Scholarly Virtues in Nineteenth-Century Sciences and Humanities - Loyalty and Independence Entangled (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022):... Scholarly Virtues in Nineteenth-Century Sciences and Humanities - Loyalty and Independence Entangled (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Christiaan Engberts
R3,613 Discovery Miles 36 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Reflecting a growing interest in the history of knowledge, this book explores the importance of scholarly virtues during the late nineteenth century. The practice of science is moulded on notions of scholarly values, such as diligence, impartiality, meticulousness and patience, but here, the author focuses on the virtues of collegial loyalty and critical independence. By analysing how virtues were reflected in day-to-day scholarly work, and examining the possibility that these virtues may have come into conflict with each other, this book sheds light on what is often described as 'the moral economy of scholarship,' a metaphor which draws attention to the changeability of the expectations raised by virtue. Highlighting the pre-eminence and exemplary nature of German scholarship during the nineteenth century, the author provides a detailed analysis of four evaluative practices used by scholars across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences in a number of German universities. This allows a nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between collegial loyalty and critical independence in the academic working environment, and draws comparisons across varying disciplines. A welcome contribution to a growing field of research, this book provides a comparative and transdisciplinary overview of scholarly virtues and will be of interest to those researching the history of science and the humanities.

Written by a diverse team of experts, the chapters in the book's first part contain in-depth examinations of, among other things, Ellis's family, education, Bacon scholarship and mathematical contributions. The second part consists of annotated transcriptions of a selection of Ellis's diaries and correspondence. Taken together, A Prodigy of Universal Genius: Robert Leslie Ellis, 1817-1859 is a rich resource for historians of science, historians of mathematics and Victorian scholars alike. History of Philosophy I - From Heraclitus to the Sophists (Paperback, New edition): Michal Zvarik History of Philosophy I - From Heraclitus to the Sophists (Paperback, New edition)
Michal Zvarik
R656 Discovery Miles 6 560 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This coursebook addresses key presocratics from Heraclitus to the sophists, who stand at the origin of philosophy as cornerstone of European spirituality. Readers might find that already at this point we encounter timeless and actual questions concerning the human condition in the world, limits of our knowledge, or the problem of adequate articulation of reality. Later thinkers did not philosophised from scratch, but criticised or were inspired by their predecessors. The coursebook thus provides an introduction to presocratic thought as an important field of our spiritual history.

Affectivity and Philosophy after Spinoza and Nietzsche - Making Knowledge the Most Powerful Affect (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015):... Affectivity and Philosophy after Spinoza and Nietzsche - Making Knowledge the Most Powerful Affect (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Stuart Pethick
R3,505 Discovery Miles 35 050 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Pethick investigates a much neglected philosophical connection between two of the most controversial figures in the history of philosophy: Spinoza and Nietzsche. By examining the crucial role that affectivity plays in their philosophies, this book claims that the two philosophers share the common goal of making knowledge the most powerful affect.

