Transportation Planning on Trial - The Clean Air Act and Travel Forecasting (Paperback): Mark E Garrett, Martin Wachs Transportation Planning on Trial - The Clean Air Act and Travel Forecasting (Paperback)
Mark E Garrett, Martin Wachs
R2,740 Discovery Miles 27 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Authors' ad copy***Use whenever possible*** The Clean Air Act of 1991 and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1994 require that metropolitan transportation planning agencies give high priority to the improvement of air quality. Under these laws, transportation planners must design regional highway and transit systems that contribute substantially to the attainment of federal air quality standards. This new requirement reveals important limitations to the standard methods by which transportation planners do their work. The mathematical models and statistical techniques used by transportation planners appear to be inadequate to enable them to analyze the air quality implications of alternative transportation plans. This was the situation when a group of environmental organizations brought suit in federal district court alleging that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in the San Francisco Bay area had violated requirements of these laws in its transportation planning and highway funding activities. This volume provides an account of the legal dispute that pitted environmentalists against regional transportation planners, and which demonstrated that regional transportation planning methods are in need of substantial improvement. This monograph should be of interest to urban planners, environmentalists, public policy analysts, and those who apply mathematical modeling and statistical analysis to questions of public policy. The authors--an attorney and a transportation planner who took part in the lawsuit--analyze the specific arguments made by both sides in this important legal action, and draw from the specific case broader conclusions about the role of technical analysis in public policy making. *************************************************************** Urban planning does not and cannot exist in isolation--there are a large number of external factors that impact on a planner's work including politics and the planning commission; environmental impact studies; and national, state, and local legislation. Focusing on the interrelations between federal legislation, the judicial process, and transportation planning, Transportation Planning on Trial examines the interaction between regional transportation planning and environmental, particularly air, quality. This unique volume is designed to help urban planners understand the legal restrictions and requirements that directly impact how they operate. It considers two recent federal legislation pieces--the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991--that mark the most important landmarks in a decade-long shift in emphasis in regional transportation planning. This groundbreaking volume will be vitally important to transportation planners, students of urban and transportation planning, transportation policymakers, environmentalists and environmental lawyers.

The Soviet Wood-Processing Industry - A linear programming analysis of the role of transportation costs in location and flow... The Soviet Wood-Processing Industry - A linear programming analysis of the role of transportation costs in location and flow patterns (Paperback)
Brenton Barr
R719 Discovery Miles 7 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Systematic study of the geography distribution of the wood-processing industry has received recent Soviet attention, yet the results have been disappointing. Soviet work has been descriptive and lacking in critical analysis of the location problem. In particular, there has been little, if any, attempt to assess the geographic distribution of the industry within the general context of location theory and to evaluate the role played by individual location factors. This monograph is a case study in the application of linear programming techniques to the analysis of transportation patterns within the wood-processing industry. It will add to North American studies not only a knowledge of the location of wood-processing industries but also a better understanding of the factors which have influenced the location of wood-processing in the Soviet Union. Michael H.C. Baker
R251 Discovery Miles 2 510 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

London Transport was created in 1933 to coordinate the shambolic, overlapping transport systems of the capital, and for decades has striven to meet the challenges of organising London travel. Now operating as Transport for London (TfL), it continues this demanding work. In this fully illustrated volume, Michael H. C. Baker presents the complete story of the organisation from its origins, through the upheavals of the Second World War, to TfL's biggest modern project - Crossrail. Covering modes of transport including trams, trolleybuses, the iconic RT and Routemaster buses and the trains of the Underground, this is an essential guide to London's world-famous transport operator.

