The Challenge of Teaching - Through the Eyes of Pre-service Teachers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... The Challenge of Teaching - Through the Eyes of Pre-service Teachers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Gretchen Geng, Pamela Smith, Paul Black
R3,614 Discovery Miles 36 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents thirty-one accounts by final-year pre-service teachers, providing guidance and insights for less advanced teacher education students, and illustrating the use of life history and narrative stories as methods for pre-service teachers to explore educational issues in classroom practice. This life-history approach identifies those political, economic, and social forces that have impinged on the individual at different points in their life and contributed to the process of changing their identities. These stories are not written by established specialists in the areas they deal with, but instead by novice teachers at the beginning of their paths towards mastering the intricacies of teaching and learning in school settings. As such the book provides a mentoring framework and a means of helping pre-service teachers share their valuable experiences and insights into aspects such as how to manage practicum requirements. It helps establish a supportive relationship among pre-service teachers, providing them with access to valuable peer experiences. In addition it helps pre-service teachers make sense of their own practicum experiences and reflect on their own beliefs and professional judgement to develop their approaches and solve problems in their own classroom practice.

Continuing Professional Education in Australia - A Tale of Missed Opportunities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original... Continuing Professional Education in Australia - A Tale of Missed Opportunities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Barrie Brennan
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a history of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the Australian context. It presents an approach that links the development of CPD to a series of 'missed opportunities' and the identification of three key themes (mandatory CPD, competencies and regulation/registration) as well as with national regulation for select health professions. It not only relates the evolution of CPD in Australia but also serves as a guide to examining the situation in other countries and the emergence of CPD in individual professions. CPD has been provided for many decades, but it has not been rated as a 'high priority' or a key area of provision and has not been the focus of discussions or disputes in the higher education sector or in vocational education circles. Nevertheless in describing CPD's development, evidence is presented that CPD has made a significant contribution to the broad field of vocational education.

Integration of Vocational Education and Training Experiences - Purposes, Practices and Principles (Paperback, Softcover reprint... Integration of Vocational Education and Training Experiences - Purposes, Practices and Principles (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Sarojni Choy, Gun-Britt Warvik, Viveca Lindberg
R3,641 Discovery Miles 36 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book draws on experiences from a range of vocational education systems in different nation states and re-examines the purpose of providing experiences outside educational institutions; the kinds and extent of those experiences; and efforts made to ensure the integration of students' experiences across sites. Analyses of the various vocational education systems, their purposes and practices across nations, and challenges experienced by different stakeholders illustrate different approaches to the integration of learning at different sites. The book includes a consideration of what constitutes the integration and reconciliation of experiences, and their attendant educational implications. This extends an appraisal of the concepts of integration, reconciliation, curriculum and work readiness, each of which has a range of connotations. Integration or reconciliation is differentiated from transfer of learning, which is commonly based on simple assumptions that the educational institutions will provide theory and that the workplaces will provide practice from the workplaces, and that the two can be easily linked by students. The contributions from different nation states clearly demonstrate that integration is a collaborative process and requires the agency of stakeholders operating at global, national and specific learning site levels.

Mellita Jones, Karen McLean
R2,628 Discovery Miles 26 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume sheds light on debates about personalised learning in teacher education by exploring the popular emergence of personalising learning in education and hence its significance in teacher education in the 21st century. It examines personalising learning theory and explores the tenets of this theory and its recent trends in international settings. The theory is explored in relation to both general and higher education pedagogy, and in a range of examples within a teacher education context. The examples from practice provide insights into maximising the potential for personalising learning theory to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in teacher education. The book includes case studies involving pre-service teachers working in communities of practice with one another, with schools and with the wider community. Examples of technology for personalising learning are also described. All the case studies demonstrate how the learner is made central to the teaching and assessment approaches adopted and contributes to a lifelong learning continuum. Providing insights into a new pedagogy for teacher education that leads to an enriched student experience, the book presents a model for personalising learning in teacher education that offers support for 21st century teacher educators.

