The Informal Economy Revisited - Examining the Past, Envisioning the Future (Hardcover): Martha Chen, Francoise Carre The Informal Economy Revisited - Examining the Past, Envisioning the Future (Hardcover)
Martha Chen, Francoise Carre
R4,663 Discovery Miles 46 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This landmark volume brings together leading scholars in the field to investigate recent conceptual shifts, research findings and policy debates on the informal economy as well as future challenges and directions for research and policy. Well over half of the global workforce and the vast majority of the workforce in developing countries work in the informal economy, and in countries around the world new forms of informal employment are emerging. Yet the informal workforce is not well understood, remains undervalued and is widely stigmatised. Contributors to the volume bridge a range of disciplinary perspectives including anthropology, development economics, law, political science, social policy, sociology, statistics, urban planning and design. The Informal Economy Revisited also focuses on specific groups of informal workers, including home-based workers, street vendors and waste pickers, to provide a grounded insight into disciplinary debates. Ultimately, the book calls for a paradigm shift in how the informal economy is perceived to reflect the realities of informal work in the Global South, as well as the informal practices of the state and capital, not just labour. The Informal Economy Revisited is the culmination of 20 years of pioneering work by WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing), a global network of researchers, development practitioners and organisations of informal workers in 90 countries. Researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and advocates will all find this book an invaluable guide to the significance and complexities of the informal economy, and its role in today's globalised economy. Exposing Federal Sponsorship of Job Loss - The Whitehall Plant Closing Campaign and "Runaway Plant" Reform (Paperback): Julia... Exposing Federal Sponsorship of Job Loss - The Whitehall Plant Closing Campaign and "Runaway Plant" Reform (Paperback)
Julia C. Abedian
R859 Discovery Miles 8 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1995, this book explores a number of subjects of significance for labor and economic policy, especially the role of U. S. tax policy in the relocation of jobs from the contintental USA to Puerto Rico. The book demonstrates the problems for the USA because of inadequate adjustment policies to protect the interests of communities and workers when plants close and production is relocated. It disproves the myth that markets will take fcare of workers and communities, showing that basic economics is concerned with market forces and not with equity, environmental and worker protections. The Whitehall plant closing case is documented and the economic and political context analyzed which caused that case to be instructive for broader economic and labor policy purposes. In a new age of American Protectionism, this book has enduring relevance.

The Crisis of Global Youth Unemployment (Paperback): Tamar Mayer, Sujata Moorti, Jamie K. McCallum The Crisis of Global Youth Unemployment (Paperback)
Tamar Mayer, Sujata Moorti, Jamie K. McCallum
R1,549 Discovery Miles 15 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the proportion of unemployed young people has exceeded any other group of unemployed adults. This phenomenon marks the emergence of a laborscape. This concept recognizes that, although youth unemployment is not consistent across the world, it is a coherent problem in the global political economy. This book examines this crisis of youth unemployment, drawing on international case studies. It is organized around four key dimensions of the crisis: precarity, flexibility, migration, and policy responses. With contributions from leading experts in the field, the chapters offer a dynamic portrait of unemployment and how this is being challenged through new modes of resistance. This book provides cross-national comparisons, both ethnographic and quantitative, to explore the contours of this laborscape on the global, national, and local scales. Throughout these varied case studies is a common narrative from young workers, families, students, volunteers, and activists facing a new and growing problem. This book will be an imperative resource for students and researchers looking at the sociology of globalization, global political economy, labor markets, and economic geography.

Social Exclusion and the Remaking of Social Networks (Paperback): Robert Strathdee Social Exclusion and the Remaking of Social Networks (Paperback)
Robert Strathdee
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do young people make effective transitions into work? This question has occupied the minds of parents and young people, and also researchers and policy makers, as they face up to challenges presented by globalization and technological change. The foremost governmental response to this challenge has been to expand training systems to improve young people's qualifications. However, it is clear that for many this response has failed to deliver the promised rewards and the legitimation of this strategy has been exhausted. This book explores developments in training and in social welfare to show that third way administrations in England and New Zealand are reconnecting young people to the labour market through creating social networks. Social Exclusion and the Remaking of Social Networks describes how networks are being remade by the state in commodified forms.

