The catalog for the 2015/16 exhibition at the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) in Vienna is dedicated to Josef Frank (1885-1967), one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century. In addition to his groundbreaking architectural work, the catalog focuses his design, which remains highly influential to this day. As an architect and designer, Frank remains contemporary, having promoted a pragmatic approach to design that focused less on formal qualities and more on those of social experience. Frank's ideal of an unaffected and unpretentious practicality, aimed at an independent and sophisticated bourgeois culture of living beyond stylistic dogmas and fashionable conventions, seems more relevant than ever.
Modern Theatres 1950-2020 is an investigation of theatres, concert halls and opera houses in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America. The book explores in detail 30 of the most significant theatres, concert halls, opera houses and dance spaces that opened between 1950 and 2010. Each theatre is reviewed and assessed by experts in theatre buildings, such as architects, acousticians, consultants and theatre practitioners, and illustrated with full-colour photographs and comparative plans and sections. A further 20 theatres that opened from 2009 to 2020 are concisely reviewed and illustrated. An excellent resource for students of theatre planning, theatre architecture and architectural design, Modern Theatres 1950 - 2020 discusses the role of performing arts buildings in cities, explores their public and performances spaces and examines the acoustics and technologies needed in a great building. This beautifully illustrated book is also a must-read for architects, theater designers, theatre historians, and theatre practitioners.
As the signature event of Hong Kong Interior Design Association (HKIDA), APIDA aims to promote professional standards among interior design practices, recognise outstanding interior design projects and invites interior design on a broader social level. Many outstanding submissions have not only grown in number this year, but also completed on a whole new level. Many projects pursue minimalism, adhering to the user-oriented view, reinforcing the intimate relationship among design, nature and man, transcending good interior design to sculpt space, emphasising the balance between architecture and nature with tranquil atmosphere, and pushing the boundaries of design.
MANUscript is a reference book sui generis: a combination of inspiration, guide, and notebook. It explores basic aspects of interior design (ceilings, floors, walls, doors, stairs) and the relevant materials used (rugs, wall paint, glass, wood products, stone, concrete). It also focuses on means of recording and communicating designs: methods of representation, practical tables, rules of thumb, and hands-on suggestions. This updated and expanded edition addresses new and important topics in day-to-day design practice, discusses how to use plants in green facades, space-defining shrubs, the staging potential of light, and also lists key terms in a multilingual table. There are also stimulating statements on design-related issues from prominent architects, interior designers, and designers. An additional special feature of this publication are the pages with space for personal additions, observations, and notes.
The Fundamentals of Interior Architecture (second edition) offers an introduction to the key elements involved in the creation of aesthetically appealing and practically appropriate interior architecture. The book contains five sections, which together encapsulate the principle ideas, skills and knowledge that are employed in effective interior architecture and design. Areas of study include space and form, site and function, materials and texture, light and mood, and presentation and representation. Emphasis is placed on spatial solutions that support the needs of the client and which recognise the qualities of the building and its situation. The theory is contextualised using practitioner biographies and work from leading designers. The new material in this highly illustrated second edition includes interviews with leading practitioners. In addition, at the end of each chapter there are new projects to encourage readers to explore further the creative possibilities of working as an interior architect.

