The materials mechanics of the controlled separation of a body into
two or more parts - cutting -- using a blade or tool or other
mechanical implement is a ubiquitous process in most engineering
disciplines, be it mechanical, civil, medical, food or process
based, and a surprising number of engineers are involved in cutting
and the design of cutting tools. There are a wide range of books
available on the cutting of metals, but no other text is devoted to
the cutting of materials generally, the mechanics of which
(toughness, fracture, deformation, plasticity, tearing, grating,
chewing, etc) have wide ranging implications for engineers, medics,
manufacturers, and process engineers, making this text of
particular interest to a wide range of engineers and specialists.
* The only book to explain and unify the process and techniques of
cutting in metals AND non-metals. The emphasis on biomaterials,
plastics and non-metals will be of considerable interest to many,
while the transfer of knowledge from non-metals fields offers
important benefits to metalcutters.
* Comprehensive, written with this well-known author's lightness of
touch, the book will attract the attention of many readers in this
under-served subject
* The clarity of the text is further enhanced by detailed examples
and case studies, from the grating of cheese on an industrial scale
to the design of scalpels, supporting online materials data and FEM
modelling material.

including researchers, students, and petroleum and mining
professionals. The presentation is non-technical and illustrated
with numerous colour charts, maps and photographs. The book also
includes a detachable wall chart of the complete time scale for use
as a handy reference in the office, laboratory or field.
The most detailed international geologic time scale available
that contextualizes information in one single reference for quick
desktop access. Gives insights in the construction, strengths, and
limitations of the geological time scale that greatly enhances its
function and its utility. Aids understanding by combining with the
mathematical and statistical methods to scaled composites of global
succession of events. Meets the needs of a range of users at
various points in the workflow (researchers extracting linear time
from rock records, students recognizing the geologic stage by their
content).

The detection and measurement of the dynamic interactions of
proteins within the living cell are critical to our understanding
of cell physiology and pathophysiology. With FRET microscopy and
spectroscopy techniques, basic and clinical scientists can make
such measurements at very high spatial and temporal resolution. But
sources of background information about these tools are very
limited, so this book fills an important gap. It covers both the
basic concepts and theory behind the various FRET microscopy and
spectroscopy techniques, and the practical aspects of using the
techniques and analyzing the results. The critical tricks for
obtaining a good FRET image and precisely quantitating the signals
from living specimens at the nanomolecular level are explained.
Valuable information about the preparation of biological samples
used for FRET image analysis is also provided.
The methods covered include different types of microscopy systems
and detectors (wide-field, confocal, multi-photon) as well as
specialized techniques such as photobleaching FRET, FLIM-FRET
microscopy, spectral imaging FRET, single molecule FRET, and time
and image correlation spectroscopy. Starting from the basics, the
chapters guide readers through the choice of probes to be used for
FRET experiments and the selection of the most suitable
experimental approaches to address specific biological questions.
Up-to-date, consistently organized, and well-illustrated, this
unique book will be welcomed by all researchers who wish to use
FRET microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.

A large amount of natural or artificially produced physical
phenomena are exploited for practical applications, even though
several of them give rise to unpleasant consequences. These
ultimately manifest themselves under form of malfunction or
definitive failure of components and systems, or environmental
hazard. So far, manifold categories of inadvertent or deliberate
sources have been discovered to simultaneously produce useful
effects in some ways but adverse ones in others. In particular,
responsible for the growing interest in the last decades for
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) has been the progressive
miniaturisation and sensitivity of electronic components and
circuits, often operating in close proximity to relatively powerful
sources of electromagnetic interference. Potential authors of books
on the subject-matter are fully aware of the fact that planning
production of manageable handbooks capable to treat all the EMC
case studies of practical and long-lasting interest could result in
a questionable and difficult undertaking. Therefore, in addition to
textbooks providing a thorough background on basic aspects, thus
being well-tailored for students and those which want to get in
contact with this discipline, the most can be made to jointly
sustain a helpful and practicable publishing activity is to supply
specialised monographs or miscellanies of selected topics. Such
resources are preferentially addressed to post-graduate students,
researchers and designers, often employed in the forefront of
research or engaged for remodelling design paradigms. Hence, the
prerequisite for such a class of publications should consist in
arousing critical sense and promoting new ideas. This is the object
of the present book which tries to rather discuss special subjects,
or throw out suggestions for reformulating conventional approaches,
than to appear as a reference text. A common motivation encouraged
the contributors to bringing together a number of accounts of the
research that they have undertaken over the late years: willing to
fill the important need of covering EMC topics rather proper to
transmission and distribution of electric power than, more usually,
to Electronics and Telecommunication Systems.
- EMC topics for Power Systems, at last
- Investigating EMC features of distributed and/or complex
systems.
- A broad body of knowledge for specific applications.
- A stimulating support for those which are engaged in the
forefront of research and design.
- An example of how breaking ideas should be encouraged and proudly
applied.
- A fruitful critique to overcomplicated and unpractical
models.
- A comprehensive resource to estimate the important role of EMC at
lower frequencies.

'Financial Performance' presents the foundation concepts underlying
the Senior Executive Programmes the Authors have taught together
and separately over the last 15 years in Europe, Asia and North
America.
These programmes include
The Oxford Advanced Management Programme
The Oxford Senior Executive Finance Programme
The INSEAD Advanced Management Programme
The IMI, Geneva, Advanced Management Programme
The Harvard Advanced Management Programme
The Oxford International Executive Programme, Singapore
The IMI International Finance Programme, Singapore
The book is intended as a reference manual as well as a textbook
and will be of value to anyone with an interest in financial
performance - particularly senior executives.
The developments in modern finance over the last two decades have
considerable implications for the way senior executives think about
the finance discipline. It is no longer enough to have a
rudimentary knowledge of basic finance and a heavy reliance on
financial specialists.
CEOs of course need excellent financial professionals - however
they need to go beyond this and provide strategic leadership. This
requires a conceptual framework for dealing with financial matters.
This book provides a description of the underlying ideas and will
be of value to anyone with an interest in financial performance -
particularly senior executives.
This book revolves around the concept of value and it is
organised into two parts.
Part IPerformance Measurement
Consists of three chapters, all of which focus on the real and
fairly complex set of financial statements of DaimlerChrysler
AG.
The first two chapters provide a detailed guided tour of the
financial statements which deconstruct the complexity and then
reconstruct the financials to provide a clearer base for analysis.
These chapters have been arranged to deal with each line item of
financial statements which have been highlighted in such a way to
allow the reader to treat the materials as a reference as well as a
sequential read.
Chapter three presents a framework for evaluating financial health
and introduces a cash flow based model for understanding the short
and medium term constraints on a firm's growth. This exposition
revolves around the concept of sustainable growth.
Part 2Valuation
In the second part of the book chapter 4 introduces the cost of
capital concept followed by chapter 5 which provides a general
source of reference for valuation and a variety of difference
applications.Chapter 6 concludes the book with a review of concept
of shareholder value from a European perspective.
