This book provides an update on recent advances in various areas of modern engineering design, such as mechanical, materials, computer, and process engineering, which provide the foundation for the development of improved structures, materials, and processes. The modern design cycle is characterized by the interaction of different disciplines and a strong shift toward computer-based approaches involving only a small number of experiments for verification purposes. A major driver for this development is the increased demand for cost reduction, which is also connected to environmental demands. In the transportation industry (e.g. automotive or aerospace), where there is a demand for greater fuel efficiency, one solution is lighter structures and/or improved processes for energy conversion. Another emerging area is the interaction of classical engineering with the health and medical sector.
Many business corporations are faced with the challenge of bringing together quite different types of knowledge in design processes: knowledge of different disciplines in the natural and engineering sciences, knowledge of markets and market trends, knowledge of political and juridical affairs. This also means a challenge for design methodology as the academic discipline that studies design processes and methods. The aim of the NATO ARW of which this book is the report was to bring together colleagues from different academic fields to discuss this increasing multidisciplinarity in the relationship between design and sciences. This multidisciplinarity made the conference a special event. At a certain moment one of the participants exclaimed: "This is not a traditional design methodology conference " Throughout the conference it was evident that there was a need to develop a common language and understanding to enable the exchange of different perspectives on design and its relationship with science. The contributions that have been included in this book show these different perspectives: the philosophical, the historical, the engineering perspective and the practical designer's experience.
This book examines the field of surrounding rock control mechanisms and support technologies in underground engineering, and proposes a high-strength support system to address the complex conditions in underground engineering, such as high stress, extremely soft rocks, fault fracture zone and strong mining activity. It also comprehensively discusses the concept and bearing mechanisms of the supporting system, design calculation methods, field application and key construction technologies. The book describes the design and construction of a large-scale mechanical test system, independently developed by the author for high- strength confined concrete arches, which can also be used to define the mechanism of deformation and failure of confined concrete arches. Further, the book explores the application of the confined concrete support system in underground engineering with complex conditions, and its control effect on soft surrounding rock. The first international book presenting the theory and key technologies of high-strength, confined concrete support, it is a valuable reference resource for design, construction and supervision staff in the field of geotechnical engineering, as well as for teachers, students and researchers.

This textbook draws on the authors' experience gained by teaching courses for engineering students on e.g. vehicle mechanics, vehicle system design, and chassis design; and on their practical experience as engineering designers for vehicle and chassis components at a major automotive company. The book is primarily intended for students of automotive engineering, but also for all technicians and designers working in this field. Other enthusiastic engineers will also find it to be a useful technical guide. The present volume (The Automotive Chassis - Volume 2: System Design) focuses on the automotive chassis as a system, providing readers with the knowledge needed to integrate the individual components described in Volume 1 in a complex system that satisfies customers' expectations. Special emphasis is given to factors influencing system performance, including: - the influence of the powertrain on vehicle performance. Conventional, hybrid and electric powertrains are considered; - factors influencing vehicles' handling performance; - factors influencing vehicles' comfort performance; and - factors influencing vehicles' stability and strategies for accident avoidance (active safety). In addition, this second volume thoroughly covers topics that are usually neglected in other books about the automotive chassis, such as: - the basics of vehicle aerodynamics; - internal combustion engines, electric motors and batteries; and - mathematical modeling tools. This thoroughly revised second edition has been updated to reflect the latest advances in electric and hybrid vehicles, electronic control systems and autonomous driving.
Various structures, such as buildings, bridges, and paved roads play an important role in our lives. However, these construction projects require large expenditures. Designing infrastructure cost-efficiently while satisfying all necessary design constraints is one of the most important and difficult tasks for a structural engineer. Traditionally, mathematical gradient-based optimization techniques have been applied to these designs. However, these gradient-based methods are not suitable for discrete design variables such as factory-made cross sectional area of structural members. Recently, researchers have turned their interest to phenomenon-mimicking optimization techniques because these techniques have proved able to efficiently handle discrete design variables. One of these techniques is harmony search, an algorithm developed from musical improvisation that has been applied to various structural design problems and has demonstrated cost-savings. This book gathers all the latest developments relating to the application of the harmony search algorithm in the structural design field in order for readers to efficiently understand the full spectrum of the algorithm's potential and to easily apply the algorithm to their own structural problems. This book contains six chapters with the following subjects: standard harmony search algorithm and its applications by Lee; standard harmony search algorithm for steel frame design by Degertekin; adaptive harmony search algorithm and its applications by Saka and Hasancebi; harmony particle swarm algorithm and its applications by Li and Liu; hybrid algorithm of harmony search, particle swarm & ant colony for structural design by Kaveh and Talatahari; and parameter calibration of viscoelastic and damage functions by Mun and Geem."