The Embodied Soul - Aristotelian Psychology and Physiology in Medieval Europe between 1200 and 1420 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022):... The Embodied Soul - Aristotelian Psychology and Physiology in Medieval Europe between 1200 and 1420 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Marek Gensler, Monika Mansfeld, Monika Michalowska
R3,159 Discovery Miles 31 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains a collection of papers devoted to the problems of body, mind and soul in medieval Europe between 1200 and 1420. Modern discussions of the mind-body relationship seldom look back into the past further than the psycho-somatic dualism of Descartes which started the mechanistic approach in biology and medicine. The authors of the volume go beyond that fault line to investigate the tradition of medieval natural philosophy and its ancient sources and analyze the issues forming a borderland between physiology and psychology. They also demonstrate that the medieval tradition was rich and diverse for it offered a wide variety of the discussed problems as well as the methodological approaches. This volume is the first attempt to cover a diversity of topics and methods employed in the medieval debates on body, mind and soul as well as their interrelationships. The Embodied Soul is a must-have for all those interested in puzzling dilemmas of how a living organism functions and how its inner life can be explained as well as for all those interested in the history of thought in general. Grace and Freedom in a Secular Age - Contingency, Vulnerability, and Hospitality (Hardcover): Philip Rossi Grace and Freedom in a Secular Age - Contingency, Vulnerability, and Hospitality (Hardcover)
Philip Rossi
R2,384 R1,856 Discovery Miles 18 560 Save R528 (22%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the course of a long and distinguished academic and civic career, the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor has been, for articulate atheists and learned believers alike, an incisive, insightful, gracious, and challenging conversation partner on issues that arise at the intersection and interaction of religion, society, and culture. Grace and Freedom in a Secular Age offers a concise exposition of key ideas—contingency, otherness, freedom, vulnerability and mutuality—that inform his probing analyses of the dynamics of religious belief and religious denial in the pervasive contemporary culture he calls a "a secular age," within which religious belief and practice have, for many, become just an option. Those ideas provide the basis from which Rossi argues that, despite a clear-eyed recognition of the deep fractures of meaning and the pervasive fragmentation of once stable societal connections that a secular age has brought in its wake, Taylor also sees and affirms strong grounds for hope in a healing of our broken and fractured world and for the possibilities—and the importance of—active human participation in that healing. Taylor points to signs indicative of potent re-compositions and renewals taking place in religious belief and practice from its interaction with the dynamics of secular culture, particularly ones that make possible radical enactments of deeper human solidarity and mutuality, of which the one most often potent is the reconciliation of enemies. In pointing out these signs, Taylor suggests a richly expansive reading of the Christian doctrine of Creation, as it marks the radical contingency of all that is upon a freely bestowed divine self-giving: Creation is the ongoing enactment of the divine hospitality of the Triune God.

Spinoza In English, A Bibliography (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Wayne Boucher Spinoza In English, A Bibliography (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Wayne Boucher
R7,855 Discovery Miles 78 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This bibliography documents the entire 300-year record of books, monographs, dissertations and articles in English on Benedict Spinoza, as well as translations of his works into English. Arranged alphabetically by author or editor, and cross-referenced in the case of anthologies and "replies", this bibliography cites its own sources where appropriate and, in many cases, provides details on how to obtain out-of-print titles and unpublished dissertations. Additionally, it restores or corrects some earlier bibliographic detail and, beginning with titles from the mid-1800s, presents the citations in a uniform style. This second edition adds many citations, bringing the total up to moe than 2500 on the main level, with many secondary references to later editions and reprints. Occasionally an abstract is added when the author's title inadequately describes the contents. The book is fully cross-referenced with "Spinoza: 18th and 19th-Century Discussions" (1-85506-579-7).

Subjectivity In-Between Times - Exploring the Notion of Time in Lacan's Work (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Chenyang Wang Subjectivity In-Between Times - Exploring the Notion of Time in Lacan's Work (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Chenyang Wang
R3,617 Discovery Miles 36 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the first to systematically investigate how the notion of time is conceptualised in Jacques Lacan's work. Through a careful examination of Lacan's various presentations of time, Chenyang Wang argues that this notion is key to a comprehension of Lacan's psychoanalytic thinking, and in particular to the way in which he theorises subjectivity. This book demonstrates that time is approached by Lacan not only as consciously experienced, but also as pre-reflectively embodied and symbolically generated. In an analysis that begins with Lacan's "Logical Time" essay, Chenyang Wang articulates three temporal registers that correspond to Lacan's Real-Symbolic-Imaginary triad and also demonstrates how Lacan's elaboration of other major themes including consciousness, body, language, desire and sexuality is informed by his original perspectives on time. Filling a significant gap in contemporary Lacanian studies, this book will provide essential reading for students and scholars of psychoanalytic theory, continental philosophy and critical theory.

