Teaching Religion and Violence (Hardcover, New): Brian K. Pennington Teaching Religion and Violence (Hardcover, New)
Brian K. Pennington
R2,230 Discovery Miles 22 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many people now see religious violence as one of the defining characteristics of the modern world. Instructors are often asked about it in their courses that deal with religion. Classroom discussion of violence committed in the name of religion can either open the door to a more subtle appreciation of complex and divisive social realities or allow students to display the kind of ignorance, prejudice, and recalcitrance that can derail critical analysis. The etiology of religious violence requires the kind of careful distinctions that instructors must work hard to communicate even in the best of classroom circumstances. Teaching Religion and Violence is designed to help instructors to equip students to think critically about religious violence, particularly in the multicultural classroom. The book is organized into two sections. The first, "Traditions," addresses topics and methods appropriate for teaching violence in particular religious traditions. Each essay provides a solid starting point for the instructor developing a new course on violence in one tradition. The overarching aims of the second section, "Approaches," are to suggest alternative rubrics for initiating or furthering discussion of religion and violence and to aid instructors in demonstrating the wide applicability of the questions and concepts developed here. The volume as a whole and each of the essays is firmly grounded in the theoretical literature on religion and violence, in the theory of pedagogy, and in the collective experience of its authors.

Severus of Minorca: Letter on the Conversion of the Jews (Hardcover): Severus of Minorca Severus of Minorca: Letter on the Conversion of the Jews (Hardcover)
Severus of Minorca; Edited by Scott Bradbury
R4,275 Discovery Miles 42 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an edited text, introduction, and the first English translation of a central document in the history of religious coercion in late antiquity: Severus of Minorca's Letter on the Conversion of the Jews. The Letter describes the forced conversion of the Jews of Minorca to Christianity in AD 418, allegedly under the influence of St. Stephen's relics. Although ostensibly a hagiographical work, the Letter is fundamentally an anti-Jewish document, and therein lies its interest for historians. It offers a fascinating perspective on Jewish-Christian relations in a Mediterranean town, and on the motives for religious intolerance in the unsettled age of the Germanic invasions. In addition, its wealth of information about a diaspora Jewish community in the Western empire makes it unique among the surviving sources.

Sara Leila Husseini
R4,550 Discovery Miles 45 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Early Christian-Muslim Debate on the Unity of God examines the writings of three of the earliest known Christian theologians to write comprehensive theological works in Arabic. Theodore Abu Qurra, Abu Ra'ita and 'Ammar al-Basri provide valuable insight into early Christian-Muslim debate shortly after the rise of the Islamic empire. Through close examination of their writings on the doctrine of the Trinity, Sara Husseini demonstrates the creativity of these theologians, who make use of language, style and argumentation characteristic of Islamic theological thought (kalam), in order to help articulate their long-established religious truths. Husseini offers close analysis of the authors individually and comparatively, exploring their engagement with Islamic theology and their role in this fascinating period.

Neither Jew Nor Gentile - Exploring Issues of Racial Diversity on Protestant College Campuses (Hardcover): George Allan Yancey Neither Jew Nor Gentile - Exploring Issues of Racial Diversity on Protestant College Campuses (Hardcover)
George Allan Yancey
R1,127 Discovery Miles 11 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Protestant institutions of higher learning have historically enrolled fewer students of color than nonsectarian colleges and universities. In this book, George Yancey explores the racial climate on Protestant campuses, examining the reasons why these institutions succeed or fail to attract a diverse student body and why students of color who do attend such institutions either succeed or fail to graduate. Of course, no major Protestant denomination endorses overt racism, and Protestant educators have indicated a wish to increase racial diversity on their campuses. Despite this expressed desire, however, Yancey finds numerous barriers to achieving such diversity. On the one hand, evangelical institutions, like the denominations that sponsor them, tend to espouse an individualistic, "colorblind" ideology that ignores racial injustices and discourages the attendance of students of color. Mainline Protestants have much more progressive racial attitudes than conservatives. Ironically, however, Protestants of color tend to be theologically conservative, and have deep disagreements with the mainline on such theological issues as biblical inerrancy and social issues like homosexuality. Yancey finds that many traditional approaches to enhancing diversity appear ineffective. Such diversity programs, he discovers, are not as effective as curriculum reforms or student led multicultural groups. Educational courses and student led groups that deal with racial issues prove to be more highly correlated with a diverse student body than multicultural, anti-racism, community, or non-European cultural programs.

