Scotland's Swedish Adventure - The Story of Scotland's European Championship Debut (Hardcover): John Bleasdale Scotland's Swedish Adventure - The Story of Scotland's European Championship Debut (Hardcover)
John Bleasdale
R494 R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Save R44 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Scotland's Swedish Adventure is the definitive story of Scotland's journey into their first ever European Championship finals, in Sweden. Having qualified for five consecutive World Cup finals between 1974 and 1990, it was surprising the Scots hadn't yet reached the Euro finals given the array of talent at their disposal. Andy Roxburgh would soon change that, and after being drawn into the ultimate 'group of death' that included the reigning European and world champions, his side repeatedly put on brave performances against superior opposition to make the nation proud. Scotland's Swedish Adventure explores the story behind their road to qualification, with exclusive insight from some of the men who made this adventure happen, including Roxburgh himself, players, journalists and fans. That Scotland qualified for an eight-team tournament, and finished fifth in the overall standings, is an achievement that doesn't get the recognition and respect it deserves. This 30th anniversary tribute remedies that.

Richard H. Thomas
R436 R398 Discovery Miles 3 980 Save R38 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Cricket is defined by the characters who have played it, watched it, reported it, ruled upon it, ruined it and rejoiced in it. Humorous and deeply affectionate, Cricketing Lives tells the story of the world's greatest and most incomprehensible game through those who have shaped it, from the rustic contests of eighteenth-century England to the spectacle of the Indian Premier League. It's about W. G. Grace and his eye to his wallet; the invincible Viv Richards; and Sarah Taylor, 'the best wicketkeeper in the world . . . male or female'. Paying homage, too, to the game's great writers, Richard H. Thomas steers a course through the despair of war, tactical controversies and internecine politics, to reveal how cricket has always stormed back to warm our hearts as nothing else can.

Organizational Behavior in Sport Management - An Applied Approach to Understanding People and Groups (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Organizational Behavior in Sport Management - An Applied Approach to Understanding People and Groups (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Christopher R. Barnhill, Natalie L. Smith, Brent D. Oja
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This textbook presents a comprehensive analysis of organizational behavior in sport organizations from a practitioner's perspective. It covers issues related to managing employees and work teams as well as organizational structure and culture in sport. The book has four sections: Organizational Behavior in the Sports Industry, Getting to Know Employees and Volunteers of Sport Organizations, Work Groups and Teams, and Understanding the Organization. Each chapter begins with a practitioner interview describing a challenge that was overcome by their organization. That example is used to highlight applicable theories and interventions used in the industry. Additional examples or theories are discussed to provide students a broad picture of managerial issues in the sports industry and provide alternative approaches to intervention illustrated in the practitioner interview. The case studies offer the opportunity to practice and apply the ideas to real-world scenarios in the sports industry. Students using this book will gain an understanding of how managers and leaders apply theory to communicate with and engage employees to foster desired organizational cultures while being challenged to address common issues using cases and hypothetical situations.

London 2012 and the Post-Olympics City - A Hollow Legacy? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Phil Cohen, Paul Watt London 2012 and the Post-Olympics City - A Hollow Legacy? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Phil Cohen, Paul Watt
R1,778 Discovery Miles 17 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book brings together a body of new research which looks both backwards and forwards to consider how far the London 2012 Olympic legacy has been delivered and how far it has been a hollow promise. Cohen and Watt consider the lessons that can be learnt from the London experience and aptly apply them other host cities, specifically Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. The Olympics are often described as a 'mega-event' in a way that assumes the host cities have no other existence outside, before or beyond the contexts imposed by the Games themselves. In terms of regeneration, the London 2012 Olympics promised to trigger a mega-regeneration project that was different to what had come before. This time the mistakes of other large-scale projects like London Docklands and Canary Wharf would be put right: top-down planning would be replaced by civic participation, communication and 'the local'. This edited collection questions how far the 2012 London legacy really is different. In so doing, it brings fresh evidence, original insights and new perspectives to bear on the post-Olympics debate. A detailed and well-researched study, this book will be of great interest to scholars of urban geography, sociology, urban planning, and sports studies.