Icons and Idiots - Straight Talk on Leadership (Paperback): Bob Lutz Icons and Idiots - Straight Talk on Leadership (Paperback)
Bob Lutz
R538 Discovery Miles 5 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Bob Lutz retired from General Motors in 2010, after an unparalleled forty-seven-year career in the auto industry, he was one of the most respected leaders in American business. He had survived all kinds of managers over those decades: tough and timid, analytical and irrational, charismatic and antisocial, and some who seemed to shift frequently among all those traits. His experiences made him an expert on leadership, every bit as much as he was an expert on cars and trucks.
Now Lutz is revealing the leaders--good, bad, and ugly--who made the strongest impression on him throughout his career. "Icons and Idiots" is a collection of shocking and often hilarious true stories and the lessons Lutz drew from them. From enduring the sadism of a Marine Corps drill instructor, to working with a washed-up alcoholic, to taking over the reins from a convicted felon, he reflects on the complexities of all-too-human leaders. No textbook or business school course can fully capture their idiosyncrasies, foibles and weaknesses - which can make or break companies in the real world.
Lutz shows that we can learn just as much from the most stubborn, stupid, and corrupt leaders as we can from the inspiring geniuses. He offers fascinating profiles of icons and idiots such as... Eberhard von Kuenheim. The famed CEO of BMW was an aristocrat-cum-street fighter who ruled with secrecy, fear, and deft maneuvering.Harold A. "Red" Poling A Ford CEO and the ultimate bean counter. If it couldn't be quantified, he didn't want to know about it.Lee Iacocca The legendary Chrysler CEO appeared to be brillant and bold, but was often vulnerable and insecure behind the scenes.G. Richard "Rick" Wagoner The perfect peacetime CEO whose superior intelligence couldn't save GM from steep decline and a government bailout. As Lutz writes:
"We'll examine bosses who were profane, insensitive, totally politically incorrect, and who "appropriated" insignificant items from hotels or the company. We'll visit the mind of a leader who did little but sit in his office. We'll look at another boss who could analyze a highly complex profit-and-loss statement or a balance sheet at a glance, yet who, at times, failed to grasp the simplest financial mechanisms--how things actually worked in practice to "create" the numbers in the real world."
The result is a powerful and entertaining guide for any aspiring leader.

Diffusion of Renewable Energy Technologies - Private Sector Perspectives on Emerging Markets (Hardcover, New edition):... Diffusion of Renewable Energy Technologies - Private Sector Perspectives on Emerging Markets (Hardcover, New edition)
Christian Friebe
R853 R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Save R90 (11%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

By analysing the context of emerging and developing countries, the author explores the private sector perspective on renewable energy diffusion. The evaluation of two technology case studies, namely wind farms (grid-connected renewable energy) and solar home systems (off-grid renewable energy), reveals the perspectives of highly experienced early adopters. Thereby, qualitative and quantitative data sources - including innovative methods such as conjoint analysis - are combined. A key finding is that private sector perspectives, especially of early adopters, are highly relevant for policy makers in their endeavour of designing effective and efficient framework conditions for renewable energy technologies.

Routes, Roads and Landscapes (Hardcover, New Ed): Mari Hvattum Routes, Roads and Landscapes (Hardcover, New Ed)
Mari Hvattum; Brita Brenna, Janike Kampevold Larsen
R4,665 Discovery Miles 46 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Routes and roads make their way into and across the landscape, defining it as landscape and making it accessible for many kinds of uses and perceptions. Bringing together outstanding scholars from cultural history, geography, philosophy, and a host of other disciplines, this collection examines the complex entanglement between routes and landscapes. It traces the changing conceptions of the landscape from the Enlightenment to the present day, looking at how movement has been facilitated, imagined and represented and how such movement, in turn, has conditioned understandings of the landscape. A particular focus is on the modern transportation landscape as it came into being with the canal, the railway, and the automobile. These modes of transport have had a profound impact on the perception and conceptualization of the modern landscape, a relationship investigated in detail by authors such as Gernot BAhme, Sarah Bonnemaison, Tim Cresswell, Finola O'Kane, Charlotte Klonk, Peter Merriman, Christine Macy, David Nye, Vittoria Di Palma, Charles Withers, and Thomas Zeller.

Transport Lessons from the Fuel Tax Protests of 2000 (Hardcover, New edition): Glenn Lyons Transport Lessons from the Fuel Tax Protests of 2000 (Hardcover, New edition)
Glenn Lyons; Kiron Chatterjee
R4,482 Discovery Miles 44 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The UK fuel tax protests of September 2000 generated considerable debate about fuel prices and taxation and put transport in the media spotlight. Away from the immediate events and debates surrounding the protests, the experience offered the opportunity for longer-term lessons on transport to be gained. The editors of this volume, Glenn Lyons and Kiron Chatterjee, saw the opportunity to get fresh insight into car dependence and conducted a large-scale travel behaviour survey to find out how car users coped when restricted in being able to buy petrol. This book presents their findings and collects together articles written by other researchers on a range of topics including fuel taxation, transport pricing, policy acceptability, travel behaviour and goods distribution.