Interactive Wittgenstein - Essays in Memory of Georg Henrik von Wright (Hardcover, Edition.): Enzo de Pellegrin Interactive Wittgenstein - Essays in Memory of Georg Henrik von Wright (Hardcover, Edition.)
Enzo de Pellegrin
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The philosophical thought of Ludwig Wittgenstein continues to have a profound influence that transcends barriers between philosophical disciplines and reaches beyond philosophy itself. Less than one hundred years after their publication, his early masterpiece 'Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus' and the posthumously published 'Philosophical Investigations' have emerged as two classic philosophical texts, each of which has elicited widely divergent readings and spawned contesting schools of interpretation. This collection of original essays by leading experts offers deep insights into the forces that shaped and influenced Wittgenstein's thought on a broad variety of topics. It also contains the text - in both the original German and an English translation by Juliet Floyd and Burton Dreben - of letters and cards sent to Wittgenstein by the philosopher and logician Gottlob Frege, which shed light on their interaction during the crucial period when Wittgenstein completed work on the 'Tractatus'. This important record of a philosophical friendship is complemented by a scholarly apparatus and an introduction. Other essays featured in this volume document and discuss Wittgenstein's thinking on music and religion as well as issues that take center stage in the 'Investigations' such as Wittgenstein's account of rule-following. The volume provides an invaluable research tool not only for students of the history of philosophy and for scholars of both Wittgenstein and Frege but also for anyone interested in the intellectual history of the first half of the twentieth century.

Hip Hop, Hegel, and the Art of Emancipation - Let's Get Free (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Jim Vernon Hip Hop, Hegel, and the Art of Emancipation - Let's Get Free (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jim Vernon
R2,387 Discovery Miles 23 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book argues that Hip Hop's early history in the South Bronx charts a course remarkably similar to the conceptual history of artistic creation presented in Hegel's Lectures on Aesthetics. It contends that the resonances between Hegel's account of the trajectory of art in general, and the historical shifts in the particular culture of Hip Hop, are both numerous and substantial enough to make us re-think not only the nature and import of Hegel's philosophy of art, but the origin, essence and lesson of Hip Hop. As a result, the book articulates and defends a unique reading of Hegel's Aesthetics, as well as providing a philosophical explanation of the Hip Hop community's transition from total social abandonment to some limited form of social inclusion, via the specific mediation of an artistic culture grounded in novel forms of sensible expression. Thus, the fundamental thesis of this book is that Hegel and Hip Hop are mutually illuminating, and when considered in tandem each helps to clarify and reinforce the validity and power of the other.

Approaches to Global History - To See the World Whole (Hardcover): Felipe Fernandez-Armesto Approaches to Global History - To See the World Whole (Hardcover)
Felipe Fernandez-Armesto
R4,262 Discovery Miles 42 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume brings together 25 defining texts in global history. These pieces cover approaches to the subject from antiquity to the present century and, taken together, show the development of the discipline, providing a solid historiographical, theoretical and methodological overview that will be invaluable for students. The collection gives a unique sense of how, at different times, in different cultural circumstances, students of the past have approached the problems of encompassing the world in a single narrative or theory. This is a reader with an implicit story to unfold. Felipe Fernandez-Armesto tracks how a global understanding of history originated in prophetic writings, how the "Renaissance discovery of the world" multiplied the opportunities for historians to think about history globally, how scientific investigations of change came to exert influence and inspire new thinking among global historians, how "culture wars" ensued between advocates of scientific and cultural models and how changing contexts in the 20th century produced new thematic approaches to the world as a whole. Each part is introduced, setting it in context and explaining the impact of its subject matter on the discipline, as well as the relations between the texts and their place in the overall development of global history.

Into the Open - Reflections on Genius and Modernity (Hardcover, New): Benjamin Taylor Into the Open - Reflections on Genius and Modernity (Hardcover, New)
Benjamin Taylor
R3,059 Discovery Miles 30 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Into the Open" is a philosophical and literary inquiry into the deeper meanings of genius. What precisely do we mean when we describe someone this way? What legacy do we invoke when we apply this term?

To address this question, Benjamin Taylor here explores how three great minds--Walter Pater, Paul Valry, and Sigmund Freud--viewed a figure widely considered the first great modern genius, Leonardo da Vinci. For each of these great thinkers, Da Vinci is of central importance because for each the received idea of genius has ceased to be a romantic certitude or sacred truth and has become a problem.

