Teaching Computational Thinking and Coding in Primary Schools (Hardcover): David Morris, Gurmit Uppal, David Wells Teaching Computational Thinking and Coding in Primary Schools (Hardcover)
David Morris, Gurmit Uppal, David Wells
R3,729 Discovery Miles 37 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a guide to the teaching of computing and coding in primary schools, and an exploration of how children develop their computational thinking. It covers all areas of the National Curriculum for primary computing and offers insight into effective teaching. The text considers three strands of computer science, digital literacy and information technology. The teaching of coding is especially challenging for primary teachers, so it highlights learning on this, giving practical examples of how this can be taught. For all areas of the computing curriculum the text also provides guidance on planning age-appropriate activities with step-by-step guides and details of educationally appropriate software and hardware. This book helps you to connect what you need to teach with how it can be taught, and opens up opportunities in the new curriculum for creative and imaginative teaching. It also includes the full National Curriculum Programme of Study for Computing, key stages 1 and 2 as a useful reference for trainee teachers.

Cyber Savvy - Embracing Digital Safety and Civility (Paperback, New): Nancy E. Willard Cyber Savvy - Embracing Digital Safety and Civility (Paperback, New)
Nancy E. Willard
R1,001 Discovery Miles 10 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cyber Savvy: Embracing Digital Safety and Citizenship provides guidance to educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement officers on how to effectively implement instructional activities to address issues of safety and citizenship with today's digital youth. The Cyber Savvy instructional approach is grounded in the understanding that the vast majority of young people want to make good choices, do not want to be harmed, and do not want to see their friends or others harmed. This instructional approach focuses on positive social norms, effective practices, and the positive engagement of witnesses. Concerns about the safety of young people online have been present since around 1995. At first filtering software was promoted at the way to "protect children." In the early 2000's the U.S. Department of Justice provided funding for several national organizations to create Internet safety curriculum material. Much of this material exaggerates the risks associated by "online strangers" and uses fear-based messaging. In 2008, Congress passed the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act. This Act added a provision to the Children's Internet Protection Act (the law that requires schools and libraries to install filtering in conjunction with E-Rate funding for technology). This new requirement is for schools to teach about Internet safety. The Federal Communication Commission has just issued regulations about the new requirement. Most school districts already know that they need to move in this direction. Some new curriculum will be coming into the market place - more can be expected. This book will address that need by describing the issues and suggested solutions so that school leaders, counselors, and teachers can provide a safe and productive online environment for their students. There has been so much inaccurate information presented, and still is, that is it exceptionally important that teachers gain research-based insight into the actual risks and recommendations grounded in effective risk prevention instruction. This book will provide that guidance.

Timothy D. Green, Abbie Brown, Leanne K. Robinson
R1,001 Discovery Miles 10 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book is divided into two sections. The first provides a background for teachers regarding what World Wide Web is, a brief history of the Web, using the Web with Students, and the research behind Web use in the classroom. This section is not an exhaustive coverage of these topics. Rather, it is meant solely to familiarize teachers with the Web. The second section of the book takes a more detailed approach. It is a step-by-step process guiding teachers through the design, development, and implementation process of the Web for use in the classroom. This process includes how to evaluate Web projects, how to manage Web projects, and how to integrate Web projects into the curriculum. Teachers will learn how to design Web sites and will be able to guide their students similarly through this process to develop student - created Web projects.

James Wright
R2,479 Discovery Miles 24 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

[This book is] absolutely wonderful. It will be my new Bible... I have used it loads already in preparation for my ICT Mark assessment. Taking on the role of ICT co-ordinator can be quite a daunting task but this step by step guide, breaking things down into manageable chunks will be very supportive. I love the blogging idea - the comments made by the characters are very realistic. This is just what new co-ordinators need, I wish I'd had this when I took over co-ordination of ICT! - Christine Beedham, Primary ICT adviser, Warrington Every primary school has the daunting task of embedding ICT and e-learning into their curriculum. This practical manual is the first part of a two volume set that together makes up a detailed two year training programme for primary ICT and e-learning co-ordinators. The books combine key strategies and information with a weblog discussion from a group of 'virtual' co-ordinators who share their problems, fears and successes over the two-year programme, based on the author's wide experience of working with new co-ordinators and experienced staff on training programmes and in general support. Book 1 is designed specifically for co-ordinators new to the role who need starting points and broad support. It presents a structured training programme split over three terms, guiding co-ordinators through the key stages of developing and implementing ICT policy and practice, including: o auditing existing school systems o reviewing and revising the school policy for ICT o reviewing the ways in which ICT is used as a teaching and learning tool across the curriculum o examining methods for the management of technical support services o establishing a clear overview of standards in ICT, including a review of assessment procedures, moderating work, monitoring teaching and learning and creating E Portfolios. The books have a companion website, which will offer downloadable versions of the photocopiable sheets from the book, as well as links to other sources of help and advice.

The Library-Classroom Partnership - Teaching Library Media Skills in Middle and Junior High Schools (Paperback, Second... The Library-Classroom Partnership - Teaching Library Media Skills in Middle and Junior High Schools (Paperback, Second Edition)
Rosann Jweid, Margaret Rizzo
R2,594 Discovery Miles 25 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The purpose of The Library-Classroom Partnership is to assist library teachers and classroom teachers to effectively use the library and its resources as an extension of the classroom. As in the earlier edition, the lessons included in this book stress the library media skills needed by individuals for lifelong learning. Long after adults have forgotten a particular fact of history or the techniques of balancing an equation, they continue to use library skills to answer their questions and to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It has been well documented that the skills taught in a library are most effectively learned within the context of classroom work. To this end, the librarian and the teacher must form a working team to take each other's ideas and develop them into effective learning experiences for students. The authors have incorporated the teaching of those library media skills with every discipline taught in the school. Through these lessons, students will realize that research and reference are a vital part of the learning process, complementing and enriching every subject. The eleven disciplines (English, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, home and careers, technology, physical education, health, and foreign language) normally taught in the junior high and middle schools are addressed in this work. To be included, a lesson must be a learning experience in both the library skills and the subject areas. Each unit has been cooperatively developed using the expertise of the school library media specialist and the subject teacher. All lessons have been implemented successfully in the junior high and middle school environment. This revised and expanded edition of The Library Classroom- Partnership also deals with technology and the changing economic and social conditions affecting public schools. It includes a new section on reading enrichment as well as instruction in accessing information electronically.
