Ant Architecture - The Wonder, Beauty, and Science of Underground Nests (Hardcover): Walter R Tschinkel Ant Architecture - The Wonder, Beauty, and Science of Underground Nests (Hardcover)
Walter R Tschinkel
R751 R681 Discovery Miles 6 810 Save R70 (9%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An unprecedented look at the complex and beautiful world of underground ant architecture Walter Tschinkel has spent much of his career investigating the hidden subterranean realm of ant nests. This wonderfully illustrated book takes you inside an unseen world where thousands of ants build intricate homes in the soil beneath our feet. Tschinkel describes the ingenious methods he has devised to study ant nests, showing how he fills a nest with plaster, molten metal, or wax and painstakingly excavates the cast. He guides you through living ant nests chamber by chamber, revealing how nests are created and how colonies function. How does nest architecture vary across species? Do ants have "architectural plans"? How do nests affect our environment? As he delves into these and other questions, Tschinkel provides a one-of-a-kind natural history of the planet's most successful creatures and a compelling firsthand account of a life of scientific discovery. Offering a unique look at how simple methods can lead to pioneering science, Ant Architecture addresses the unsolved mysteries of underground ant nests while charting new directions for tomorrow's research, and reflects on the role of beauty in nature and the joys of shoestring science.

Advances in Pest Management in Commercial Flowers (Hardcover): Suprakash Pal, Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy Advances in Pest Management in Commercial Flowers (Hardcover)
Suprakash Pal, Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Floricultural crops all over the world are challenged by a number of insect and mite pests. The pest scenario is changing, and with climate change the instances of new pest incidences have become a more common problem. Like other crops, the intensive cultivation of commercial flowers has accentuated pest problems, as farmers tend to use more agricultural chemicals, which, in turn, increase the problems of pesticide resistance, pest resurgence, and residues leading to health hazards. This volume, Advances in Pest Management in Commercial Flowers, looks at the major challenges and improvements in this growing area today. It first provides an informative overview of worldwide pests of important commercial flowers. It explores a number of important issues in this area, such as the role of climate change on insect pests of commercial flowers and the synthetic chemicals and their possible harmful effects on the environment.

Climate Change and Animal Health (Paperback): Craig Stephen, Colleen Duncan Climate Change and Animal Health (Paperback)
Craig Stephen, Colleen Duncan
R1,593 Discovery Miles 15 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

DIRECTLY APPLIES TO LIFE ON LAND SDG and CLIMATE CHANGE SDG. International organizations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization and World Organization for Animal Health have all reminded us that health impacts of climate change will become some of societies' greatest challenges. How we respond or adapt to climate change will have profound implications for people, animals, biodiversity, economies and ecosystems today as well as in the future. The book provides, in one easy reference, all of the information Animal Health practitioners need from defining the climate change concept, providing science-based evidence of climate change degradation of animal (ecosystem) health and successful mitigation and reversal strategies. Despite being arguably the most important challenges of the 21st century, engagement, and leadership from the animal health sector on climate change remains hard to find. This book attempts to support animal health professionals by providing information, knowledge, and experiences they can use to remedy this situation. There is no other book that covers anything like the proposed subject matter to this level of completeness and detail. The publishing of a text of this nature could help erode the power of the climate denialism lobby, shifting the debate and allowing mitigation efforts to gain higher priority. The tone of the book has an understated sense of urgency, leaning slightly toward presenting as a 'Manual for the apocalypse'. This has potential to be a benchmark publication. The text not only defines climate change but takes a proactive approach with intervention and corrective action examples: each chapter ends with suggestions on teachable and actionable ideas that could be used to mobilize concepts and information provided into education or advocacy. In this way, the book not only brings key ideas, principles and information to understand the implications for climate change for animal health, but will help translate the book's offerings into education and intervention. Teachers and researchers could use this one-of-a-kind book to frame a course or seminar series heightening student career engagement and stewardship of a more sustainable and healthier planet.

Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea - A Story of Scientific Method (Hardcover): Frederick R. Schram, Stefan Koenemann Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea - A Story of Scientific Method (Hardcover)
Frederick R. Schram, Stefan Koenemann
R4,150 Discovery Miles 41 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The scientific understanding of arthropod phylogeny and evolution has changed significantly in recent decades. One of the most momentous alterations involved crustaceans, which are not a monophyletc group, but are part of a larger group along with insects: Pancrustacea. The old ideas surrounding crustacean evolution have served scientists well for many years; it is now time to turn toward new research by embracing the results derived from investigations conducted largely within this century. For example, new definitions have arisen from sources across several fields of study, and Frederick R. Schram and Stefan Koenemann have created a book that explores paleobiodiversity and the diversity of modern body plans. Developments within ontogenetic studies continue to generate remarkable insights into crustaceomorph evolution in regard to patterns of embryology and a revolution in the application of development genetics. Phylogeny techniques of analysis and new sources of data derived from molecular sequencing and genetic studies have forced scientists to consider new hypotheses concerning the interrelationships of all the pancrustaceans, both the crustaceomorphs and Hexapoda. Yet, some fossil groups still remain enigmatic (Thylacocephala). Despite this, research into fossils (even if incompletely understood) fills in gaps of our knowledge of paleobiodiversity, and it's useful for many things, including analyzing the origin and early evolution of Hexapoda. Evolution and Phylogeny of Pancrustacea demonstrates the use of multiple alternative hypotheses and other techniques through the well-executed presentation of diverse data sources involving Pancrustacea. Readers are left with clues to great mysteries, including the possible pathways of evolution within marine arthropods.

Boundaries of Utopia - Imagining Communism from Plato to Stalin (Hardcover): Erik Van Ree Boundaries of Utopia - Imagining Communism from Plato to Stalin (Hardcover)
Erik Van Ree
R4,782 Discovery Miles 47 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea that socialism could be established in a single country was adopted as an official doctrine by the Soviet Union in 1925, Stalin and Bukharin being the main formulators of the policy. Before this there had been much debate as to whether the only way to secure socialism would be as a result of socialist revolution on a much broader scale, across all Europe or wider still. This book traces the development of ideas about communist utopia from Plato onwards, paying particular attention to debates about universalist ideology versus the possibility for "socialism in one country". The book argues that although the prevailing view is that "socialism in one country" was a sharp break from a long tradition that tended to view socialism as only possible if universal, in fact the territorially confined socialist project had long roots, including in the writings of Marx and Engels.

James L. Nation, Sr.
R2,800 Discovery Miles 28 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The book concentrates on physiology and biochemistry and is not diluted by taxonomy/systematics - this makes it different from the competitor books and increases its worth at the postgraduate level and beyond. It makes a very good companion book to a second text that concentrates on taxonomic aspects, such as McGavin. It emphasizes the importance of a rigorous understanding of species-specific details. This is even more successful because of the depth of each chapter. The chapter on symbiosis is different, and very interesting and relevant. There is 'hidden depth', nuance and richness in many chapters, which explore a huge range of themes and relevant topics. The book puts emphasis on insect diversity and its implications for experimental design and interpretation, highlighting caveats in experimental design. It is extremely thought provoking. The writing style is easy to follow with very good descriptions of complicated topics. The edition is published in full color throughout. Ideal for upper level undergraduate and graduate students (in college course system, 300 level and above). For the first-time learners, the level of difficulty is comparable to the introductory level courses for Genetics.

Silkworm Biofactory - Silk to Biology (Hardcover): Enoch Y. Park, Katsumi Maenaka Silkworm Biofactory - Silk to Biology (Hardcover)
Enoch Y. Park, Katsumi Maenaka
R5,771 Discovery Miles 57 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While silk derived from silkworm has been of economic importance for centuries, more recently silkworm has been found to have utility in biomedicine. This has attracted attention for expressing eukaryotic recombinant proteins, which require post-translational modifications. In 1985 Dr. Susumu Maeda demonstrated that silkworm larvae could produce a functional human-interferon. Since then various techniques have been developed to express recombinant proteins in silkworm. With the development of the Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) bacmid system, which is capable of replicating in both Escherichia coli and Bombyx mori derived cell lines or silkworm, silkworm larvae or pupae have been used for the expression system for recombinant protein production. This method has the advantage of a bacmid, in that it can be easily prepared for sufficient bacmid DNA for subsequent expression in silkworm. It is potentially a big breakthrough in production of recombinant eukaryotic proteins and viruses, which will be a powerful tool in a new proteome era. This volume contributes to the advancement of our knowledge in the subject, for example gene expression systems and silkworm research, and focuses on silkworm biofactories for the recombinant protein production and commercial applications of proteins.

