Socioeconomic Fragmentation and Exclusion in Greece under the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Dimitris Katsikas, Dimitri... Socioeconomic Fragmentation and Exclusion in Greece under the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Dimitris Katsikas, Dimitri Sotiropoulos, Maria Zafiropoulou
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume uses new empirical evidence and analytical ideas to study phenomena of fragmentation and exclusion threatening stability and cohesion in Greek society in the aftermath of the crisis. The contributors argue that processes of fragmentation and exclusion provoked by the crisis can be observed on both a material and an ideational level. On a material level, rising levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality have produced new social security "outsiders", while on an ideational level, a discursive-cultural shift is documented, which has led to new understandings and categorizations of new (and old) insiders and outsiders. Moreover, the volume attests to the aspirations, but also the limitations, of spontaneous civil society mobilization to address the social crisis. Finally, the volume offers a discussion of the political management of social fragmentation and exclusion in Greece both before and after the onset of the crisis. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of social policy and phenomena of poverty, social exclusion and economic inequality, civil society studies, and comparative political economy and politics.

In Search of New Social Democracy - Insights from the South - Implications for the North (Hardcover): Olle Toernquist In Search of New Social Democracy - Insights from the South - Implications for the North (Hardcover)
Olle Toernquist
R3,019 Discovery Miles 30 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why is the classical social democratic vision of development based on social justice by democratic means losing ground? Why was it so difficult to renew, even in the context of the third wave of democracy in the South? How does this matter in the North too, and how might it be reinvented? This accessible book brings to life major insights gained through written sources and interviews with a large range of activists and political protagonists in the southern cases of Indonesia, India, and the Philippines - but also in the northern social democratic stronghold of Sweden. By considering the experiences in view of the basics of Social Democracy and a broader comparative framework, Olle Toernquist arrives at globally relevant conclusions. Crucially, Toernquist also puts forward suggestions for how to achieve this reinvention social democracy. Through implementation of broad alliances in the Global South, supported by the Global North, for transformative rights and welfare reforms - universal, participatory and impartially implemented - precursors to social economic growth pacts can thus be effected.

Chris Clark, Janice McGhee
R2,758 Discovery Miles 27 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Handling personal and often sensitive information is central to daily practice in social and health services. However, the increasing emphasis on multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working required for effective, joined-up services presents new challenges and dilemmas in preserving citizens' rights to privacy. This book examines key philosophical, ethical, legal and professional practice issues in the area of privacy and confidentiality and explores their implications for policy and practice. Offering a range of analytical frameworks, the contributors, from different disciplines including law, philosophy, anthropology and the personal service professions, provide a synoptic multi-disciplinary view of this increasingly challenging area where technological development, civil liberties, surveillance, health and welfare become inexorably intertwined. The book will be of key interest to a wide range of professionals in the personal services, academics in related areas, students of the professions and their contributory disciplines.

Kirsty Liddiard, Sally Whitney-Mitchell, Katy Evans, Lucy Watts, Ruth Spurr, …
R1,704 Discovery Miles 17 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This co-authored text critically explores the key findings of the Living Life to the Fullest project - a project that has explored the lives, thoughts, hopes and aspirations of disabled young people living with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Written by disabled young people and academic researchers, the book articulates ethical co-production in social research. The prolific contemporary political and theoretical debates about life, death and the human in an age of global precarity and austerity are explored in this book. Chapters draw upon key themes and co-researchers' priorities for writing about their lives: for example, the politics and potentials of co-production as a research method/ology; animal and human relationships; aging, time; sexuality and body image; politics, activism and disability arts and culture; and fragility, and death and dying.

