Geologist and seismologist Richard Dixon Oldham (1858 1936) is best known for making two fundamental discoveries: in 1900 he identified primary, secondary and tertiary seismic waves, and in 1906 he presented evidence for the existence of the Earth's core. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the Geological Society of London and the Royal Society, Oldham spent a large part of his career in Asia. Involved in the Geological Survey of India for twenty-five years, he played a key role in the development of geological research in the region (his revised Manual of the Geology in India is also reissued in this series). Originally published in 1888, the present work was the first bibliography of its kind and remains a valuable reference tool in earth sciences. Notably, Oldham chose to broaden the scope of the work by also listing papers on Indian mineralogy, geography, archaeology and botany.

Dissatisfaction with the 'soft' school curriculum of the time advocated by the professional education establishment, and concern over the growing technological sophistication of the Soviet Union, led government officials to encourage a handful of elite research scientists, fresh from their World War II successes, to revitalize the nations' science curricula. In Scientists in the Classroom , John L. Rudolph argues that the Cold War environment, long neglected in the history of education literature, is crucial to understanding both the reasons for the public acceptance of scientific authority in the field of education and the nature of the curriculum materials that were eventually produced. Jean-Francois Daubuisson (1769 1841), geologist and engineer, was an Officer of the Legion d'Honneur, Knight of St Louis and Chief Engineer at the Royal Mining Corps. He published numerous papers on geology, mining and hydraulics, and is best known for his textbooks, Traite de Geognosie and Traite d'Hydraulique. He studied geology and mineralogy in Freiburg with Abraham Werner, the key proponent of Neptunism, the theory that all rocks had an aqueous origin. Later in his career Daubuisson was to side with the Plutonists, who argued that basalts formed from molten rock. However, in this paper, published in French in 1803, he describes his observations of the basalts of Saxony and argues that they, and all basalts, are sedimentary. This English translation by the Secretary of the Wernerian Natural History Society was published in 1814, and provides a fascinating insight into this discredited but once influential theory of the Earth.
Interest by American educators in the Holocaust has increased exponentially during the second half of the twentieth century. In 1960 the Holocaust was barely being addressed in American public schools. Yet by the 1990s several states had mandated the teaching of the event. Drawing upon a variety of sources including unpublished works and interviews, this study traces the rise of genocide education in America. The author demonstrates how the genesis of this movement can be attributed to a grassroots effort initiated by several teachers, who introduced the topic as a way to help their students navigate the moral and ethical ambiguity of the times.
