Cyber Savvy - Embracing Digital Safety and Civility (Paperback, New): Nancy E. Willard Cyber Savvy - Embracing Digital Safety and Civility (Paperback, New)
Nancy E. Willard
R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cyber Savvy: Embracing Digital Safety and Citizenship provides guidance to educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement officers on how to effectively implement instructional activities to address issues of safety and citizenship with today's digital youth. The Cyber Savvy instructional approach is grounded in the understanding that the vast majority of young people want to make good choices, do not want to be harmed, and do not want to see their friends or others harmed. This instructional approach focuses on positive social norms, effective practices, and the positive engagement of witnesses. Concerns about the safety of young people online have been present since around 1995. At first filtering software was promoted at the way to "protect children." In the early 2000's the U.S. Department of Justice provided funding for several national organizations to create Internet safety curriculum material. Much of this material exaggerates the risks associated by "online strangers" and uses fear-based messaging. In 2008, Congress passed the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act. This Act added a provision to the Children's Internet Protection Act (the law that requires schools and libraries to install filtering in conjunction with E-Rate funding for technology). This new requirement is for schools to teach about Internet safety. The Federal Communication Commission has just issued regulations about the new requirement. Most school districts already know that they need to move in this direction. Some new curriculum will be coming into the market place - more can be expected. This book will address that need by describing the issues and suggested solutions so that school leaders, counselors, and teachers can provide a safe and productive online environment for their students. There has been so much inaccurate information presented, and still is, that is it exceptionally important that teachers gain research-based insight into the actual risks and recommendations grounded in effective risk prevention instruction. This book will provide that guidance.

Today's latest incarnation of The Big6 Workshop Handbook includes the Super3 process; using the Big6 to teach technology skills; integration with subject area curricula, assessment, and standardized testing; connecting with national, state, and school district standards; and micro and macro-level planning. Everyone from classroom teachers and teacher librarians to administrators and parents will find it invaluable. The book is divided into two sections. The first provides a background for teachers regarding what World Wide Web is, a brief history of the Web, using the Web with Students, and the research behind Web use in the classroom. This section is not an exhaustive coverage of these topics. Rather, it is meant solely to familiarize teachers with the Web. The second section of the book takes a more detailed approach. It is a step-by-step process guiding teachers through the design, development, and implementation process of the Web for use in the classroom. This process includes how to evaluate Web projects, how to manage Web projects, and how to integrate Web projects into the curriculum. Teachers will learn how to design Web sites and will be able to guide their students similarly through this process to develop student - created Web projects.

Teaching and Learning about Computers - A Classroom Guide for Teachers, Librarians, Media Specialists, and Students... Teaching and Learning about Computers - A Classroom Guide for Teachers, Librarians, Media Specialists, and Students (Hardcover)
Joanne R. Barrett
R2,646 Discovery Miles 26 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology provides ample opportunities for teachers to be learners, as well as for the learners to become the teachers. Sometimes, the most effective technology enabled classrooms are those where the instructor is the expert in the content area, and the students are the technology experts. Oftentimes it is with a great sense of pride that a student will show a teacher how to adroitly move about in an application. Designed for both instructors and students, this book teaches an array of computer applications while simultaneously allowing the user to become proficient in technological standards. Based on Joanne Barrett's notes and shortcuts from her years as a computer specialist and computer teacher, this all-inclusive hands-on guide will assist teachers and students in grades 5 through 12 who are using computers in the classroom. Explaining concepts and complicated processes in an understandable language, this complete instructional tool covers in one volume all of the computer topics that the teacher will encounter. Topics include: * Word processing * Spreadsheets * Creating charts and graphs * Databases * Multimedia presentations * The Internet * Web page design * Programming * Viruses and copyright issues

The Library-Classroom Partnership - Teaching Library Media Skills in Middle and Junior High Schools (Paperback, Second... The Library-Classroom Partnership - Teaching Library Media Skills in Middle and Junior High Schools (Paperback, Second Edition)
Rosann Jweid, Margaret Rizzo
R2,702 Discovery Miles 27 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of The Library-Classroom Partnership is to assist library teachers and classroom teachers to effectively use the library and its resources as an extension of the classroom. As in the earlier edition, the lessons included in this book stress the library media skills needed by individuals for lifelong learning. Long after adults have forgotten a particular fact of history or the techniques of balancing an equation, they continue to use library skills to answer their questions and to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It has been well documented that the skills taught in a library are most effectively learned within the context of classroom work. To this end, the librarian and the teacher must form a working team to take each other's ideas and develop them into effective learning experiences for students. The authors have incorporated the teaching of those library media skills with every discipline taught in the school. Through these lessons, students will realize that research and reference are a vital part of the learning process, complementing and enriching every subject. The eleven disciplines (English, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, home and careers, technology, physical education, health, and foreign language) normally taught in the junior high and middle schools are addressed in this work. To be included, a lesson must be a learning experience in both the library skills and the subject areas. Each unit has been cooperatively developed using the expertise of the school library media specialist and the subject teacher. All lessons have been implemented successfully in the junior high and middle school environment. This revised and expanded edition of The Library Classroom- Partnership also deals with technology and the changing economic and social conditions affecting public schools. It includes a new section on reading enrichment as well as instruction in accessing information electronically.

Computer Science Logo Style - Symbolic Computing (Paperback, second edition): Brian Harvey Computer Science Logo Style - Symbolic Computing (Paperback, second edition)
Brian Harvey
R1,536 Discovery Miles 15 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This series is for people-adults and teenagers-who are interested in computer programming because it's fun. The three volumes use the Logo programming language as the vehicle for an exploration of computer science from the perspective of symbolic computation and artificial intelligence. Logo is a dialect of Lisp, a language used in the most advanced research projects in computer science, especially in artificial intelligence. Throughout the series, functional programming techniques (including higher order functions and recursion) are emphasized, but traditional sequential programming is also used when appropriate. In the second edition, the first two volumes have been rearranged so that illustrative case studies appear with the techniques they demonstrate. Volume 1 includes a new chapter about higher order functions, and the recursion chapters have been reorganized for greater clarity. Volume 2 includes a new tutorial chapter about macros, an exclusive capability of Berkeley Logo, and two new projects. Throughout the series, the larger program examples have been rewritten for greater readability by more extensive use of data abstraction. In Volume 3 "Beyond Programming", the reader learns that computer science includes not justprogramming computers, but also more formal ways to think about computing, such as automata theory and discrete mathematics. In contrast to most books on those subjects, this volume presents the ideas in the form of concrete, usable computer programs rather than as abstract proofs. Examples include a program to translate from the declarative Regular Expression formalism into the executable Finite State Machine notation, and a Pascal compiler written in Logo. The Logo programs in these books and the author's free Berkeley Logo interpreter are available via the Internet or on diskette.
