In order that the argument may be sufficiently clear in every part, Lapponi deemed it advisable to begin with the narration of certain historical facts bearing on hypnotism as well as on spiritism. He speaks of the facts peculiar to hypnotism and spiritism, indicating when necessary the authorities which prove, at least in part, their objective existence. He then examines the analogy and the difference between the two kinds of facts so far placed on record. Contents: hypnotism; spiritism; details about hypnotism; phenomena proper to spiritism; analogy and difference between hypnotic and spiritistic phenomena; on the nature of hypnotism and its manifestations; on the nature of spiritism and its relative manifestations; effects of hypnotic and spiritistic practices; conclusions.

From the 1830s to the Civil War, Americans could be found putting each other into trances for fun and profit in parlors, on stage, and in medical consulting rooms. They were performing mesmerism. Surprisingly central to literature and culture of the period, mesmerism embraced a variety of phenomena, including mind control, spirit travel, and clairvoyance. Although it had been debunked by Benjamin Franklin in late eighteenth-century France, the practice nonetheless enjoyed a decades-long resurgence in the United States. Emily Ogden here offers the first comprehensive account of those boom years. Credulity tells the fascinating story of mesmerism's spread from the plantations of the French Antilles to the textile factory cities of 1830s New England. As it proliferated along the Eastern seaboard, this occult movement attracted attention from Ralph Waldo Emerson's circle and ignited the nineteenth-century equivalent of flame wars in the major newspapers. But mesmerism was not simply the last gasp of magic in modern times. Far from being magicians themselves, mesmerists claimed to provide the first rational means of manipulating the credulous human tendencies that had underwritten past superstitions. Now, rather than propping up the powers of oracles and false gods, these tendencies served modern ends such as labor supervision, education, and mediated communication. Neither an atavistic throwback nor a radical alternative, mesmerism was part and parcel of the modern. Credulity offers us a new way of understanding the place of enchantment in secularizing America.
Antagonism has always existed between the two types of hypnotherapist - those with medical or psychological training and those without. The author believes the best way to achieve an understanding between them is through an agreement on training, which this book explores.

Describes Milton Erickson's contribution to practical psychotherapy. The text presents the actual approaches, methods and techniques Erickson developed that would enable people to use their own experiences to change behaviour.
More than any other individual, Milton Erickson has been responsible for shaping the modern view of hypnosis. His great contribution came from his ability to locate an individual's innter resources for coping creativley with the real problems of everyday life. Erickson himself endured two bouts of polio and was in a wheelchair throughout much of his later life. He learned to use the healing methods of self-hypnosis to deal with his handicaps and uncover ways of experiencing living at more profound levels. His delight in teaching these methdos of self-healing are clearly shown in these transcriptions of his seminars, workshops and lectures. Volume III contains much of the source material wherein Erickson first expressed his original views on psychosomatic medicine and healing. Here we learn hwo the languages of the mind communicate with the languages of the body. His research validates the view that psyche, mind, and brain are pervasively integrated in modulating body processes in health and illness. The 'miracle cures', spontaneous remissions of lethal diseases, and placebo effects, which seemed inexplicable to the scientific mind until recently, can how be understood as manifestations of mind-body information systems that extend far beyond the limitations formerly placed on the central nervous system.

When most people think of "hypnosis" they imagine either a sinister, Mesmeresque figure declaring to his subject "you're getting sleepier and sleepier ... your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier, you vill go into trance," or an entertainer compelling a subject to "cluck like a chicken." In this comprehensive introduction to hypnosis based on the pioneering work of Milton H. Erickson, Bill O'Hanlon demystifies the concept of "trance" and "hypnosis." He goes to the heart of the subject by answering the question: "What is trance?" But be forewarned: This is no dry, formal discourse on trance induction techniques. Rather, readers are invited to share the experience of attending one of O'Hanlon's lively and popular two-day workshops on Ericksonian hypnosis. In an energetic and often humorous manner, O'Hanlon takes his audience through the basics of trance induction and explains the how, what, and why of hypnosis. Readers familiar with Erickson's work will be delighted at the author's Class of Problems/Class of Solutions approach, which deconstructs Ericksonian interventions and provides a powerful new tool in directing clients toward solution. Each individual element of trance induction is explained clearly, through the use of case examples, demonstrations, and audience participation exercises. The book's gradual approach takes readers through the hypnotic process in a step-by-step fashion, increasing their skills and confidence.
"This is an essential primer of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and strategicpsychotherapy. [ ] O Hanlon provides threads that crystallize practicalpatterns useful to clinicians at all levels of expertise." Jeffrey K.Zeig, Ph.D., Director, The Milton H. Erickson Foundation

Stephen Gilligan's Generative Trance offers a framework for developing a more creative consciousness and lays out the step-by-step processes by which this can be done. William James used to say that `the unconscious mind is the horse and conscious mind is the rider: it's the relationship between the two that is most important.' In Generative Trance renowned trainer Stephen Gilligan shows you how to harness this relationship for a much more powerful and effective therapeutic intervention, and reveals how life can be lived as a great journey of consciousness. Emphasizing that reality and identity are constructed by ourselves, Gilligan explains how generative trance is crucial in creating new realities and possibilities for clients. It is a view that differs markedly from the traditional hypnosis ideas of a client losing control, as well as from Ericksonian approaches that feature a benevolent hypnotist who bypasses the conscious mind to work with a client's unconscious mind. Instead, generative trance stresses a `disciplined flow' process in which a person's conscious and unconscious minds cooperate to weave a higher consciousness capable of transformational change. Suitable for individuals who want to live life as a creative journey, as well as for professionals working with clients in such ventures. |
