Reliability of Software Intensive Systems
This volume represents an effort to bring together communities of land-based hydrogeology and marine hydrogeology. The issues of submarine groundwater discharge and its opposite phenomenon of seawater invasion are discussed in this book from the geophysical, geochemical, biological, and engineering perspectives. This is where land hydrogeology and marine hydrogeology overlap. Submarine groundwater discharge is a rapidly developing research field. The SCOR and LOICZ of the IGBP have recently established a working group for this research. IASPO and IAHS under IUGG also recently formed a new joint committee "Seawater/Groundwater Interactions" to collaborate with oceanographers and hydrologists.
Anti-Virus Tools & Techniques for Computer
This book provides industrial facilities with comprehensive guidance on the development of storm water pollution prevention plans and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs). It provides technical assistance and support to all facilities suibject to pollution prevention requirements established under National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for storm water point discharge discharges. In addition to providing guidance for facilities that are subject to storm water permit requirements, this book contains information that is generally useful for controlling storm water problems. Guidelines and accompanying worksheets will walk the reader through the process.
DNA Structure and Function, a timely and comprehensive resource, is
intended for any student or scientist interested in DNA structure
and its biological implications. The book provides a simple yet
comprehensive introduction to nearly all aspects of DNA structure.
It also explains current ideas on the biological significance of
classic and alternative DNA conformations. Suitable for graduate
courses on DNA structure and nucleic acids, the text is also
excellent supplemental reading for courses in general biochemistry,
molecular biology, and genetics.
This book will be of vital interest to all engineers and designers concerned with centrifugal pumps and turbines. Including statistical information derived from 20000 pumps and 700 turbines with capacities of 5gpm to 5000000gpm, this book offers the widest range and scope of information currently available. Statistical analyses suggest practical methods of increasing pump performance and provide valuable data for new design aspects.
The relevant techniques, vocabulary, currently available hardware architectures, and programming languages which provide the basic concepts of parallel computing are introduced in this book. In the future, we can expect to see massively parallel teraflop machines. These machines will be supported by gigabit network which allow grand-challenge problems to be solved by using several supercomputers and parallel machines concurrently.
Life cycle design is a proactive approach for integrating pollution
prevention and resource conservation strategies into the
development of more ecologically and economically sustainable
product systems. Cross media pollutant transfer and the shifting of
other impacts can be avoided by addressing the entire life cycle,
which includes raw materials acquisition, materials processing,
manufacturing and assembly, use and service, retirement, disposal
and the ultimate fate of residuals.
This encyclopedia contains more than 5000 integer sequences, over
half of which have never before been catalogued. Because the
sequences are presented in the most natural form, and arranged for
easy reference, this book is easier to use than the authors earlier
classic "A Handbook of Integer Sequences. The Encyclopedia gives
the name, mathematical description, and citations to literature for
each sequence. Following sequences of particular interest, thereare
essays on their origins, uses, and connections to related sequences
(all cross-referenced). A valuable new feature to this text is the
inclusion of a number of interesting diagrams and illustrations
related to selected sequences.
The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of
the primary subfields of
This series provides a variety of different discussions on topics within the field of growth factors and cytokines in health and disease.
The book summarizes present scientific knowledge in plant
physiology with regards to plant production. The authors, mainly
professors of plant physiology at agricultural universities in
Czechoslovakia, present the individual fields of plant physiology
with regard to the demands of agricultural practice and education
of students and doctorani at these universities.
Breast cancer research has never been in such an exciting and
hopeful phase as today. From a clinical perspective, the discovery
of genetic markers of risk in a proportion of familial breast
cancer cases has opened up new vistas for understanding and
ultimately preventing this disease. On the other hand, aggressive -
even daring - therapies are being proven to be effective against
advanced breast cancer. For the breast cancer experimentalist, this
is also a time of great advance. Although animal and cell culture
breast cancer models have proven to be of great use, there are now
increasing opportunities to test the concepts developed in these
models in actual clinical samples and cases. It is gratifying to
see how well these concepts "translate" into the clinical setting.
A very active area of research that is linking the laboratory to
the clinic is the dissection of the biology and elucidation of the
significance of proliferate breast disease and the identification
of true, "high risk" or "preneoplastic" legions within the
previously ill-defined spectrum of fibrocystic or benign breast
disease. One anticipates that discoveries made here will also lead
to earlier detection, intervention and prevention of
life-threatening cancer.
