Books > Medicine > Other branches of medicine > Anaesthetics > General
Anesthesiology and the Cardiovascular Patient contains the edited
presentations of the 41st Annual Postgraduate Course in
Anesthesiology, February 1996. The chapters reflect new data and
concepts within the general framework of the pathophysiology and
management of surgical candidates with cardiovascular disease. The
textbook will serve as a vehicle to bring many of the latest
concepts in anesthesiology to those who did not attend the
conference. Each chapter is a brief but sharply focused glimpse of
the current interest in anesthesia. This volume, as well as past
and future volumes, reflects the rapid and continuing evolution of
anesthesiology in the late twentieth century.
The ability to perform a wide variety of practical procedures
safely and competently is essential for any doctor involved in the
practice of anesthesia and intensive care. Junior doctors
especially are now called upon to gain competence in many invasive
practical procedures in an increasingly short space of time, whilst
also understanding the theory behind them.
This highly practical book is the only guide needed to the
procedures and techniques commonly used in anesthesia and critical
care medicine. Step-by-step, it clearly explains each technique and
procedure, enabling the reader to fully understand how and why they
are performed. Full colour photographs illustrate each technique,
and every chapter covers the same essential information:
definition, indications, contraindications, complications,
equipment, sites, and technique, for ease of use.
This book will be used by all junior trainees in anesthesia, along
with junior doctors from other specialities working in intensive
care units. It will also be useful to any senior anesthetist who
wishes to update or refresh their knowledge, as well as anyone
working in the emergency ward who performs any of these procedures.
This book provides anesthetists, intensivists and other critical
care staff with a comprehensive resource that offers ways of
improving communication in everyday clinical practice, and provides
practical communication tools that can be used in difficult or
unfamiliar circumstances. It demonstrates how communication can be
structured to improve patient care and safety with numerous
practical examples and vignettes illustrating how the concepts
discussed can be integrated into clinical practice, and presents
ideas in a way that enhances clinical interactions with patients
and colleagues and facilitate the teaching of trainees.
Edited by practicing anesthetists with particular expertise in
teaching communication, and with contributions from expert
clinicians based in North America, Europe and Australasia, this
book will stimulate and complement the development of comprehensive
resources for communication skills teaching in anesthesia and other
related professional groups.
Apart from diabetes mellitus, endocrine diseases requiring surgical
treatment are relatively uncommon. However, when they do occur,
they frequently present major clinical anaesthestic problems that
require extensive knowledge of the pathophysiology of the
condition, and considerable anaesthetic expertise. This book
provides the anaesthetist with a comprehensive examination of each
of the endocrine conditions, covering underlying pathophysiological
problems, and guidance on optimal anaesthetic care. It will be of
use to trainee and consultant anaesthetists working in both
specialist endocrine wards and general surgery wards where a
patient with endocrine disease might present.

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books
about the hidden lives of ordinary things. "OK" as a word accepts
proposals, describes the world as satisfactory (but not good),
provides conversational momentum, or even agrees (or disagrees). OK
as an object, however, tells a story of how technology writes
itself into language, permanently altering communication. OK is a
young word, less than 200 years old. It began as an acronym for
"all correct" when the steam-powered printing press pushed
newspapers into the mainstream. Today it is spoken and written by
nearly everyone in the world. Drawing on linguistics, history, and
new media studies, Michelle McSweeney traces OK from its birth in
the Penny Presses through telephone lines, grammar books, and
television signals into the digital age. Nearly ubiquitous and
often overlooked, OK illustrates the never-ending dance between
language, technology, and culture, and offers lessons for our own
techno-historical moment. Object Lessons is published in
partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.
This book is a comprehensive guide to ophthalmic anaesthesia
detailing different types of anaesthesia, techniques, subsequent
effects and possible complications. Divided into six sections the
book begins with basic clinical knowledge including anatomy and
physiology and the effects of ocular medications. The following
sections examine the techniques and uses of regional anaesthesia,
concluding with a chapter on emergencies in ocular surgery. The
second half of the book covers general anaesthesia covering the
physiological and pharmacological effects on the eye, and its use
for numerous subspecialty surgical procedures including for
examination and diagnosis, for paediatric surgeries, vitreoretinal
surgery, glaucoma, emergency eye surgery and more. The final
section is dedicated to the causes and management of chronic
ophthalmic pain. Each chapter features an abstract and 'nuggets of
wisdom' providing useful points on the topic. Nearly 200 clinical
images and tables enhance learning. Key Points Comprehensive guide
to ophthalmic anaesthesia covering types, techniques, effects and
complications Discusses both regional and general anaesthesia for
numerous ocular surgeries Includes chapters on emergencies in
ocular surgical procedures Each chapter includes an abstract and

This book highlights remarkable new endoscopic, laparoscopic, and
thoracoscopic approaches to the removal of surgical lesions for
different pathologic conditions under general endotracheal
anesthesia in infants and children. It details how newer techniques
in airway management, monitoring, regional nerve blocks for these
innovative minimally invasive approaches have resulted in a
decrease in intraoperative and postoperative morbidity and early
recovery process after pediatric anesthesia. This unique book
contains features that provide the audience with several clinical
scenarios where exceptional surgical outcomes are achieved with
optimum pre-op preparation via collaborative team efforts. To date
there is no other textbook emphasizing the anesthetic and surgical
management during the most innovative advances in endoscopic
surgery in children. Per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the
definitive treatment of achalasia in children is probably the most
advanced endoscopic surgery done successfully in children. POEM is
the best example of endoscopic surgery performed via natural
orifices known as the Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic
surgery (NOTES). Another new laparoscopic surgical intervention
-Median Arcuate Ligament surgical release for Median Arcuate
Ligament Syndrome (MALS) for patients with Postural Orthostatic
Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is described with established
perioperative protocols emphasizing the need for early admission,
intravenous hydration, and premedication. Novel approaches in the
anesthetic management in children with short bowel syndrome for
bowel lengthening techniques like the serial transverse
enteroplasty (STEP) and in teenagers for laparoscopic bariatric
surgery with adjustable gastric banding (AGB) and vertical sleeve
gastrectomy (VSG) for morbid obesity are new areas that would
enlighten the readers. Anesthetic Management in Pediatric General
Surgery is an invaluable resource for pediatric anesthesiologists,
surgeons, and their trainees specializing in the care of pediatric
patients.