The Peter Townsend Reader (Hardcover): Alan Walker, David Gordon, Ruth Levitas The Peter Townsend Reader (Hardcover)
Alan Walker, David Gordon, Ruth Levitas
R2,999 Discovery Miles 29 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2008, sociologist Peter Townsend celebrated his 80th birthday. It has been 60 years since his first published work. The range of his work is exceptional, including research on the UK's inner city deprivation; older people contemplating retirement; exclusion on the basis of class, race, gender, age, and disability; individual versus state responsibility for health; the social purposes and viability of residential institutions and hospitals; child and extended family development; and persistent poverty. This reader is a collection of his most distinctive work. The Peter Townsend Reader looks at the changes in social policy that have taken place in the UK, as well as internationally, over the past six decades. Each section of the book is introduced by an editor who is acquainted with Peter Townsend's work. It provides insight into the development of one social scientist's entire intellectual approach, particularly in choosing to place social policy at the center of social theory. The b

Relational Vulnerability - Theory, Law and the Private Family (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Ellen Gordon-Bouvier Relational Vulnerability - Theory, Law and the Private Family (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Ellen Gordon-Bouvier
R2,662 Discovery Miles 26 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book breaks new theoretical ground by constructing a framework of 'relational vulnerability' through which it analyses the disadvantaged position of those who undertake unpaid caregiving, or 'dependency-work', in the context of the private family. Expanding on existing socio-legal scholarship on vulnerability and resilience, it charts how the state seeks to conceal the embodied and temporal reality of vulnerability and dependency within the private family, while promoting an artificial concept of autonomous personhood that exposes dependency-workers work to a range of harms. The book argues that the legal framework governing the married and unmarried family reinforces principles of individualism and rationality, while labelling dependency-work as a private, gendered, and sentimental endeavor, lacking value beyond the family. It also considers how the state can respond to relational vulnerability and foster resilience. It seeks to provide a more comprehensive understanding of resilience, theorising its normative goals and applying these to different hypothetical state responses.

Changing Adolescence - Social Trends and Mental Health (Hardcover, New): Ann Hagell Changing Adolescence - Social Trends and Mental Health (Hardcover, New)
Ann Hagell
R2,943 Discovery Miles 29 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The general well-being of British adolescents has been the topic of considerable debate in recent years, but too often this is based on myth rather than fact. Are today's young people more stressed, anxious, distressed or antisocial than they used to be? What does research evidence tell us about the adolescent experience today and how it has changed over time? And how do trends in adolescent well-being since the 1970s relate to changes in education, leisure, communities and family life in that time? This unique volume brings together the main findings from the Nuffield Foundation's Changing Adolescence Programme and explores how social change may affect young people's behaviour, mental health and transitions toward adulthood. As well as critiquing research evidence, which will be of interest to a wide academic audience, the book will inform the wider debate on this subject among policy makers and service providers, voluntary organisations and campaign groups.

New York's Newsboys - Charles Loring Brace and the Founding of the Children's Aid Society (Hardcover): Karen M Staller New York's Newsboys - Charles Loring Brace and the Founding of the Children's Aid Society (Hardcover)
Karen M Staller
R877 Discovery Miles 8 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

New York's Newsboys is a lively historical account of Charles Loring Brace's founding and development of the Children's Aid Society to combat a newly emerging social problem, youth homelessness, during the nineteenth century. Poor children slept on the docks, pilfered, and peddled cheap wares to survive, activities which frequently landed them in prison-like juvenile asylums. Brace offered a radical alternative, the Newsboys' Lodging House. From there he launched a network of additional programs, each respecting his clients' free will, contrasting with the policing interventions favored by other reformers. Over four decades Brace built a comprehensive child welfare agency which sought to alleviate suffering, prevent delinquency, and divert children from a life of poverty. Using primary documents and analysis of over 700 original CAS case records, New York's Newsboys offers a new way to look at the foundational roots of social work and child welfare in the United States. In this book, Karen Staller argues that the significance of this chapter in history to the profession, the city of New York, and the country has been under appreciated.