The Infant Motor Profile (Paperback): Mijna Hadders-Algra, Kirsten R Heineman The Infant Motor Profile (Paperback)
Mijna Hadders-Algra, Kirsten R Heineman
R989 Discovery Miles 9 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Infant Motor Profile is a practical manual on a new, evidence-based method to assess infant motor behaviour. Backed up by extensive, up-to-date research, it includes percentile curves so that professionals can easily interpret the infants' scores. The profile created from the assessment informs about the infant's current condition and their risk of developmental disorders, as well as providing suggestions for early intervention, tailored to the strengths and limitations of the infant. Used over time, it can be an excellent instrument to monitor the infant's developmental progress. Illustrated with numerous figures and accompanied by a website hosting over 100 video clips, this text is an essential read for professionals in developmental paediatrics, including paediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists, developmental paediatricians, neuropaediatricians, and paediatric physiatrists.

The Birth of the Ashes. The Amazing Story of the First Ashes Test (Paperback, 2nd edition): Christopher Hilton The Birth of the Ashes. The Amazing Story of the First Ashes Test (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Christopher Hilton
R377 R344 Discovery Miles 3 440 Save R33 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Here, for the first time, the Oval Test match of 1882 - every bit as dramatic as anything in the 2005 season - is recreated ball by ball all the way to the agonising climax when Australia won by 7 runs. Here, too, is the social context of that match, from the founding of Australia, spiced with a host of insights into how cricket was born and how it grew in a vast, rugged land. The story of The Ashes is more, much more. When the Hon. Ivo Bligh took an England team to Australia in 1882 - 83 he said he was going to reclaim the Ashes of English cricket, lost at the Oval. That led to a meeting with a property baron near Melbourne, an invitation for the team to stay at his mansion for Christmas - a knock-about match against the staff - and the baron's wife, who had a little urn on her mantelpiece. We know what went in it!

The Making of the Masters - Golf's Most Prestigious Tournament (Paperback, 1st Simon & Schuster trade pbk. ed): David Owen The Making of the Masters - Golf's Most Prestigious Tournament (Paperback, 1st Simon & Schuster trade pbk. ed)
David Owen
R473 Discovery Miles 4 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Masters. For any golf fan, the words evoke the immortal greats of the game and their quest for the most prized trophy of all -- the green jacket of Augusta National Golf Club.

But behind the legendary links and timeless traditions is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood figures in the history of the Masters and Augusta National: Clifford Roberts, the club's chairman from its founding in 1931 until shortly before his death in 1977. Roberts' meticulous attention to detail, his firm authoritarian hand, and his refusal to settle -- even for perfection -- helped build the Masters into the tournament it is today, and Augusta National into every golfer's idea of heaven on earth.

David Owen was granted unprecedented access to the archives and records of Augusta National Golf Club. He has produced an honest and affectionate chronicle of the Masters, from its conception to its modern greatness, and a fascinating portrayal of Clifford Roberts -- whose perseverance and pride forged the Augusta National we know today.

'The story of Brawn GP is legendary... Exciting and magical.' Damon Hill Foreword by Bernie Ecclestone ____________________________ The full story of F1's incredible 2009 championship battle has never been told. Until now. At the end of 2008, Nick Fry, then head of Honda's F1 team, was told by his Japanese bosses that the motor company was pulling out of F1. In response, Nick and chief engineer Ross Brawn persuaded Honda to sell them the company for GBP1 - a gamble that would take the team all the way to winning the 2009 Driver's and the Constructor's Championship with a borrowed engine, a heavily adapted chassis and, at least initially, no sponsors. Giving the inside track on the drivers, the rivalries, on negotiating with Bernie Ecclestone and on hiring and working with global superstars Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, Survive. Drive. Win. is a gripping memoir of how one man found himself in the driving seat for one of the most incredible journeys in the history of motor sport. 'Nick Fry and Ed Gorman take us behind the mysterious and tightly closed doors of F1 to tell the remarkable story of the 2009 season.' Martin Brundle