Skills for Human Development - Transforming Vocational Education and Training (Hardcover): Lesley Powell, Simon McGrath Skills for Human Development - Transforming Vocational Education and Training (Hardcover)
Lesley Powell, Simon McGrath
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Focusing on reimagining the purpose of vocational education and training (VET) and grounded in the reality of a small cohort of young South Africans and an institution seeking to serve them, Skills for Human Development moves beyond the inadequacies of the dominant human capital orthodoxy to present a rich theoretical and practical alternative for VET. Offering a human development and capability approach, it brings social justice to the forefront of the discussion of VET's purpose at the national, institutional and individual levels. In doing so, this book insists that VET should be about enlarging peoples' opportunities to live a flourishing life, rather than simply being about narrow employability and productivity. It argues that human development approaches, while acknowledging the importance of work in its broadest sense, offer a better way of bringing together VET and development than the current human capital-inspired orthodoxy. Offering a transformative vision for skills development, this book: Considers the potential contribution skills development could make to broader human development, as well as to economic development Points to an alternative approach to the current and flawed deficit assumptions of VET learners Presents for the first time an alternative evaluative frame for judging VET purpose and quality Presents a timely account of current vocational and education training that is high on the agenda of international policymakers Taking a broad perspective, Skills for Human Development presents a comprehensive and unique framework which bridges theory, policy and practice to give VET institutions a new way of thinking about their practice, and VET policymakers a new way of engaging with global messages of sustainable human development. It is a vital resource for those working on the human development and skills approach in multiple disciplines and offers a grounding framework for international policymakers interested in this growing area.

Pedagogy and Partnerships in Innovative Learning Environments - Case Studies from New Zealand Contexts (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Pedagogy and Partnerships in Innovative Learning Environments - Case Studies from New Zealand Contexts (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Noeline Wright, Elaine Khoo
R3,480 Discovery Miles 34 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines contexts and possibilities in Aotearoa New Zealand education contexts arising from the international trend for open, flexible, innovative learning environments (ILE), specifically on the pedagogical load. The book responds to questions such as: What does it mean to teach, learn or lead in an innovative learning environment? What happens when teachers move form single cell learning spaces to open, collaborative ones? The chapters provide examples of how teaching in new spaces can be an exciting challenge for teachers and students where they try new ways of teaching and learning, and rethink the purposes of learning and the implications of societal change for learning and what is valued. Examples are drawn from pre-service teachers working in primary and secondary schools and in-service teachers learning to become professionals. The book offers insights into a variety of educational contexts where teachers and students learn and adapt to new learning spaces, and also how different teaching and learning partnerships may be conceived, and flourish. It focuses attention on a range of aspects that teachers, school leaders, and other educators, and researchers may find valuable when they embark on similar initiatives to consider issues pivotal to productive and effective innovative learning environment design, development and implementation.

Reflective Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Robyn... Reflective Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Robyn Brandenburg, Kathryn Glasswell, Mellita Jones, Josephine Ryan
R4,353 Discovery Miles 43 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a detailed examination of reflective practice in teacher education. In the current educational context, where reflective practice has been mandated in professional standards for teachers in many countries, it analyses research-based evidence for the power of reflective practice to shape better educational outcomes. The book presents multiple theoretical and practical views of this often taken-for-granted practice, so that readers are challenged to consider how factors such as gender and race shape understandings of reflective practice. Documenting approaches that enhance learning, the contributions discuss reflective practice across the globe, with a focus on pre-service, in-service and university teachers. At a time when there is pressure to measure teachers' work through standardised tests, the book highlights the professional thinking that is integral to teaching and demonstrates ways it can be encouraged in beginning teachers. Aimed at the international community of teacher educators in schools and universities, it also includes a critical examination of methodological issues in analysing and evaluating reflective practice and showcases the kind of reflective practice that empowers teachers and pre-service teachers to make a difference to students.

