Christoph Gengnagel, Emilia Nagy, Rainer Stark
R4,420 R3,563 Discovery Miles 35 630 Save R857 (19%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this book, the authors describe the findings derived from interaction and cooperation between scientific actors employing diverse practices. They reflect on distinct prototyping concepts and examine the transformation of development culture in their fusion to hybrid approaches and solutions. The products of tomorrow are going to be multifunctional, interactive systems - and already are to some degree today. Collaboration across multiple disciplines is the only way to grasp their complexity in design concepts. This underscores the importance of reconsidering the prototyping process for the development of these systems, particularly in transdisciplinary research teams. "Rethinking Prototyping - new hybrid concepts for prototyping" was a transdisciplinary project that took up this challenge. The aim of this programmatic rethinking was to come up with a general concept of prototyping by combining innovative prototyping concepts, which had been researched and developed in three sub-projects: "Hybrid Prototyping" developed new prototyping approaches to validate and evaluate holistically developed systems with their services, infrastructure and business models. "Blended Prototyping" addressed a new technique whereby prototypes for user interfaces of software applications can be generated from hand drawings and immediately be tested. "Beyond Prototyping" examined the issue of the prototype in connection with algorithmically generated design for producing tailor-made products.

Marc Aiguier, Francis Bretaudeau, Daniel Krob
R5,777 Discovery Miles 57 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Con- rence on "Complex System Design & Management" (CSDM 2010; website: http://www.csdm2010.csdm.fr). Jointly organized, under the guidance of the CESAMES nonpro?t organization, by Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Centrale de Paris, it was held from October 27 to October 29 at the Cit' e Internationale Universitaire of Paris (France). Mastering complex systems requires the understanding of industrial pr- tices as well as sophisticated theoretical techniques and tools. Thus, the c- ationofameetingforumatEuropeanlevel(whichdidnotexistyet)dedicated to all academic researchers and industrial actors working on complex ind- trial systems engineering was deemed crucial. It was actually for us a sine qua non condition in order to nurture and develop in Europe this complex industrial systems science which is now emergent. The purpose of the "Complex Systems Design & Management" (CSDM) conference was exactly to be such a forum, in order to become, in time, the European academic-industrial conference of reference in the ?eld of complex industrialsystems engineering, which is a quite ambitious objective. To make the CSDM conference this convergence point of the academic and industrial communities in complex industrial systems, we based our organization on a principle of complete parity between academics and industrialists (see the conference organization sections in the next pages). This principle was ?rst implemented as follows: * the Programme Committee consists of 50 % academics and 50 % indust- alists, * the Invited Speakers are coming equally from academic and industrial environments.

Jurgen Gausemeier, Franz Josef Rammig, Wilhelm Schafer, Walter Sextro
R3,513 Discovery Miles 35 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Intelligent technical systems, which combine mechanical, electrical and software engineering with methods from control engineering and advanced mathematics, go far beyond the state of the art in mechatronics and open up fascinating perspectives. Among these systems are so-called self-optimizing systems, which are able to adapt their behavior autonomously and flexibly to changing operating conditions. The Collaborative Research Center 614 "Self-optimizing concepts and structures in mechanical engineering" pursued the long-term aim to enable others to develop dependable self-optimizing systems. Assuring their dependability poses new challenges. However, self-optimization also offers the possibility to adapt the system's behavior to improve dependability during operation.

The aim of this book is to provide methods and techniques to master the challenges and to exploit the possibilities given by self-optimization. The reader will be able to develop self-optimizing systems that fulfill and surpass today s dependability requirements easily.

This book is directed to researchers and practitioners alike. It gives a brief introduction to the holistic development approach for self-optimizing mechatronic systems and the steps required to assure a dependable product design starting with the very early conceptual design phase. A guideline to select suitable methods for each step and the methods themselves are included. Each method is individually introduced, many examples and full references are given.

Mechanical Design Optimization Using Advanced Optimization Techniques (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): R. Venkata Rao, Vimal J. Savsani Mechanical Design Optimization Using Advanced Optimization Techniques (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
R. Venkata Rao, Vimal J. Savsani
R4,390 Discovery Miles 43 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mechanical design includes an optimization process in which designers always consider objectives such as strength, deflection, weight, wear, corrosion, etc. depending on the requirements. However, design optimization for a complete mechanical assembly leads to a complicated objective function with a large number of design variables. It is a good practice to apply optimization techniques for individual components or intermediate assemblies than a complete assembly. Analytical or numerical methods for calculating the extreme values of a function may perform well in many practical cases, but may fail in more complex design situations. In real design problems, the number of design parameters can be very large and their influence on the value to be optimized (the goal function) can be very complicated, having nonlinear character. In these complex cases, advanced optimization algorithms offer solutions to the problems, because they find a solution near to the global optimum within reasonable time and computational costs.

