Antifragile - Things that Gain from Disorder (Paperback): Nassim Nicholas Taleb Antifragile - Things that Gain from Disorder (Paperback)
Nassim Nicholas Taleb 2
R411 R337 Discovery Miles 3 370 Save R74 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

'Really made me think about how I think' - Mohsin Hamid, author of Exit West Tough times don't last. Tough people do. In The Black Swan, Taleb showed us that highly improbable and unpredictable events underlie almost everything about our world. Here Taleb stands uncer tainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary. The antifragile is beyond the resilient or robust. The resil ient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better and better. Just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension, many things in life benefit from stress, disorder, volatility, and turmoil. What Taleb has identified and calls antifragile are things that not only gain from chaos but need it in order to survive and flourish. Antifragile is a blueprint for living in a Black Swan world. Erudite, witty, and iconoclastic, Taleb's message is revolutionary: the antifragile, and only the antifragile, will make it. 'The hottest thinker in the world' Bryan Appleyard, Sunday Times

Handbook of Philosophy of Education (Paperback): Randall Curren Handbook of Philosophy of Education (Paperback)
Randall Curren
R3,107 Discovery Miles 31 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book features chapters on timely, emerging, and global issues, such as campus speech, racial and linguistic justice in education, climate education, neoliberalism in education, the future of higher education, international educational testing, educational problems of mass migration, and educational justice for working children across the world It addresses fundamental questions of educational theory and policy, such as the nature of educational justice, the roles of evidence and values in educational decision-making, the basis for prioritizing some educational aims over others, and widely-discussed educational aims such as human flourishing and global citizenship. The volume reflects important developments on both the epistemic (knowledge-focused) and value-focused (ethical, justice-related, and moral-developmental) wings of philosophy of education, and the ways these come together in important problems of civic life - especially, the polarization of public life and breakdown of public (i.e., shared) knowledge, and questions about how schools can do their jobs in a world in which controversy rages over things that are often matters of strong scientific consensus. In this regard, a particularly valuable aspect of the volume is its attention to the educational and civic importance of both virtues of mind (intellectual or epistemic virtues) and the ways in which epistemic virtues and vices interact with disciplinary knowledge, networks of epistemic trust and reliance, and the ways we teach. Relevant chapters here include ones on Mind, Reason, and Knowledge; Understanding as an Aim of Education; Cultivating Intellectual Virtues; Intellectual Character Education; Free Speech and Education; Democratic Education and the Controversy over Controversial Issues; College Teaching, Indoctrination, and Trust; and Climate, Science, and Sustainability Education. The volume reflects the increasing importance of multidisciplinary approaches in philosophy of education, and the relevance of many subfields of philosophy to philosophical work on education. Multidisciplinary approaches and developments in related subfields of philosophy allow contemporary philosophy of education to address new and important questions in compelling ways. This is evident throughout the volume. The chapters are authored by some of most distinguished philosophers writing on education today, and many of them also bring to their topics deep experience in educational and policy leadership. These authors include: Danielle Allen (a policy thought leader and currently candidate for Governor of Massachusetts), Harry Brighouse (who has done extensive education policy work), Nancy Cartwright (the world's leading philosopher of science and an international thought leader on the uses of social science in public policy), Ann Cudd (Provost at the U of Pittsburgh), Daniel Weinstock (one of Canada's leading public philosophers and contributors to policy debates), Sigal Ben-Porath (who has been consulted extensively by universities across the US when controversies have erupted over free speech), and Yuli Tamir (a former Minister of Education of Israel and university president).