Methodologies of Mediation in Professional Learning (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Lily... Methodologies of Mediation in Professional Learning (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Lily Orland-Barak, Ditza Maskit
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book critically explores the use of nine recognized methodologies for the mediation of professional learning in the context of teacher education: The story, the visual text, the case, the video, the simulation, the portfolio, lesson study, action research, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Drawing on theories of mediation and professional learning, the book establishes connections between theoretical, empirical and practical-based aspects of each of these methodologies. It consolidates a body of knowledge that offers a holistic portrayal of these methodologies in terms of their purposes (what for), processes (how), and outcomes (what), both distinctively and inclusively. Each chapter offers four perspectives on each methodology (1) theoretical groundings of the genre (2) research-based evidence on methodologies-as-pedagogies for mediating teacher learning (3) mediation tasks for teacher education as reported in studies and (4) a synthesis of recurrent themes identified from selected books and articles, including a comprehensive list of publications organized by decades. The last chapter presents an integrative framework that conceptualizes connections and weak links across the different methodologies of mediation.

The Europeanisation of Vocational Education and Training (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Christine... The Europeanisation of Vocational Education and Training (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Christine Ante
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the impact on EU member states of intensified European cooperation in the field of vocational education and training. By employing the Varieties of Capitalism approach as an analytical framework, it seeks to bridge diverging views from an innovative standpoint: While many experts argue that EU policies liberalize national training systems in spite of being 'soft law', Varieties of Capitalism argues that these polices do not produce a convergence of national institutions. The book maintains that European instruments such as the European Qualifications Framework and the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training are indeed biased towards liberal training regimes. On the basis of case studies on Germany, the Netherlands and England, it shows that the initiatives were implemented in line with national training systems. Thus, European soft law does not lead to a convergence of training regimes - or, as the book posits, of welfare states in general.

Professional Error Competence of Preservice Teachers - Evaluation and Support (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Eveline Wuttke, Jurgen... Professional Error Competence of Preservice Teachers - Evaluation and Support (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Eveline Wuttke, Jurgen Seifried
R1,837 Discovery Miles 18 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses competence, teacher competence, and professional error competence of teachers, and emphasizes the need for a training programme that supports the latter. The book starts out by presenting results from previous studies that underline the necessity to train professional error competence of teachers, especially in the field of accounting. The studies analysed include research in the field of accounting, and on the efficacy of teacher training. Next, considerations on training programmes are presented. From these analyses, a training programme was designed to support professional error competence in accounting. This training programme aims for increased knowledge about students' errors (content knowledge) and offers strategies to handle these errors (pedagogical content knowledge). Both are central facets of professional error competence. The book describes the development, characteristics, implementation, and evaluation of this programme. It details the test platform that was developed and used for the assessment of professional error competence, and critically discusses the results from the evaluation of the training programme from various perspectives. The current discussion on teacher training and expertise is influenced by empirical results obtained in international large-scale studies such as PISA and TIMSS. The findings of the studies underpin the discussion on teaching quality and teachers' professional competences. The key issue is that teacher competence has an impact on teaching quality and this, in turn, influences students' achievements. International comparative studies reveal that teachers often lack central competence facets, and therefore it is assumed that standard teacher training programmes may fail to successfully prepare student teachers for their tasks. Therefore, customized training programmes are currently being discussed. Their focus is mostly on pedagogical content knowledge and classroom practices, because these competence facets are essential for teaching quality.

'Girl Power' - Girls Reinventing Girlhood (Paperback, New edition): Dawn H. Currie, Deirdre M Kelly, Shauna Pomerantz 'Girl Power' - Girls Reinventing Girlhood (Paperback, New edition)
Dawn H. Currie, Deirdre M Kelly, Shauna Pomerantz
R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

'Girl Power': Girls Reinventing Girlhood examines the identity practices of girls who have grown up in the context of 'girl power' culture. The book asks whether - and which - girls have benefited from this feminist-inspired movement. Can girls truly become anything they want, as suggested by those who claim that the traditional mandate of femininity - compliance to male interests - is a thing of the past? To address such questions, the authors distinguish between 'girlhood' as a cultural ideal, and girls as the embodied agents through which girlhood becomes a social accomplishment. The book identifies significant issues for parents and teachers of girls, and offers suggestions for 'critical social literacy' as a classroom practice that recognizes the ways popular culture mediates young people's understanding of gender. 'Girl Power' will be of interest to researchers of contemporary gender identities, as well as educational professionals and adult girl advocates. It is relevant for students in gender studies and teacher-education courses, as well as graduate student researchers.

