'Tis the season to be jolly ... but not always. Some holiday
hearts are a stark contradiction to the merriment the season
brings. What began in 1991 as Cheryl Berger's personal gift to
family and friends has grown into the collection you now hold in
your hands. These inspirational writings have been included in her
family's annual Christmas cards with the hope of bringing the
recipients a little holiday cheer.
Tidings of Comfort and Joy contains more than just seasonal
entries, however. Some have to do with situations, circumstances,
as well as the unexpected, experienced in everyday life. Bible
verses have been woven like a scarlet thread throughout each piece.
Some pieces are personal, and some were written for others. All
were written with the purpose of encouraging hearts with the hope
found in Christ.
Realizing the Lord speaks to her heart through her writing, many
hours have been spent seeking God for a word in due season. With a
heart for hurting women, Cheryl uses words to minister hope and
peace to wounded and broken hearts. If you listen carefully, you
can hear songs of hope flowing throughout each piece. It is her
prayer that the Lord will use the imagery penned in this collection
to fill your heart with tidings of comfort and joy.

Ephesians tells us what God has given to us by grace, because of
His own devotion toward His family, to involve us in His glory.
Unlike the other epistles, Ephesians does not chide the Church for
anything. It is concerned with informing us about the richness of
eternal life and inheritance that has been bestowed on us by the
generosity of God. Ephesians gives us a unique look at the heart of
God and how marvelously He has set it up for us in His family and
His Kingdom to share in His wisdom, His power, and His love because
that is what He wanted to do. We have not deserved it and we have
not invoked it by our actions or our faith. God has done it all
because it pleased Him to do it. We are accepted in the beloved
family of God because He has made us to be accepted. Ephesians
proceeds to tell us what this language means in terms of our lives
and relationship to God now. The magnitude of this grace and glory
is staggering:
... is a collection of Christian poetry. This book shares my belief
and faith in God, in prayer and in praise. I was a soul struggling
for sanity. Thinking my life defeated, to Him - God - I wholly
retreated. He enabled me to weather the storm. I hope my poetry
will lift the spirit of readers in bleak hours, and encourage them
to enjoy the beauty of this great world, and accept God's
invitation to everlasting life. I would like to relate that God is
always there to steer a fate if one in patience, in faith, in
prayer -- wait. Ruby Dell Ross, Author
Reflection
If I change the way I look at things
The things I look at change
I think that's why the Bible seems
So changeable and strange
His word is like a magic mirror
Reflecting each man's heart
What I see in what I read
Depends on where I start
What I see depends in part
On what I think I know
Do I trust in my own thoughts
Or do I want to grow
I listen to the word of God
And hear what it should say
Conform it to my paradigms
And justify my way
And thinking I have seen the truth
I just see my reflection
A god who looks a lot like me
A god of self deception

Emmanuel Swedenborg's guide to the afterlife, and the importance of
the human connection to God, remains one of the most celebrated
Enlightenment-era works on the subject. Originally published in
Latin during the mid-18th century, Swedenborg's treatise contains
rich allusions not merely to the realms of the afterlife, but also
to the principles of Christianity. The nature of marriage, an
argument against polygamy, and the concept of a spirit world, and
how spiritual matters influence human will, are some of the notions
raised by Swedenborg that render his thoughts enchanting. According
to Swedenborg, the entirety of this text was inspired after he had
received a divine revelation from God himself. This was simply the
notion that God is the very essence of love in the universe, and
that His divine force intends for every human being to go to
heaven. He never descends into anger or hatred, and the traversal
of every human spirit into heaven was His intention by the very act
of Creation.

Jervis Sharp Zimmerman was born in Harvey, Illinois in 1922. He
graduated from the University of Illinois with High Honors in
English and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Thereafter he prepared
for the Christian ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary in
Chicago and was ordained in 1945 by the Presbytery of Chicago. He
subsequently earned a Master's degree in counseling psychology at
the University of Chicago. In 1953, after studying at Berkeley
Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut he was ordained deacon
and priest by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut in
which he continues serving. From 1954 to l967 he was Rector of
Christ Church, West Haven, Connecticut where Oliver Prescott served
in l866 and l867. It was this fact which sparked the author's
interest in Prescott which led to this biography. Prescott was an
early and ardent advocate for the Catholic revival in the Episcopal
Church. As a priest he was in constant difficulty with his bishop,
both for his doctrine and his liturgical usage. With his protege,
Charles Grafton, he was an early member of the Society of St.John
the Evangelist, the first modern monastic community for men in the
Church of England.
