The one-humped camel, or dromedary, is one of the world's hardiest domesticated animals. A vital source of transport, meat, milk and income for pastoralists in the Sahel, East Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, the camel can carry heavy loads for days in some of the world's most hostile conditions. But even camels fall ill. A Field Manual of Camel Diseases is the first practical guide to camel diseases designed for use in low technology environments. The manual details some 80 major camel diseases and conditions, ranging from abortions to wry neck syndrome. For each disease, the authors give the disease signs, its causes, and simple prevention and treatment methods. Both scientific and tried and tested traditional treatments are presented, thus enabling the veterinarian or livestock practitioner to make the most appropriate choice in the prevailing circumstances. A section on procedures explains how to examine a camel, take samples for laboratory analysis and apply various types of medicines.

This book is the final one in a set of four providing a series on controlled reproduction in farm animals. The aim of the series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. The four volumes are effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, "Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals" (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes.Buffaloes, goats, deer and camelids have been added to the species covered by the series compared to the previous book. All volumes provide comprehensive reference lists and are fully up-to-date. This final volume focuses on horses, deer and camelids (camels, llamas and alpacas). All of these animals are attracting increasing attention for either leisure pursuits, meat or fiber production. The book will appeal to reproductive physiologists and workers in animal production, animal breeding and veterinary medicine.

--- EMS (extra-mural studies) are an essential element of undergraduate veterinary education. Students must complete a minimum of 38 weeks EMS during their course, which should normally consist of 12 weeks pre-clinical and 26 weeks of clinical placements, a large portion of which takes place on farms. -- The highly illustrated approach allows readers to see the highlighted differences rather than try to imagine what cases look like and differentiate them from written descriptions. -- A repository of over 1000 10-second video clips accompanies the book, accessible to students on the farm with a smart phone. Each clip uniqeuly shows the animal's clinical presentation, internal disease/imaging and then healthy recovery -- There are a limited number of common conditions seen by vets in farm animal practice and an exhaustive list of all known diseases is not needed: textbooks often include such diseases for the benefit of an academic reviewer rather than student and general practitioner readers. -- This concise guide offers a breath of fresh air among the existing hefty expensive large animal medicine tomes on the market. --- Some comments from veterinary students on the proposal: "I firmly believe that this would be a very useful book and only wish that it existed already for my clinical EMS"; "There are currently several 'pocket books' for small animal medicine such as the Mini Vet guide but nothing for farm animals"; "Using a small animal 'quick', ring-bound, reference guide on EMS has been extremely useful, and it would be very beneficial to have a large animal alternative"; "The author's suggested use of high quality illustrations is what a student desperately needs. At the end of the day we need to be able to work out many diseases with similar symptoms - this book would provide that where may other current textbooks do not. I would support this new book, and hope it is released before I go into exams in the future - as it is what I currently need help within revision like so many other students. It is what the veterinary student dreams of having, and yet no one has produced it!"
Almost every person working with horses will have studied equine
behavior to a certain extent. Understanding the flexibility and
limits of behaviour is essential to improving both the horse's
welfare and its performance. This book will enable students,
trainers, riders and horse owners to understand the fundamental
principles behind the behavior of horses and how to apply them in
different situations in practice. Part 1 looks at the constraints which apply to the modern horse
because of its evolutionary history and the nature of the
evolutionary process itself. Part 2 examines the processes and
mechanism which control the behaviour and responses of a horse and
explores the sources of individual variation, whilst Part 3 looks
at the effect of the environment on the horse's behaviour and
welfare. This includes a critical look at current and recent
training techniques such as 'imprint training and 'join up'. Here is a readable, scientific text expertly illustrated throughout the clarify the key concepts in equine behaviour.
The National Veterinary Medical Series (NVMS) is an effective,
economical system for learning and review. Basic and clinical
veterinary sciences are outlined in a practical format that enables
you to master large amounts of information in a limited amount of
time.
The new edition of Cattle and Sheep Medicine incorporates over 250 new clinical cases divided equally between cattle and sheep. The cases appear randomly to reflect real life practice and are presented as a set of integrated questions, photographs and detailed explanatory answers-to educate and not just to test. New images have been added for all cases and multiple choice questions are included for revision purposes. This second edition covers important clinical features of a range of common diseases of ruminants encountered in first opinion practice in a problem-based format. The book also contains many diseases not featured in the former edition. While common diseases are also again featured, the situations have been changed to mimic general practice, as a disease does not always manifest with the same clinical features. The diagnosis and treatment regimens described are those used by the author over the past 38 years in commercial large animal practice. They acknowledge the time and financial restrictions that occur in many situations, but require no specialised facilities or equipment.
Building on the successful structure of the first edition, the second edition of Reproductive Technologies in Farm Animals has been totally updated and revised to provide an up to date account of the key techniques employed in manipulating reproduction in farm animals, including beef and dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, buffaloes, camelids, horses and poultry. A classic introductory text to the subject, the book is based on a comprehensive review of the current literature. It: - outlines different agricultural systems and explores the ethical implications of modern farming methods; - details the many new developments, including the commercial application of sexed semen and large-scale application of in vitro produced cattle embryos; - provides a valuable synopsis of current and future reproductive technologies, such as cloning and the production of transgenic animals. This text remains key reading for students in animal science, agriculture, veterinary medicine and biology, and veterinary practitioners and farmers who wish to keep updated on developments in techniques that may be useful in their daily practice.
Swine can be infected with many different mycoplasmas. Some are important pathogens, causing significant health and welfare issues in pigs and major losses to the swine industry worldwide. Other mycoplasmas are not pathogenic for swine and can be considered commensals. This book provides up-to-date scientific, clinical and practical information of the most important pathogenic mycoplasmas in swine. Most emphasis has been placed on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae as the most economically important, but other pathogenic species like Mycoplasma hyorhinis, Mycoplasma hyosynoviae and Mycoplasma suis are also discussed. Written by internationally renowned scientists and clinicians from all over the world, this book draws together in depth knowledge, expertise and experience in swine mycoplasmas to provide an evidence-based, academically rigorous and practical collection. It aims to serve the scientific and veterinary community and the swine industry worldwide.
In February 2001, Foot and Mouth Disease arrived in Cumbria. At its peak Cumbria was the worst affected county in Britain with a staggering 41 per cent of all cases. For the local community, the environmental and social consequences were to prove devastating. As a local resident, leading UK photographer John Darwell found himself surrounded by the effects of the disease. Over the next twelve months, he committed himself to recording what was taking place. Despite government reports to the contrary, the Cumbrian countryside became largely a 'no-go area', whilst on the farms thousands of animals were destroyed, their bodies burnt on the now notorious pyres. The ultimate clean-up of the infected farms led to extraordinary lengths being taken to eradicate the virus. "Dark Days" represents, perhaps, the most complete record of this time and provides a powerful and emotive insight into one of the most dramatic and destructive periods in British farming history. It is published in association with Littoral Arts.

