Social Work Practice in Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care - Challenges and Opportunities (Hardcover): Barbara Jones Social Work Practice in Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care - Challenges and Opportunities (Hardcover)
Barbara Jones
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As an essential and emerging practice, Pediatric palliative care seeks to prevent and relieve suffering for children with life-threatening conditions. Palliative care teams are composed of providers of various disciplines, including social workers, who collaborate to address the medical, social-emotional, and spiritual needs of the child, and their families. Social workers are especially accustomed to interdisciplinary care and may counsel, provide resources, facilitate communication, and promote person- and family-centered practices that are the basis of effective pediatric palliative care. This book presents practice strategies, experiential knowledge, and research related to practicing in collaborative teams, ICU settings, and hospice. It also presents research that is informed by the perceptions and perspectives of bereaved parents, parents who have suffered a stillbirth, and parent caregivers of children with life-limiting illness. This book highlights the unique role social workers play, within care teams and in relationship with children who have life-limiting illness, and their families. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Social Work in End-of-Life & Palliative Care.

Individual Paediatrics - Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Aspects of Diagnosis and Counseling -- Anthroposophic-homeopathic... Individual Paediatrics - Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Aspects of Diagnosis and Counseling -- Anthroposophic-homeopathic Therapy, Fourth Edition (Hardcover, 4th edition)
Georg Soldner, Herrmann Michael Stellman
R4,595 Discovery Miles 45 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the medical treatment of children and teenagers and the accompaniment of their parents, alternative therapies, homoeopathy, anthroposophic medicine, psychology and psychosomatics play an ever greater role alongside conventional, science-based medicine. Before a therapy can be successful, an individual diagnosis must be made, taking somatic symptoms, mental and emotional aspects and the developmental stage of the child into account. The background and context of the illness must be determined as well: Why has this child developed this particular disease at this particular moment? In this way your therapy can activate the child s own disease-fighting resources and support it in developing its potential.

Ten years after the first edition, Individual Pediatrics has been completely revised for its fourth edition. Current developments in the field of epigenetics, questions about vaccination, sun protection, and vitamin D are covered, as are newly developed and refined treatment concepts for disorders such as inadequate ventilation of the middle ear, bronchial asthma, neurodermatitis, and ADHS. New case reports have been added, and all drug data have been updated."

Safe and Effective Exercise for Overweight Youth (Hardcover): Melinda S. Sothern Safe and Effective Exercise for Overweight Youth (Hardcover)
Melinda S. Sothern
R5,494 Discovery Miles 54 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on decades of scientific research and clinical experience, Safe and Effective Exercise for Overweight Youth provides a scientifically supported and clinically relevant source of information that clinical health care providers, educators, public health, and fitness professionals may use to promote physical activity in overweight and obese youth of all ages, including those with significant obesity and chronic health conditions, such as hypertension, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. It presents a best practices model for implementing clinical- and recreational-based physical activity interventions. The first five chapters offer an overview of the existing scientific literature supporting individualized, tailored exercise prescriptions for overweight and obese children with and without comorbidities. They also contain exercise instructions, illustrations, and sample lesson plans to improve cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength, power and endurance, and muscular flexibility. This information provides the basis for the recommendations provided in the subsequent chapters, which include specific guidelines for prescribing exercise to overweight children along with verbal cues or "talking points," clinical reminders, and handouts to assist health care providers. The text provides a 40-week exercise curriculum with lesson plans, discusses the importance of regular medical and self-monitoring, and offers easy tools and techniques for health care providers to track a child's progress. Chapters also supply detailed clinical and field protocols to aid in measuring health and fitness outcomes, describe realistic expectations, and present the U.S. recommendations for promoting physical activity and fitness in youth. The final chapter summarizes current studies to support future research on physical activity for the prevention and management of pediatric obesity.