Poverty and Social Exclusion in the New Russia (Paperback): Nick Manning Poverty and Social Exclusion in the New Russia (Paperback)
Nick Manning; Nataliya Tikhonova
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presenting the findings of a major research project funded by the EU (INTAS), this key volume investigates the regional, ethnic and socio-cultural aspects of poverty and social exclusion in Russia in recent years. In-depth household interviews and survey data allowed teams from the UK, Denmark and Russia to compare different societies and communities in Russia across several different themes: the definition of poverty in different regional, ethnic and socio-cultural settings; the reproduction and formation of poverty subcultures in different societies and communities; the ethnic/national and political values of poor people; the readiness of poor people for social protest; and a comparison of Russia with other EU countries. Offering a wealth of original data collected following a period of rapid impoverishment of the Russian population, the study considers the challenge this presents to Western European models of poverty and social exclusion.

Multilateral Wellbeing Comparison in a Many Dimensioned World - Ordering and Ranking Collections of Groups (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Multilateral Wellbeing Comparison in a Many Dimensioned World - Ordering and Ranking Collections of Groups (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Gordon Anderson
R2,570 Discovery Miles 25 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses the disparities that arise when measuring and modeling societal behavior and progress across the social sciences. It looks at why and how different disciplines and even researchers can use the same data and yet come to different conclusions about equality of opportunity, economic and social mobility, poverty and polarization, and conflict and segregation. Because societal behavior and progress exist only in the context of other key aspects, modeling becomes exponentially more complex as more of these aspects are factored into considerations. The content of this book transcends disciplinary boundaries, providing valuable information on measuring and modeling to economists, sociologists, and political scientists who are interested in data-based analysis of pressing social issues.

Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Value Chains - Comparative Analyses, Macroeconomic Effects, the Role of Institutions... Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Value Chains - Comparative Analyses, Macroeconomic Effects, the Role of Institutions and Strategies for the Global South (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Christina Teipen, Petra Dunhaupt, Hansjoerg Herr, Fabian Mehl
R5,386 Discovery Miles 53 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates how global value chain governance, public institutions and strategies in the area of industrial policy and industrial relations by stakeholders such as national or global trade unions, governments, companies or international NGOs shape upgrading in the Global South. A special feature is its interdisciplinarity, combining sociological, economic, legal and political dimensions. Case studies systematically compare different industry trajectories. Furthermore, it encompasses far-reaching insights into the role of global value chains for development, economic catching-up of countries and socio-political aspects such as working conditions and interest representation.

This book explores the new challenges for work and employment relations in the wake of globalization. It describes contemporary developments and ways in which labor relations systems are evolving around the world and in Turkey. Authors combine the latest information with in-depth insights on a variety of issues. The implications of international trade for employment, the dichotomy between competitiveness and meeting international labor standards, the multinationals effects on labor relations, social policy implications of American higher education, the search for the right regulatory balance between labor flexibility and job security, challenges faced in establishing temporary work agencies, the role of skills training and providing women with micro credits to overcome informal employment problems are just some of the issues analyzed in this book. Thus, the contributions from Turkish and international institutions offer a valuable overview of the ongoing discussions in the field of labor economics and employment relations."

