This is a contemporary book that addresses global issues in
adolescent sexuality education. With chapters from international
experts in sexuality, this book provides comprehensive coverage of
issues including effective sexuality education, abstinence
programs, and risk prevention efforts, drawing on research
currently being conducted in schools and agencies across the globe.
Emphasising "developmentally appropriate sex education", readers
will learn about adolescents' preferences for sources of sex
education, as well as the timing and topics that are critical to
include. Given an increasing use of social media and technology by
teens, the book addresses the intersection of sexuality and
technology. This includes topics such as sexting and on line
victimisation, and youth exposure to sexually explicit on line
material. Strategies for both school and parents to implement to
safe guard their youth are provided. With the wealth of knowledge
from the international contributors to this book, culture and
diversity are addressed throughout but especially in chapters on
gender expansiveness, sexual minority youth, and youth with
disabilities. Recommendations are made for how schools can
implement sex education with adolescents in a way that will be
meaningful and effective. Adapting evidenced based curriculum to
local settings, as well as conducting evaluations is addressed so
that program planners can ensure adolescents are receiving accurate
and comprehensive knowledge and skills to make informed decisions.
The latter part of this book addresses the issue of the training
that is required of teachers who implement sexuality curriculums.
In order for programs to be successful, those who deliver them need
proper training and support. Readers of this book are sure to gain
essential knowledge necessary to design, implement and evaluate
inclusive and effective sexuality education with a large range of
youths.
This book discusses health education for children, particularly for
preschool and elementary age children. This area of health
education among children is very important because of a recent
increase in childhood health problems such as obesity and type-2
diabetes. All chapters are based on research on data collected on
the experiences of parents and teachers in childcare/preschools,
elementary schools, and on the author's personal experience as a
practitioner. The early years are the most important years in a
child's life and because of that, preschool health education should
not focus on teachers and children only, but should also help
parents as well. Based on the scholarly work in the area of health
education in the early years, the following recommendations are
made: Although teachers see health activities as important, some
teachers are focusing on personal health only; educators can do
better if they cover physical activity, nutrition, emotional health
issues, and other health-related topics in their classrooms.
Integrating physical activities in every facet of children's
classrooms will help curb some childhood health problems.
The author feels that your life is only as special or sacred as you
say it is. Therefore, one must find the joy in the everyday things
in life. Whether planting a tree with your dad, stirring the batter
for your birthday cake with your mom, or learning how to whistle,
it's easy to be happy if you love what you are doing.
Seven-year-old Sophie introduces readers to her grandmother, Bebe,
in a simple and true story of their relationship. She describes the
deep love they have for one another through the tragedy of Bebe's
quadruple amputations and shares of Bebe's ability to embrace life,
in spite of overwhelming obstacles. Readers eventually see that
focusing on appearances may result in missing out on the treasure
within the people you meet. It is a "must-see..".through the eyes
of a seven-year-old.
CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE was established by brothers Jeremiah West, 8,
and Joshua West, 6, young entrepreneurs with the two-fold objective
of improving childhood literacy and financial literacy, teaching
their peers how to give, save, and spend their money wisely. It is
their mission to empower youth of all ages, cultures, and
backgrounds to not only create their own income in the spirit of
entrepreneurship, but to serve as "Change Agents" who look for
opportunities to make an immediate and lasting impact within their
communities. Since its inception, this movement has grown to
creating "Change Agents" all across the world, from New York City
to as far away as Malaysia Join Jeremiah and Joshua on their
journey to change the world, one small deed at a time. Champions of
Change: Little Deeds. HUGE Impact.
A young girl learns the importance of honesty after lying to her
teacher about her homework. The little girl's lie unleashes an
awful Lie Monster that only comes out when you tell a lie. To save
herself from the Lie Monster, the little girl must learn to tell
the truth. Carty Tales are based on childhood experiences of the
author and the important moral lessons she learned. A great
teaching tool for children 5 to 12.
The At Issue series includes a wide range of opinion on a single
controversial subject. Each volume includes primary and secondary
sources from a variety of perspectives -- eyewitnesses, scientific
journals, government officials and many others. Extensive
bibliographies and annotated lists of relevant organizations to
contact offer a gateway to future research.
The childhood obesity epidemic and related health consequences are
urgent public health problems. Approximately one-third of America's
young people are overweight or obese. Health problems once seen
overwhelmingly in adults, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular
disease, and hypertension, are increasingly appearing in youth.
Though the health of Americans has improved in many broad areas for
decades, increases in obesity could erode these and future
improvements. The IOM report Accelerating Progress in Obesity
Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation recognized the
importance of the school environment in addressing the epidemic and
recommended making schools a focal point for obesity prevention.
The development and implementation of K-12 nutrition benchmarks,
guides, or standards (for a discussion of these terms, see the next
section of this chapter) would constitute a critical step in
achieving this recommendation. National nutrition education
curriculum standards could have a variety of benefits, including
the following: Improving the consistency and effectiveness of
nutrition education in schools; Preparing and training teachers and
other education staff to help them provide effective nutrition
education; Assisting colleges and universities in the development
of courses in nutrition as part of teacher certification and in
updating methods courses on how to integrate nutrition education in
subject-matter areas in the classroom and in materials; and
Establishing a framework for future collaborative efforts and
partnerships to improve nutrition education. Nutrition Education in
the K-12 Curriculum: The Role of National Standards is a summary of
the workshop's presentations and discussions prepared from the
workshop transcript and slides. This summary presents