Head injuries are commonplace. Though most patients survive, the consequences, both physical and social, can be devastating. The methods of initial assessment and management can have a crucial effect on determining the outcome of the injury, and long-term effects. However, only a minority of head-injured patients are cared for by Neurosurgeons. The majority are seen by non-specialists, often junior doctors and nurses, and treated in district hospitals where specialist neurosurgical assistance is unavailable. As a guide for doctors and nurses working in the A & E department, or the Orthopaedic or General Surgical Ward, the emphasis of this book is on the early management of the head- injured patient. New to the second edition are chapters on managing the 'disturbed' head injured patient, a chapter of special value to nurses (who often have to deal with this difficult task). A new chapter on anaesthesia and head injuries has also been added, with other chapters significantly revised to reflect the crucial role played by anaesthetists in head injury management. Providing practical advice on the early treatment of minor head injuries, and the management of major head injuries, the book provides advice that will be essential in ensuring effective treatment of these patients. From reviews of first edition: '... an excellent account of the management of head injuries... this one certainly fulfils its stated aim and is to be recommended.' JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY, NEUROSCIENCE, AND PSYCHIATRY '... concise and well-referenced... a worthwhile addition to an A& E department's bookshelves.' NURSING TIMES 'The text is easy to read, and is of particular use to non-specialist staff... Useful as an introduction for junior neurosurgeons in training.' ANNALS OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF ENGLAND
In recent years capnography has gained a foothold in the medical
field and is fast becoming a standard of care in anaesthesiology
and critical care medicine. In addition, newer applications have
emerged which have expanded the utility of capnographs in a number
of medical disciplines. This new edition of the definitive text on
capnography reviews every aspect of this valuable diagnostic
technique. An introductory section summarises the basic physiology
of carbon dioxide generation and transport in the body. A technical
section describes how the instruments work, and a comprehensive
clinical section reviews the use of capnography to diagnose a wide
range of clinical disorders. Edited by the world experts in the
technique, and with over 40 specialist contributors, Capnography,
second edition, is the most comprehensive review available on the
application of capnography in health care.
Anaesthetic trainees often have enormous trouble understanding the quantitative aspects of the basic sciences underlying clinical anaesthetic practice. The subjects of pharmokinetics and statistics are often unpopular with trainees, and studied with little enthusiasm. In spite of their reluctance, this is an area that they are required to study and understand as a core part of their training for postgraduate exams. Mathematics and statistics for anaesthetists presents simple mathematical ideas, and explains how these can be used to model and understand problems which arise in clinical anaesthesia. The common features of the underlying mathematics are emphasised through a pictorial/graphical approach, in preference to vast amounts of algebra. The book presents statistics in an informal and less intimidating style that most standard statistical texts, incorporating illustrations and cartoons throughout. The book will be valuable to anaesthetists, in guiding them through what can be an intimidating part of their training.
This book is a comprehensive guide to Targeted Drug Delivery (TDD),
also known as Intrathecal Drug Delivery (IDD), and offers an
overview to this unique form of treatment. The medication is
delivered by intrathecal pumps and is less common than some other
techniques for interventional pain management, but is essential in
conditions such as refractory pain, cancer pain, multifocal pain,
severe spasticity, and in patients who are not candidates for
surgical correction of their underlying condition. This book is the
first source to describe both the optimal surgical implantation and
patient management aspect of this therapy, and thus will be a
valuable single reference guide for interventional radiologists,
anesthesiologists, physiatrists, oncologists, neurologists, spine
surgeons, palliative care physicians, and primary care physicians.
The Essence of Analgesia and Analgesics is an invaluable practical
resource for clinicians giving pain relief in any clinical setting,
describing the pharmacologic principles and clinical use of all
available pain medications. As well as detailed overviews of pain
processing and analgesic theory, sections are dedicated to oral and
panteral opioid analgesics, neuraxial opioids, NSAIDs, local
anesthetics, anticonvulsant type analgesics, NMDA antagonists,
alpha adrenergic analgesics, antidepressant analgesics, muscle
relaxants, adjuvant medications, and new and emerging analgesics.
The concise format of the chapters allows for quick and easy
reading and assimilation of information. Enhanced by summary tables
and figures, each chapter provides an overview of a particular
drug, covering chemical structure, mode of activity, indications,
contraindications, common doses and uses, advantages and
disadvantages, and drug related adverse events. Key references are
also provided. Edited by leading experts in pain management, this
is essential reading for any clinician involved in pain management.
This manual describes in simple language the clinical and technical skills of an anaesthetic assistant. The key learning points are highlighted, and a comprehensive up-to-date reading list is included to guide the trainee to areas of further reading.
This concise reference provides a core curriculum for those who
have to look after critically ill children. Early recognition of
those children who need intensive care, prompt resuscitation, and
safe transportation to specialized units are the keys to success
for the sickest children. Management of the common disorders is
covered in a practical manner, as are the legal and ethical
considerations.