Employment Relations in Financial Services - An Exploration of the Employee Experience After the Financial Crash (Hardcover,... Employment Relations in Financial Services - An Exploration of the Employee Experience After the Financial Crash (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Gregor Gall
R4,675 Discovery Miles 46 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes and analyses the impact of the 2007-2008 financial crisis upon the working conditions of employees in the financial services sector in Britain. It tells the story of workers being made to pay the price for a crisis that was not of their own making, but nevertheless caused a deleterious impact on their employment security, remuneration and working conditions. Evidence of fighting back against this has been sparse so that the response of employees is best characterised as 'fright' (grudgingly working harder and longer), 'flight' (leaving the sector through redundancy), and 'falling in line' (accepting the diktat of performance managements systems). Through this book we learn the reasons behind this acquiescence, with its detailed attention to topics such as the stunted development of labour unionism, the prevalence of union-management partnerships, and the occurrence of employment insecurity and labour shedding. Providing a valuable insight into the effects of the financial crash, Employment Relations in Financial Services will be useful to academics, students and also trade unionists.

Qualitative Indicators of Labour Standards - Comparative Methods and Applications (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): David Kucera Qualitative Indicators of Labour Standards - Comparative Methods and Applications (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
David Kucera
R3,074 Discovery Miles 30 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent years have witnessed a rapidly growing interest in the use and construction of "qualitative" indicators of labour standards. This is likely attributable to several factors: the rise of "socially responsible" investment, ongoing debates on the effects of labour standards on international competitiveness, and the sense that traditional quantitative indicators of labour standards are too narrow in scope to adequately capture the wide-ranging and inherently qualitative nature of many aspects of labour standards. Qualitative indicators, while generally having numerical values, are based on such methods as grading by experts, the coding of legislation, and the coding of other textual sources addressing violations of a more de facto nature. Measuring compliance with labour standards is an undertaking intrinsically fraught with difficulty. For there are a number of possible sources of measurement error, both random and non-random, that are unique to such indicators, on top of those that affect qualitative and quantitative indicators alike. The growing use of qualitative indicators of labour standards thus raises a number of questions about comparative methods of construction as well as the appropriateness of particular methods for particular applications. This volume results from a seminar that was organized to address these and related questions.

Diversity and Decomposition in the Labour Market (Paperback): David Robbins, Lesley Caldwell, Graham Day, Karen Jones, Hilary... Diversity and Decomposition in the Labour Market (Paperback)
David Robbins, Lesley Caldwell, Graham Day, Karen Jones, Hilary Rose
R799 Discovery Miles 7 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1982 Diversity and Decomposition in the Labour Market, is an edited collection addressing the contemporary sociology of the labour market. The collection focuses on the categorisation of the diverse dualities that might be thought to characterise certain labour markets. The collection addresses many economic sectors, and there is a distinct focus on labour market analyses developed within neo-classical and radical economics in the USA. The analyses maintain that the labour market is in some sense dualistic.

International Labour Migration - Foreign Workers and Public Policy (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): D Bartram International Labour Migration - Foreign Workers and Public Policy (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
D Bartram
R3,059 Discovery Miles 30 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Studies of international labour migration typically assume that foreign labour is a universal feature of wealthy economies. Exploitation of foreign workers can contribute significantly to employers' profits. However, some wealthy societies do not import workers on a large scale, despite employers' pressures. Using Israel and Japan as empirical cases, this comparative-historical work investigates why some governments allow employers relatively free access to foreign labour, while others require alternative responses to labour shortages. A focus on variation leads to an innovative and insightful argument to explain international labour migration.

* women and trade unions
* equality and difference
* education and training.
Students of women's studies, gender studies and history will find this a fascinating and invaluable addition to their reading material.

Asa Lundqvist
R2,319 Discovery Miles 23 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Family Policy Paradoxes examines the political regulation of the family in Sweden, between 1930 and today. The book draws attention to the political attempts to create a 'modern family,' and the aspiration to regulate the family and install gender equality. It looks at historic and current developments in gender equality and family policy, and it sheds light on the ongoing policy processes within Europe and how these can be understood in the light of a particular political experience. Based on original research, Family Policy Paradoxes builds on rich and varied sources, including interviews with key actors and policy documents. It will contribute to the literature of gender, family, and welfare policies.
