Good Questions Have Small Groups Talking (Paperback): Josh Hunt Good Questions Have Small Groups Talking (Paperback)
Josh Hunt
R330 Discovery Miles 3 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Which would you rather attend-a boring lecture or a lively small group discussion?
How do you turn some quiet bump-on-a-logs into a lively small group discussion?
Ever attended a group and the leader tried to create a lively small group discussion and it went badly? (How embarrassing for her and painful for us. Awkward.)
If you believe discussion is the best way to lead a small group, this book is for you. In this practical book you will learn the skillful use of twelve types of questions that have groups talking.
Hi, I am Josh Hunt, the author of Good Questions Have Groups Talking. I have written more small group lessons than any human, living or dead. I write four lessons a week and have done so for years. I have written literally thousands of lessons.
In this book I will walk you through, step-by-step, how I write small group lessons that have groups talking. (My lessons are called Good Questions Have Groups Talking.) Here are some of the lessons we will cover:
Life exposure question. This question is about the student, not about the Bible. It gets everyone started talking and allows the small group to get to know one another. Example: state your name and where were you in the birth order of your family?
What does the text say? Ask these fast. They are not as interesting as the ones that follow. Still, you have to know what the text says before you can understand what it means.
What does the text mean? This is classic Bible study. We need to spend some time here, but not too much.
Jump-ball question. This is the heart of the discussion. Truth is often a mid-point between two extremes. Jesus said, "be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men to be seen of them," and, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven" Question: are we to do our acts of righteousness publically so people can see?
What are ten ways we could apply this to our lives? Application questions are different from commitment. These are things you could do, not things you necessarily will do. Example: what are ten ways a man could express love to his wife?
How will it benefit me if I do? What will it cost me if I don't? These twin questions are based on this truth, explored at some depth in the book: it is always in our best interest to live the Christian life. God is good. Following Him is good. God is a rewarder. We cannot come to him unless we believe that. You must come to love the Christian life or you will never come to live the Christian life.
Commitment question: what do you want to do about what you heard today?
These are only half the questions discussed in the book. There are 12 types of questions in all that I explore.

The Believer's Daily Remembrancer - The Pastor's Morning Visit (Paperback): James Smith The Believer's Daily Remembrancer - The Pastor's Morning Visit (Paperback)
James Smith
R607 R551 Discovery Miles 5 510 Save R56 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The present humble work is a Pastoral effort, flowing from love to the Lord's people, and a desire to honour His great name. It is an acknowledged fact, that many of the Lord's people are living far below their privileges; and are walking as men, not aiming simply at the Lord's glory. This is to be regretted; and while none but the Lord the Holy Spirit can produce the change we desire to witness, yet the means are to be used, and we must stir up their pure minds by way of Remembrance. In this little work, I aim to speak in the closet, in the cottage, in the kitchen, and even in the field, to the different classes of the Lord's family; endeavouring to draw them nearer to their God and gracious Father. My desire is to promote the power of godliness; and these little pieces are written to convince, comfort, and correct; to fan the flame of devotion, and to produce holiness of heart and life. To this end some degrees of sameness in the pieces, and a repetition of some important truths, appeared absolutely necessary. Habitual dependence upon God for all we need, acknowledging the hand of God for all we receive, and walking with God, notwithstanding all that may happen to us below, enter into the very vitals of genuine Christianity; and it is only while we are thus acting that we enjoy peace with God, and walk in the comforts of the Holy Ghost. That the Lord, who often uses weak things to confound the mighty, may bless this little work to thy good and His glory."

Living the Christian Life (Paperback): Phanuel Muverengwi Living the Christian Life (Paperback)
Phanuel Muverengwi
R265 Discovery Miles 2 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

God does not expect a Christian to begin and end at the point of receiving salvation. The purpose of salvation is to usher one into the Kingdom of God. One needs to follow up their salvation with a continual personal development consistent with the new life. After birth, a baby should begin to crawl, then to stand, then to speak more distinctly, then to run and eventually grow into an adult. It is the same with the Christian. After one receives salvation, God expects them to develop, stage by stage, neither ceasing nor retracting. This is the only way one could enrich their Christian life. This is also how they could fortify it. The objective of this book is to motivate you to become a valuable Christian in the various spheres of your life. The book provides you with useful knowledge on how you could continuously develop yourself in this direction.