Designing Powerful Training: The Sequential Iterative Model (Paperback): M Milano Designing Powerful Training: The Sequential Iterative Model (Paperback)
M Milano
R1,803 Discovery Miles 18 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"An excellent, comprehensive, and very practical guide for training design.
--Beverly Popek, director of human resources, professional & consulting services, MCI Telecommunications

The answer is here. The heart of this book is the Sequential-Iterative Model (SIM) for training design. A fancy term for a simple, elegant concept: training should be a step-by-step process with a feedback loop that enables you to continually refine your training based on experience.

"You will not find another book that so thoroughly examines the process of creating training events. For anyone who wants to do quality design work, this book is highly recommAnded."
--Mel Silberman, author of Active Training and 101 Ways to Make Training Active

This book is a tool to help you design training that is:

  • Effective: Accomplishing specific objectives that aim toward success
  • Efficient: Meeting training objectives without wasting time or energy
  • Engaging: Involvin g learners and incorporating their experience into the training

You get checklists and evaluations to guide your development process. Out of their many years of experience, Milano and Ullius have created a practical guidebook that enables you to structure training so it is fluid and adaptable. Many guides to instructional design are stuffy, academic, and difficult to apply to the real world. Not so with Designing Powerful Training. This book is easy to approach and visually refreshing, with over 70 figures and illustrations!

You'll receive an overview of training basics, including:

  • Identifying the central characteristics of adult learners
  • Recognizing the essential skills for instructional design
  • Conducting a simple and quick needs assessment . . . and much more!

Next, the authors introduce you to the revolutionary SIM design. This design guides you through:

  • defining training goals and objectives
  • designing a big-picture outline for your training program
  • refining your outline to create a detailed training process
  • selecting media for your training events
  • evaluating the success of your designs.

"I like this book! The [SIM] gives me the connection between training design and organizational performance needs I have been looking for in other books."-- Joseph A. Greenberg, professor of higher education administration, The George Washington University

An essential piece of the puzzle is the running example that the authors follow throughout the book. This is where the rubber meets the road. You see the SIM in action and you recognize how you'll make it work for you.

Simulation Training: Fundamentals and Applications - Improving Professional Practice Through Simulation Training (Paperback,... Simulation Training: Fundamentals and Applications - Improving Professional Practice Through Simulation Training (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Philippe Fauquet-Alekhine, Nane Pehuet; Foreword by Rene Amalberti, Leplat
R1,963 Discovery Miles 19 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on decades of industrial experience, this insightful and practical guide uses case studies and an interdisciplinary perspective to explain the fundamentals of simulation training to improve performance of high-risk professional activities. It seeks to identify those conditions under which simulation training has been shown to improve professional practice while employing extensive real examples. Simulation Training: Fundamentals and Application helps readers to develop their own synthesis of the simulation learning method and to use such training to enhance their skills and performance. Case studies demonstrate five specific theatres of professional practice - the nuclear-power industry, aeronautics, surgery, anesthesia and metallurgy - and then detailed analysis highlights the common factors and key results. The author's background as a Human Factors Consultant, Physicist and Physiologist has enriched studies of humans in work situations, work organization and management and he has also been involved in pedagogical conception of experimental training on simulators based on his experience as a safety expert on nuclear power plant. The book is useful to practitioners, researchers and students, both in industry and in university. It is clearly cross disciplinary as it presents and discusses applications in engineering, professional practice (airline pilots) and medicine.