Invoking Nietzsche's drastic critique of genius, Taylor assesses the less programmatic and more anxious cases of Pater, Valry, and Freud. Whereas Nietzsche sought for and found an escape from romantic humanism, Pater, Valry, and Freud cannot relinquish the idea of genius and serve as troubled witnesses to the dilemma posed by the notion of genius. A myth of genius has been our way of making good the losses romantic modernity entails, Taylor writes, A myth of genius has existed to affirm that, among human lives, some have sacramental shape; that, among human lives, some put into abeyance the equation between life and loss. Such is the post-theological, post-metaphysical role into which we have compelled our geniuses. They make for us one last claim on the sublime.

A shift away from the special pleading that has lately plagued literary studies, Taylor's unfazed humanism reasserts the timeless standards of substantiveness, clarity, and grace.

While Nietzschea (TM)s influence on philosophy, literature and art is beyond dispute, his influence on sociology is often called into question. A close textual analysis of Nietzschea (TM)s works and those of important sociologists a " Max and Alfred Weber, Ferdinand TAnnies, Rosa Mayreder a " provides the first comprehensive account of their study and use of Nietzschea (TM)s writings. Above all, Nietzschea (TM)s critique of modernity, morality and culture are shown to have had a decisive influence on the development of sociology and the work of its leading thinkers at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

Life Hereafter - The Rise and Decline of a Tradition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Paul Crittenden Life Hereafter - The Rise and Decline of a Tradition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Paul Crittenden
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, Paul Crittenden offers a critical guide to the problematic origins of biblical teaching about the afterlife and the way in which it was subsequently developed by Church authorities and theologians-Origen, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas in particular. In the post-Reformation era the focus falls on the challenges set by modern secularism. The tradition encompasses a body of interconnected themes: an apocalyptic war in which the Kingdom of God triumphs over Satan's powers of darkness; salvation in Christ; the immortality of the soul; and finally the resurrection of the dead and the last judgment, ratifying an afterlife of eternal bliss for the morally good and punishment in hell for wrongdoers. The critique questions these beliefs on evidential, ethical, and philosophical grounds. The argument overall is that what lies beyond death is beyond knowledge. The one fundamental truth that can be distilled from the once compelling body of Christian eschatological belief-for believers and unbelievers alike-is the importance of living ethically.

Very little has been written on the political implications of diverse accounts of "virtue, "vice," and "moral character," and even less has been offered on this subject from any identifiably leftist perspective. This book begins by demonstrating the plausibility of a "Marxist ethics" in general; the author then proceeds to work out an understanding of moral character itself and its role in living a "good life," based on a historical materialist philosophical anthropology. This leads to an analysis of which character traits should be considered virtues and vices, and what would count as a successful or unsuccessful moral education, within the context of contemporary North American society. The text concludes by focusing on the problems associated with identifying real-life, useful exemplifications of such virtuous and vicious character.

Alberto Voltolini
R3,113 Discovery Miles 31 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a detailed reassessment of the role and impact of analytic philosophy in the overall philosophical debate. It does so by focusing on several important turning points that have been particularly significant for analytic philosophy's overall history, such as Bertrand Russell's critique of Meinong, and the vindication of Heidegger's famous 'Nothing'- sentence. In particular, the book scrutinizes whether the theses written about such points have been convincingly argued for, or whether they have gained attraction as a type of rhetorical device. Due to its broad nature, this book is of interest to scholars interested in all aspects of philosophy, at both graduate level and above.

This Festschrift celebrates Teddy Seidenfeld and his seminal contributions to philosophy, statistics, probability, game theory and related areas. The 13 contributions in this volume, written by leading researchers in these fields, are supplemented by an interview with Teddy Seidenfeld that offers an abbreviated intellectual autobiography, touching on topics of timeless interest concerning truth and uncertainty. Indeed, as the eminent philosopher Isaac Levi writes in this volume: "In a world dominated by Alternative Facts and Fake News, it is hard to believe that many of us have spent our life's work, as has Teddy Seidenfeld, in discussing truth and uncertainty." The reader is invited to share this celebration of Teddy Seidenfeld's work uncovering truths about uncertainty and the penetrating insights they offer to our common pursuit of truth in the face of uncertainty.