Appearing since 2007, the series has become widely known and recognized as an established platform for relevant publications from art and science. The books are published in German as well as in English.
In thirty-two cities across five continents, Swiss photographer Roger Eberhard booked a standard double room at the local Hilton and took two photographs: one of the room's interior, always from the same perspective, and one of the view from the hotel room's window. The result of this project is Roger Eberhard - Standard, an unusual urban panorama of sixty-four photographs, reproduced large enough to make it easy to see the diversity within the uniformity of one of the world's largest international hotel chains. In this era of increasing globalisation and commercialisation, Roger Eberhard - Standard shows that international hotel chains, restaurants, and similar establishments maintain a remarkably uniform design - a true standard - that has made many places and cities feel almost interchangeable. At the same time, they retain some of their unique characteristics, and Eberhard's photographs reveal the subtle, yet important, influence of local taste. The book also contains an essay by German novelist Benedict Wells on the monotony he feels while staying in successions of hotel rooms on book tours, as well as essays by art historian Franziska Solte and curator Nadine Wietlisbach.
Form and Structure in Interior Architecture examines the basic ideas that underpin the design of interior space: From the establishment of a relationship between the existing building and the new components that inhabit it, to the design and positioning of significant elements within the space itself. Through a series of groundbreaking case studies from around the world, this book proposes a method of analysis, understanding and exploitation of the existing building. Studies of contemporary work engage and stimulate, while clear diagrams and explanations allow students to understand and relate to the works in the context of architecture and interiors as a wider field. The second edition includes a new chapter on sustainable interior architecture. This brings the book up to date by covering current thinking about the importance of sustainability in architectural design.
The phenomenon of the Cistercian Order occupies a key place in the history of Western culture as it grew to dominate reformed European monasticism in the high middle ages. The transition from the Romanesque to Gothic styles occurred in the twelfth century when the order was expanding most dramatically. With sharp, clean lines, and minimal decor, its architecture was designed to reflect the simplicity and austerity required for this experiment in monastic life. An important reference work, The Cistercian Arts offers insights into a contemplative order that expanded from its modest origins in the Burgundian heartland to encompass six continents. Under the supervision of Terryl Kinder and Roberto Cassanelli, the theological and spiritual aspects and material culture of the Cistercian world are analyzed in depth by more than thirty international specialists in a forty-chapter overview. Music, libraries, water management, metallurgy, farming, liturgical arts, sacred reading, and many other facets of monastic life are traced from the founding of the order in 1098 to the present day. While the Cistercian Order grew to include approximately 1,700 abbeys for men and women, it did not end with the middle ages, and architecture was not its only manifestation. This exquisitely illustrated volume shows how the many arts created by and for Cistercian abbeys continued well beyond the medieval period.
As our lives accelerate to keep pace with today's frantic world, the possibility of truly arriving at a destination grows in importance. Interior designers are faced with the challenge of creating rooms that allow an authentic stillness in the most inherently transient of interior spaces. The title showcases a wide variety of takes on the recurring theme of the hotel room. Featured are 101 different design concepts by two spe - cialists in the field of hospitality design. The selection of projects covers the broadest possible spectrum: redesign - ing the interior of historic grand hotels, creative solutions for budget hotels as well as prize wining design hotels. What makes this title a valuable reference is the direct insight into the planning process of two professional and highly successful interior designers.
What is the process of forming rooms, which elements are used and how are room-shaping components defined? The fourth volume in the SCALE series, Furnishing | Zoning, deals with the relationships between building typology and building structure, and between spatial composition and interior design. The relationship between the briefing and the catalogue of requirements, and between shell construction and fit-out, is elucidated. Connections at walls, ceilings and floors are explained in detail and illustrated with case studies of selected projects. In addition, the authors demonstrate how a well-designed sequence of spaces can create added value by means, for example, of the choice of materials and the lighting scheme, or adaptability to accommodate new functions. Following the introductory chapter on the subject of space, the volume is divided into chapters on floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture and fixtures. Furnishing | Zoning examines the subject from different professional angles and thereby provides valuable support for practical interior design.
The shop/house the building combining commercial/retail uses and dwellings appears over many periods of history in most cities in the world. This book combines architectural history, cross-cultural understandings and accounts of contemporary policy and building practice to provide a comprehensive account of this common but overlooked building. The merchant's house in northern European cities, the Asian shophouse, the apartment building on New York avenues, typical apartment buildings in Rome and in Paris this variety of shop/houses along with the commonality of attributes that form them, mean that the hybrid phenomenon is as much a social and economic one as it is an architectural one. Professionals, city officials and developers are taking a new look at buildings that allow for higher densities and mixed-use. Describing exemplary contemporary projects and issues pertaining to their implementation as well as the background, cultural variety and urban attributes, this book will benefit designers dealing with mixed-use buildings as well as academics and students.

Commercial trade fairs, brand experiences, themed attractions, world expositions, museum galleries, visitor centers, historic houses, landscape interpretation and art installation are all areas that can be categorized under the broad umbrella term of ‘ exhibition’. Millions of people visit exhibitions of one sort or another every year and globally it is a multi-billion dollar industry. Basics Interior Design: Exhibition Design offers a better understanding of the complexity of exhibition design as a discipline, by exploring the role of the exhibition designer as a creative practitioner. It considers the blurring of borders with other design disciplines, but interior, graphic design and marketing in particular. Supported by case study examples and practical in nature, this book offers a guide on how to approach the design of the narrative.

This book examines how different software can be incorporated into the traditional phases of an interior design project and demonstrates technical tactics within those programs to optimize workflow and interoperability. It is not a technical reference manual for any of the software packages described -- the goal is for students to develop a basic working knowledge of the most commonly used software and the skills to create professional electronic presentations. Just as the techniques of using a paint brush should not prove an impediment to a painter, and in fact can be a source of inspiration, so the use of software to explore and develop our designs can lead to an ever richer and more exciting built environment. Key Features: -- Follows the stages of the design process (programming, schematic design, design communications, design development, and implementation) to complete their studio project with available technology -- Includes screen shots from the various software discussed such as Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, MS Office and Windows -- Combines original examples illustrating the step by step procedures, color renderings, screen shots, and other drawings -- Includes two end of chapter projects: The Chocolate Cafe (simple one-level project, approx. 2500 sq. ft.) and The Bowling Alley (advanced multi-level project, approx. 12,000 sq ft) -- "Tips and Tricks" flagged by various icons in each chapter referring to the various software programs in each chapter -- Instructor's Guide available -- PP available
