Presenting papers from two International Lychnological Association
(ILA) Round Tables, this volume provides an extensive look at the
technological development of lighting and lighting devices during
Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages in Western Europe and Byzantium.
A time of major economic, geopolitical and social changes, there
were also radical modifications in lighting devices, as terracotta
mold-made lamps, very common throughout the earlier days of the
Roman Empire, were replaced by devices that used glass containers
to hold oil, candles made of beeswax, and metals to create a wide
variety of holders for the newer glass lamp vessels and candles.
Discussions included such diverse subjects as lighting devices used
in medieval times in Scandinavian mines, the Byzantine use of light
for long-distance signaling, castle illumination, polykandela
designs and the spiritual significance of light. The scholars used
as their source material not only artifacts from museums and
excavated contexts, but also written sources and depictions of
lighting devices on mosaics, frescos, icons, textiles and
manuscripts to help complete their notions about lighting in these
eras. The majority of the twenty-nine papers published in this
volume were presented at the third International Round Table under
the title 'Dark Ages? History and archaeology of lighting devices
in Continental Europe, from late Antiquity to late Medieval Ages'
in Olten, Switzerland in September 2007 and at the fourth
International Round Table under the title 'Lighting in Byzantium'
in Thessaloniki, Greece in October 2011. In many cases the length
of each paper is a clear reflection of how little or well-studied
the presented topic is. A few discussions on some artifacts dated
after 1500 AD are included because they represent and reflect the
technological evolution of lighting related to the Middle Ages.
Both ILA Round Tables considered the use of lighting devices in
everyday and ecclesiastical life and discussed their many aspects,
including their terminology, typology, chronology, manufacturing
techniques, and symbolic functions. The great breadth of lighting
technologies available in those 'Dark Ages' becomes apparent
through the diversity of the discussions, which reflect the great
variety of materials used to create lighting devices.
In the climate-controlled buildings of today, moisture problems affect not only the useable life expectancy of the structure, but the comfort and health of the occupants. This reference is the first to apply up-to-date moisture control and treatment techniques in a problem/solution format. Opening with an introductory explanation of the nature and causes of mold, mildew, and condensation, the book gives specific advice on heated, cooled, and combination environments, plus a short course in the dynamics of moisture movement within buildings. Other invaluable coverage includes: - clear, detailed recommended practices for all United States climates
- practices for cooling as well as heating climates (often, heating climate solutions are applied in cooling climates, where problems and solutions are completely different)
- an overall, systematic view of moisture problems—including how mechanical systems and occupant lifestyles can create and also resolve moisture problems
- actual case studies of buildings with moisture problems that illustrate the principles and practices presented in the book
This detailed, no-nonsense exploration of moisture cause and effect—as well as its protection and remediation—will expand readers’ knowledge on this crucial subject. Moisture Control Handbook will be welcomed by building contractors, architects, mechanical engineers, building science researchers, building product manufacturers, homeowners, and small commercial building owners.
Managern, diskutiert. Hierauf und auf einer Analyse der typischen
Struktur eines (grossen) Bauprojekts aufbauend, wird ein
Vergabemodell entwickelt, das einerseits den Risiken der
Baubeteiligten Rechnung tragt, andererseits dem Bauherrn die
erforderliche Flexibilitat belasst. So kann er in einem
kompetitiven Umfeld ein seinen Vorstellungen bezuglich Kosten,
Qualitaten und Terminen entsprechendes Bauvorhaben realisieren.
This book introduces magnetic bearings--mechatronic devices that
produce contact-free electromagnetic force to support a load, such
as a moving train or a spinning rotor. Compared to traditional
bearings, magnetic bearings offer several advantages: no friction,
low heat generation, no required lubrication, quiet operation, and
fast and stable rotation. For these reasons, magnetic bearings have
been used in rotary ventricular assist devices (VADs) to increase
design life, reduce or eliminate material wear and bearing
maintenance, as well as to increase biocompatibility by eliminating
high fluid stresses and heat generation, both of which are
associated with hemolysis, platelet activation and aggregation, and
thrombus growth. The book covers the principles of these bearings,
how they are used in integrated control and electronics systems,
and useful information on several major brands of current assist
devices.
Principles of Tropical Air Conditioning is written with the humid
tropics in mind. It is intended to meet the syllabus of the Higher
National Diploma (HND) or equivalent professional examinations in
Building Services Engineering. It is also designed to cover the air
conditioning course content of the new Bachelor of Engineering (B.
Eng) degree approved by the National Universities Commission. It is
specifically focused in providing design data for tropical air
conditioning system design and provides illustrative examples that
can give young practitioners enough information to evaluate air
conditioning and refrigeration cooling loads and equipment
selection with minimum supervision. In addition, Principles of
Tropical Air Conditioning serves as quick reference source
containing useful design data and parameters often required by the
practicing engineer.