The symbiotic relationship of man and non-human animals is the result of a long intertwined history of the evolution of biological, social and cultural needs. This book explores the development of that relationship. The use, abuse, care, dedication and devotion that have been part of our history living with other animals. Complex, changing and with competing demands the issue of animal welfare can be seen as a `wicked' one, with poor animal welfare reflective of a poor system. The aim of this broad survey of animal welfare is to understand why those animal-keeping practices are the way they are and what we need to do to change them. This book will be of interest to researchers, workers and students of animal welfare and anyone interested in exploring the relationship of man and animals.

Nutrition is the key driver of animal health, welfare and production. In agriculture, nutrition is crucial to meet increasing global demands for animal protein and consumers' demands for cheaper meat, milk and eggs and higher standards of animal welfare. For companion animals, good nutrition is essential for quality and length of life. Animal Nutrition examines the science behind the nutrition and feeding of the major domesticated animal species: sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, deer, goats, pigs, poultry, alpacas, horses, dogs and cats. It includes introductory chapters on digestion and feeding standards, followed by chapters on each animal containing information on digestive anatomy and physiology, evidence-based nutrition and feeding requirements and common nutritional and metabolic diseases. Clear diagrams, tables and breakout sections make this text readily understandable, and it will be of value to tertiary students of animal nutrition and to practicing veterinarians, livestock consultants, producers and nutritionists.
This book provides both evidence-based scientific studies and practical guidance to enhance the welfare of cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry at slaughter. Temple Grandin and Michael Cockram have brought together a range of international experts to prepare chapters on philosophical and ethical views on the slaughter of farmed animals. These include welfare issues and their assessment, the condition of animals on arrival and their management during lairage, animal handling, methods of humane slaughter and assessment of unconsciousness. The book boldly tackles controversial issues around the compromises necessary when balancing animal welfare concerns with commercial realities, as well as religious slaughter. Chapters cover methods of stunning, pre-slaughter handling, equipment design, monitoring welfare with abattoir data and auditing methods. It is an important publication for those involved in implementing improvements in the humane slaughter of farmed animals and is recommended for veterinarians, students, abattoir managers and government regulators.
