Machinery Vibration Analysis and Predictive Maintenance provides a
detailed examination of the detection, location and diagnosis of
faults in rotating and reciprocating machinery using vibration
analysis. The basics and underlying physics of vibration signals
are first examined. The acquisition and processing of signals is
then reviewed followed by a discussion of machinery fault diagnosis
using vibration analysis. Hereafter the important issue of
rectifying faults that have been identified using vibration
analysis is covered. The book also covers the other techniques of
predictive maintenance such as oil and particle analysis,
ultrasound and infrared thermography. The latest approaches and
equipment used together with the latest techniques in vibration
analysis emerging from current research are also highlighted.
This volume is the third in the series of sourcebooks on Failure
Analysis and Structural Integrity published by Elsevier. It
comprises 35 case studies describing detailed analyses of real
engineering failures and structural integrity problems chosen from
volumes 7, 8 and 9 of the Elsevier journal Engineering Failure
Analysis.
Written for novices, this volume explains how centrifugal pumps and their attendant pipework function, before moving on to the more difficult task of solving problems and troubleshooting such systems.
The use of lasers which emit infra-red radiation and sophisticated
detectors of IR radiation is increasing dramatically: they are
being used for long-distance fibre-optic communications and remote
environmental monitoring and sensing. Thus they are of interest to
the telecommunications industry and the military in particular.
This book has been designed to bring together what is known on
these devices, using an international group of contributors.
The idea for this book came out of the EURESCO Conference on High
Performance Fibers: Euroconference on Fiber Fracture in 2000. Many
of the books that are currently available look at different aspects
of fiber processing, properties, or applications, but none are
focussed on the fracture behaviour of fibers. This book presents
the mechancisms and models of fiber fracture currently available
for both natural and synthetic fibers, and it is expected that
increasingly there will be cross fertilization between the fields,
opening new frontiers in academic research and more competitive
products for industry. It covers the following areas of fiber
fracture: ceramic fibers; glass fibers; carbon filters; metallic
fibers and thin wires; polymeric fibers; and carbon nanotubes.
The objective of the 28th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology was to define current understanding of the science relating to boundary and mixed lubrication and to compare this with the needs of industry in terms of applications.
This fully illustrated text explains the basic measurement
techniques, describes the commercially available instruments and
provides an overview of the current perception of 3-D topography
analysis in the academic world and industry, and the commonly used
3-D parameters and plots for the characterizing and visualizing 3-D
surface topography.

Pressure vessels are closed containers designed to hold gases or
liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient
pressure. They have a variety of applications in industry,
including in oil refineries, nuclear reactors, vehicle airbrake
reservoirs, and more. The pressure differential with such vessels
is dangerous, and due to the risk of accident and fatality around
their use, the design, manufacture, operation and inspection of
pressure vessels is regulated by engineering authorities and guided
by legal codes and standards. "Pressure Vessel Design Manual" is a
solutions-focused guide to the many problems and technical
challenges involved in the design of pressure vessels to match
stringent standards and codes. It brings together otherwise
scattered information and explanations into one easy-to-use
resource to minimize research and take readers from problem to
solution in the most direct manner possible.
Design greener, safer, and more cost-efficient vehicles using semi-active suspension systems Semi-active suspension systems promise weight efficiencies, cost savings, and higher safety and comfort compared to other types of electronically-controlled suspensions currently in use. With the growing emphasis on fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions, and cost reductions for all vehicles, these semi-active systems are set to become a growing part of overall vehicle design, but coverage of them in standard automotive engineering texts is currently limited. Semi-Active Suspension Control Design for Vehicles provides a comprehensive overview of semi-active suspension systems with an emphasis on performance analysis and control design. Several different approaches using different control theories are presented and evaluated in the book, with methodology provided to analyze and evaluate suspension performances while identifying optimal performance bounds. Further features and coverage include: Explanations of two innovative semi-active suspension strategies to enhance either comfort or road-holding performance, with complete analyses of both A case study showing complete implementation of all the presented strategies Summary descriptions of classical control algorithms for controlled dampers Intended as an application-oriented reference for automotive
engineers, a tutorial resource for students in automotive systems
and a control design-oriented text for researchers, Semi-Active
Suspension Control Design for Vehicles presents an authoritative
account of this critical vehicle dynamics topic based on the
extensive academic and industrial research of this expert author
team.
Geometrical tolerancing is the standard technique that designers
and engineers use to specify and control the form, location and
orientation of the features of components and manufactured parts.
This innovative book has been created to simplify and codify the
use and understanding of geometrical tolerancing. It is a complete,
self contained reference for daily use. An indispensable guide for
anyone who creates or needs to understand technical drawings.
The processes of manufacture and assembly are based on the
communication of engineering information via drawing. These
drawings follow rules laid down in national and international
standards. The organisation responsible for the international rules
is the International Standards Organisation (ISO). There are
hundreds of ISO standards on engineering drawing because drawing is
very complicated and accurate transfer of information must be
guaranteed. The information contained in an engineering drawing is
a legal specification, which contractor and sub-contractor agree to
in a binding contract. The ISO standards are designed to be
independent of any one language and thus much symbology is used to
overcome any reliance on any language. Companies can only operate
efficiently if they can guarantee the correct transmission of
engineering design information for manufacturing and assembly.
Generally, welding produces welding deformation and residual
stress in the products, which influences the quality and
performance of the products. Although many engineers and
researchers have made great effort how to control these incidents,
they have still remained unresolved. "Welding Deformation and
Residual Stress Prevention" provides a unique computational
approach to the prediction of the effects of deformation and
residual stress on materials. The goal is to provide engineers and
designers with the ability to create their own computational system
for predicting and possibly avoiding the problem altogether. Online simulation software to perform basic analysis on welding mechanics Examples of strategic methods and procedures are illustrated to have solved various welding-related problems encountered in the process of construction. Appendices present data bases for welding residual stresses, temperature dependent material properties, etc. "
Kinematic Chains and Machine Components Design covers a broad
spectrum of critical machine design topics and helps the reader
understand the fundamentals and apply the technologies necessary

examples and instructive problems present the reader with a
teachable computer-oriented text. Useful analytical techniques
provide the practitioner and student with powerful tools for the
design of kinematic chains and machine components.

Primarily this book describes the thermodynamics of gas turbine
cycles. The search for high gas turbine efficiency has produced
many variations on the simple "open circuit" plant, involving the
use of heat exchangers, reheating and intercooling, water and steam
injection, cogeneration and combined cycle plants. These are
described fully in the text. A review of recent proposals for a number of novel gas turbine
cycles is also included. In the past few years work has been
directed towards developing gas turbines which produce less carbon
dioxide, or plants from which the CO2 can be disposed of; the
implications of a carbon tax on electricity pricing are
considered. In presenting this wide survey of gas turbine cycles for power generation the author calls on both his academic experience (at Cambridge and Liverpool Universities, the Gas Turbine Laboratory at MIT and Penn State University) and his industrial work (primarily with Rolls Royce, plc.) The book will be essential reading for final year and masters students in mechanical engineering, and for practising engineers.