Insect Vectors and Plant Pathogens (Hardcover): Nachhattar Singh Butter Insect Vectors and Plant Pathogens (Hardcover)
Nachhattar Singh Butter
R6,782 Discovery Miles 67 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The history of pathogens and vectors, unique symptoms of diseases and economic importance of important viral diseases have been dealt with in the introductory chapter of this book. While highlighting the role of arthropods, nematodes, and fungi; other agents of the spread of plant pathogens have also been included. Important aspects of insect vectors with direct bearing on transmission, i.e. vector identification, biology, feeding apparatus, and mechanism of spread including control of pathogens through vectors are covered comprehensively. As aphids and other hemipterous insects are major insect vectors, the book stresses on this order. There is a focus on the transmission of determinants under different categories of the transmission mechanism. The transmission determinant paradigm comprising coat protein and helper component has been expounded with recent cases. A brief description of new diseases at least one from each genus of plant viruses has been included in this compendium to elucidate the interaction of vector and virus. Phytoplasmal etiology of pathogens has been detailed separately on account of their importance. The transmission of plant viruses through insects with biting and chewing type of mouth parts has been discussed in detail as separate chapter. The latest research in the field of mites, nematodes, and fungi as vectors of plant viruses has been included. How the phytotoxemia is different from other crop disorders, has been critically explained with support from suitable and common examples of crop disorders. The book also highlights the effects of plant viruses on their vectors. An account of classification of plant viruses has also been given for better understanding of subject matter. Likewise, the information on the electron microscope along with its use has been included so as to define the procedure of examining sub-microscopic entities. The latest developments in the management of plant pathogens through vector management have been discussed with special reference to the use of biotechnology, crop protection, and plant resistance. The book will be of value to the teachers and to researchers. It will also be useful for extension workers in managing crop disorders. Students and researchers of entomology, plant pathology, plant protection and virology disciplines will obtain the latest in the field, through this book.

Global Hive - What The Bee Crisis Teaches Us About Building a Sustainable World (Paperback): Horst Kornberger Global Hive - What The Bee Crisis Teaches Us About Building a Sustainable World (Paperback)
Horst Kornberger
R424 R399 Discovery Miles 3 990 Save R25 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In a world all too familiar with environmental disasters, Horst Kornberger argues that the bee crisis is a more significant problem than deforestation, pollution and global warming put together, as it points to the causes behind all these. Global Hive is a rallying cry for a new understanding of world ecology. More than a study of bees, this book offers both an entirely new way of thinking about the bee crisis and its causes, and a way to use the crisis to explore wider social and ecological issues. Kornberger challenges the dominant scientific worldview that reduces everything to minute detail and fails to see the larger holistic picture. He argues that we urgently need to start thinking about ecology in a different way -- by developing a new science which draws on empathy and imagination -- if we want to mend our relationship with the natural world. From this perspective, the worldwide threat of the bee crisis becomes a starting point for global change. Global Hive is a thought-provoking treatise on what colony collapse teaches us about our society, our choices and how we can build a more sustainable world.

Ecological Strategies of Aquatic Insects (Hardcover): Charles W. Heckman Ecological Strategies of Aquatic Insects (Hardcover)
Charles W. Heckman
R5,496 Discovery Miles 54 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book recounts the habits of many interesting and unusual exceptions to the rule that insects are typically terrestrial forms of life. It examines the different ways that groups of species have developed modes of existence in or on the surface of water, and gives reasons why the gross morphology of insects is not favorable for life in or near bodies of water, such as wings that fail to function after coming into contact with water, rendering them useless.

Francesco Tomaiuolo, Carlo Caltagirone, Michael Petrides
R1,430 Discovery Miles 14 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Reproduction and Development in Mollusca (Hardcover): T. J Pandian Reproduction and Development in Mollusca (Hardcover)
T. J Pandian
R5,776 Discovery Miles 57 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is perhaps the first attempt to comprehensively project the uniqueness of molluscs, covering almost all aspects of reproduction and development from aplacophorans to vampyromorphic cephalopods. Molluscs are unique for the presence of protective external shell, defensive inking, geographic distribution from the depth of 9,050 m to an altitude of 4,300 m, gamete diversity, the use of nurse eggs and embryos to accelerate the first few mitotic divisions in embryos, the natural occurrence of androgenics in a couple of bivalves, viable induced tetraploids, gigantism induced by elevated ploidy, the complementary role played by mitochondrial genome in sex determination by nuclear genes and the uptake and accumulation of steroid hormone from surrounding waters. In molluscs, sexuality comprises of gonochorism (< 75 %) and hermaphroditism, which itself includes simultaneous (> 24%), protandry (< 1 %), Marian and serial. In them, the presence of shell affords iteroparity and relatively longer life span in prosobranchs and bivalves but its absence semelparity and short life span in opisthobranchs and cephalopods. Within semelparity, gonochorism facilitates faster growth and larger body size but hermaphroditism small body size. In them, sex is irrevocably determined at fertilization by a few unknown genes and is not amenable to any environmental influence. However, the sex determining mechanism is more a family trait in bivalves. Primary sex differentiation is also fixed and not amenable to environmental factor but secondary differentiation is labile, protracted and amenable to environmental factors. Both sex differentiation and reproductive cycle are accomplished and controlled solely by neurohormones. In these processes, the role of steroid hormones may be alien to molluscs.