"Mechanical Design Optimization Using Advanced Optimization Techniques" presents a comprehensive review on latest research and development trends for design optimization of mechanical elements and devices. Using examples of various mechanical elements and devices, the possibilities for design optimization with advanced optimization techniques are demonstrated. Basic and advanced concepts of traditional and advanced optimization techniques are presented, along with real case studies, results of applications of the proposed techniques, and the best optimization strategies to achieve best performance are highlighted. Furthermore, a novel advanced optimization method named teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) is presented in this book and this method shows better performance with less computational effort for the large scale problems.

"Mechanical Design Optimization Using Advanced Optimization Techniques" is intended for designers, practitioners, managers, institutes involved in design related projects, applied research workers, academics, and graduate students in mechanical and industrial engineering and will be useful to the industrial product designers for realizing a product as it presents new models and optimization techniques to make tasks easier, logical, efficient and effective. .

A Mathematical Theory of Design: Foundations, Algorithms and Applications (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): D. Braha, O. Maimon A Mathematical Theory of Design: Foundations, Algorithms and Applications (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)
D. Braha, O. Maimon
R5,991 Discovery Miles 59 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Formal Design Theory (PDT) is a mathematical theory of design. The main goal of PDT is to develop a domain independent core model of the design process. The book focuses the reader's attention on the process by which ideas originate and are developed into workable products. In developing PDT, we have been striving toward what has been expressed by the distinguished scholar Simon (1969): that "the science of design is possible and some day we will be able to talk in terms of well-established theories and practices. " The book is divided into five interrelated parts. The conceptual approach is presented first (Part I); followed by the theoretical foundations of PDT (Part II), and from which the algorithmic and pragmatic implications are deduced (Part III). Finally, detailed case-studies illustrate the theory and the methods of the design process (Part IV), and additional practical considerations are evaluated (Part V). The generic nature of the concepts, theory and methods are validated by examples from a variety of disciplines. FDT explores issues such as: algebraic representation of design artifacts, idealized design process cycle, and computational analysis and measurement of design process complexity and quality. FDT's axioms convey the assumptions of the theory about the nature of artifacts, and potential modifications of the artifacts in achieving desired goals or functionality. By being able to state these axioms explicitly, it is possible to derive theorems and corollaries, as well as to develop specific analytical and constructive methodologies.

R6,894 Discovery Miles 68 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nonlinear dynamics has been enjoying a vast development for nearly four decades resulting in a range of well established theory, with the potential to significantly enhance performance, effectiveness, reliability and safety of physical systems as well as offering novel technologies and designs. By critically appraising the state of the art, it is now time to develop design criteria and technology for new generation products/processes operating on principles of nonlinear interaction and in the nonlinear regime, leading to more effective, sensitive, accurate, and durable methods than what is currently available. This new approach is expected to radically influence the design, control and exploitation paradigms, in a magnitude of contexts. With a strong emphasis on experimentally calibrated and validated models, contributions by top-level international experts will foster future directions for the development of engineering technologies and design using robust nonlinear dynamics modelling and analysis.

We live in an age in which one can easily think that our generation has invented and discovered almost everything; but the truth is quite the opposite. Progress cannot be considered as sudden unexpected spurts of individual brains: such a genius, the inventor of everything, has never existed in the history of humanity. What did exist was a limitless procession of experiments made by men who did not waver when faced with defeat, but were inspired by the rare successes that have led to our modern comfortable reality. And that continue to do so with the same enthusiasm. The study of the History of Engineering is valuable for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it can help us to understand the genius of the scientists, engineers and craftsmen who existed centuries and millenniums before us; who solved problems using the devices of their era, making machinery and equipment whose concept is of such a surprising modernity that we must rethink our image of the past.