Ritual Participation and Interreligious Dialogue - Boundaries, Transgressions and Innovations (Hardcover): Marianne Moyaert,... Ritual Participation and Interreligious Dialogue - Boundaries, Transgressions and Innovations (Hardcover)
Marianne Moyaert, Joris Geldhof
R4,637 Discovery Miles 46 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shared ritual practices, multi-faith celebrations, and interreligious prayers are becoming increasingly common in the USA and Europe as more people experience religious diversity first hand. While ritual participation can be seen as a powerful expression of interreligious solidarity, it also carries with it challenges of a particularly sensitive nature. Though celebrating and worshiping together can enhance interreligious relations, cross-riting may also lead some believers to question whether it is appropriate to engage in the rituals of another faith community. Some believers may consider cross-ritual participation as inappropriate transgressive behaviour. Bringing together leading international contributors and voices from a number of religious traditions, Ritual Participation and Interreligious Dialogue delves into the complexities and intricacies of the phenomenon. They ask: what are the promises and perils of celebrating and praying together? What are the limits of ritual participation? How can we make sense of feelings of discomfort when entering the sacred space of another faith community? The first book to focus on the lived dimensions of interreligious dialogue through ritual participation rather than textual or doctrinal issues, this innovative volume opens an entirely new perspective.

Black Zion - African American Religious Encounters with Judaism (Hardcover): Yvonne Chireau, Nathaniel Deutsch Black Zion - African American Religious Encounters with Judaism (Hardcover)
Yvonne Chireau, Nathaniel Deutsch
R2,404 Discovery Miles 24 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Black Zion explores the myriad ways in which African American religions have encountered Jewish traditions, beliefs, and spaces. The collection's unifying argument is that religion is the missing piece of the cultural jigsaw puzzle, and that much of the recent turmoil in black-Jewish relations would be better understood, if not alleviated, if the religious roots of those relations were illuminated. Ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Hebrew Israelites and from Abraham Joshua Heschel to Martin Luther King, Jr., the book sheds light on a little examined but vitally important dimension of black-Jewish relations in America.

Taiz?--the word is strangely familiar to many throughout the contemporary church. Familiar, perhaps, because the chanted prayers of Taiz? are well practiced in churches throughout the world. Strangely, however, because so little is known about Taiz?--from its historic beginnings to how the word itself is pronounced. The worship of the Taiz? community, as it turns out, is best understood in the context of its greater mission. On the day Jason Brian Santos arrived in the Taiz? community its leader was brutally murdered before his eyes. Instead of making Santos want to leave, the way the community handled this tragedy made him long to stay and learn more about this group of people who could respond to such evil with grace and love. In this book he takes us on a tour of one of the world's first ecumenical monastic orders, from its monastic origins in the war-torn south of 1940s France to its emerging mission as a pilgrimage site and spiritual focal point for millions of young people throughout the world. InA Community Called Taiz? you'll meet the brothers of the order and the countless visitors and volunteers who have taken upon themselves a modest mission: pronouncing peace and reconciliation to the church and the world.

VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY - Changes and Challenges in 20th Century Indonesian Islam (Hardcover): VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY - Changes and Challenges in 20th Century Indonesian Islam (Hardcover)
R1,284 R1,062 Discovery Miles 10 620 Save R222 (17%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The twentieth century was a fascinating period of profound political, social and economic changes in Indonesia. These changes contributed to the diversification of the religious landscape and as a result, religious authority was redistributed over an increasing number of actors. Although many Muslims in Indonesia continued to regard the ulama, the traditional religious scholars, as the principle source of religious guidance, religious authority has become more diffused and differentiated over time. The present book consists of contributions which all deal with the multi-facetted and multidimensional topic of religious authority and aim to complement each other. Most papers deal with Indonesia, but two dealing with other countries have been included in order to add a comparative dimension. Amongst the topics dealt with are the different and changing roles of the ulama, the rise and role of Muslim organizations, developments within Islamic education, like the madrasa, and the spread of Salafi ideas in contemporary Indonesia.

