This comprehensive book is written to inform and improve outcomes of patients in need of blood management during surgical procedures. Information is presented in an accessible format, allowing for immediate use in clinical practice. Beginning with an overview of the history of blood transfusions, early chapters present the foundational information needed to comprehend information in later chapters. Nuanced procedures, drugs, and techniques are covered, including new biologicals to assist clotting and blood substitutes. Further discussions focus on potential complications seen in blood transfusions, such as diseases of the coagulation system, pathogen transmissions, and acute lung injuries. Chapters also examine the complexities of treating specific demographics, of which include the geriatric patient and patients suffering from substance abuse. Essentials of Blood Product Management in Anesthesia Practice is an invaluable guide for anesthesiologists, surgeons, trauma physicians, and solid organ transplant providers.
The 2nd edition of this book describes the recent techniques, strategies, and drugs that have been demonstrated by multicenter randomized trials to influence survival in critically ill, defined as those who have acute failure of at least one organ, due to either a pathological condition or a medical intervention, and require intensive care treatment. Each chapter focuses on a specific procedure, device, or drug. The scope is accordingly wide, with coverage of topics as diverse as noninvasive mechanical ventilation, protective ventilation, prone positioning, intravenous salbutamol in ARDS, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, mild hypothermia after cardiac arrest, daily interruption of sedatives, tranexamic acid, diaspirin cross-linked hemoglobin, albumin, growth hormone, glutamine supplementation, tight glucose control, supranormal oxygen delivery, and hydroxyethyl starch in sepsis. The topics selection was performed with the help of hundreds of specialists from dozens of countries; they expressed via web if they agreed or not with these topics and if they used them in their daily clinical practice. The clear text is supported by "how to do" sections and "key point" boxes that provide easily accessible practical information. Written by acknowledged international experts, Reducing Mortality in Critically Ill Patients is of interest for a wide variety of specialists, including intensivists, emergency doctors, and anesthesiologists.
"Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation : An Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning Approach" provides an overview of the latest techniques, management strategies and technology surrounding the clinical use of ECMO. This interdisciplinary book reviews the most common scenarios of ECMO in 62 chapters exploring the conditions and problems arising in ECMO practice. Each chapter begins with a stem case, followed by open questions to encourage critical thinking and enable the reader to follow the management strategies of the authors, who are world leaders in the field. Followed by an evidence-based discussion, each chapter concludes with multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. This book is current in its knowledge of organ systems and management and keeps pace with new ECMO technology and surgical techniques coupled with current guidelines for management. Starting with the history of ECMO to technical aspects, circuit biocompatibility and interaction with blood, drugs and flow physics, the volume continues into pediatric and adult sections, focussing on both respiratory and cardiovascular support, followed by a section on trauma. The volume then concludes with a section on neurologic complications and ethics, as well as rehabilitation and ambulation of ECMO patients. In addition, to reflect the current global health situation, this book also includes a chapter on ECMO management in patients suffering with COVID-19, to cover the most urgent and pressing questions around ECMO during the ongoing pandemic. This is the first ECMO book on the market to utilise a problem-based learning approach and as such is an important unprecedented project on ECMO education.