The Ideals of Global Sport - From Peace to Human Rights (Hardcover): Barbara J Keys The Ideals of Global Sport - From Peace to Human Rights (Hardcover)
Barbara J Keys
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Sport has the power to change the world," South African president Nelson Mandela told the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo in 2000. Today, we are inundated with similar claims-from politicians, diplomats, intellectuals, journalists, athletes, and fans-about the many ways that international sports competitions make the world a better place. Promoters of the Olympic Games and similar global sports events have spent more than a century telling us that these festivals offer a multitude of "goods": that they foster friendship and mutual understanding among peoples and nations, promote peace, combat racism, and spread democracy. In recent years boosters have suggested that sports mega-events can advance environmental protection in a world threatened by climate change, stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty in developing nations, and promote human rights in repressive countries. If the claims are to be believed, sport is the most powerful and effective form of idealistic internationalism on the planet. The Ideals of Global Sport investigates these grandiose claims, peeling away the hype to reveal the reality: that shockingly little evidence underpins these endlessly repeated assertions. The essays, written by scholars from many regions and disciplines and drawn from an exceptionally diverse array of sources, show that these bold claims were sometimes cleverly leveraged by activist groups to pressure sports bodies into supporting moral causes. But the essays methodically debunk sports organizations' inflated proclamations about the record of their contributions to peace, mutual understanding, antiracism, and democracy. Exposing enduring shortcomings in the newer realm of human rights protection, from the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games to Brazil's 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, The Ideals of Global Sport suggests that sport's idealistic pretensions can have distinctly non-idealistic side effects, distracting from the staggering financial costs of hosting the events, serving corporate interests, and aiding the spread of neoliberal globalization. Contributors: Jules Boykoff, Susan Brownell, Roland Burke, Simon Creak, Dmitry Dubrovsky, Joon Seok Hong, Barbara J. Keys, Renate Nagamine, Joao Roriz, Robert Skinner.

The Early Years of the FA Cup - How the British Army Helped Establish the World's First Football Tournament (Hardcover):... The Early Years of the FA Cup - How the British Army Helped Establish the World's First Football Tournament (Hardcover)

The 150th anniversary of the first FA Cup competition, the earliest knockout tournament in the history of football, will be celebrated during the 2021-2022 season. The first set of matches was played on 11 November 1871, with the Engineers reaching the final played at Kennington Oval on 16 March 1872. During the first decade of the competition three teams associated with the military, Royal Engineers, 1st Surrey Rifles and 105th Regiment, were involved in 74 matches. They won more than half of them and scored 154 goals. The Army also produced one of the most respected administrators in the history of football, in the form of Major Francis Marindin, who was involved in the founding of the FA Cup, played in two finals, and refereed a further nine. Military men and units provided a number of firsts' in the early years of football. The Royal Engineers played in the first ever FA Cup final; Lieutenant James Prinsep of the Essex Regiment was the youngest footballer to appear in an FA Cup final until 2004, although he remains the youngest to complete a full match; Lieutenant William Maynard of the 1st Surrey Rifles played for England in the first ever official international match against Scotland; Captain William Kenyon-Slaney of the Grenadier Guards scored the first ever goal in an official international match, while playing for England; and Lieutenant Henry Renny-Tailyour of the Royal Engineers scored the first ever goal for Scotland in the same match. At a time when there has been talk of a financially-motivated breakaway European Super League, James gives the reader the opportunity to look back at a time when football was played for the game itself. Using his vast knowledge concerning Victorian football and military history, _The Early Years of the FA Cup_ explores the fascinating history of the Army's involvement in the early years of the world's most popular sport. With detailed descriptions of the finals and other matches involving the military teams during football's heyday, this book, for the first time, then follows the men as they went on campaigns to build roads and bridges in hostile territory, provide maps for commanders in famous conflicts such as The Zulu War, Afghanistan, the Sudan, and the Boer Wars, and saw active service on the Western Front during the First World War. In some cases they never returned. Often great footballers are referred to as heroes' -in the case of the men who played for the Army teams in the early FA Cup competitions, such an epithet is genuinely true.

The Business of Sports Agents (Hardcover, Third Edition): Kenneth L. Shropshire, Timothy Davis, N Jeremi Duru The Business of Sports Agents (Hardcover, Third Edition)

R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Successful sports agents are comfortable with high finance and intense competition for the right to represent talented players, and the most respected agents are those who can deal with the pressures of high-stakes negotiations in an honest fashion. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire, Timothy Davis, and N. Jeremi Duru, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports, and stiffening requirements for licensing agents. This revised and expanded third edition brings the volume up to date on recent changes in the industry, including: -the emergence and dominance of companies such as Creative Artists Agency and Wasserman Media Group -high-profile cases of agent misconduct, principally Josh Luchs, whose agent certification was revoked by the NFLPA -legal challenges against the NCAA that may fundamentally change the definition of amateurism -changes to agent regulations resulting from new collective bargaining agreements in all of the major professional sports -evaluation of the effectiveness of the Uniform Athlete Agents Act (2000) to regulate agent conduct -issues faced by the increasing number of agents representing athletes who work abroad as well as athletes from abroad who work in the United States. Whether aspiring sports agent, lawyer, athlete seeking an agent, or simply interested in understanding the world of sports representation, the reader will find in The Business of Sports Agents the most comprehensive overview of the industry as well as a straightforward analysis of its problems and proposed solutions.