Images of Jesus Christ in Islam - 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Oddbjorn Leirvik Images of Jesus Christ in Islam - 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Oddbjorn Leirvik
R5,283 Discovery Miles 52 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title offers comprehensive and contemporary exploration of the role of Jesus in both Islam and Christianity and issues of dialogue in Christian-Muslim relations. "Images of Jesus Christ in Islam 2nd Edition" provides a general introduction to the question of Jesus Christ in Islam and a dialogical discussion of this issues' importance for Christian-Muslim relations. Its originality lies in its comprehensive presentation of relevant sources and research and its discussion of Islamic images of Christ in the wider context of Muslim-Christian relations. Oddbjorn Leirvik provides a comprehensive introduction to a breadth of Muslim traditions through an examination of interpretations of Jesus throughout history, whilst also examining historic tensions between Islam and Christianity. This book's distinctive contribution lies in its dialogical perspective in the perennial area of interest of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations.

Redemption and Resistance - The Messianic Hopes of Jews and Christians in Antiquity (Hardcover): Markus Bockmuehl, James... Redemption and Resistance - The Messianic Hopes of Jews and Christians in Antiquity (Hardcover)
Markus Bockmuehl, James Carleton Paget
R6,433 Discovery Miles 64 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Redemption and Resistance brings together an eminent cast of contributors to provide a state-of-the-art discussion of Messianism as a topic of political and religious commitment and controversy. By surveying this motif over nearly a thousand years with the help of a focused historical and political searchlight, this volume is sure to break fresh ground. It will serve as an attractive contribution to the history of ancient Judaism and Christianity, of the complex and often problematic relationship between them, and of the conflicting loyalties their hopes for redemption created vis--vis a public order that was at first pagan and later Christian. Although each chapter is designed to stand on its own as an introduction to the topic at hand, the overall argument unfolds a coherent history. The first two parts, on pre-Christian Jewish and primitive Christian Messianism, set the stage by identifying two entities that in Part III are then addressed in the development of their explicit relationship in a Graeco-Roman world marked by violent persecution of Jewish and Christian hopes and loyalties. The story is then explored beyond the Constantinian turn and its abortive reversal under Julian, to the Christian Empire up to the rise of Islam.

Muslim and Christian Understanding - Theory and Application of "A Common Word" (Hardcover): W. El-Ansary, D. Linnan Muslim and Christian Understanding - Theory and Application of "A Common Word" (Hardcover)

This book explores "A Common Word Between Us and You," a high-level ongoing Christian-Muslim dialogue process. The Common Word process was commenced by leading Islamic scholars and intellectuals as outreach in response to the Pope's much criticized Regensburg address of 2007, and brings to the fore, in the interest of developing a meaningful peace, how the Islamic and Christian communities representing well over half of the world's population might agree on love of God and love of neighbor as common beliefs.

All Religion Is Inter-Religion - Engaging the Work of Steven M. Wasserstrom (Hardcover): Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, Paul Robertson All Religion Is Inter-Religion - Engaging the Work of Steven M. Wasserstrom (Hardcover)
Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, Paul Robertson
R3,997 Discovery Miles 39 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

All Religion Is Inter-Religion analyses the ways inter-religious relations have contributed both historically and philosophically to the constructions of the category of "religion" as a distinct subject of study. Regarded as contemporary classics, Steven M. Wasserstrom's Religion after Religion (1999) and Between Muslim and Jew (1995) provided a theoretical reorientation for the study of religion away from hierophanies and ultimacy, and toward lived history and deep pluralism. This book distills and systematizes this reorientation into nine theses on the study of religion. Drawing on these theses--and Wasserstrom's opus more generally--a distinguished group of his colleagues and former students demonstrate that religions can, and must, be understood through encounters in real time and space, through the complex relations they create and maintain between people, and between people and their pasts. The book also features an afterword by Wasserstrom himself, which poses nine riddles to students of religion based on his personal experiences working on religion at the turn of the twenty-first century.