Anaesthetic trainees often have enormous trouble understanding the quantitative aspects of the basic sciences underlying clinical anaesthetic practice. The subjects of pharmokinetics and statistics are often unpopular with trainees, and studied with little enthusiasm. In spite of their reluctance, this is an area that they are required to study and understand as a core part of their training for postgraduate exams. This text presents simple mathematical ideas, and explains how these can be used to model and understand problems which arise in clinical anaesthesia. The common features of the underlying mathematics are emphasized through a pictorial/graphical approach, in preference to vast amounts of algebra. The book presents statistics in an informal style, incorporating illustrations and cartoons throughout. The book should be valuable to anaesthetists, in guiding them through what can be an intimidating part of their training.
This book is based on the most common office based anesthesia complications that have been identified over the last 10 years. This has allowed the development of a presentation on the prevention, recognition and management of office based anesthesia complications to be delivered over 10 years to thousands of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in an attempt to reduce the incidence of future complications. This text provides detailed methods to allow the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, anesthetist and anesthesiologist to risk stratify patients as well as prevent, recognize and manage the most common anesthesia related complications. Additionally, it describes how to run an ideal Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) driven megacode, identify differences in pediatric anesthesia and ideally manage opioid needs of the oral and maxillofacial surgery patient. Office Based Anesthesia Complications is based on the most common anesthesia related complications that have been documented over more than 20 years of data collection for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
This manual describes in simple language the clinical and technical skills of an anaesthetic assistant. The key learning points are highlighted, and a comprehensive up-to-date reading list is included to guide the trainee to areas of further reading.
Although most clinicians are aware of the problem of antimicrobial resistance, most also underestimate its significance in their own hospital. The incorrect and inappropriate use of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, as well as poor prevention and poor control of infections, are contributing to the development of such resistance. Appropriate use of antibiotics and compliance with infection prevention and control measures should be integral aspects of good clinical practice and standards of care. However, these activities are often inadequate among clinicians, and there is a considerable gap between the best evidence and actual clinical practice. In hospitals, cultural determinants influence clinical practice, and improving behaviour in terms of infection prevention and antibiotics-prescribing practice remains a challenge. Despite evidence supporting the effectiveness of best practices, many clinicians fail to implement them, and evidence-based processes and practices that are known to optimize both the prevention and the treatment of infections tend to be underused. Addressing precisely this problem, this volume offers an essential toolkit for all surgeons and intensivists interested in improving their clinical practices.
Pain is something that everyone feels but has always been difficult to understand and investigate due to its subjective nature. Practical Pain Management is written for all those involved in the care of people suffering from pain. The authors explain why pain is so often disregarded and poorly managed by clinicians. With an emphasis on the practical management of both chronic and acute pain, the book explores the mechanisms involved in pain percepetion, the use of analgesic drugs, local anesthetics, nerve blocks and stimulation techniques. The rehabilitation and care of patients whose pain cannot be adequately relieved is also considered and some ways in which specialist pain services can help with chronic pain syndromes are described. This comprehensive guide will help all those caring for patients in pain to have a better understanding of pain and to work more effectively towards its management.

This book represents a unique and substantial guide, and will bring anesthesiologists up-to-date on advances in the neuraxial technique and its applications in obstetrics. Today the epidural block is almost exclusively of interest to obstetric anesthesiologists, and how it is taught increasingly coincides with its applications in obstetrics.Since the classical, seminal textbooks by Bonica, Moore and Bromage, published in the 1950s and 60s, textbooks devoted solely to the epidural technique have become quite rare. Among more recent books, there are many excellent texts on epidural anesthesia or analgesia in obstetrics, but none are fully dedicated to the epidural technique, which is usually described in a few paragraphs or, at most, in a chapter. This highly detailed book, including videoclip on epidural technique, offers comprehensive coverage on epidurals; as such, it will appeal to all anesthesiologists, especially obstetric anesthesiologists.
Trauma patients present a unique challenge to anesthesiologists, since they require resource-intensive care, often complicated by pre-existing medical conditions. This fully revised new edition focuses on a broad spectrum of traumatic injuries and the procedures anesthesiologists perform to care for trauma patients perioperatively, surgically, and post-operatively. Special emphasis is given to assessment and treatment of co-existing disease, including surgical management of trauma patients with head, spine, orthopedic, cardiac, and burn injuries. Topics such as training for trauma (including use of simulation) and hypothermia in trauma are also covered. Six brand new chapters address pre-hospital and ED trauma management, imaging in trauma, surgical issues in head trauma and in abdominal trauma, anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial trauma, and prevention of injuries. The text is enhanced with numerous tables and 300 illustrations showcasing techniques of airway management, shock resuscitation, echocardiography and use of ultrasound for the performance of regional anesthesia in trauma.

Another title in GMM's highly successful QBase series, this time focusing on the Primary FRCA (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists) with sets of examination papers the candidate can use to revise and practice their MCQ technique. As always, the self-learning experience is greatly enhanced by the free CD-ROM containing the QBase examination software. This powerful program allows the user to sit the pre-set exams as printed in the book, or to create their own exams using questions drawn from the total pool available on the CD-ROM. The program can either generate these exams randomly (maintaining the same proportions of each subject as the 'pre-set' exams), or the user can select any number of questions in any subject area, to create their very own exam. However the user chooses to set an exam, they can then mark, analyse and store each attempt, and review and re-sit the same exam at a later date, comparing their scores with previous attempts. When re-sitting an exam, the user can also choose to 'shuffle' the question stems A-E, so that they cannot simply remember patterns of true and false answers. A final unique aspect of the program is that it allows the user to select how confident they are of their answer, and the program can then provide feedback on a user's 'guessing strategy'. |
