indefiniteness - A Study in Reference and Grammaticality Prediction (Paperback)
John Hawkins
R1,365 Discovery Miles 13 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1988, this book is concerned with the definite and indefinite articles in English. It provides an integrated pragmatic-semantic theory of definite and indefinite reference, on the basis of which, many co-occurance restrictions between articles and non-modifiers are explained. At the general theoretical level, the book looks at the role of semantics in the prediction of all and only the grammatical sentences of a language. At a more particular level, it explores the nature of reference, examining an important selection of subjects such as the contrast between definiteness and indefiniteness, the relationship between definite and demonstrative reference, and the relationship between pragmatic and logical aspects of determining meaning.

An Advanced English Syntax - Based on the Principles and Requirements of the Grammatical Society (Paperback): C.T. Onions An Advanced English Syntax - Based on the Principles and Requirements of the Grammatical Society (Paperback)
C.T. Onions
R1,229 Discovery Miles 12 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1970, is the reissue of the sixth edition of C. T. Onions' standard introductory text-book, based on the principles and requirements of the Grammatical Society. The Introduction is designed to provide a full scheme of sentence analysis. The rest of the book is arranged in two parts: Part I offers a treatment of syntactical phenomena based on the analysis of sentences, while Part II classifies the use of forms. This book will be of interest to students of English language and linguistics.

Reference Time, Tense and Adverbs (Hardcover, Reprint 2015): Alfred Schopf Reference Time, Tense and Adverbs (Hardcover, Reprint 2015)
Alfred Schopf
R3,361 Discovery Miles 33 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.

The Structure of English Clauses (Paperback): David Young The Structure of English Clauses (Paperback)
David Young
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1980, this book provides a clear and practical introduction to a wide variety of English structures. It concentrates on a large and crucial area of English grammar, which covers units of higher rank than words, and structures that have verbs rather than nouns as their nuclear elements. Throughout the book, David Young focuses on the English language as it is actually spoken. At every point his discussion of syntax is closely integrated with meaning, and he pays particular attention to the ways in which speakers of English signal their intensions. The author points out how verbal patterning is meaningful, and outlines the criteria used by grammarians to distinguish one structure from another. The result is an analytical framework that can be applied to any real-life text in order to understand its structure. This is a book that will encourage a realistic, exploratory and investigative attitude towards the English language.

Tense in English - Its Structure and Use in Discourse (Paperback): Renaat Declerck Tense in English - Its Structure and Use in Discourse (Paperback)
Renaat Declerck
R1,381 Discovery Miles 13 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1991, this book looks at tense in English, one of the most controversial areas of grammar. Prior to the book's original publication, the problems and interest in the subject led to an impressive number of books and articles. Yet, despite the amount of work produced, nothing approaching a consensus had emerged, merely a series of conflicting theories and analyses. Here, Renaat Declerck provides a framework for a theoretical instrument which will enable the linguist to interpret the data correctly. The book is primarily theoretical in nature, but offers descriptive theory and a discussion of the various tenses which will make it a valuable tool for those teaching English. Theoretical and applied linguists will find this an important contribution to the debate on tense and a worthy starting point for future research. The book is not written from the viewpoint of any particular linguistic theory and does not presuppose any knowledge of tense theory, it is a readable and reliable guide to the area.

Sardinian Syntax (Paperback): Michael Jones Sardinian Syntax (Paperback)
Michael Jones
R1,461 Discovery Miles 14 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sardinian Syntax presents the first comprehensive synchronic description of Sardinian syntax available in English. Michael Jones combines a detailed coverage of the language with a theoretical approach that draws on contemporary linguistic theory. The book provides an extensive reference grammar and an invaluable source of information for all linguists whose interests extend beyond the world's major languages.

Arguments and Structure - Studies on the Architecture of the Sentence (Hardcover): Teun Hoekstra Arguments and Structure - Studies on the Architecture of the Sentence (Hardcover)
Teun Hoekstra; Edited by Rint Sybesma, Sjef Barbiers, Marcel Den Dikken, Jenny Doetjes, …
R5,730 Discovery Miles 57 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains 14 articles by Teun Hoekstra (1953-1998) on core issues in syntactic theory. Some articles focus on the structure of DP, others on the structure of the sentence as a whole, while others still deal explicitly with the parallels between the two. The papers are distributed over four sections: "Argument structure", "T-chains", "The morpho-syntax of verbal and nominal projections" and "Small clauses". More than half of the articles in this book are published here for the first time or appear for the first time in English. Hoekstra's work is characterized by a fundamental interest in the central questions of syntactic theory, most notably the relation between argument structure and X-bar structure. This concentrated interest led to a deep understanding of the notion of transitivity, with respect to both the status of the external argument and that of the internal argument, where "status" refers to both the content and the licensing. In this collection of papers, Hoekstra reports on his insights in these matters. As far as content and licensing of the external argument is concerned, this collection contains papers on the relation between passives and their active counterparts, the parallels between possessives and transitives and the differences and similarities between past participles and infinitives. As to the internal argument, we find papers addressing sentential complementation, verbal affixation and resultatives. And there is a whole section on tense, and its role in keeping the sentence together. One of the papers in this collection is Hoekstra's classic, but hitherto unpublished "Small clauses everywhere" (more than 70 pages), which summarizes Hoekstra's views on such issues as resultatives, particle verbs and double object constructions.