There's an Easter Egg on Your Seder Plate - Surviving Your Child's Interfaith Marriage (Hardcover): Steven Carr Reuben There's an Easter Egg on Your Seder Plate - Surviving Your Child's Interfaith Marriage (Hardcover)
Steven Carr Reuben
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the last two decades, interfaith marriage has emerged as one of the primary cultural realities of North American religious life. While the numbers of interfaith marriages continue their pattern of steady growth, so does the demand for practical, supportive, non-judgmental advice to help ease the emotional pain and bewilderment so often experienced by the parents of interfaith couples. The parents are often the least prepared to cope with the wide range of spiritual, emotional, and family issues interfaith marriages inevitably provoke, yet few books address the concerns, fears, and anxieties of parents of children entering such marriages. Most parents want their children to be happy, to find loving, supportive, nurturing, sensitive and caring marital partners. But they also very often have an unspoken and unacknowledged need to see their own values and beliefs perpetuated into the next generation and beyond. Thus, confronting the stark reality of interfaith marriage raises deep-seated feelings of guilt, failure, loss and pain for the millions of parents whose children are making those marital choices every day. This book is a practical guide for parents whose children intermarry. It draws upon Rabbi Reuben's personal experiences officiating at over a thousand interfaith weddings. The author imparts the lessons he has learned for helping parents create loving, supportive, and successful relationships with their own children, their new son- or daughter-in-law, and their new interfaith in-laws, without compromising the integrity of their own dearly-held beliefs and faith. In addition, he incorporates anecdotal experiences of parents who have shared their own formulas for successfullycoping with the day-to-day issues of maintaining the best relationship with their children. And he includes stories from same-sex unions as well. Written for people of various faiths across the religious spectrum, this book is a valuable source of information, guidance, and support. It speaks directly to parents, with concrete practical suggestions about how to maintain the best possible relationship with their children--and be a positive influence upon their grandchildren.

Interreligious Relations - Biblical Perspectives (Hardcover): Hallvard Hagelia, Markus Zehnder Interreligious Relations - Biblical Perspectives (Hardcover)
Hallvard Hagelia, Markus Zehnder
R4,648 Discovery Miles 46 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume presents international perspectives on interreligious dialogue, with a particular focus on how this can be found or understood within biblical texts. The volume is in four parts covering both the Old and New Testaments (and related Greco Roman texts) as well as the history of reception and issues of hermeneutics. Issues of the relationships between religious cultures are assessed both in antiquity and modernity In Part 1 (Old Testament) contributions range from the discussion of the bible and plurality of theologies in church life (Erhard Gerstenberger) to the challenge of multi-culturalism (Cornelis Van Dam). Part 2 (New Testament and Greco-Roman Texts) considers such things as Pagan, Jewish and Christian historiography (Armin Baum) and the different beliefs it is possible to discern in the Ephesian community (Tor Vegge). Part 3 provides issues from the history of reception - including the role of Jesus in Islam (Craig A. Evans). The volume is completed by a hermeneutical reflection by Joze Krasovec, which draws the threads of dialogue together and questions how we can best examine the bible in a modern, international, multicultural society.

The theme of this book is the early encounters between Christianity and Islam in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire and in Persia from the beginnings of Islam in Mecca to the time of the Abbasids in Bagdad. The contributions in this volume deal with crucial subjects of political and theological dialogue and controversy that characterized the varying responses of the Christian communities in the Byzantine Eastern provinces to the Islamic conquest and its subsequent impact on Byzantine society and history. This volume opens up new research perspectives surrounding the confrontation of Christianity with the early theological and political development of Islam. The present publication emphasizes the importance of the study of the beginnings and the foundations of the relations between the two religions.