Health and Illness in a Changing Society (Paperback): Michael Bury Health and Illness in a Changing Society (Paperback)
Michael Bury
R1,580 Discovery Miles 15 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Health and illness are intensely personal matters. It seems self evident that health is a basic necessity of the 'good life', though it is often taken for granted. Illness, on the other hand challenges our sense of security and may introduce acute anxiety into our lives. Health and Illness in a Changing Society provides a lively and critical account of the impact of social change on the experience of health and illness. It also examines the different sociological perspectives that have been used to analyse health matters. While some of the ideas developed in the last twenty years remain relevant to social research in health today, many are in need of urgent revision.

Victims of Crime - Construction, Governance and Policy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Matthew Hall Victims of Crime - Construction, Governance and Policy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Matthew Hall
R4,036 Discovery Miles 40 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume critically engages with the development of official policy and reform in relation to the support of victims of crime both within and beyond the criminal justice system of England and Wales. Since the election of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition Government in May 2010 it is argued that victimization has increasingly taken on a greater cultural resonance both in England and Wales and in other industrialised countries. Images of terrorism, public debates around the handling of sexual victimisation by the courts, and the issue of child sexual exploitation have catapulted victim issues into the public consciousness like never before - generating a new form of what Hall terms 'victim capital'. As such, this book utilises a combination of cultural victimological analysis, governance theory and legal scholarship to address fundamental questions concerning the drivers and impact of victim policy in England and Wales in the 21st century. An engaging and original study, this book will be of particular interest to scholars of victimology and the criminal justice system, as well as activists and policy makers.

Care in Healthcare - Reflections on Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Franziska Krause, Joachim Boldt Care in Healthcare - Reflections on Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Franziska Krause, Joachim Boldt
R1,900 Discovery Miles 19 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book examines the concept of care and care practices in healthcare from the interdisciplinary perspectives of continental philosophy, care ethics, the social sciences, and anthropology. Areas addressed include dementia care, midwifery, diabetes care, psychiatry, and reproductive medicine. Special attention is paid to ambivalences and tensions within both the concept of care and care practices. Contributions in the first section of the book explore phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches to care and reveal historical precursors to care ethics. Empirical case studies and reflections on care in institutionalised and standardised settings form the second section of the book. The concluding chapter, jointly written by many of the contributors, points at recurring challenges of understanding and practicing care that open up the field for further research and discussion. This collection will be of great value to scholars and practitioners of medicine, ethics, philosophy, social science and history.

Evaluating Reforms of Local Public and Social Services in Europe - More Evidence for Better Results (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... Evaluating Reforms of Local Public and Social Services in Europe - More Evidence for Better Results (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Ivan Kopric, Hellmut Wollmann, Gerard Marcou
R4,697 Discovery Miles 46 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains the increasing demand for evaluation as a result of the increasing frequency of reforms to local services, influenced by the New Public Management doctrine, the severe austerity policy in many European countries, and the wish to increase quality and reduce costs of public services, especially at the local (sub-national) level. Positioned at the interface of local services and evaluation research, it will enable the utilization of evaluation-generated knowledge in evidence-based policy making by focusing on the lessons learned from evaluation of local service delivery. It encompasses local public and social services (including waste, water, public transport, healthcare, education and eldercare) and examines the hypothesis that there is a North-West-South-East divide in Europe in terms of the evaluation of local service reforms. Particular attention is devoted to the explanatory function of evaluation. Providing fresh insight into the functioning of local government machinery in contemporary Europe, this book will appeal in particular to practitioners and students of local government, public economy, public administration and policy.

Dennis A Ahlburg, Allen C. Kelley, Karen Oppenheim Mason
R4,210 Discovery Miles 42 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult. Throughout the chapters, the authors try to identify other relevant factors that influence the outcomes we discuss or that influence the impact of population growth on those outcomes.

The Body in Health and Social Care (Hardcover): Julia Twigg The Body in Health and Social Care (Hardcover)
Julia Twigg
R4,952 Discovery Miles 49 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The body is central to many professional and policy concerns. Twigg shows how constructions of the body affect how we see different social groups, and explores the significance of the body in the provision and delivery of care. Written in a lively and accessible style, the book offers fresh insights into classic areas of health, social care, and society.