The Acquisition of Syntax - Studies in Comparative Developmental Linguistics (Hardcover): Marc-Ariel Friedemann, Luigi Rizzi The Acquisition of Syntax - Studies in Comparative Developmental Linguistics (Hardcover)
Marc-Ariel Friedemann, Luigi Rizzi
R4,229 Discovery Miles 42 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains a collection of studies that survey recent research in developmental linguistics, illustrating the fruitful interaction between comparative syntax and language acquisition. The contributors each analyse a well defined range of acquisition data, aiming to derive them from primitive differences between child and adult grammar. The book covers cross-linguistic and cross-categorial phenomena, shedding light on major developments in this novel and rapidly growing field. Extensions to second language acquisition and neuropathology are also suggested.

Formal Aspects Of Chinese Grammar (Hardcover): Jie Xu Formal Aspects Of Chinese Grammar (Hardcover)
Jie Xu
R2,159 Discovery Miles 21 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a collection of seven articles published in the past decade by the author. These articles are concerned with various issues including possessor raising, null subject, null object, pied-piping in logical form, focus marker, question formation, and adverbial reflexive. Each article has made a contribution to its topic. More importantly, these seven articles, taken as a whole, also constitute a window through which readers may look at the issues from a formal syntactic perspective and get a sense as how works have been conducted in the framework concerned, how arguments have been constructed, and how justifications have been provided in the field.

Constraints on Structure and Derivation in Syntax, Phonology and Morphology (Hardcover, New edition): Anna Bondaruk, Anna... Constraints on Structure and Derivation in Syntax, Phonology and Morphology (Hardcover, New edition)
Anna Bondaruk, Anna Bloch-Rozmej
R2,013 Discovery Miles 20 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The papers collected in this volume explore the major mechanisms, that is derivations and constraints, claimed to be responsible for various aspects of the linguistic systems, their syntax, phonology and morphology. The contributors approach these issues through a detailed analysis of selected phenomena of Modern English, Old English, Polish, Russian, Hungarian and Icelandic, offering novel theoretical and descriptive insights into the working of human language.

Studies on Scrambling - Movement and Non-Movement Approaches to Free Word-Order Phenomena (Hardcover, Reprint 2011): Norbert... Studies on Scrambling - Movement and Non-Movement Approaches to Free Word-Order Phenomena (Hardcover, Reprint 2011)
Norbert Corver, Henk Van Riemsdijk
R5,419 Discovery Miles 54 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon. Muhammad Al-Sharkawi
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

History and Development of the Arabic Language is a general introduction for students to the history of the Arabic language. It is divided into two parts; the pre-Islamic language up to the emergence of the first well-known works of Classical Arabic. Secondly, the transition from the pre-Islamic situation to the complex Arabic language forms after the emergence of Islam and the Arab conquests, both in Arabia and in the diaspora. The book focuses on the pre-Islamic linguistic situation, where the linguistic geography and relevant demographic aspects of pre-Islamic Arabia will be introduced. In addition, the book will also discuss the communicative contexts and varieties of Modern Arabic. The book includes readings, discussion questions and data sets to provide a complete textbook and resource for teachers and students of the history of Arabic.

The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Paperback): F. R. Higgins The Pseudo-Cleft Construction in English (Paperback)
F. R. Higgins
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work, first published in 1979, was a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Foreign Literatures and Linguistics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 22nd 1973. The ostensible central topic of this essay is a construction which is generally known as the "pseudo-cleft" construction. This essay aims to provide an overall picture of the construction, and show why another treatment of it is necessary. This book will be of interest to those pursuing the topic of copular sentences.

Subject and Object in Modern English (Paperback): Barbara H. Partee Subject and Object in Modern English (Paperback)
Barbara H. Partee
R1,280 Discovery Miles 12 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Subject and Object in Modern English, first published in 1979, deals with subjects in the English language (one of the two main constituents of a clause), first comparing two possible notions of derived subject and then re-examining some derived subjects which had been assumed to be underlying subjects as well. This title also concerns itself with the basic verb phrase relations; not only with direct and indirect objects, but locative and directional phrases, with-phrases, and of-phrases considered. This book will be of interest to students of English language and linguistics.

Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Paperback): Eugene Winter Towards a Contextual Grammar of English - The Clause and its Place in the Definition of Sentence (Paperback)
Eugene Winter
R1,240 Discovery Miles 12 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study, first published in 1982, attempts to show that the foundations of a contextual grammar of English must be firmly based on an adequate definition of the sentence. This book will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

Pattern in English (RLE: English Language) - A Fresh Approach to Grammar (Paperback): W.H. Mittins Pattern in English (RLE: English Language) - A Fresh Approach to Grammar (Paperback)
W.H. Mittins
R1,228 Discovery Miles 12 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1950, is a collection of what the author felt to be the minimum of English grammar relevant to efficient communication in language. The scope of this title was determined by collecting from children's writings examples of common faults and weaknesses, and it is through these texts that certain concepts emerged as fundamental, including predication, word-order, proximity, equivalents, variety and repetition. Pattern in English will be of interest to students of English language.

Cleft and Pseudo-Cleft Constructions in English (Paperback): Peter Collins Cleft and Pseudo-Cleft Constructions in English (Paperback)
Peter Collins
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1991, this book examines the communicative properties of 'cleft' and 'pseudo-cleft' constructions in contemporary English. The book argues that these properties cannot be ignored in any attempt to provide an adequate grammatical description of the constructions. Furthermore, they provide a source of explanations for the patterns of stylistic variation displayed by clefts and pseudo-clefts. The book reports findings from a corpus-based study of clefts and pseudo-clefts in modern British English.