It's Not Just Growing Pains - A guide to childhood muscle, bone and joint pain, rheumatic diseases and the latest... It's Not Just Growing Pains - A guide to childhood muscle, bone and joint pain, rheumatic diseases and the latest treatments (Hardcover)
Thomas J. A Lehman
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arthritis is usually considered a disease of older adults, but nearly 300,000 children in the United States suffer from some form of arthritis or rheumatic disease, such as juvenile arthritis (JRA), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, or Kawasaki disease. Yet until now very little information has been available to guide parents and doctors in properly diagnosing such children.
Here is a readable, reliable guide to the common causes of bone, joint, muscle, and arthritis pain in children, designed to help parents and physicians understand these disorders, arrive at the proper diagnosis, and choose the most effective treatment. In this comprehensive resource, Dr. Thomas Lehman--the head of one of the most prestigious pediatric rheumatology programs in the world--offers easy-to-understand information on the causes, symptoms, tests, and treatments for a wide variety of rheumatic diseases and childhood pain.
Dr. Lehman writes with great clarity, providing numerous case examples that illustrate the topic at hand and offering practical, down-to-earth advice. Equally important, he answers the questions that parents are most likely to ask: What should they observe in their children? What questions should they ask their doctor? Which tests are necessary? What risk factors should they be aware of? And how can they help their children cope with the social and psychological aspects of their illness. The book summarizes diagnostic tests, discusses the most effective medications, and discusses physical therapy, alternative therapy, and surgical options that are available.
Clearly written, thorough, authoritative, and up-to-date, It's Not Just Growing Pains is the definitive resource available on the subject for parents and health care professionals, helping them to understand the children's pain and find the best available care.

Perinatal Growth and Nutrition (Hardcover): Ian J. Griffin Perinatal Growth and Nutrition (Hardcover)
Ian J. Griffin
R5,630 Discovery Miles 56 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Preterm infants grow poorly after birth and very commonly develop ex utero growth restriction (EUGR). However, the risks and benefits of catch-up growth in preterm infants must be weighed, and evidence addressing this warrants examination. Perinatal Growth and Nutrition explores the reasons for EUGR and the long-term effects on developmental outcome and on metabolic risks. It provides clear information on the risks and benefits of faster post-natal growth and catch-up growth in preterm infants and offers tools for better assessment of growth and earlier identification of faltering growth. This book is divided into three sections. The first section covers advances in preterm infant growth standards, diagnosis and causes of EUGR, and assessments of preterm infant diets. The second section considers the extensive human literature on the effects of in utero and ex utero growth restriction and catch-up growth on long-term metabolic outcomes-such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiac disease-and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes including cognition. It also examines evidence for the effect of growth on these outcomes in term and preterm infants. The final section of the book considers ways to reduce the incidence of EUGR in preterm infants and when EUGR does occur, to optimize catch-up growth. Topics include assessment of dietary requirements of the diverse population of preterm infants, examination of tools for prescribing nutrition to neonatal intensive care unit patients, consideration of whether to customize or generalize nutrient intake, and fortification of human milk. In addition, the last chapter proposes using a Z-score growth chart for improved interpretation of growth data.

Pioneers of Child Psychoanalysis - Influential Theories and Practices in Healthy Child Development (Paperback): Beatriz Markman... Pioneers of Child Psychoanalysis - Influential Theories and Practices in Healthy Child Development (Paperback)
Beatriz Markman Reubins; Edited by Marc Stephan Reubins
R1,185 Discovery Miles 11 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In "Pioneers of Child Psychoanalysis," Markman Reubins presents the lives and theories of the early innovators of psychoanalytic theory as it is applied to child development. The creative thinking she shows lies in her unique weaving of personal history and theoretical application. This insightful elaboration of the thoughts of influential thinkers flows seamlessly from the early twentieth century to the present time. The unique approach of preceding theory with the personal history of the analytic thinkers amplifies and gives texture to the unfolding of their understanding of psychological development and its analytic implications for child development. She describes difficult concepts with a balanced and thoughtful approach, which sheds light and understanding for both the student and experienced clinician. By comparing and contrasting these theoretical approaches, the author suggests their interrelationships and how, rather than opposing each other, they augment one another and help the reader to understand the broad depth of analytic insight which flowed from the enormous creativity of the analysts from the twentieth century. While this is a "must read" for students of child psychoanalysis, it is also enormously beneficial for parents who want to understand the fundamentals of best parenting practices.