This is a practical textbook written for use by engineers,
scientists and technicians. It is not intended to be a rigorous
scientific treatment of the subject material, as this would fill
several volumes. Rather, it introduces the reader to the
fundamentals of the subject material, and provides sufficient
references for an in-depth study of the subject by the interested
technologist. The author has a lifetime teaching credential in the
California Community College System. Also, he has taught technical
courses with the American Vacuum Society for about 35 years.
Students attending many of these classes have backgrounds varying
from high-school graduates to Ph.D.s in technical disciplines. This
is an extremely difficult class profile to teach. This book still
endeavors to reach this same audience. Basic algebra is required to
master most of the material. But, the calculus is used in
derivation of some of the equations. The author risks use of the
first person "I," instead of "the author," and "you" instead of
"the reader." Both are thought to be in poor taste when writing for
publication in the scientific community. However, "I" am writing
this book for "you" because the subject is exciting, and I enjoy
teaching you, perhaps, something new. The book is written more in
the vein of a "one-on-one" discussion with you, rather than the
author lecturing to the reader. There are anecdotes, and examples
of some failures and successes I have had over the last forty-five
years in vacuum related activities, I'll try not to understate
either.
Since its inception in the famous 1936 paper by Birkhoff and von
Neumann entitled "The logic of quantum mechanics" quantum logic,
i.e. the logical investigation of quantum mechanics, has undergone
an enormous development. Various schools of thought and approaches
have emerged and there are a variety of technical results.
This book aims to help the reader to understand what motivates people to engage in risk taking behavior, such as participating in traffic, sports, financial investments, or courtship. The consequences of risk taking may be positive, or result in accidents and injuries, especially in traffic. The wealth of studies and theories (about 1000 references) is used to offer a cohesive, holistic view of risk motivation. The risk motivation theory is a dynamic state-trait model incorporating physiological, emotional and cognitive components of risk perception, processing and planning. If a deficit exists between desired and perceived risk, risk compensation behavior results. A feedback loop provides new information for the next perception-motivation-behavior process. Assumptions were tested and support was found with 120 subjects in a longitudinal study. The concepts and findings are discussed in relation to psychological theories and their meaning for our daily lives.
Recent decades have seen a very rapid success in developing
numerical methods based on explicit control over approximation
errors. It may be said that nowadays a new direction is forming in
numerical analysis, the main goal of which is to develop methods
ofreliable computations. In general, a reliable numerical method
must solve two basic problems: (a) generate a sequence of
approximations that converges to a solution and (b) verify the
accuracy of these approximations. A computer code for such a method
must consist of two respective blocks: solver and checker.
In 1974 the editors of the present volume published a well-received
book entitled Latin Squares and their Applications''. It included a
list of 73 unsolved problems of which about 20 have been completely
solved in the intervening period and about 10 more have been
partially solved.
This is the third volume in a series on membrane protein transfer. Membrane protein transport underlies the topological disposition of many proteins within cells and it is this disposition that allows for the co-ordination of the central cellular processes, such as metabolism.
Research of the past ten years has made it increasingly clear that
domestic animals and wild animals differ in their nutritional
requirements. Nutritional management, beneficial to domestic
animals, may actually be life-threatening to wild ones. This new
edition of Wildlife Feeding and Nutrition has been thoroughly
updated to reflect recent insights, especially with regard to
wildlife nutrition essential to successful management either in the
wild or in captivity.
Why a Second Edition?
New models for dislocation structure and motion are presented for
nanocrystals, nucleation at grain boundaries, shocked crystals,
interphase interfaces, quasicrystals, complex structures with
non-planar dislocation cores, and colloidal crystals. A review of
experimentally established main features of the magnetoplastic
effect with their physical interpretation explains many diverse
results of this type. The model has many potential applications for
forming processes influenced by magnetic fields.
The need for clean air has probably never been greater. Many industrial employees need to avoid exposure to airborne particulates, while certain industrial processes demand clean air of exceptional quality. Medical and biological fields rely on sterile air, while filtration can improve air quality in offices, homes and all types of transport. Filters act in a variety of complex and subtle ways. Each chapter introduces its subject matter simply, before tackling the problem in greater depth. The book therefore provides an excellent basis for detailed study, but is also invaluable to anyone needing an overview of the subject. Essential reading for industrial hygienists and engineers requiring an understanding of filtration, and for anyone whose work involves the maintenance or monitoring of air quality.