International Law, Necropolitics, and Arab Lives - The Legalization of Creative Chaos in Arabia (Hardcover): Khaled Al-Kassimi International Law, Necropolitics, and Arab Lives - The Legalization of Creative Chaos in Arabia (Hardcover)
Khaled Al-Kassimi
R3,858 Discovery Miles 38 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International Relations and International Law continue to be accented by epistemic violence by naturalizing a separation between law and morality. What does such positivist juridical ethos make possible when considering that both disciplines reify a secular (immanent) ontology? International Law, Necropolitics, and Arab Lives emphasizes that positivist jurisprudence (re)conquered Arabia by subjugating Arab life to the power of death using extrajudicial techniques of violence seeking the implementation of a "New Middle East" that is no longer "resistant to Latin-European modernity", but amenable to such exclusionary telos. The monograph goes beyond the limited remonstration asserting that the problematique with both disciplines is that they are primarily "Eurocentric". Rather, the epistemic inquiry uncovers that legalizing necropower is necessary for the temporal coherence of secular-modernity since a humanitarian logic masks sovereignty inherently being necropolitical by categorizing Arab-Islamic epistemology as an internal-external enemy from which national(ist) citizenship must be defended. This creates a sense of danger around which to unite "modern" epistemology whilst reinforcing the purity of a particular ontology at the expense of banning and de-humanizing a supposed impure Arab refugee. This book will be of interest to graduate students, scholars, and finally, practitioners of international relations, political theory, philosophical theology, and legal-theory.

Jessica Datema, Angie Voela
R3,691 Discovery Miles 36 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Movement, Velocity, and Rhythm from a Psychoanalytic Perspective: Variable Speed(s) explores philosophical and psychoanalytic theories, as well as artworks, that show sensible bodily rituals for reviving our social and subjective lives. With a wide range of contributors from interdisciplinary backgrounds, it informs readers on how to find rituals for syncing ourselves with others and world rhythms. The book is divided into three parts on variability, speed, and slowness, and explores rhythmic rituals of renewal, revolution, and reflection. Each chapter provides unique examples from the applied arts, film, television, and literature to show how different practices of rhythm might aid in creative and deep contemplation and includes philosophical and cultural theories for bodily and rhythmic renewal. Without being limited to a clinical perspective, this book provides wide-ranging discussions of the relation between rhythm, trauma, cultural studies, psychosocial studies, continental philosophy, critical psychology, Lacan, and film, to explore modes of becoming more attuned to each moment, to others, and to our own era. Movement, Velocity, and Rhythm from a Psychoanalytic Perspective will be essential reading for Lacanian psychoanalysts in practice and in training, as well as anyone interested in rhythm at the intersection of Lacanian psychoanalysis and continental philosophy.

Cultural Pragmatism for US-China Relations - Breaking the Gridlock and Co-creating Our Future (Hardcover): Charles Chao Rong... Cultural Pragmatism for US-China Relations - Breaking the Gridlock and Co-creating Our Future (Hardcover)
Charles Chao Rong Phua
R3,838 Discovery Miles 38 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Thucydides trap and a US-China face-off are not structurally inevitable; US-China relations are what the US and China make of them. Phua focuses on the ability to see "US as US" and "China as China" to trigger both countries' cultural tendencies towards pragmatism. Phua examines China's arduous journey to fit in the Westphalian system, the deep cultural misunderstandings by the West of Sunzi's The Art of War, and attempts to offer an inside-out cultural synthesis of classical and modern Chinese thought as a proxy of their operational code, beyond the standard cliches about Confucian and Daoist thought. He builds on Jervis' perception and misperception as well as Alastair Johnston's cultural realism. Readers will benefit from a culturally-Chinese, western-educated and politically neutral understanding of "China as China". An essential primer for academics, practitioners and students of international relations, diplomacy and Chinese culture.