In Transit - Transport Workers Union In Nyc 1933-66 (Paperback, New Ed): Joshua Freeman In Transit - Transport Workers Union In Nyc 1933-66 (Paperback, New Ed)
Joshua Freeman
R891 R846 Discovery Miles 8 460 Save R45 (5%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This history of New York transit workers from the Great Depression to the monumental 1966 transit strike shows how, through collective action, the men and women who operated the world's largest transit system brought about a virtual revolution in their daily lives. Joshua Freeman's detailed descriptions of both transit work and transit workers, and his full account of the formation and development of the Transport Workers Union provide new insight into the nature of modern industrial unionism. Freeman pays particular attention to the role of Communists and veterans of the Irish Republican Army -- including TWU president Michael J. Quill -- in organizing and leading the union, as well as to the Catholic labor activists who were the principal union dissidents. Freeman also explores the intense political struggles over the New York transit system. He links the TWU's pioneering role in public sector unionism to worker militancy and the union's deep involvement in New York politics. His portrait of Fiorello La Guardia's determined opposition to the TWU belies La Guardia's pro-labor reputation. By combining social and political history with the study of collective bargaining, In Transit makes a major contribution to the history of American labor, radicalism, and urban politics. Now with a new epilogue that frames the history of the union in the context of labor's revival and recent changes in TWU's leadership, In Transit is an intimate portrait of the politics of mass transit and public sector unionism, and one of the most detailed reconstructions to date of the social processes of industrial unionism. This book will appeal to anyone interested in New York City's subways, politics, history, and labor.

Urban Goods Movement - A Guide to Policy and Planning (Hardcover, New Ed): K Ogden Urban Goods Movement - A Guide to Policy and Planning (Hardcover, New Ed)
K Ogden
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Freight transport is essential to modern urban civilization. No urban area could exist without a reliable freight transport system. Although the private sector is responsible for much of this system, the public sector has a vital role to play in the provision of infrastructure and the establishment of a social and legal framework within which transport can occur. For these reasons, goods movement deserves and is increasingly receiving, explicit consideration in urban transport policy and planning. Many cities around the world have conducted studies aimed at resolving urban goods movement problems and a considerable, if disparate, body of research results are available. This book brings together much of this knowledge and experience in a comprehensive source of information on urban freight, particularly from a public policy or planning viewpoint. It provides both a conceptual basis for urban goods movement analysis and detailed, practical guidelines which may be used directly by those responsible for urban freight policy and planning. The author has worked for over twenty years in this field and he draws upon his experience in Australia, the United States, Great Britain, Canada and The Philippines to produce a book which is international in scope and perspective. The book is written for practising professionals, such as engineers, economists and planners, working in local government, urban transport planning agencies, highway authorities, consultancies, or research institutes; it is also relevant to graduate courses in transport planning, traffic engineering or urban policy. It is of interest to all who have a concern for contemporary issues in urban development.

Planning for Public Transport Accessibility - An International Sourcebook (Hardcover, New Ed): Carey Curtis, Jan Scheurer Planning for Public Transport Accessibility - An International Sourcebook (Hardcover, New Ed)
Carey Curtis, Jan Scheurer
R4,679 Discovery Miles 46 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Bringing together a comparative analysis of the accessibility by public transport of 23 cities spanning four continents, this book provides a "hands-on" introduction to the evolution, rationale and effectiveness of a new generation of accessibility planning tools that have emerged since the mid-2000s. The Spatial Network Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems (SNAMUTS) tool is used as a practical example to demonstrate how city planners can find answers as they seek to improve public transport accessibility. Uniquely among the new generation of accessibility tools, SNAMUTS has been designed for multi-city comparisons. A range of indicators are employed in each city including: the effectiveness of the public transport network; the relationship between the transport network and land use activity; who gets access within the city; and how resilient the city will be. The cities selected enable a comparison between cities by old world-new world; public transport modes; governance approach; urban development constraints. The book is arranged along six themes that address the different planning challenges cities confront. Richly illustrated with maps and diagrams, this volume acts as a comprehensive sourcebook of accessibility indicators and a snapshot of current policy making around the world in the realm of strategic planning for land use transport integration and the growth of public transport. It provides a deeper understanding of the complexity, opportunities and challenges of twenty-first-century accessibility planning.

Fuelled by Belief - The Cityjet Story (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Pat Byrne Fuelled by Belief - The Cityjet Story (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Pat Byrne
R1,274 Discovery Miles 12 740 Out of stock

Written by the company's founder and first CEO Pat Byrne, he tells the remarkable story of how a fledgling airline, against all odds, literally stayed in the air. Set up in 1993 to fly business travellers to London City Airport and back from Dublin. Cityjet was highly regarded and developed a loyal customer base, but was continually struggling to compete in a very difficult market. A deal with Richard Branson and Virgin Airlines seemed to be the answer, but the deal eventually went sour and by 1997 Cityjet had accumulated losses of 16.5 million. The company went into examinership, emerged again with new investors, but the financial woes continued. Thanks to committed management and a hard-working staff Cityjet somehow managed to stay in business but time was against them. Eventually, seven years after it was founded. Cityjet became a wholly owned subsidiary of Air France and Pat Byrne's dream of running his own airline was over. As he says. "The difference between success and failure in a tough business like airlines is minimal. In virtually every case failure means the airline closes down. We didn't let that happen."