Psychotic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents - Assessment, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment (Paperback): Claudio Cepeda Psychotic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents - Assessment, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment (Paperback)
Claudio Cepeda
R1,772 Discovery Miles 17 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Psychotic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents demystifies the interviewing diagnostic process of psychosis in children and adolescents and provides a valuable resource for treatment. Psychotic symptoms have traditionally been rationalized and disregarded as products of the child's imagination. There has been a professional reluctance to acknowledge that children could suffer from severe psychotic disorders akin to adult subjects, and that these symptoms merit a comprehensive and systematic evaluation. This book offers a useful guide to the interviewing process, a review of differential diagnosis, and an overview on psychosocial interventions. It deals also with the use of antipsychotic drugs, beginning with issues related to their use in the field, followed by a review of literature on the subject, atypical side effects, and implementation throughout treatment. The book fills a vacuum in the field of child and adolescent psychosis, and will have a broad appeal and interest to general psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, to child and adolescent psychiatrists, and many other mental health professionals working with disturbed children and adolescents.

Bilingualism and Language Disability (PLE: Psycholinguistics) - Assessment and Remediation (Hardcover): Nick Miller Bilingualism and Language Disability (PLE: Psycholinguistics) - Assessment and Remediation (Hardcover)
Nick Miller
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Society is becoming increasingly multi-lingual and this presents monolingual professionals, particularly those in special education and speech pathology, with severe problems. Is the language delay in a child from a bilingual environment a result of this background or is there a specific speech problem? Is a child's poor performance in school due to his problems of coping with two languages, or does he need remedial teaching? Originally published in 1984, this book is not concerned with second language learning, but with speech and learning difficulties in bilingual children as they are presented to remedial teachers, psychologists and speech therapists. To this end the first group of specially written articles deals with the patterns of language usage in bilingual communities and the social and psychological factors which shape these patterns; with processes in normal bilingual language acquisition; and with the relationship between cognitive development and growing up with two languages. Management issues and methods involved in helping children with language problems are also tackled: they include taking case histories, family liaison, counselling, bilingual programmes, mother tongue teaching, curriculum development and the training of personnel to work in the bilingual-bicultural field. This book provided a great deal of practical help, in a field that was relatively new at the time of writing, and helped to enlighten readers on the issues involved and assist in crystalising thought and directing future research.

Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis - Through counter-transference to case management (Hardcover): Adrian Sutton Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis - Through counter-transference to case management (Hardcover)
Adrian Sutton
R4,503 Discovery Miles 45 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do children and parents shape clinical practice? How can clinicians learn from the impact of their patients upon them? How do we recognise if health care practices are adversely affecting health care? Children's health problems can place enormous strain on both children and their families. Whether symptoms are acute or chronic, assessment and treatment can be confusing and frightening even when the illness itself is not dangerous. Understanding the impact of illness on emotions, relationships and development is an essential part of providing good health care services. For health care professionals it is necessary to understand how their clinical practice affects their patients and how this reciprocal relationship shapes good or bad practice. Introducing key psychoanalytic concepts Adrian Sutton illustrates through detailed clinical studies how psychoanalytic theory can be applied in a health care setting involving children and their families. Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis specifically describes the impact of the patient on the professional, how conscious and unconscious elements need to be taken into account, and to what extent these can influence practice enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic treatment. Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis is an exploration of the central importance of the patient-doctor relationship and how the psychodynamics of this relationship are crucial in providing information that can aid treatment. It will be of interest to child mental health professionals - psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, paediatric practitioners and those working in social welfare and educational settings.

Childhood Depression - A Place for Psychotherapy (Paperback): Gillian Miles Childhood Depression - A Place for Psychotherapy (Paperback)
Gillian Miles; Edited by Judith Trowell
R1,219 Discovery Miles 12 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title is based on the results of a project based at the Tavistock Clinic in London which set out to explore whether children and young people aged nine years to fifteen years suffering from depression could be helped using brief focused psychodynamic psychotherapy together with parent work and family therapy. There were also centres in Athens, Greece and Helsinki, Finland, and in this way the clinicians had sufficient subjects from which to compare the interventions and check for any possible cultural differences in the results. Most of the children and young people studied showed a noticeable improvement. The book contains chapters by the clinicians involved describing their work as well as a section containing the scientific papers that emerged from the project. It is hoped that this may encourage the use of similar approaches to working in the field, especially in these days when there is such a demand for psychological therapies.
