In thirty-two cities across five continents, Swiss photographer Roger Eberhard booked a standard double room at the local Hilton and took two photographs: one of the room's interior, always from the same perspective, and one of the view from the hotel room's window. The result of this project is Roger Eberhard - Standard, an unusual urban panorama of sixty-four photographs, reproduced large enough to make it easy to see the diversity within the uniformity of one of the world's largest international hotel chains. In this era of increasing globalisation and commercialisation, Roger Eberhard - Standard shows that international hotel chains, restaurants, and similar establishments maintain a remarkably uniform design - a true standard - that has made many places and cities feel almost interchangeable. At the same time, they retain some of their unique characteristics, and Eberhard's photographs reveal the subtle, yet important, influence of local taste. The book also contains an essay by German novelist Benedict Wells on the monotony he feels while staying in successions of hotel rooms on book tours, as well as essays by art historian Franziska Solte and curator Nadine Wietlisbach.
Handsomely designed and richly illustrated, this publication surveys the magnificent spectrum of projects undertaken by French architect and interior designer Charles Percier (1764-1838). After gaining an illustrious reputation for supervising the scenery at the Paris Opera during the French Revolution, Percier was later appointed by Napoleon Bonaparte. With the Emperor's support, he developed the opulent versions of neoclassicism closely associated with the Napoleonic era, and now known as Directoire style and Empire style. Percier worked on the renovation or redecoration of many of France's royal palaces, including the Louvre, the Tuileries, and the chateaux of Malmaison, Saint-Cloud, and Fontainebleau. The full scope and variety of Percier's design projects are revealed in this book, which also includes archival material detailing Percier's relationships with patrons and peers. Published in association with Bard Graduate Center Exhibition Schedule: Bard Graduate Center (11/18/16-02/15/17) Chateau de Fontainebleau (03/18/17-06/19/17)
Form and Structure in Interior Architecture examines the basic ideas that underpin the design of interior space: From the establishment of a relationship between the existing building and the new components that inhabit it, to the design and positioning of significant elements within the space itself. Through a series of groundbreaking case studies from around the world, this book proposes a method of analysis, understanding and exploitation of the existing building. Studies of contemporary work engage and stimulate, while clear diagrams and explanations allow students to understand and relate to the works in the context of architecture and interiors as a wider field. The second edition includes a new chapter on sustainable interior architecture. This brings the book up to date by covering current thinking about the importance of sustainability in architectural design.
Since the publication of Edward Said's groundbreaking work Orientalism 35 years ago, numerous studies have explored the West's fraught and enduring fascination with the so-called Orient. Focusing their critical attention on the literary and pictorial arts, these studies have, to date, largely neglected the world of interior design. Oriental Interiors is the first book to fully explore the formation and perception of eastern-inspired interiors from an orientalist perspective. Orientalist spaces in the West have taken numerous forms since the 18th century to the present day, and the fifteen chapters in this collection reflect that diversity, dealing with subjects as varied and engaging as harems, Turkish baths on RMS Titanic, Parisian bachelor quarters, potted palms, and contemporary yoga studios. It explores how furnishings, surface treatments, ornament and music, for example, are deployed to enhance the exoticism and pleasures of oriental spaces, looking across a range of international locations. Organized into three parts, each introduced by the editor, the essays are grouped by theme to highlight critical paths into the intersections between orientalist studies, spatial theory, design studies, visual culture and gender studies, making this essential reading for students and researchers alike.