The Magic of Technology - The Machine as a Transformation of Slavery (Hardcover): Alf Hornborg The Magic of Technology - The Machine as a Transformation of Slavery (Hardcover)
Alf Hornborg
R3,854 Discovery Miles 38 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines our understanding of technology and suggests that machines are counterfeit organisms that seem to replace human bodies but are ultimately means of displacing workloads and environmental loads beyond our horizon. It emphasises that technology is not the politically neutral revelation of natural principles that we tend to think, but largely a means of accumulating, through physically asymmetric exchange, the material means of harnessing natural forces to reinforce social relations of power. Alf Hornborg reflects on how our cultural illusions about technology appeared in history and how they continue to stand in the way of visions for an equal and sustainable world. He argues for a critical reconceptualisation of modern technology as an institution for redistributing human time, resources, and risks in world society. The book highlights a need to think of world trade in other terms than money and raises fundamental questions about the role of human-artifact relations in organising human societies. It will be of interest to a range of scholars working in anthropology, sociology, economics, development studies, and the philosophy of technology.

Philosophy And The Computer (Paperback): Leslie Burkholder Philosophy And The Computer (Paperback)
Leslie Burkholder
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The contributors set out to demonstrate the influence of the computer - not just in the philosophy of mind, where the influence has been enormous, but also in epistemology, metaphysics, logic and the philosophy of mathematics. Even ethics and ethical reasoning have been explored through the use of the computer. Indeed, the lead contribution by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon argues that it is no exaggeration to speak of a computational turn in philosophy to match the much-celebrated (and maligned) linguistic turn of a previous generation. Of particular interest are the examinations of the wide range of applications of computational methods, the innovative instructional computer programs, and the discussions of the ethical implications of computer use.

Wes Jackson, Robert Jensen
R684 R578 Discovery Miles 5 780 Save R106 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Confronting harsh ecological realities and the multiple cascading crises facing our world today, An Inconvenient Apocalypse argues that humanity’s future will be defined not by expansion but by contraction. For decades, our world has understood that we are on the brink of an apocalypse—and yet the only implemented solutions have been small and convenient, feel-good initiatives that avoid unpleasant truths about the root causes of our impending disaster. Wes Jackson and Robert Jensen argue that we must reconsider the origins of the consumption crisis and the challenges we face in creating a survivable future. Longstanding assumptions about economic growth and technological progress—the dream of a future of endless bounty—are no longer tenable. The climate crisis has already progressed beyond simple or nondisruptive solutions. The end result will be apocalyptic; the only question now is how bad it will be. Jackson and Jensen examine how geographic determinism shaped our past and led to today’s social injustice, consumerist culture, and high-energy/high-technology dystopias. The solution requires addressing today’s systemic failures and confronting human nature by recognizing the limits of our ability to predict how those failures will play out over time. Though these massive challenges can feel overwhelming, Jackson and Jensen weave a secular reading of theological concepts—the prophetic, the apocalyptic, a saving remnant, and grace—to chart a collective, realistic path for humanity not only to survive our apocalypse but also to emerge on the other side with a renewed appreciation of the larger living world.

Calamity Theory - Three Critiques of Existential Risk (Paperback): Joshua Schuster, Derek Woods Calamity Theory - Three Critiques of Existential Risk (Paperback)
Joshua Schuster, Derek Woods
R267 Discovery Miles 2 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What are the implications of how we talk about apocalypse? A new philosophical field has emerged. "Existential risk" studies any real or hypothetical human extinction event in the near or distant future. This movement examines catastrophes ranging from runaway global warming to nuclear warfare to malevolent artificial intelligence, deploying a curious mix of utilitarian ethics, statistical risk analysis, and, controversially, a transhuman advocacy that would aim to supersede almost all extinction scenarios. The proponents of existential risk thinking, led by Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom, have seen their work gain immense popularity, attracting endorsement from Bill Gates and Elon Musk, millions of dollars, and millions of views. Calamity Theory is the first book to examine the rise of this thinking and its failures to acknowledge the ways some communities and lifeways are more at risk than others and what it implies about human extinction. Forerunners: Ideas First is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital publications. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship.