Ritual is a powerful binding force. From the bedtime routines that toddlers insist upon to the comic routines that leave outsiders puzzled, all groups, including families, shape their identities by the rites they observe. And, in the process, they discover that something holy lies at the heart of their relationships. Franciscan Father Rock Travnikar wants families and groups to discover that holiness and to claim a deeper identity as God's people. To aid in this discovery, he created prayer-rituals that are centered on a common cup and based on the use of Scripture and petition to help family or group members express their deepest feelings.

The Pursuit of God (Paperback): A.W. Tozer The Pursuit of God (Paperback)
A.W. Tozer
R321 Discovery Miles 3 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the introduction of The Pursuit of God, Samuel M. Zwemer says that this ..". is a book for every pastor, missionary and devout Christian. It deals with the deep things of God and the riches of His grace. Above all," says Zwemer, "it has the keynote of sincerity and humility." The Pursuit of God has become a true Christian classic. First published in 1948, the message is as new and vital and important today as it was then. If you'll look inside many of the Church bodies of today, you'll see exactly the same situation as that painted by Mr. Tozer. Upon publication, Tozer said, "This book is a modest attempt to aid God's hungry children so to find Him. Nothing here is new except in the sense that it is a discovery which my own heart has made of spiritual realities most delightful and wonderful to me."

In biblical terms, mantle is the equivalent of legacy. Henri's Mantle takes its name from the mantle that fell from Elijah to Elisha, passing on spiritual strength and wisdom. Henri Nouwen's mantle consists of more than 40 books -- many on how to cultivate a spiritual life -- that he has passed on to his readers. Glaser, a student and friend of Nouwen for over 25 years, interprets Nouwen's sacred writings and presents 100 meditations on his words, in the hope that Nouwen's ministry will continue to thrive. Glaser covers a wide range of topics that will uplift and encourage spiritual seekers, and the result is a touching, accessible book on the inner struggles of the spiritual life.

Each meditation is divided into a portion of Nouwen's writings, a reflection on Nouwen's insights, and a brief prayer.

People tell us it is too late to warn of dangers, too late to give the final message to the world, too late to expect others to respond to the pleadings of the Word of God as are presented to them. Oh my friends, it is not too late. We must strive and urge and plead and warn until the very day that probation ends for mankind. We are to live the Enoch life This is our commission. And this is a twofold work: to develop a character of righteousness by living a life of personal purity and pleading with God and to teach a lesson of godliness by kindly acts and warning and pleading with men.

Spiritual Direction (Paperback): Martin Thornton Spiritual Direction (Paperback)
Martin Thornton
R544 R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Save R94 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Synopsis: Here at last is a book that deals seriously and comprehensively with the rapidly growing field of spiritual direction. Spiritual Direction offers practical help to those clergy and laypersons who are responsible for the spiritual lives of other people. Spiritual Direction encourages spiritual directors to take their responsibilities seriously and professionally, moving spiritual direction away from cozy little chats to the cold, hard slab of the examining table. Equipped with certain skills--a keen knowledge of human psychology and an awareness of biblical and contemplative traditions--the spiritual director objectively examines the client, then offers concrete guidance for the spiritual life of the client. As a prominent figure in pastoral theology and Anglican spirituality for three decades, Martin Thornton is uniquely qualified to offer us insights into spiritual direction. He restores credibility and professionalism to spiritual direction, which is at once hard, analytical, and supportive. Thornton writes with wit, common sense, and an absence of sentimentality on a topic that calls for serious attention. Spiritual Direction is important reading for the increasing numbers of laypeople involved in spiritual direction, as well as for clergy and pastoral counselors. Author Biography: Martin Thornton (1915-1986) was an Anglican priest and spiritual director, author and lecturer on ascetical theology. He was active for much of his life in the Diocese of Truro, England.
