R846 R707 Discovery Miles 7 070 Save R139 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book recreates the ambiance of the ocean liner era by showing the actual objects used on board. Each piece of ocean-liner memorabilia is like an Aladdin's lamp, releasing wondrous memories of that grand style of travel. Beginning in the late 1890s, shipping lines forged their identities by commissioning unique furniture, china, silverware, glassware, vases, ashtrays, playing cards, menus, and stationery. These types of items characterized the different ocean liners, from the Normandie with her elegant Art Deco furnishings, to the stainless steel gleam of the S.S. United States, to the old-world luxury of the Queens.

The Westford Knight is a mysterious, controversial stone carving in Massachusetts. Some believe it is an effigy of a 14th century knight, evidence of an early European visit to the New World by Henry Sinclair, the Earl of Orkney and Lord of Roslin. In 1954, an archaeologist encountered the carving, long known to locals and ascribed a variety of origin stories, and proposed it to be a remnant of the Sinclair expedition. The story of the Westford Knight is a mix of history, archaeology, sociology, and Knights Templar lore. This work unravels the threads of the Knight's history, separating fact from fantasy. This revised edition includes a new foreword and four new chapters which add context to the myth-building that has surrounded the Westford Knight and artifacts like it.

Autonomous Ships and the Law (Paperback): Henrik Ringbom, Erik Rosaeg, Trond Solvang Autonomous Ships and the Law (Paperback)
Henrik Ringbom, Erik Rosaeg, Trond Solvang
R1,252 Discovery Miles 12 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interest in autonomous ships has grown exponentially over the past few years. Whereas a few years ago, the prospect of unmanned and autonomous vessels sailing on the seas was considered unrealistic, the debate now centers on when and in what format and pace the development will take place. Law has a key role to play in this development and legal obstacles are often singled out as principal barriers to the rapid introduction of new technologies in shipping. Within a few years, autonomous ships have turned from a non-issue to one of the main regulatory topics being addressed by the International Maritime Organization. However, the regulatory discussion is still in its infancy, and while many new questions have been raised, few answers have been provided to them to date. Increased automation of tasks that have traditionally been undertaken by ships' crews raises interesting legal questions across the whole spectrum of maritime law. The first of its kind, this book explores the issue of autonomous ships from a wide range of legal perspectives, including both private law and public law at international and national level, making available cutting-edge research which will be of significant interest to researchers in maritime law.

R494 R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Save R44 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Whenever vessels have foundered off the coasts of Britain, there have always been those willing to give their all to save those in peril. But in 1823, Sir William Hillary decided that this admirable but impromptu approach was not enough. He believed that many more lives could be saved by the establishment of a national, organised rescue service. His idea was realised the following year. From the days of oar-powered open boats to modern high speed, hi-tech vessels, rescuers have battled storms and unimaginable conditions, risking - and sometimes forfeiting - their own lives in efforts to save others. The most outstanding of these operations led to the awarding of gold medals for gallantry, the RNLI version of the Victoria Cross. Above all, these are human stories. Using information gleaned from archives, contemporary newspaper accounts and genealogical records, this book looks not just at the details of the rescues, but into the people behind them.

Warships and Warship Modelling (Hardcover): David Wooley, William Clarke Warships and Warship Modelling (Hardcover)
David Wooley, William Clarke
R740 Discovery Miles 7 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a book which will appeal equally to naval enthusiasts and ship modellers. It offers an overview of the design, development and classification of modern warship types and it studies the constructors' original models, explaining why and how they were made. The reader is shown how to research and select information on specific ships and how to find and understand plans. The book then turns to scale modelling with detailed chapters on choosing a subject, a scale, methods of construction (scratch or kit?), materials and techniques and the details of fittings and painting. The book leaves the reader with a deeper insight into the direct relationship between the full sized vessel and the realistic scale model or working model. The work presents an overview of the design, development and classification of modern warship types and offers an appreciation of the complex structures associated with real warship designs and how they can be related to those on warship models. It is illustrated by over 100 of the authors' fine quality photographs, many of which have never been published before.

Yasuhisa Okumoto, Yu Takeda, Masaki Mano, Tetsuo Okada
R6,693 Discovery Miles 66 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, the four authors show us the condensed experience how to design ship hull structures from a practical viewpoint. In three parts, the book presents the fundamentals, the theory and the application of structural design of hulls. The topics are treated comprehensively with an emphasis on how to achieve reliable and efficient ship structures. The authors have in particular introduced their experiences with the rapid increase of ship sizes as well as the introduction of ship types with a high degree of specialization. The associated early failures of these "new" structures have been analyzed to provide the readers with illustrations why structural design needs to be carried out on several levels in order to ensure that correct loading is applied and that local structural behaviour in properly understood.
