National Infrastructure Bank - Concept & Proposals (Hardcover): Jonathan M Moore, Thomas J. Lee National Infrastructure Bank - Concept & Proposals (Hardcover)
Jonathan M Moore, Thomas J. Lee
R2,837 Discovery Miles 28 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The central policy objective of a national infrastructure bank is to increase investment in infrastructure. Greater investment is desired because high-quality, well maintained infrastructure is believed to increase private-sector productivity and improve public health and welfare. The magnitude of the increased productivity, however, is not settled, as empirical analysis does not always support the conjecture that greater infrastructure investment uniformly generates productivity gains. The type of infrastructure and the type of investment are critical elements in such an assessment. This book provides an overview of the infrastructure bank concept and some examples of existing infrastructure financing mechanisms. Discussed also are select legislative proposals for infrastructure banks, and the federal role in financing these proposals.

A comprehensive modern guide to urban transportation

The founding, shaping, and growth of human communities throughout history have been products of complex interactions of many forces. One major force has always been transportation. Transportation has played a key role in determining the location of cities; their size; their form; and their structure. Today, the United States has a population of 300 million people driving 136 million cars and served by over 6,000 public transit agencies. With such daunting statistics, the challenge to the transportation professional is significant indeed.

In "Urban Transit: Systems and Technology," Vukan Vuchic has assembled the guide to urban transportation that the industry needs. Broad in scope and deeplyresearched, this book covers the entire field of transit in all its modes and aspects. Vuchic begins with an overview of the history of transit and its role in urban development, illuminating how transportation both responded to the needs of communities and, in turn, helped shape them.

Defining relevant terms and concepts, the text then examines: Urban transit modes--highway, rail, automated, specialized, paratransit, and unconventional concepts--and the most efficient systems designs for each System components, vehicles, travel ways, terminals, and control systems Vehicle propulsion (diesel, electric, and others), fully supported with equations and analytical methods for vehicle dynamic performance and travel times

Bringing every aspect of urban transport between two covers, "Urban Transit: Systems and Technology" is a primary resource for professionals and students who are designing and operating these key components of urban infrastructure.

Transit System Resilience - Development Efforts & Challenges (Paperback): Kayla Hodges Transit System Resilience - Development Efforts & Challenges (Paperback)
Kayla Hodges
R2,098 Discovery Miles 20 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Public transit systems, which receive funding from the federal government, are vulnerable to catastrophic events, as demonstrated by the impact Hurricane Sandy and other events have had on transit systems. These events highlight our reliance on transit systems for access to jobs, medical care, and other services, as well as the cost of recovering from these events. Building resilience -- the ability to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the risk of catastrophic events -- is one strategy to help limit the nation's fiscal exposure to catastrophic events. This book examines how DHS and DOT help transit agencies make their systems resilient; actions selected transit agencies take to make their systems resilient; and challenges transit agencies face with making their systems resilient. It also addresses the progress the Department of Transportation has made allocating, obligating, and disbursing the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act surface transportation funds; how the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) new Public Transportation Emergency Relief program compares to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) and Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) emergency relief programs; and the extent to which FTA and FEMA have implemented their memorandum of agreement to co-ordinate their roles and responsibilities when providing assistance to transit agencies.

Tourism and Transport - Modes, Networks and Flows (Paperback): David Timothy Duval Tourism and Transport - Modes, Networks and Flows (Paperback)
David Timothy Duval
R846 Discovery Miles 8 460 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The global growth of tourism has been matched by the significant growth in transport networks. In many ways, transport and tourism can be considered mutually dependent. Understanding the dimensions of tourism requires an understanding of how transport is governed, regulated and operated and how it subsequently facilitates tourism development. This book provides an overview of the relationships between various modes and types of transport and tourism. It views transport through various lenses, including inter-governmental regulations, national government regulation, the scope of transport networks and how this influences the shape of tourism, and the marketing and management of transport operations. The book ends with some considerations for the future of transport and tourism, including the management of environmental consequences and new forms of tourism-related transport.

Marcus Enoch, Peter Nijkamp, Stephen Potter, Barry Ubbels
R4,465 Discovery Miles 44 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transport policy is an increasingly difficult area for all national governments and regional/local authorities. Tackling car use and realizing a sustainable transport system appears to be very difficult. Developing public transport is seen as an increasingly important element in improving the transport system, especially in densely populated areas. At the same time however, governments are under increasing pressure to cut taxation. As a result there is a growing gap between increasing policy need for public transport and government resources to fund that need. This timely book explores one solution to this dilemma, which is the use of local charges and taxes dedicated to support public transport. Unfare Solutions examines how and why such charges have evolved and how they do (or do not) relate to modern transport policy developments and theory. It shows innovative funding techniques developed by both public transport providers and federal and local authorities. The authors are very experienced in the field of mobility and public transport. They have conducted many researches in this field (including a major CEC research project towards the use of charges and taxes for public transport) and written several books and publications about the economics of transport in a sustainable context.

Civilian Specialists at War - Britain's Transport Experts and the First World War (Hardcover): Christopher Phillips Civilian Specialists at War - Britain's Transport Experts and the First World War (Hardcover)
Christopher Phillips
R2,387 Discovery Miles 23 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The war of 1914-1918 was the first great general conflict to be fought between highly industrial societies able to manufacture and transport immense quantities of goods over land and sea. Yet the armies of the First World War were too vast in scale, their movements too complex, and the infrastructure upon which they depended too specialised to be operated by professional soldiers alone. In Civilian Expertise at War, Christopher Phillips examines the relationship between industrial society and industrial warfare through the lens of Britain's transport experts. He analyses the multiple connections between the army, the government, and the senior executives of some of pre-war Britain's largest industrial enterprises to illustrate the British army's evolving understanding both of industrial warfare's particular character and of the role to be played by non-military experts in the prosecution of such a conflict. This book reveals that Britain's transport experts were a key component of Britain's conduct of the First World War. It demonstrates that a pre-existing professional relationship between the army, government, and private enterprise existed before 1914, and that these bonds were strengthened by the outbreak of war. It charts the range of wartime roles into which Britain's transport experts were thrust in the opening years of the conflict, as both military and political leaders grasped with the challenges before them. It details the application of recognisably civilian technologies and methods to the prosecution of war and documents how - in the conflict's principal theatre, the western front - the freedom of action for Britain's transport experts was constrained by the political and military requirements of coalition warfare. Christopher Phillips is a lecturer in international security in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University.
