Re-readings is an authoritative testament to the complex process of remodelling existing buildings. Although buildings have always been reused, the process of doing so has rarely been treated as an artform. In recent years, however, a huge amount of press coverage has been devoted to remodelling projects such as the Tate Modern in London, the Baltic Art Factory in Gateshead, the Grand Louvre pyramid and courtyard, and the Reichstag in Berlin, to name but a few. By attracting prestigious architects to its practice, it would appear that remodelling, once the dowdy cousin of the more glamorous architecture, has gained a new respectability. Re-readings responds to remodelling as an artform, making sense of the considerable structural, aesthetic, environmental, contextual and programmatic challenges of remodelling existing buildings. Illustrated throughout with a rich international portfolio of case studies, it explains the theory behind the way that architects and designers interpret and adapt buildings.

This is a narrative of the life experience of an ordinary person who grew up in the rural areas of Transkei. After learning about and understanding life according to a purely African world view, he suffered a cultural shock when he came into contact with the contradictions of urban life which imposed Western-style obligations on African people. Ndima's school and university experiences brought home the realisation that African values were treated with contempt, as the dominant Western culture was continuing to bolster white supremacy. After matric, Ndima worked as a clerk in Port St John's and became involved in solving a number of labour disputes. While studying law he was subjected to the animosity his lecturers displayed towards black students. After graduation, Ndima worked as a prosecutor at the Mqanduli district court and later became a magistrate in various districts of the Transkei. As presiding officer, he discovered the wealth of diversity in the various cultural groupings in the territory and learnt to understand the feelings of detained, arrested, accused, convicted and imprisoned people and their relatives, and the impact of these events on their home life and on their personalities. The author's personal history and his experience gained as a magistrate form the basis for the insights that directed him in handling the cases over which he presided.
"Box366" is exactly what people in all areas of creative work have long been waiting for: a flexible set of colour cards for practical use in architectural, interior, product, graphic, fashion and textile design, for drawing lessons and manual training in schools, kindergartens etc. Every designer knows the problems that arise when he has to define colours or combinations of colours with the help of a colour fan: in the creative design process, the systematically stepped colours of the fan are dissatisfying. The fixed colour samples make it impossible to regard the colours side by side and to compare them. Moreover, the colour samples are often too small for reliable verification. "Box366" comprises 366 colour cards, subtle degrees of difference from all shades of colour - very light and very dark, pure colours and subtle shades of grey. It is not a colour system but a comprehensive collection of colours for practical use. Should the chosen colours or colour combinations be destined for reproduction, they can be defined with a conventional standard colour system. |
