Over the last century the ECG has been used by clinicians to make major clinical decisions with regard to electric pacing, the use of thrombolytic drugs in acute myocardial infarction and the timing of surgery. In conjunction with a chest X-ray and the echocardiogram it is a fundamental part of the initial investigation of a patient with suspected heart disease. These electrical squiggles have always been difficult for students to understand. In part the problem has been that the formatting of the ECG has only become standard in the last two decades. Some important books have not provided the full twelve-lead ECG. On occasion the interpretation of the ECG has been related to complex explanations of the shapes of the electrical signals. For the practising physician much of the interpretation is a matter of pattern recognition.

The text is structured to present a logical approach to formulating a pathologic diagnosis from the diverse array of tissue received in the surgical pathology laboratory with an emphasis on differential diagnosis. More than 220 illustrations complement the text, with 70 of them in full color throughout. Each chapter includes a section on Clinical Queries and Reporting that summarizes the features that must be discussed in the final pathology report. The authors are two prominent gynecologic pathologists, and this book is derived from their long-running Short Course presented at the International Academy of Pathology. From rave reviews of the first edition: This delightsful and well written monograph stresses the practical aspects and common problems in endo

This volume provides a practical yet comprehensive guide to manage the shift in the diagnosis of lung cancer from large resections to small samples, including cytology specimens and core biopsies. Specifically, it outlines various available minimally-invasive modalities and presents algorithms to optimize and maximize sample collection and processing beginning at the time of tissue acquisition during the procedure. Secondly, the book provides an overview of the various existing and emerging lung cancer therapies and why a specific diagnosis is crucial. Key elements for the classification of small biopsies and cytology proposed by the ATS, IASLC, and ERS are highlighted. A section dedicated to immunohistochemistry offers a logical, step-by-step guide to sub-classify lung cancers and to differentiate them from metastases. The text also provides a review of the various molecular tests (and alternatives in cases of scant tissue) required for lung adenocarcinomas. Finally, potential pitfalls to avoid during acquisition, processing, and classification are discussed. With contributions from a team of multidisciplinary authors who are regularly involved in the care of lung cancer patients , Diagnosing Non-small Cell Carcinoma in Small Biopsy and Cytology is an invaluable reference guide for pathologists, pathologists-in-training, and allied professionals, including oncologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

The announcement of a serious diagnosis is a solemn moment when directions shift, priorities change, and life appears in sharper focus. It is also a moment when a story takes shape. It is a story we are able to imagine, even if we haven't experienced it firsthand, because the moment of diagnosis is as pervasive in popular media as it is in medicine. Diagnosis: Truths and Tales shares stories told from the perspectives of those who receive diagnoses and those who deliver them. Confronting how we address illness in our personal lives and in popular culture, this compelling book explores narratives of diagnosis while pondering the impact they have on how we experience health and disease.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) records and measures electrical activity in the brain and is used to help diagnose seizure disorders, screen for delirium and dementia, evaluate head injuries, and examine brain activity in comatose individuals. While the introduction of digital EEGs carries the promise of better accuracy, it requires that physicians and technologists be specially trained.

This sophisticated and practical collection of teaching tools uses digital EEGs -- to be read as they would be in practice -- to provide a comprehensive introduction to all EEGs and to ease the transition from the paper to the digital format for neurologists and technologists. It incorporates multimedia presentation and interactive digital EEG and video to help physicians and technicians recognize common normal and abnormal EEG patterns represented in a digital format. The atlas presents EEG patterns in a logical sequence, beginning with normal adult and pediatric patterns, working through variants and abnormalities, and concluding with abnormal neonatal patterns.

This book is accompanied by an EEG reading system on DVD that allows the reader to review "live" EEG, facilitating training on formatting EEG for review and rapidly cross-linking between similar and related EEG patterns. In addition, the atlas contains a primer on reading EEG, a software tutorial on how to read digital EEG, an EEG self-test, a collection of MRI images showing positions of standard EEG electrodes over the brain, and video examples of common types of seizures.
