and aims to refamiliarise a wider readership with the Spanish exile
of 1939. It provides new perspectives on the work of canonical
figures of this exile, such as Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, Jose
Bergamin, Pedro Salinas, Francisco Ayala, Emilio Prados, Federico
Garcia Lorca or Maria Zambrano, and brings to the fore the work of
less-studied figures like Jose Diaz Fernandez, Juan David Garcia
Baca, Ernesto Guerra da Cal, Nuria Pares, Maria Luisa Elio, Maria
Teresa Leon and Tomas Segovia. Rather than being disparate, this
broad scope, which ranges from first generation to second
generation exiles, from Galicia to Andalusia, from philosophers to
poets, is testament to the wide-ranging impact of the Spanish
Republican exile.
This fine edition of Cicero's treatises on the topics of
friendship, old age and life contains the respected translation of
E. S. Shuckburgh. Written in the second century A.D., these
writings encapsulate the wisdom and ability possessed by their
author. Already well into maturity, it is here that the accumulated
experience of a man who had - in an illustrious career of public
service in the Roman Empire - seen and known all manner of events
and people in his bustling society. The attributes important to
friendship are identified by Cicero as he discusses the qualities a
good friend should have. There are several intractable virtues of
friendship, which must be preserved lest the union be damaged. The
second treatise elaborates upon what it is to be old. Writing so as
to echo the much esteemed Cato the Elder, the beauty and profundity
of the words in this essay are significant. The clear and plain yet
succinct and wistfully eloquent words elaborate on aging and the
concerns that arrive with it.

Philosophy in a Meaningless Life provides an account of the nature
of philosophy which is rooted in the question of the meaning of
life. It makes a powerful and vivid case for believing that this
question is neither obscure nor obsolete, but reflects a
quintessentially human concern to which other traditional
philosophical problems can be readily related; allowing them to be
reconnected with natural interest, and providing a diagnosis of the
typical lines of opposition across philosophy's debates. James
Tartaglia looks at the various ways philosophers have tried to
avoid the conclusion that life is meaningless, and in the process
have distanced philosophy from the concept of transcendence.
Rejecting all of this, Tartaglia embraces nihilism ('we are here
with nothing to do'), and uses transcendence both to provide a new
solution to the problem of consciousness, and to explain away
perplexities about time and universals. He concludes that with more
self-awareness, philosophy can attain higher status within a
culture increasingly in need of it.
In this thesis the author firstly investigates various terms
related to tathagatagarbha in the Srimalasutra. Secondly he focuses
on the languages features of its Sanskrit fragments in the Schoyen
Collection. It turns out that none of their noticeable language
features can ultimately suggest the school-affiliation of the
Srimalasutra. Thirdly he analyzes its paleographical features.
Besides, the author conducts an initial study of textual history
the Srimalasutra, and discusses the older recension(s) of the
Srimalasutra based on the Sanskrit morphology, criteria of lectio
difficilior and lectio facilior, ascertainment of later contents in
the course of transmission, and the development of Buddhist
doctrine. Finally he provides a careful textual collation, and
makes an annotated translation.