Music and Human Flourishing (Paperback): Anna Harwell Celenza Music and Human Flourishing (Paperback)
Anna Harwell Celenza
R751 Discovery Miles 7 510 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

It has long been accepted that participating in music, either as a performer, listener, or composer, can contribute to human happiness and well-being. This volume, part of The Humanities and Human Flourishing series, explores a fourth musical activity—the act of music scholarship—and reveals how engagement with the cultural, social, and political practices surrounding music contributes to human flourishing in a way that listening, performing, and even composing alone cannot. Music and Human Flourishing contains essays by eleven prominent scholars representing the fields of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. The essays are divided into three general categories and cover a broad range of topics and music traditions. In Part I, Contemplation, contributors explore a specific facet of music's connection to human flourishing and contemplate new approaches for future action. Part II, Critique, contains essays that challenge past assumptions of the various roles of music in society and highlight the effects that unconscious bias and stereotyping have had on music's effectiveness to facilitate human flourishing. Part III, Communication, features essays that explore how ethnicity, gender, religion, and technology influence our ability to connect with others through music. Collectively, these essays demonstrate how the process of thinking and writing about music and human flourishing can lead to revelations about cultural identity, social rituals, political ideologies, and even spiritual transcendence.

Practising the Symbolic - Pierre Bourdieu's Contribution (Hardcover): Sheena Jain Practising the Symbolic - Pierre Bourdieu's Contribution (Hardcover)
Sheena Jain
R3,847 Discovery Miles 38 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A powerful theory of the symbolic embedded within a remarkable and original theory of practice is a nodal aspect of the work of Pierre Bourdieu, who was a leading social thinker of our times (1930-2002). Against the backdrop of the significance of symbolic practice in social life, this book explains the intellectual warp and woof of his theory of the symbolic; presents a brief excursus that explores its potential to illuminate social contexts other than those in which it was conceived; examines its links with Bourdieu's role of social critic and public intellectual; and engages critically with scholarly assessments of his contribution. The book thus seeks to provide a comprehensive and in depth analysis and understanding of a central dimension of Bourdieu's work.

The Referential Mechanism of Proper Names - Cross-cultural Investigations into Referential Intuitions (Hardcover): Jincai Li The Referential Mechanism of Proper Names - Cross-cultural Investigations into Referential Intuitions (Hardcover)
Jincai Li
R4,138 Discovery Miles 41 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Each of us bears a unique name given to us at birth. When people use your name, they typically refer to you. But what is the linkage that ties a name to a person and hence allows it to refer? Li's book approaches this question of reference empirically through the medium of referential intuitions. Building on the literature on philosophical and linguistic intuitions, she proposes a linguistic-competence-based account of referential intuitions. Subsequently, using a series of novel experiments, she investigates the variation of referential intuitions across different cultures, as well as the developmental trajectory and the underlying causes of the observed cultural differences. What she finds is that the cultural patterns of referential intuitions are already in place around age seven, and the differences are largely attributable to the distinct perspective-taking strategies favoured by easterners and westerners, rather than the moral valence of actions involved in the experimental materials. These results are taken to better support referential pluralism (in particular, the ambiguous view) than referential monism. By undertaking this fascinating research, Li's book provides new insights into the cognitive mechanism underlying people's referential usage of names. It will be valuable to students and scholars of linguistics, philosophy of language and experimental philosophy, and in particular, to those who research into semantic intuitions and theories of reference.

De-Centering Global Sociology - The Peripheral Turn in Social Theory and Research (Hardcover): Arthur Bueno, Mariana Teixeira,... De-Centering Global Sociology - The Peripheral Turn in Social Theory and Research (Hardcover)
Arthur Bueno, Mariana Teixeira, David Strecker
R4,141 Discovery Miles 41 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume explores the challenges posed to sociological theory and social science research by a growing need to foreground perspectives stemming from, and accounting for, subaltern groups, marginal categories, the Global South, and other politically peripheral regions. De-Centering Global Sociology radically questions some of the most enduring assumptions within sociological thought and social science research and illustrates the impacts of de-centering critical concepts in public policy and education. It proposes new places to build social theory, beyond Europe and the United States, offering debates on the present and future of the social sciences. This peripheral turn also has impacts on the development of pedagogical practices, curricula, and educational research that are more inclusive, and in a position to promote global citizenship. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers and academics with an interest in global social theory, decolonial and postcolonial studies, political theory, feminism, critical race theory, economic sociology, inequality studies, urban sociology, and the sociology of work, religion, and education. It will be of particular interest to those with a focus on citizenship, social policy, conviviality, social integration and solidarity, and new perspectives on multicultural education.