Introduction to Creativity and Innovation for Engineers, Global Edition (Paperback, Global ed): Stuart Walesh Introduction to Creativity and Innovation for Engineers, Global Edition (Paperback, Global ed)
Stuart Walesh
R2,631 Discovery Miles 26 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For courses in creativity and innovation for engineers. Emphasising the Importance of Innovation and Creativity for Engineers This first edition of Introduction to Creativity and Innovation for Engineers was primarily designed for engineering students interested in acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) that will help them be more creative and innovative. While intended primarily for engineering students, the widely applicable principles, ideas, tools, and methods introduced will also be useful for practicing engineers and as well as members of other disciplines. The text argues for a "whole-brain" approach to the study of engineering, using neuroscience as a foundation. While the left brain (logical and analytic) is essential to the study of engineering, the author believes that engineering students and practitioners will be more successful if they learn to also engage in more right brain processing (intuitive and emotional). Similarly, they should draw on knowledge of conscious and subconscious thinking and view the brain as a muscle that can be continuously strengthened. Building on that "Neuroscience 101" foundation, the text prepares future and current engineers to work smarter-either as individuals or within teams and organisations-by generating and developing new ideas. The nine chapter structure uses clear objectives, many examples, and numerous exercises to explicate its methods, ultimately enabling students and practitioners to realise that they're already capable of creative - innovative thinking. They only need to apply the 20 methods described in the book to unlock their brain's natural capabilities and then produce creative-innovative results for their benefit and for the benefit of others.

Global Optimization in Engineering Design (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Ignacio E. Grossmann Global Optimization in Engineering Design (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Ignacio E. Grossmann
R5,807 Discovery Miles 58 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mathematical Programming has been of significant interest and relevance in engineering, an area that is very rich in challenging optimization problems. In particular, many design and operational problems give rise to nonlinear and mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems whose modeling and solu tion is often nontrivial. Furthermore, with the increased computational power and development of advanced analysis (e. g. , process simulators, finite element packages) and modeling systems (e. g. , GAMS, AMPL, SPEEDUP, ASCEND, gPROMS), the size and complexity of engineering optimization models is rapidly increasing. While the application of efficient local solvers (nonlinear program ming algorithms) has become widespread, a major limitation is that there is often no guarantee that the solutions that are generated correspond to global optima. In some cases finding a local solution might be adequate, but in others it might mean incurring a significant cost penalty, or even worse, getting an incorrect solution to a physical problem. Thus, the need for finding global optima in engineering is a very real one. It is the purpose of this monograph to present recent developments of tech niques and applications of deterministic approaches to global optimization in engineering. The present monograph is heavily represented by chemical engi neers; and to a large extent this is no accident. The reason is that mathematical programming is an active and vibrant area of research in chemical engineering. This trend has existed for about 15 years.

Marian Iordache, Panos J. Antsaklis
R4,521 Discovery Miles 45 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing complexity in engineering projects raises difficult challenges in industry and requires effective tools for correct-by-construction design or design verification. This book addresses the design of such tools for correct-by-construction synthesis of supervisors for systems and specifications represented in the discrete-event framework. The approach employed uses Petri nets as discrete-event models and structural methods for the synthesis of supervisors, and may lead to significant computational benefits.Highlighting recent progress in the design of supervisors by structural methods, the book represents a novel contribution to the field. One of the main features of the presentation is the demonstration that structural methods can address a variety of supervisor specifications under diverse supervision settings. Applications of the methods presented are emphasized by considering various concurrency assumptions and types of system uncontrollability and unobservability. Also considered is the supervision problem for decentralized settings and hybrid dynamical systems. All proposed methods are fully worked-out, ready to use, and formally proven in a sound setting. design are also given. The work is self-contained and includes necessary background on Petri nets and supervision. Requiring only basic knowledge of undergraduate-level discrete mathematics, the text is accessible to a broad audience. Researchers and developers from various engineering fields may find effective means to reduce the complexity of design problems in the discrete-event setting. Graduate students may use the work as a self-study reference, and portions of the text may be used in advanced courses on discrete-event systems.

Advanced Methods of Fatigue Assessment (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Dieter Radaj, Michael Vormwald Advanced Methods of Fatigue Assessment (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)

While investigations into both theories and models has remained a major strand of engineering design research, current literature sorely lacks a reference book that provides a comprehensive and up-to-date anthology of theories and models, and their philosophical and empirical underpinnings; "An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design "fills this gap.

The text collects the expert views of an international authorship, covering:

. significant theories in engineering design, including CK theory, domain theory, and the theory of technical systems;

. current models of design, from a function behavior structure model to an integrated model;

. important empirical research findings from studies into design; and

. philosophical underpinnings of design itself.

For educators and researchers in engineering design, "An Anthology of Theories and Models of Design "gives access to in-depth coverage of theoretical and empirical developments in this area; for practitioners, the book will provide exposure to theoretical and empirical foundations to methods and tools that are currently practiced as well as those in the process of development."