This book develops innovative techniques from operational research and management science for the design and implementation of a reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), and subsequently analyzes and assesses their performance. A reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a paradigm that can address many of the challenges posed by the modern market. Accordingly, substantial research is now being conducted on RMS, focusing on various levels of decision-making (strategic, tactical and operational). However, as a relatively new research area, there are still only very few books and articles available on reconfigurable manufacturing system design and management. In addition to filling that gap, this book provides a forum for investigating, exchanging ideas on, and disseminating the latest advances in the broad area of RMS applications in today's industry. Gathering contributions by experts from academia, industry and policy-making, it represents an essential contribution to the existing literature on manufacturing and logistics in general and industry 4.0 in particular.

""This is an engaging and informative book on the modern practice of experimental design. The authors' writing style is entertaining, the consulting dialogs are extremely enjoyable, and the technical material is presented brilliantly but not overwhelmingly. The book is a joy to read. Everyone who practices or teaches DOE should read this book." -" Douglas C. Montgomery, Regents Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering, Arizona State University ""It's been said: 'Design for the experiment, don't experiment
for the design.' This book ably demonstrates this notion by showing
how tailor-made, optimal designs can be effectively employed to
meet a client's actual needs. It should be required reading for
anyone interested in using the design of experiments in industrial
settings." This book demonstrates the utility of the computer-aided optimal design approach using real industrial examples. These examples address questions such as the following: How can I do screening inexpensively if I have dozens of factors to investigate? What can I do if I have day-to-day variability and I can only perform 3 runs a day?How can I do RSM cost effectively if I have categorical factors? How can I design and analyze experiments when there is a factor that can only be changed a few times over the study? How can I include both ingredients in a mixture and processing factors in the same study? How can I design an experiment if there are many factor combinations that are impossible to run?How can I make sure that a time trend due to warming up of equipment does not affect the conclusions from a study? How can I take into account batch information in when designing experiments involving multiple batches? How can I add runs to a botched experiment to resolve ambiguities? While answering these questions the book also shows how to evaluate and compare designs. This allows researchers to make sensible trade-offs between the cost of experimentation and the amount of information they obtain.

This book explores systems-based, co-design, introducing a "Decision-Based, Co-Design" (DBCD) approach for the co-design of materials, products, and processes. In recent years there have been significant advances in modeling and simulation of material behavior, from the smallest atomic scale to the macro scale. However, the uncertainties associated with these approaches and models across different scales need to be addressed to enable decision-making resulting in designs that are robust, that is, relatively insensitive to uncertainties. An approach that facilitates co-design is needed across material, product design and manufacturing processes. This book describes a cloud-based platform to support decisions in the design of engineered systems (CB-PDSIDES), which feature an architecture that promotes co-design through the servitization of decision-making, knowledge capture and use templates that allow previous solutions to be reused. Placing the platform in the cloud aids mass collaboration and open innovation. A valuable reference resource reference on all areas related to the design of materials, products and processes, the book appeals to material scientists, design engineers and all those involved in the emerging interdisciplinary field of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).
