South African Business in China - Navigating Institutions (Hardcover): Kelly Meng South African Business in China - Navigating Institutions (Hardcover)
Kelly Meng
R1,554 Discovery Miles 15 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Sino-African relations have evoked a great deal of geo-strategic interest in recent years. Most attention has focused on China's assistance to and growing involvement in the economic development of several African nations. Far less emphasis has been placed on Africans in China, and on African actors' involvement in the Chinese economy, despite the importance of both to genuinely bilateral economic relations. This is one of the first studies to focus on South African foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mainland China. The research aims to identify and specify the key institutional factors that have contributed to the effectiveness or otherwise of South African firms entering and operating within the Chinese market. The research also investigates the characteristics and processes that have effectively shaped South African firms' business strategies to negotiate the current Chinese institutional environment. The study's primary empirical contribution is ten real-life case studies drawn from a cross-section of South African business actors who have sought to penetrate the Chinese market. These case studies are interrogated conceptually by means of a three-dimensional institutional model which explores the role of formal and informal business processes and practices in influencing business success and failure in the Sino-South African context. It will be of value to researchers, academics, policymakers, Sino-African business practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of international business, political economy, strategy, and Asian and African studies.

Failure to Adjust - How Americans Got Left Behind in the Global Economy (Paperback, Revised edition): Edward Alden Failure to Adjust - How Americans Got Left Behind in the Global Economy (Paperback, Revised edition)
Edward Alden
R529 Discovery Miles 5 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

*Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden's book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.

Internationalisation and Strategic Control - An Industrial History (Hardcover): Morten Pedersen Internationalisation and Strategic Control - An Industrial History (Hardcover)
Morten Pedersen
R4,479 Discovery Miles 44 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a study of the emergence of international business. It immerses itself in the topic of how companies can control income-generating assets in foreign countries, the key element often used to define a multinational enterprise, and propounds the notion that control of crucial dispositions by foreign companies can be achieved by other means than direct foreign investment - cash flow and portfolio ownership. Internationalisation and Strategic Control analyses the extent to which a firm can control the investments of foreign companies in the field of supply and maintenance of production machinery. It achieves this through a case study of how F.L. Smidth & Co., global leaders in providing technology for the cement industry since the 1890s, managed to achieve a vital influence over, and control of, cement-producing companies in Asia in the period 1890-1938. The study examines how this strategy was promoted by some internal and external factors and circumstances, and hindered by others. In highlighting strategic tools and initiatives other than cash flow and portfolio ownership, the book applies concepts taken from a broad range of research fields covering social science, cultural analysis, micro history, Actor-Network-Theory and industrial archaeology. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of international business, business history and globalisation.

Business Models and Firm Internationalisation (Hardcover): Christian Nielsen, Svetla T. Marinova, Marin A. Marinov Business Models and Firm Internationalisation (Hardcover)
Christian Nielsen, Svetla T. Marinova, Marin A. Marinov
R4,478 Discovery Miles 44 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Internationalisation has been a binding request for firms dealing with the challenges of the present-day realities. Extant international business publications have recently begun to point out the relationship between the notions of 'business model' and 'internationalisation', yet the filed needs considerably more attention. The core aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which business models and internationalisation impact one another in the process of initiating and expanding international business activities. The analysis makes it feasible to detect the core issues of the interdependences between business models and internationalisation to facilitate management decision-making and implementation of pertinent firm internationalisation incorporating the application of appropriate business models. In this book, the business model is applied to explore the specifics and aspects of firm internationalisation processes. Innovating the business model is analysed as a persuasive means for augmenting the propensities of firms to internationalise. The book enriches the comprehension of the significance of business model innovation as an enabler of firm internationalisation, in view that scares in what manners business model innovation facilitate firm internationalisation. The book chapters address a broad range of issues encompassing: the general roles of business model in firm internationalisation, the relationships between digital business models and platforms on one side and firm internationalisation on another, how business models determine the internationalisation of services firms, the interplay between business models and firm internationalisation in specific contexts. It will, therefore, be of interest to researchers, academics and advanced students in the fields of international business and management.