Without design, the "brand identity" is just a name, sometimes paired with a statement that enumerates the values of the company. It is two-dimensional when written down or printed. The task for the retail designer is to turn that name or statement into a three-dimensional environment in which consumers may interact with the brand's product or services. "Designing ""the Brand Identity in Retail Spaces "is a casebook that shows and tells how architects and store designers have tackled that challenge. With more than 50 examples of renowned brands from around the world, this book examines every stage of a brand's "lifetime" - from inception to show room. Cases run the retail gamut, including restaurants, department stores, and luxury brands. Each case is paired with analysis and interviews with brand managers and designers, guiding the reader through the entire design process. Easy to read and replete with stunning illustrations, this is the perfect primer for students and young professionals creating brand identities in their retail design.
The phenomenon of the Cistercian Order occupies a key place in the history of Western culture as it grew to dominate reformed European monasticism in the high middle ages. The transition from the Romanesque to Gothic styles occurred in the twelfth century when the order was expanding most dramatically. With sharp, clean lines, and minimal decor, its architecture was designed to reflect the simplicity and austerity required for this experiment in monastic life. An important reference work, The Cistercian Arts offers insights into a contemplative order that expanded from its modest origins in the Burgundian heartland to encompass six continents. Under the supervision of Terryl Kinder and Roberto Cassanelli, the theological and spiritual aspects and material culture of the Cistercian world are analyzed in depth by more than thirty international specialists in a forty-chapter overview. Music, libraries, water management, metallurgy, farming, liturgical arts, sacred reading, and many other facets of monastic life are traced from the founding of the order in 1098 to the present day. While the Cistercian Order grew to include approximately 1,700 abbeys for men and women, it did not end with the middle ages, and architecture was not its only manifestation. This exquisitely illustrated volume shows how the many arts created by and for Cistercian abbeys continued well beyond the medieval period.

Interior designers are faced with the challenge of creating rooms that allow an authentic stillness in the most inherently transient of interior spaces. The selection of projects covers the broadest possible spectrum: redesign - ing the interior of historic grand hotels, creative solutions for budget hotels as well as prize wining design hotels. What makes this title a valuable reference is the direct insight into the planning process of two professional and highly successful interior designers.
The shop/house the building combining commercial/retail uses and dwellings appears over many periods of history in most cities in the world. This book combines architectural history, cross-cultural understandings and accounts of contemporary policy and building practice to provide a comprehensive account of this common but overlooked building. The merchant's house in northern European cities, the Asian shophouse, the apartment building on New York avenues, typical apartment buildings in Rome and in Paris this variety of shop/houses along with the commonality of attributes that form them, mean that the hybrid phenomenon is as much a social and economic one as it is an architectural one. Professionals, city officials and developers are taking a new look at buildings that allow for higher densities and mixed-use. Describing exemplary contemporary projects and issues pertaining to their implementation as well as the background, cultural variety and urban attributes, this book will benefit designers dealing with mixed-use buildings as well as academics and students.
The ongoing challenge for the design practitioner is to consider the changing face of the user the client when designing the environment today and in the future. This text fulfills a huge void that exists in teaching resources on the non-Western cultures and provides a much-needed educational resource so that all educators can teach interior design from an inclusive perspective that acknowledges the contributions of all world cultures, not just western European traditions. Each chapter represents a selected country and provide information on that country's culture, design philosophies, theories, principles and elements, and symbolic meaning evident in built forms, colors, patterns, and textiles, as told by contributors native to that country. In addition to providing in-depth information on featured countries, the book provides an overview of the cultures and traditions of the regions Eurasia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Using a residential design scenario that increases in scope from chapter to chapter and results in a complete set of working drawings, Drafting & Design: Basics for Interior Design teaches the art of drafting through hands-on application. In addition to its practical functions, such as helping to optimize safety and security, lighting also has another principal task - creating emotions. Light and color can be used to achieve the most varied and astonishing effects. These effects are dependent on the project and spatial environment, but they also depend in large measure on cultural context. This study is based on forty-seven interviews with leading lighting designers from North and South America, Europe, and Asia. For the first time, it explores in a systematic fashion what aesthetic, emotional, and atmospheric tasks a good lighting design can accomplish. The international diversity of the interviewed designers makes for surprising insights. Universal constants are pointed out, but so are the remarkable differences in reception and effect that are occasioned by different societies and cultures. It is imperative, then, for professional lighting designers and architects to familiarize themselves with these "lighting cultures," and this book offers an informative and stimulating opportunity to do so.

It considers the blurring of borders with other design disciplines, but interior, graphic design and marketing in particular. Supported by case study examples and practical in nature, this book offers a guide on how to approach the design of the narrative.