The Changing Meanings of the Welfare State - Histories of a Key Concept in the Nordic Countries (Paperback): Nils Edling The Changing Meanings of the Welfare State - Histories of a Key Concept in the Nordic Countries (Paperback)
Nils Edling
R851 Discovery Miles 8 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In discussions of economics, governance, and society in the Nordic countries, "the welfare state" is a well-worn analytical concept. However, there has been much less scholarly energy devoted to historicizing this idea beyond its postwar emergence. In this volume, specialists from Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland chronicle the historical trajectory of "the welfare state," tracing the variable ways in which it has been interpreted, valued, and challenged over time. Each case study generates valuable historical insights into not only the history of Northern Europe, but also the welfare state itself as both a phenomenon and a concept.

Centering the Museum - Writings for the Post-Covid Age (Paperback): Elaine Heumann Gurian Centering the Museum - Writings for the Post-Covid Age (Paperback)
Elaine Heumann Gurian
R1,337 Discovery Miles 13 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

1. Drawing on Elaine Heumann Gurian's 50 years of experience in the museum field, this book identifies many small, subtle ways museums can become more welcoming to more - and to all. 2. The book will be an excellent companion volume to the author's 2005 title, Civilizing the Museum, and, as such, will be essential reading for anyone who enjoyed that earlier title. It will be especially interesting to academics and students engaged in the study of museums, as well as practitioners working around the world. 3. There are very few books that give a sense of what it is like to work in museums and to address the complex issues of ethical obligations and social responsibilities, while at the same time managing staff and stakeholders. There are no competing titles by anyone with Elaine's range and depth of experience.

Civil Society Revisited - Lessons from Poland (Paperback): Kerstin Jacobsson, Elzbieta Korolczuk Civil Society Revisited - Lessons from Poland (Paperback)
Kerstin Jacobsson, Elzbieta Korolczuk
R850 Discovery Miles 8 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In much social scientific literature, Polish civil society has been portrayed as weak and passive. This volume offers a much-needed corrective, challenging this characterization on both theoretical and empirical grounds and suggesting new ways of conceptualizing civil society to better account for events on the ground as well as global trends such as neoliberalism, migration, and the renewal of nationalist ideologies. Focusing on forms of collective action that researchers have tended to overlook, the studies gathered here show how public discourse legitimizes certain claims and political actions as "true" civil society, while others are too often dismissed. Taken together, they critique a model of civil society that is 'made from above'.

Using Survey Data to Study Disability - Results from the National Health Survey on Disability (Hardcover): Barbara Altman,... Using Survey Data to Study Disability - Results from the National Health Survey on Disability (Hardcover)
Barbara Altman, Sharon N Barnartt, Gerry E Hendershot, Sheryl Larson
R3,177 Discovery Miles 31 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 1994-95 Disability Supplement to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS-D) sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services provided a rich resource for the quantitative studies included in this volume. Nationally-epresentative surveys that focus on collecting more in depth information about persons with disabilities are rare, therefore these studies are unusual in the level of data they include and the important insights into disability issues that they provide. These come at a time when much more information about the experiences of disability is needed to inform policy and evaluate programmatic changes. The first paper of the volume discusses in detail the genesis and methodology of the NHIS-D. This volume contains a variety of different types of papers that add not only to our information about persons with disabilities, but also serve as a useful guide to using this extensive data set to address the numerous questions about this population. In the first section, two papers describing methodological issues in using the NHIS-D are described. This section includes a paper on response patterns and another on a strategy to overcome the problem of missing data. The next section contains three papers that use the NHIS-D to develop a variety of operational definitions of disability and then use those operational definitions to describe specific aspects of disability, including aging, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The third section uses the NHIS-D to identify limitations and barriers experienced by persons with disabilities. Included in this group of papers are topics addressing barriers to work , mobility limitations and health care services, and unmet needs for support services among children.