Music, Business and Peacebuilding (Hardcover): Constance Cook Glen, Timothy L. Fort Music, Business and Peacebuilding (Hardcover)
Constance Cook Glen, Timothy L. Fort
R5,405 Discovery Miles 54 050 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Business schools are placing more emphasis on the role of business in society. Top business school accreditors are shifting to mandating that schools teach their students about the social impact of business, including AACSB standards to require the incorporation of business impact on society into all elements of accredited institutions. Researchers are also increasingly focused on issues related to sustainability, but in particular to business and peace as a field. A strong strain of scholarship argues that ethics is nurtured by emotions and through aesthetic quests for moral excellence. The arts (and music as shown specifically in this book) can be a resource to nudge positive emotions in the direction toward ethical behavior and, logically, then toward peace. Business provides a model for positive interactions that not only foster long-term successful business but also incrementally influences society. This book provides an opportunity for integration and recognition of how music (and other art forms) can further encourage business toward the direction of peace while business provides a platform for the dissemination and modeling of the positive capabilities of music toward the aims of peace in the world today. The primary market for this book is the academic audience. Unlike many other academic books, however, the interdisciplinary nature of the book allows for multiple academic audiences. Thus, this book reaches into schools of music, business, political science, film studies, sports and society studies, the humanities, ethics and, of course, peace studies.

The Chinese Capital Markets (Paperback): Chris Adcock, Douglas Cumming, Alessandra Guariglia, Wenxuan Hou The Chinese Capital Markets (Paperback)
Chris Adcock, Douglas Cumming, Alessandra Guariglia, Wenxuan Hou
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the past China's capital market featured prevalent state ownership and a weak legal environment. It has, however, achieved very substantial development in the past two decades. China has surpassed Japan as the world's second-largest stock market and has also emerged as a leading player in green bonds and Fintech markets. The chapters in this book provide insights on Chinese listed firms and advance the understanding of China's unique institutions. Some important questions are covered including the governance role of foreign investors in partially privatized firms, the financial implications of political connections, the "Chinese model" of commercial banks and regulatory reforms that promote the marketization of the stock markets, among others. These studies have important implications for other emerging economies, on the recent China-US trade conflicts and about the Trump administration's complaints about the role of the Chinese government in capital markets. This book selectively includes the most influential articles from two special issues of The European Journal of Finance, which were based on selections of papers presented at a series of conferences on the Chinese Capital Markets.

R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Political Economy of New Regionalisms in the Pacific Rim (Paperback): Jose Briceno-Ruiz, Philippe De Lombaerde The Political Economy of New Regionalisms in the Pacific Rim (Paperback)
Jose Briceno-Ruiz, Philippe De Lombaerde
R1,383 Discovery Miles 13 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Combining an analysis of regionalism from a systemic view with a domestic political-economy analysis, this book sheds light on the new dynamics and emerging configurations of regionalisms and interregionalisms in the post-Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Donald Trump's presidency has transformed trans-Pacific economic and political relations, contrasting sharply with President Obama's 'pivot to Asia' strategy. Unilateralism and bilateralism have returned to the center stage, at the cost of regionalism, interregionalism, and multilateralism. Understanding these new dynamics requires closer examination of the underlying domestic political economies. Examining ten country case studies of multi-actor agency at the national level, expert contributors argue that trans-Pacific relations should not only be explained in terms of the behavior of the major powers, but that medium powers, and even small countries, can exert influence and occupy strategic nodes and contribute to shaping a new international relations network. Their findings will be of interest to scholars of international relations, international political economy, regionalism, and international economics.