Norman K Swazo, Tasmia Nower, Sk Tawfique M Haque, Md. Mahbubul Haque
R632 Discovery Miles 6 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a history of the ethnic persecution of the Rohingyas in Myanmar and their disputed ethnic and national identity. It focuses on how the crisis has morphed into a geopolitical encounter among Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar. It further explores the moral, ethnographic, and public policy issues in the humanitarian response to the crisis of the Rohingya people. The volume analyzes the question of citizenship for the Rohingyas by analyzing historical documents and interviews which chronicle the status and identity of the community and their past involvement in the government and politics of Myanmar. The authors focus specifically on the changing geopolitical context of state formation in South Asia and the tense relationships between Myanmar and its neighbours - Bangladesh, China, and India. The book examines the alliances and disputes in the South and Southeast Asia region, which are predicated on economic and strategic gains, and their impact on the Rohingya crisis. It also looks at the failure of bilateral and multilateral negotiations among these countries to adequately address or alleviate the plight of the stateless Rohingyas. This volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of international studies, peace, human rights and conflict studies, sociology, ethnic studies, border studies, migration and diaspora studies, discrimination and exclusion studies, public policy, and Asian Studies. It will also be useful for professionals working in the media, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), think tanks, and policy makers, as well as general readers interested in the history of the persecution of the Rohingya people.

To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand against the backlash toward religion spawned by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

A Little History of Philosophy (Paperback): Nigel Warburton A Little History of Philosophy (Paperback)
Nigel Warburton 1
R349 R318 Discovery Miles 3 180 Save R31 (9%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it. In forty brief chapters, Nigel Warburton guides us on a chronological tour of the major ideas in the history of philosophy. He provides interesting and often quirky stories of the lives and deaths of thought-provoking philosophers from Socrates, who chose to die by hemlock poisoning rather than live on without the freedom to think for himself, to Peter Singer, who asks the disquieting philosophical and ethical questions that haunt our own times. Warburton not only makes philosophy accessible, he offers inspiration to think, argue, reason, and ask in the tradition of Socrates. A Little History of Philosophy presents the grand sweep of humanity's search for philosophical understanding and invites all to join in the discussion.

Ethnomethodology, Conversation Analysis and Constructive Analysis - On Formal Structures of Practical Action (Hardcover):... Ethnomethodology, Conversation Analysis and Constructive Analysis - On Formal Structures of Practical Action (Hardcover)
Graham Button, Michael Lynch, Wes Sharrock
R4,157 Discovery Miles 41 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book revisits the arguments by which Harvey Sacks and Harold Garfinkel opposed the widespread attempt in the social sciences to construct disciplinary theories and methods in place of common-sense knowledge of human action, and proposed instead an alternative that would investigate the organised methods of natural language use and common-sense reasoning that constitute social orders - arguments that led to the establishment and proliferation of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. As the very "constructive analysis" that they opposed has begun to be incorporated into influential lines of research in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, the authors return to the founding insights of the field and reiterate the importance of Garfinkel and Sacks' original and controversial proposals for an "alternate" sociology of practical action and practical reasoning. Showing how constructive analysis has become entrenched in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis and arguing for a need to "re-boot" these approaches, this volume constitutes a call for a renewal of the radical alternative proposed by Garfinkel and Sacks.