International Business Ethics - Focus on China (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Stephan Rothlin,... International Business Ethics - Focus on China (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Stephan Rothlin, Dennis McCann
R4,337 Discovery Miles 43 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses an essential need felt by many who seek to promote best business practices in China and East Asia - namely the need for culturally appropriate instructional materials (basic information, case studies and ethical perspectives) that will allow managers and entrepreneurs to understand and embrace the challenge of moral leadership in business. In an era characterized by globalization and the increasing importance of the economies of China, India, Japan and SE Asia, international business ethics must reflect the concerns of the people living and working in this area, the moral and spiritual traditions that have nurtured them and their specific contributions to sustainable development. This book presents twenty important case studies, taken from newsworthy events of the past few years, in which Asians and others have attempted to respond to this challenge. Each case study has been selected and shaped in order to highlight various aspects of doing business in Asia, starting with basic principles and moving on to the specific responsibilities that businesses have towards their various stakeholders. The authors contend that the best way to appreciate the relevance of Asian moral and spiritual traditions is to determine their specific contribution to virtue ethics, where the ancient traditions of both East and West converge in their focus on the qualities of moral leadership that form the basis of best business practice. Exploring the case studies will enable readers to appreciate the continued relevance of these ethical perspectives in Asian business. Best business practice clearly involves learning to do business and playing the game according to the rules; but the necessity of playing by the rules is not likely to become clear until one takes up the path that leads to a virtuous life in business, developing a moral character chiefly based on integrity.

The Body in Professional Practice, Learning and Education - Body/Practice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... The Body in Professional Practice, Learning and Education - Body/Practice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Bill Green, Nick Hopwood
R2,285 Discovery Miles 22 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The body matters, in practice. How then might we think about the body in our work in and on professional practice, learning and education? What value is there in realising and articulating the notion of the professional practitioner as crucially embodied? Beyond that, what of conceiving of the professional practice field itself as a living corporate body? How is the body implicated in understanding and researching professional practice, learning and education? Body/Practice is an extensive volume dedicated to exploring these and related questions, philosophically and empirically. It constitutes a rare but much needed reframing of scholarship relating to professional practice and its relation with professional learning and professional education more generally. It takes bodies seriously, developing theoretical frameworks, offering detailed analyses from empirical studies, and opening up questions of representation. The book is organized into four parts: I. 'Introducing the Body in Professional Practice, Learning and Education'; II. 'Thinking with the Body in Professional Practice'; III. 'The Body in Question in Health Professional Education and Practice'; IV. 'Concluding Reflections'. It brings together researchers from a range of disciplinary and professional practice fields, including particular reference to Health and Education. Across fifteen chapters, the authors explore a broad range of issues and challenges with regard to corporeality, practice theory and philosophy, and professional education, providing an innovative, coherent and richly informed account of what it means to bring the body back in, with regard to professional education and beyond.

Demand-Driven Approaches in Vocational Education and Training - A Case Study of Rural Population in South India (Paperback, 1st... Demand-Driven Approaches in Vocational Education and Training - A Case Study of Rural Population in South India (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Muthuveeran Ramasamy
R1,993 Discovery Miles 19 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Muthuveeran Ramasamy shows that the formal way of vocational education and training (VET) in rural areas often ignores the illiterate, the less educated, and the poor. The author demonstrates that VET programs need to be demand-driven and consider the socio-economic aspects of particular regions. Therefore, the significance of the study at grassroots level helps customize VET programs to respond to the demand of the individuals' vocational training needs of rural people by keeping their endogenous needs at the centre of vocational skill development processes. The findings and lessons learnt from action research are also intensively discussed as guiding principles of demand-driven approaches from the learners'/societal perspectives.

Handbook of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Research (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Handbook of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Research (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2008)
Felix Rauner, Rupert Maclean
R20,100 Discovery Miles 201 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) research has become a recognized and well-defined area of interdisciplinary research. This is the first handbook of its kind that specifically concentrates on research and research methods in TVET. The book's sections focus on particular aspects of the field, starting with a presentation of the genesis of TVET research. They further feature research in relation to policy, planning and practice.