Insolvency Law and Multinational Groups - Theories, Solutions and Recommendations for Business Failure (Paperback): Daoning... Insolvency Law and Multinational Groups - Theories, Solutions and Recommendations for Business Failure (Paperback)
Daoning Zhang
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The insolvency of multinational corporate groups creates a compelling challenge to the commercial world. As many medium and large-sized companies are multinational companies with operations in different countries, it is important to provide appropriate solutions for the insolvency of these key market players. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the cross-border insolvency theories, practical solutions and regulatory solutions for the insolvency of multinational corporate groups. Whilst the book recognises certain merits of these solutions, it also reveals the limitations and uncertainty caused by them. An analysis of the provisions and tools relating to cross-border insolvency of multinational corporate groups in the new EU Regulation on insolvency proceedings 2015, the UNCITRAL Model Law on cross-border insolvency, the Directive on preventive restructuring frameworks and the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive 2014, along with a study of directors' duties, are included in this book. This book focuses on the insolvency and rescue of non-financial corporate groups. However, it is also important to recognise the similarities and differences between corporate insolvency regimes and bank resolution regimes. In particular, lessons learnt from bank resolution practices may be useful for non-financial corporate groups. This book aims to provide an in-depth examination of the existing solutions for the insolvency of multinational corporate groups. It also aims to view cross-border insolvency of corporate groups within a broad context where all relevant regimes and theories interact with each other. Therefore, directors' duties in the vicinity of insolvency, preventive insolvency proceedings, procedural consolidation, international cooperative frameworks and bank resolution regimes are considered together. This book may appeal to academics, students and practitioners within the areas of corporate law, cross-border insolvency law and financial law.

Human Resources and the Firm in International Perspective (Hardcover): Robert Fitzgerald, Christopher Rowley Human Resources and the Firm in International Perspective (Hardcover)
Robert Fitzgerald, Christopher Rowley
R12,103 Discovery Miles 121 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A key element in the development and competitiveness of businesses rest on the management and enhancement of 'human resource'. Although it is a subject very much in vogue, the organisation of human resources is too rarely grounded in the relevant historical and comparative contexts which shape their practice. Furthermore, there is a need to counter the over-simplistic 'one best way' views and management exhortation so common to this topic, and historical comparisons offer insight into the nature, scale and long-term impact of trends, whilst uncovering the complex interaction of differing circumstance and 'optimum practice'.This important new two volume set presents key reading in paternalism and industrial welfare; employee relations and the professionalisation of management; Taylorism and flexibility: technological change and the division of labour; industrial training and skills; and labour and politics are covered in a theoretically informed and critical fashion.

Corporate Performance and Managerial Ties in China - Key Theories, Dimensions and Directions (Hardcover): Chris Rowley, Ingyu Oh Corporate Performance and Managerial Ties in China - Key Theories, Dimensions and Directions (Hardcover)
Chris Rowley, Ingyu Oh
R4,472 Discovery Miles 44 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In many countries, business practitioners, policy makers, pundits and laypeople want to know how strong China really is in business. In the preceding century, the overall tone of business comments on China was filled with fanfare and ovation. However, despite economic performance and seemingly inexorable growth, some global data in areas such as labour productivity and digital competitiveness, show a different and more nuanced picture. This collection provides a multi-level reality check on the Chinese economy, firm performance and managerial ties. Given that China must transform its economy and business that can pull global talent together to produce high-end technologies for radically innovative products and services, this book proposes two questions. First, can China restructure its economy from a low-cost growth model to a high value-added innovative model without incurring major structural inertia? Second, can Chinese firms outperform competitors in global high value markets without relying on state initiatives, central funding mechanisms and public R&D institutions? This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal, Asia Pacific Business Review.

Women-Owned SMEs in Emerging Markets - The Missing Link in Global Supply Chains (Hardcover): Shabnam Shalizi Women-Owned SMEs in Emerging Markets - The Missing Link in Global Supply Chains (Hardcover)
Shabnam Shalizi
R4,477 Discovery Miles 44 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book investigates women as business owners in emerging markets, documenting the structural difficulties they face as a result of their seeking access to global supply chains, and demonstrating the ways in which they are rewriting norms and challenging market assumptions. Although women own an estimated one-third of all small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets, they are deeply underrepresented in global supply chains. In what the author refers to as the Women in Trade Deficit, women-owned enterprises earn less than 1% of all money spent on vendors by large corporations and governments worldwide. Drawing on an in-depth empirical investigation of a range of SMEs in Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka, this book investigates how women enter the supply chains of major global firms and multinational corporations and the challenges they face in doing so. Overall, the book argues that these business owners are rewriting norms and rearranging markets through networked enterprises to advance what the author calls prosocial industrialism. Whilst many studies focus on women at the micro-enterprise or laborer level, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of their role at the helm of SMEs that trade internationally. As such, it will be of interest to researchers across business studies, economics, sociology, and development studies, and to donor agencies, policymakers, and the global private sector.
